Macromolecules contribute broad "background" resonances to the (1)H NMR brain spectra at short echo times. The application of long echo times is the most widely used method for removing these resonances. Here, it is demonstrated that these background resonances may be suppressed at short echo times using multiple inversion recovery (MIR). In the technique presented, the MIR sequence consists of four adiabatic inversion pulses, applied preparatory to a 20-ms echo time stimulated echo localization sequence. The inversion times (359, 157, 69, and 20 ms) were selected to preferentially suppress macromolecules with longitudinal relaxation times between 38 and 300 ms. While the resulting spectra have lower overall signal-to-noise, baseline contributions from macromolecules are greatly reduced. Unlike the typical long TE acquisitions, the short TE MIR acquisition preserves the myo-inositol resonance.  相似文献

A linear algebra based deprivation is presented to demonstrate that linearly time scaling an entire gradient waveform by a factor "R" exponentially increases its sensitivity to time derivatives of position by R(i + 1), where i refers to the i-th derivative of position (e.g., i = 1 is velocity). Thus, time scaling will preserve zero valued refocussing moments associated with artifact reduction techniques designed for motion occurring between excitation and detection. Typically, gradient waveforms for artifact reduction techniques are derived for use only at specific echo times. The time scaling described here allows for simple modification of refocussing gradient waveforms for use at variable echo times. Motion sensitivity associated with non-zero moment gradient waveforms can be easily predicted and modified using this technique, with consideration for field of view, resolution, and bandwidth. A clinical example is presented showing the predicted changes in sensitivity to nonrefocussed derivatives of position as the imaging gradients are time scaled. Further, trade-offs and alternatives in sensitivity to motion, slice thickness, image bandwidth, field of view and resolution will be discussed in conjunction with time scaling. This technique will have applicability in many situations involving MRI of moving tissue and a clinical example in cardiac imaging is presented.  相似文献

The performance of T(2)-weighted spin-echo version of echo planar imaging (SE_EPI), conventional spin echo (SE) and fat-suppressed turbo spin-echo (TSE_SPIR) sequences for the detection of focal liver lesions was evaluated. Twenty patients that were included in our study, had CT examinations prior to the MR study and were scheduled for surgery for removal of liver lesions. All patients had intraoperative sonographic examinations. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the images was performed. Overall image quality of SE_EPI sequences was better than SE (p<0.001) and similar to TSE_SPIR sequences. There were fewer motion and ghost artifacts on SE_EPI and TSE_SPIR images compared to SE images (p<0.001). Susceptibility artifacts were statistically equivalent on SE_EPI and SE images (p<0.001) while chemical shift artifacts were equally observed on SE and SE_EPI sequences. Overall image quality of EPI-SE and TSE_SPIR sequences was better compared to SE sequences. There was no significant difference in the number of lesions detected by each of the three sequences. Quantitative analysis showed that liver/lesion contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of liver, lesion, spleen was higher on TSE_SPIR sequences (p<0.001) while SE_EPI and SE sequences showed non-significant differences (p>0.05). SE_EPI sequences of the liver resulted in fewer artifacts and shorter acquisition times than SE sequences. They provide a diagnostic performance similar to TSE_SPIR and better than that of SE sequences.  相似文献

The high sensitivity but low specificity of breast MRI has prompted exploration of breast (1)H MRS for breast cancer detection. However, several obstacles still prevent the routine application of in vivo breast (1)H MRS, including poor spatial resolution, long acquisition time associated with conventional multi-voxel MRS imaging (MRSI) techniques, and the difficulty of "extra" lipid suppression in a magnetic field with relatively poor achievable homogeneity compared to the brain. Using a combination of a recently developed echo-filter (EF) suppression technique and an elliptical sampling scheme, we demonstrate the feasibility of overcoming these difficulties. It is robust (the suppression technique is insensitive to magnetic field inhomogeneity), fast (acquisition time of about 12 min) and offers high spatial resolution (up to 0.6 cm(3) per voxel at 1.5 T with a TE of only 60 ms). This approach should be even better at 3 T with higher resolution and/or shorter TE.  相似文献

In this paper we present a pulse sequence that combines a displacement-encoded stimulated echo with rapid sampling of k-space by means of turbo spin echo imaging. The stimulated echo enables the use of long observation times between the two pulsed field gradients that sample q-space completely. Propagators, constructed with long observation times, could discriminate slowly flowing protons from diffusing protons, as shown in a phantom in which a plug flow with linear velocity of 50microm/s could clearly be distinguished from stationary water. As a biological application the apparent diffusion constant in longitudinal direction of a transverse image of a maize plant stem had been measured as a function of observation time. Increasing contrast in the apparent diffusion constant image with increasing observation times were caused by differences in plant tissue: although the plant stem did not take up any water, the vascular bundles, concentrated in the outer ring of the stem, could still be discerned because of their longer unrestricted diffusional pathways for water in the longitudinal direction compared to cells in the parenchymal tissue. In the xylem region of a tomato pedicel flowing water could be distinguished from a large amount of stationary water. Linear flow velocities up to 0.67 mm/s were measured with an observation time of 180 ms.  相似文献

We describe the use of two-dimensional ultrashort echo time (2D UTE) sequences with minimum TEs of 8 μs to image and quantify cortical bone on a clinical 3T scanner. An adiabatic inversion pulse was used for long T(2) water and fat signal suppression. Adiabatic inversion prepared UTE acquisitions with varying TEs were used for T(2) measurement. Saturation recovery UTE acquisitions were used for T(1) measurement. Bone water concentration was measured with the aid of an external reference phantom. UTE techniques were evaluated on cadaveric specimens and healthy volunteers. A signal-to-noise ratio of around 30, contrast-to-noise ratio of around 27/20 between bone and muscle/fat were achieved in tibia in vivo with a nominal voxel size of 0.23 × 0.23 × 6.0 mm(3) in a scan time of 5 min. A mean T(1) of 223 ± 11 ms and mean T(2) of 390 ± 19 μs were found. Mean bone water concentrations of 23.3 ± 1.6% with UTE and 21.7 ± 1.3% with adiabatic inversion prepared UTE sequences were found in tibia in five normal volunteers. The results show that in vivo qualitative and quantitative evaluation of cortical bone is feasible with 2D UTE sequences.  相似文献

PurposeThe purpose of our study was to use Dual-TR STE-MR protocol as a clinical tool for cortical bone free water quantification at 1.5 T and validate it by comparing the obtained results (MR-derived results) with dehydration results.MethodsHuman studies were compliant with HIPPA and were approved by the institutional review board. Short Echo Time (STE) MR imaging with different Repetition Times (TRs) was used for quantification of cortical bone free water T1 (T1free) and concentration (ρfree). The proposed strategy was compared with the dehydration technique in seven bovine cortical bone samples. The agreement between the two methods was quantified by using Bland and Altman analysis. Then we applied the technique on a cross-sectional population of thirty healthy volunteers (18F/12M) and examined the association of the biomarkers with age.ResultsThe mean values of ρfree for bovine cortical bone specimens were quantified as 4.37% and 5.34% by using STE-MR and dehydration techniques, respectively. The Bland and Altman analysis showed good agreement between the two methods along with the suggestion of 0.99% bias between them. Strong correlations were also reported between ρfree (r2 = 0.62) and T1free and age (r2 = 0.8). The reproducibility of the method, evaluated in eight subjects, yielded an intra-class correlation of 0.95.ConclusionSTE-MR imaging with dual-TR strategy is a clinical solution for quantifying cortical bone ρfree and T1free.  相似文献

Tissues with very short transverse relaxation time (T2) cannot be detected using conventional magnetic resonance (MR) sequences due to the rapid decay of excited MR signals. In this work, a multiecho sequence employing half-pulse excitation and spiral sampling was developed for ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging of tissues with short T2. Spiral readout gradients were measured and precompensated to reduce gradient distortions due to eddy currents and gradient anisotropy. The effects of spatial blurring due to fast signal decay were investigated experimentally through spiral UTE (SUTE) imaging of rubber bands with different spiral sampling duration. The unwanted long T2 signals were suppressed through the use of an inversion pulse and nulling, and/or subtraction of a later echo image from the initial one. This technique has been applied to imaging of the short T2 components in brain white matter, knee cartilage, bone and carotid vessel wall of normal volunteers at 1.5 T. Preliminary results show high spatial resolution and excellent image contrast for a variety of short T2 tissues in the human body under a relatively short scan time. A quantitative comparison was also made between radial UTE and SUTE in terms of signal-to-noise ratio efficiency.  相似文献

While most proton ((1)H) spectra acquired in vivo utilize selective suppression of the solvent signal for more sensitive detection of signals from the dilute metabolites, recent reports have demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of collecting in vivo data without solvent attenuation. When these acquisitions are performed at short echo times, the presence of frequency modulations of the water resonance may become an obstacle to the identification and quantitation of metabolite resonances. The present report addresses the characteristics, origin, and elimination of these sidebands. Sideband amplitudes were measured as a function of delay time between gradient pulse and data collection, as a function of gradient pulse amplitude, and as a function of spatial location of the sample for each of the three orthogonal gradient sets. Acoustic acquisitions were performed to demonstrate the correlation between mechanical vibration resonances and the frequencies of MR sidebands. A mathematical framework is developed and compared with the experimental results. This derivation is based on the theory that these frequency modulations are induced by magnetic field fluctuations generated by the transient oscillations of gradient coils.  相似文献

In this paper, we aimed to investigate the feasibility of direct visualization of myelin, including myelin lipid and myelin basic protein (MBP), using two-dimensional ultrashort echo time (2D UTE) sequences and utilize phase information as a contrast mechanism in phantoms and in volunteers. The standard UTE sequence was used to detect both myelin and long T2 signal. An adiabatic inversion recovery UTE (IR-UTE) sequence was used to selectively detect myelin by suppressing signal from long T2 water protons. Magnitude and phase imaging and T2* were investigated on myelin lipid and MBP in the forms of lyophilized powders as well as paste-like phantoms with the powder mixed with D2O, and rubber phantoms as well as healthy volunteers. Contrast to noise ratio (CNR) between white and gray matter was measured. Both magnitude and phase images were generated for myelin and rubber phantoms as well white matter in vivo using the IR-UTE sequence. T2* values of ~ 300 μs were comparable for myelin paste phantoms and the short T2* component in white matter of the brain in vivo. Mean CNR between white and gray matter in IR-UTE imaging was increased from − 7.3 for the magnitude images to 57.4 for the phase images. The preliminary results suggest that the IR-UTE sequence allows simultaneous magnitude and phase imaging of myelin in vitro and in vivo.  相似文献

In this paper,a sidelobe suppression method using nonuniformly spaced array with aperture apodization processing is proposed for underwater acoustic imaging in near field, which is studied both in theory and experiment. The focused beamforming based on spherical wave propagation theory is used in the method.Firstly, the nonuniform array with low sidelobe is designed for suppressing the sidelobe of one-way beam pattern by spacing perturbation. Then, applying the aperture apodization technique to underwater acoustic imaging, the different size apertures for transmitting and receiving are used for further suppressing the sidelobe of two-way beam pattern. The experimental results from water tank show that the proposed method can suppress the sidelobe more effectively only with fractional mainlobe width increase.Since the method is simple-realized,the imaging system can be simplified as well as achieving improved performance.

Recently, a new technique has been demonstrated which effectively refocusses the dephasing effects of spins moving during application of MR imaging gradients. This paper presents an analysis of imaging axes significance in spin dephasing for motion occurring along the slice select, read and phase-encoding directions. A flow phantom under constant flow conditions in all experiments was used to provide complete spin dephasing when "traditional" imaging gradients were used. The MAST technique was used to refocus along various combinations of imaging axes, and variable number of terms from the Taylor expansion of motion along them. Results indicate that motion along any imaging axis can be refocussed effectively when MAST gradients are used along only the slice select and read axis.  相似文献

Multislice proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (1H MRSI) at 25 ms echo time was used to measure concentrations of myo-inositol (mI), N-acetylaspartate (NAA), and creatine (Cr) and choline (Cho) in ten normal subjects between 22 and 84 years of age (mean age 44 +/- 18 years). By co-analysis with MRI based tissue segmentation results, metabolite distributions were analyzed for each tissue type and for different brain regions. Measurement reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Significant differences in metabolite distributions were found for all metabolites. mI of frontal gray matter was 84% of parietal gray matter and 87% of white matter. NAA of frontal gray matter was 86% of parietal gray matter and 85% of white matter. Cho of frontal gray matter was 125% of parietal gray matter and 59% of white matter and Cho of parietal gray matter was 47% of white matter. Cr of parietal gray matter was 113% of white matter. Reliability was relatively high (ICC from.70 to.93) for all metabolites in white matter and for NAA and Cr in gray matter, though limited (ICC less than.63) for mI and Cho in gray matter. These findings indicate that voxel gray/white matter contributions, regional variations in metabolite concentrations, and reliability limitations must be considered when interpreting 1H MR spectra of the brain.  相似文献

A parametric method for spatially resolved measurements for velocity autocorrelation functions, R(u)(tau) = , expressed as a sum of exponentials, is presented. The method is applied to a granular flow system of 2-mm oil-filled spheres rotated in a half-filled horizontal cylinder, which is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with velocity autocorrelation function R(u)(tau) = e(- ||tau ||/tau(c)), where tau(c) is the correlation time and D = tau(c) is the diffusion coefficient. The pulsed-field-gradient NMR method consists of applying three different gradient pulse sequences of varying motion sensitivity to distinguish the range of correlation times present for particle motion. Time-dependent apparent diffusion coefficients are measured for these three sequences and tau(c) and D are then calculated from the apparent diffusion coefficient images. For the cylinder rotation rate of 2.3 rad/s, the axial diffusion coefficient at the top center of the free surface was 5.5 x 10(-6) m(2)/s, the correlation time was 3 ms, and the velocity fluctuation or granular temperature was 1.8 x 10(-3) m(2)/s(2). This method is also applicable to study transport in systems involving turbulence and porous media flows.  相似文献

A recently developed rf echo planar imaging method has been modified to rapidly generate spectroscopic information along one in-plane axis and spatial information along the other. The method allows the production of one-dimensional chemical shift images (1D CSIs) in acquisition times of 18 sec or less. A specific phase-encode-reordering algorithm provides convenient manipulation of T2 weighting, yielding partial suppression of short T2 species like muscle water. The method is demonstrated in phantoms and in vivo with 1D CSIs of human brain and limbs. Abnormal fat distribution is demonstrated in the calf of a patient with aggressive fibromatosis. The advantages of short acquisition times obtainable with SIRFEN are offset by limited spectral resolution, suggesting that primary applications will be confined to rapid spatial mapping of major spectral components.  相似文献

Stimulated-echo acquisition mode (STEAM) is a key pulse sequences in MRI in general, and in cardiac imaging in particular. Fat suppression is an important feature in cardiac imaging to improve visualization and eliminate off-resonance and chemical-shift artifacts. Nevertheless, fat suppression comes at the expense of reduced temporal resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The purpose of this study is to develop an efficient fat suppression method (Spectrally-Presaturated Modulation) for STEAM-based sequences to enable imaging with high temporal-resolution, high SNR, and no increase in scan time. The developed method is based on saturating the fat magnetization prior to applying STEAM modulation; therefore, only the water-content of the tissues is modulated by the sequence, resulting in fat-suppressed images without the need to run the fat suppression module during image acquisition. The potential significance of the proposed method is presented in two STEAM-based cardiac MRI applications: complementary spatial-modulation of magnetization (CSPAMM), and black-blood cine imaging. Phantom and in vivo experiments are conducted to evaluate the developed technique and compare it to the commonly implemented chemical-shift selective (CHESS) and water-excitation using spectral-spatial selective pulses (SSSP) fat suppression techniques. The results from the phantom and in vivo experiments show superior performance of the proposed method compared to the CHESS and SSSP techniques in terms of temporal resolution and SNR. In conclusion, the developed fat suppression technique results in enhanced image quality of STEAM-based images, especially in cardiac applications, where high temporal-resolution is imperative for accurate measurement of functional parameters and improved performance of image analysis algorithms.  相似文献
