Let X be a symmetric space—other than the hyperbolic plane—of strictly negative sectional curvature. Let G be the isometry group of X. We show that any quasi-isometry between non-uniform lattices in G is equivalent to (the restriction of) a group element of G which commensurates one lattice to the other. This result has the following corollaries:
  1. Two non-uniform lattices in G are quasi-isometric if and only if they are commensurable.
  2. Let Γ be a finitely generated group which is quasi-isometric to a non-uniform lattice in G. Then Γ is a finite extension of a non-uniform lattice in G.
  3. A non-uniform lattice in G is arithmetic if and only if it has infinite index in its quasi-isometry group.

We compute the quasi-isometry group of an irreducible nonuniform lattice in a semisimple Lie group with finite center and no rank one factors, and show that any two such lattices are quasi-isometric if and only if they are commensurable up to conjugation.

We prove the Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg conjecture for cocompact Fuchsian groups, thereby giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed spin manifold of dimension greater than four with fundamental group cocompact Fuchsian to admit a metric of positive scalar curvature.

A family of Friedrichs models under rank one perturbations hμ(p), p(−π,π]3, μ>0, associated to a system of two particles on the three-dimensional lattice is considered. We prove the existence of a unique eigenvalue below the bottom of the essential spectrum of hμ(p) for all non-trivial values of p under the assumption that hμ(0) has either a threshold energy resonance (virtual level) or a threshold eigenvalue. The threshold energy expansion for the Fredholm determinant associated to a family of Friedrichs models is also obtained.  相似文献

We say that a rank-unimodal poset P has rapidly decreasing rank numbers, or the RDR property, if above (resp. below) the largest ranks of P, the size of each level is at most half of the previous (resp. next) one. We show that a finite rank-unimodal, rank-symmetric, normalized matching, RDR poset of width w has a partition into w chains such that the sizes of the chains are one of two consecutive integers. In particular, there exists a partition of the linear lattices Ln(q) (subspaces of an n-dimensional vector space over a finite field, ordered by inclusion) into chains such that the number of chains is the width of Ln(q) and the sizes of the chains are one of two consecutive integers.  相似文献

This paper concerns the memoryless quasi-Newton method, that is precisely the quasi-Newton method for which the approximation to the inverse of Hessian, at each step, is updated from the identity matrix. Hence its search direction can be computed without the storage of matrices. In this paper, a scaled memoryless symmetric rank one (SR1) method for solving large-scale unconstrained optimization problems is developed. The basic idea is to incorporate the SR1 update within the framework of the memoryless quasi-Newton method. However, it is well-known that the SR1 update may not preserve positive definiteness even when updated from a positive definite matrix. Therefore we propose the memoryless SR1 method, which is updated from a positive scaled of the identity, where the scaling factor is derived in such a way that positive definiteness of the updating matrices are preserved and at the same time improves the condition of the scaled memoryless SR1 update. Under very mild conditions it is shown that, for strictly convex objective functions, the method is globally convergent with a linear rate of convergence. Numerical results show that the optimally scaled memoryless SR1 method is very encouraging.  相似文献

We prove that if f is a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the compact manifold M with one-dimensional center bundle, then the logarithm of the spectral radius of the map induced by f on the real homology groups of M is smaller or equal to the topological entropy of f. This is a particular case of the Shub's entropy conjecture, which claims that the same conclusion should be true for any C1 map on any compact manifold.  相似文献

We prove that the Euler characteristic of an even-dimensional compact manifold with positive (nonnegative) sectional curvature is positive (nonnegative) provided that the manifold admits an isometric action of a compact Lie group with principal isotropy group and cohomogeneity such that . We find sharp absolute constants C1 and C2 with the following property: every well-rounded lattice of rank 3 in a Euclidean space has a minimal basis so that the solid angle spanned by these basis vectors lies in the interval [C1,C2]. In fact, we show that these absolute bounds hold for a larger class of lattices than just well-rounded, and the upper bound holds for all. We state a technical condition on the lattice that may prevent it from satisfying the absolute lower bound on the solid angle, in which case we derive a lower bound in terms of the ratios of successive minima of the lattice. We use this result to show that among all spherical triangles on the unit sphere in RN with vertices on the minimal vectors of a lattice, the smallest possible area is achieved by a configuration of minimal vectors of the (normalized) face centered cubic lattice in R3. Such spherical configurations come up in connection with the kissing number problem.  相似文献

It is proved that the spaces of index one minimal surfaces and stable constant mean curvature surfaces with genus greater than one in (non fixed) flat three manifolds are compact in a strong sense: given a sequence of any of the above surfaces we can extract a convergent subsequence of both the surfaces and the ambient manifolds in the topology. These limits preserve the topological type of the surfaces and the affine diffeomorphism class of the ambient manifolds. Some applications to the isoperimetric problem are given.

By building a second-order adjoint difference equations on nonuniform lattices, the generalized Rodrigues type representation for the second kind solution of a second-order difference equation of hypergeometric type on nonuniform lattices is given. The general solution of the equation in the form of a combination of a standard Rodrigues formula and a ‘generalized’ Rodrigues formula is also established.  相似文献
