We prove that any metric of positive scalar curvature on a manifold X extends to the trace of any surgery in codim > 2 on X to a metric of positive scalar curvature which is product near the boundary. This provides a direct way to construct metrics of positive scalar curvature on compact manifolds with boundary. We also show that the set of concordance classes of all metrics with positive scalar curvature on S n is a group.  相似文献

We establish new necessary and sufficient conditions for the discreteness of spectrum and strict positivity of magnetic Schrödinger operators with positive scalar potentials. We also derive two-sided estimates for the bottoms of the spectrum and essential spectrum. The main idea is to optimize the gauges of the magnetic field on cubes, thus reducing the quadratic form on the cubes to ones without magnetic field (but with appropriately adjusted scalar potentials).  相似文献

In this paper, we study Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature. We find that a non-Riemannian quantity is closely related to the flag curvature. We show that the flag curvature is weakly isotropic if and only if this non-Riemannian quantity takes a special form. This will lead to a better understanding on Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature.   相似文献

In this paper we study positive Einstein curvature which is a condition on the Riemann curvature tensor intermediate between positive scalar curvature and positive sectional curvature. We prove some constructions and obstructions for positive Einstein curvature on compact manifolds generalizing similar well known results for the scalar curvature. Finally, because our problem is relatively new, many open questions are included.  相似文献

In this paper, we borrowed some ideas from general relativity and find a Robinson-type identity for the overdetermined system of partial differential equations in the Fischer-Marsden conjecture. We proved that if there is a nontrivial solution for such an overdetermined system on a 3-dimensional, closed manifold with positive scalar curvature, then the manifold contains a totally geodesic 2-sphere.

We solve the problem of describing scaling factors of a homogeneous isotropic space-time such that the exact solution for the scalar field with a nonconformal coupling to curvature can be obtained from solutions for the conformally coupled field by redefining the mass and momentum. We give explicit expressions in the form of Abelian integrals for the dependence of time on the scaling factor in these cases. We obtain an exact solution for the scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet-type curvature and show that the corresponding nonconformal contributions can dominate in particle creation by the gravitational field.  相似文献

We consider a method for seeking exact solutions of the equation of a nonlocal scalar field in a nonflat metric. In the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, the proposed method can be used in the case of an arbitrary potential except linear and quadratic potentials, and it allows obtaining solutions in quadratures depending on two arbitrary parameters. We find exact solutions for an arbitrary cubic potential, which consideration is motivated by string field theory, and also for exponential, logarithmic, and power potentials. We show that the k-essence field can be added to the model to obtain exact solutions satisfying all the Einstein equations.  相似文献

We study a class of Finsler metrics which contains the class of P-reducible metrics. Finsler metrics in this class are called generalized P-reducible metrics. We consider generalized P-reducible metrics with scalar flag curvature and find a condition under which these metrics reduce to C-reducible metrics. This generalizes Matsumoto’s theorem, which describes the equivalency of C-reducibility and P-reducibility on Finsler manifolds with scalar curvature. Then we show that generalized P-reducible metrics with vanishing stretch curvature are C-reducible.  相似文献

We discuss the geography problem of closed oriented 4-manifolds that admit a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature, and use it to survey mathematical work employed to address Gromov’s observation that manifolds with positive scalar curvature tend to be inessential by focusing on the four-dimensional case. We also point out an strengthening of a result of Carr and its extension to the non-orientable realm.  相似文献

Local Thermal Equilibrium States and Quantum Energy Inequalities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper we investigate the energy distribution of states of a linear scalar quantum field with arbitrary curvature coupling on a curved spacetime which fulfill some local thermality condition. We find that this condition implies a quantum energy inequality for these states, where the (lower) energy bounds depend only on the local temperature distribution and are local and covariant (the dependence of the bounds other than on temperature is on parameters defining the quantum field model, and on local quantities constructed from the spacetime metric). Moreover, we also establish the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) for such locally thermal states, under growth conditions on their local temperature and under conditions on the free parameters entering the definition of the renormalized stress-energy tensor. These results hold for a range of curvature couplings including the cases of conformally coupled and minimally coupled scalar field. Submitted: February 27, 2008. Accepted: May 5, 2008.  相似文献

We study a class of Riemannian almost product metrics on the tangent bundle of a smooth manifold. This class includes the Sasaki and Cheeger-Gromoll metrics as special cases. For this class of metrics, we find the dependence of the scalar curvature of the tangent bundle on objects of the base manifold. For the case in which the base manifold is a space of constant sectional curvature, we obtain conditions on the metric and the dimension of the base under which the scalar curvature of the tangent bundle is constant. For special cases of metrics of the class considered, we find the intervals on which the scalar curvature of the tangent bundle treated as a function of the sectional curvature of the base has constant sign.  相似文献

In this paper we consider Hamilton's Ricci flow on a 3-manifold with a metric of positive scalar curvature. We establish several a priori estimates for the Ricci flow which we believe are important in understanding possible singularities of the Ricci flow. For Ricci flow with initial metric of positive scalar curvature, we obtain a sharp estimate on the norm of the Ricci curvature in terms of the scalar curvature (which is not trivial even if the initial metric has non-negative Ricci curvature, a fact which is essential in Hamilton's estimates [R.S. Hamilton, Three-manifolds with positive Ricci curvature, J. Differential Geom. 17 (1982) 255-306]), some L2-estimates for the gradients of the Ricci curvature, and finally the Harnack type estimates for the Ricci curvature. These results are established through careful (and rather complicated and lengthy) computations, integration by parts and the maximum principles for parabolic equations.  相似文献

Motivated by the definition of combinatorial scalar curvature given by Cooper and Rivin, we introduce a new combinatorial scalar curvature. Then we define the discrete quasi-Einstein metric, which is a combinatorial analogue of the constant scalar curvature metric in smooth case. We find that discrete quasi-Einstein metric is critical point of both the combinatorial Yamabe functional and the quadratic energy functional we defined on triangulated 3-manifolds. We introduce combinatorial curvature flows, including a new type of combinatorial Yamabe flow, to study the discrete quasi-Einstein metrics and prove that the flows produce solutions converging to discrete quasi-Einstein metrics if the initial normalized quadratic energy is small enough. As a corollary, we prove that nonsingular solution of the combinatorial Yamabe flow with nonpositive initial curvatures converges to discrete quasi-Einstein metric. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the discrete dual-Laplacian, which we interpret as the Jacobian matrix of curvature map.  相似文献

We study the evolution by mean curvature of a smooth n–dimensional surface , compact and with positive mean curvature. We first prove an estimate on the negative part of the scalar curvature of the surface. Then we apply this result to study the formation of singularities by rescaling techniques, showing that there exists a sequence of rescaled flows converging to a smooth limit flow of surfaces with nonnegative scalar curvature. This gives a classification of the possible singular behaviour for mean convex surfaces in the case . Received July 11,1997 / Accepted November 14, 1997  相似文献

We get optimal lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the Dirac-Witten operator of compact(with or without boundary) spacelike hypersurfaces of Lorentian manifold satisfying certain conditions, just in terms of the mean curvature and the scalar curvature and the spinor energy-momentum tensor. In the limiting case, the spacelike hypersurface is either maximal and Einstein manifold with positive scalar curvature or Ricci-flat manifold with nonzero constant mean curvature.  相似文献

In this paper we address the issue of uniformly positive scalar curvature on noncompact 3-manifolds. In particular we show that the Whitehead manifold lacks such a metric, and in fact that \mathbbR3{\mathbb{R}^3} is the only contractible noncompact 3-manifold with a metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature. We also describe contractible noncompact manifolds of higher dimension exhibiting this curvature phenomenon. Lastly we characterize all connected oriented 3-manifolds with finitely generated fundamental group allowing such a metric.  相似文献

In this paper we extend the local scalar curvature rigidity result in Brendle and Marques (J Differ Geom 88:379–394, 2011) to a small domain on general vacuum static spaces, which confirms the interesting dichotomy of local surjectivity and local rigidity about the scalar curvature in general in the light of the paper (Corvino, Commun Math Phys 214:137–189, 2000). We obtain the local scalar curvature rigidity of bounded domains in hyperbolic spaces. We also obtain the global scalar curvature rigidity for conformal deformations of metrics in the domains, where the lapse functions are positive, on vacuum static spaces with positive scalar curvature, and show such domains are maximal, which generalizes the work in Hang and Wang (Commun Anal Geom 14:91–106, 2006).  相似文献

For a Kähler metric, the Riemannian scalar curvature is equal to twice the Chern scalar curvature. The question we address here is whether this equivalence can hold for a non-Kähler Hermitian metric. For such metrics, if they exist, the Chern scalar curvature would have the same geometric meaning as the Riemannian scalar curvature. Recently, Liu–Yang showed that if this equivalence of scalar curvatures holds even in average over a compact Hermitian manifold, then the metric must in fact be Kähler. However, we prove that a certain class of non-compact complex manifolds do admit Hermitian metrics for which this equivalence holds. Subsequently, the question of to what extent the behavior of said metrics can be dictated is addressed and a classification theorem is proved.  相似文献
