Using an example of two coupled waveguides, we construct a periodic second-order differential operator acting in a Euclidean domain and having spectral gaps whose edges are attained strictly inside the Brillouin zone. The waveguides are modeled by the Laplacian in two infinite strips of different width that have a common interior boundary. On this common boundary, we impose the Neumann boundary condition, but cut out a periodic system of small windows, while on the remaining exterior boundary we impose the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is shown that, by varying the widths of the strips and the distance between the windows, one can control the location of the extrema of the band functions as well as the number of the open gaps. We calculate the leading terms in the asymptotics for the gap lengths and the location of the extrema.  相似文献

In this paper we study a simplified version of a mathematical model that describes the eigenfrequencies and eigenmotions of a coupled system consisting of a set of tubes (or a tube bundle) immersed in an incompressible perfect fluid. The fluid is assumed to be contained in a rectangular cavity, and the tubes are assumed to be identical, and periodically distributed in the cavity. The mathematical model that governs this physical problem is an elliptic differential eigenvalue problem consisting of the Laplace equation with a nonlocal boundary condition on the holes, and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition on the boundary of the cavity. In the simplified model that we study in this paper, the Neumann condition is replaced by a periodic boundary condition. Our goal in studying this simple version is to derive some basic properties of the problem that could serve as a guide to envisage similar properties for the original model. In practical situations, this kind of problem needs to be solved for tube bundles containing a very large number of tubes. Then the numerical analysis of these problems is in practice very expensive. Several approaches to overcome this difficulty have been proposed in the last years using homogenization techniques. Alternatively, we propose in this paper an approach that consists in obtaining an explicit decomposition of the problem into a finite family of subproblems, which can be easily solved numerically. Our study is based on a generalized notion of periodic function, and on a decomposition theorem for periodic functions that we introduce in the paper. Our results rely on the theory of almost periodic functions, and they provide a simple numerical method for obtaining approximations of all the eigenvalues of the problem for any number of tubes in the cavity. This paper is concerned with a class of periodic degenerate parabolic system with time delays in a bounded domain under mixed boundary condition. Under locally Lipschitz condition on reaction functions, we apply Schauder fixed point theorem to obtain the existence of periodic solutions of the periodic problem. With quasi-monotonicity in addition, we also show that the periodic problem has a maximal and a minimal periodic solutions. Applications of the obtained results are also given to some nonlinear diffusion models arising from ecology.  相似文献

Our main idea is to decompose the stochastic process into a deterministic term and a new stochastic term with zero mean value. Then by using the contraction mapping principle and Leray-Schauder fixed point theorem, we obtain the existence theorem. Finally, we explain our main results by an elementary example.  相似文献

We study the properties of wave operators satisfying the periodicity condition with respect to time and homogeneous boundary conditions of the third kind and of Dirichlet type. We prove the existence of a nontrivial periodic (in time) sine-Gordon solution with homogeneous boundary conditions of the third kind and of Dirichlet type. We obtain theorems on the existence of periodic solutions of a quasilinear wave equation with variable (in x) coefficients and a boundary condition of the third kind.  相似文献

A two-dimensional Steklov-type spectral problem for the Laplacian in a domain divided into two parts by a perforated interface with a periodic microstructure is considered. The Steklov boundary condition is set on the lateral sides of the channels, a Neumann condition is specified on the rest of the interface, and a Dirichlet and Neumann condition is set on the outer boundary of the domain. Two-term asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions of this spectral problem are constructed.  相似文献

We study a third-order dispersive linear evolution equation on the finite interval subject to an initial condition and inhomogeneous boundary conditions but, in place of one of the three boundary conditions that would typically be imposed, we use a nonlocal condition, which specifies a weighted integral of the solution over the spatial interval. Via adaptations of the Fokas transform method (or unified transform method), we obtain a solution representation for this problem. We also study the time periodic analog of this problem, and thereby obtain long time asymptotics for the original problem with time periodic boundary and nonlocal data.  相似文献

It is shown that the set of hybrid one-dimensional reversible cellular automata (CA) with the periodic boundary condition is a regular set. This has several important consequences. For example, it allows checking whether a given CA is reversible and the random generation of a reversible CA from the uniform distribution, both using time polynomial in the size of the CA. Unfortunately, the constant term in the resulting random generation algorithm is much too large to be of practical use. We show that for the less general case of null boundary (NB) CA, this constant can be reduced drastically, hence facilitating a practical algorithm for uniform random generation. Our techniques are further applied asymptotically to count the number of reversible NBCA.  相似文献

In this paper we consider boundary value problems in perforated domains with periodic structures and cavities of different scales, with the Neumann condition on some of them and mixed boundary conditions on others. We take a case when cavities with mixed boundary conditions have so called critical size (see [1]) and cavities with the Neumann conditions have the scale of the cell. We consider a Dirichlet boundary control problem posed in an oscillating boundary domain governed by a biharmonic equation. Homogenization of a PDE with a non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on the oscillating boundary is one of the hardest problems. Here, we study the homogenization of the problem by converting it into an equivalent interior control problem. Effects of periodic and Neumann boundary conditions on a nonlocal prey–predator model are investigated. Two types of kernel functions with finite supports are used to characterize the nonlocal interactions. These kernel functions are modified to handle the Neumann boundary condition. Numerical techniques to find the Turing and spatial-Hopf thresholds for Neumann boundary condition are also described. For a fixed range of nonlocal interaction with a given kernel function, Turing bifurcation curves corresponding to both the boundary conditions are close to each other. The same is true for the spatial-Hopf bifurcation curves too. However, the nonlinear solutions inside the Turing domain as well as spatial-Hopf domain depend on the boundary condition. Thus, boundary conditions play important roles in a nonlocal model of prey-predator interaction.  相似文献

The existence and multiplicity of positive solutions are established to periodic boundary value problems for singular nonlinear second order ordinary differential equations. The arguments are based only upon the positivity of the Green's functions and the Krasnosel'skii fixed point theorem. The two‐dimensional scattering problem for time‐harmonic plane waves in an isotropic elastic medium and an effectively infinite periodic surface is considered. A radiation condition for quasi‐periodic solutions similar to the condition utilized in the scattering of acoustic waves by one‐dimensional diffraction gratings is proposed. Under this condition, uniqueness of solution to the first and third boundary‐value problems is established. We then proceed by introducing a quasi‐periodic free field matrix of fundamental solutions for the Navier equation. The solution to the first boundary‐value problem is sought as a superposition of single‐ and double‐layer potentials defined utilizing this quasi‐periodic matrix.
