This paper is concerned with molecular phenomena appearing during deformation of poly(vinyl chloride) under tensile stress conditions. By using indirect techniques (reactions with radical acceptors, with vinylic monomers, electron microscopy) the formation of free radicals, appearing as a consequence of splitting of chemical bonds, is evidenced. The amount of reacted radical acceptor or monomer was proved to be related to solution concentration and to the duration of mechanical stress.  相似文献

An investigation of the thermal stability of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) revealed that PVAc acts as a stabilizer as concerns thermal and photochemical degradation when the processes take place in air. The temperatures of decomposition of these blends are higher than that of pure PMMA. The efficiency of photodegradation and photooxidation in the blends is lower than that of pure PMMA.  相似文献

Cationically polymerizable olefins can be efficiently grafted onto poly(vinyl chloride) in the presence of alkylaluminum compounds. The substitution of labile chlorines in PVC by various branches yields a product of improved thermal stability as compared with unmodified PVC. Thus the grafting of a few per cent of polyisobutylene or poly-butadiene onto PVC gives graft copolymers superior in thermal stability to the PVC backbone, as determined by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses as well as color development of molded films. At advanced stages of thermal degradation the thermal stability of poly(vinyl chloride)-g-isobutylene) (PVC-g-PIB is some 40°C superior to the unmodified PVC. In addition to grafting of polymer chains onto the PVC backbone, other methods are also available to achieve improved thermal stability. In pentane suspension, alkylaluminum compounds efficiently alkylate labile chlorines in PVC, and the product exhibits improved thermal stability. Alternatively, PVC carbonium ions can alkylate aromatic compounds, and these products also exhibit high heat stability. Based on the assumption that certain alkylaluminums quantitatively react with labile chlorines in PVC, it was estimated that 2–3% of the chlorines present in suspension-grade PVC are labile.  相似文献

The grafting preference of vinyl acetate onto the methine carbon of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) versus the acetate group of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was determined as part of an attempt to prepare novel branched PVOH from partially hydrolyzed PVAc. The results showed long chain grafting on the acetate groups of the PVAc units rather than the methine carbons of the PVOH or PVAc units. Decreasing the monomer or initiator concentration decreased the molecular weight of the graft copolymer formed. Of the initiators studied, ammonium persulfate gave the largest increase in copolymer molecular weight. Both hydrolysis and reacetylation combined with gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 13C-NMR of the fully hydrolyzed material were used to estimate the number and location of grafts. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Photochemical reactions of poly(vinyl cinnamylideneacetate) and its model compound were studied. The irradiation of these compounds with light of wavelength longer than 300 nm produced dimeric forms of cinnamylideneacetyl groups, which were effectively dissociated into the monomeric forms by the irradiation with 254 nm light.  相似文献

A convenient method has been developed for the polymerization of vinyl chloride at low temperatures (to at least ?75°C) by using a tungsten–iodine rather than an ultraviolet lamp, and uranyl nitrate as sensitizer. The use of predominantly visible light minimizes degradation reactions sometimes encountered with ultraviolet light. Measurements of the fraction of racemic (or syndiotactic) diads and per cent crystallinity confirm that the products resemble polymers prepared by other techniques, such as polymerization initiated by a boron alkyl. It is concluded, therefore, that the method can provide a useful alternate to the more common, organometallic system. Measurements of torsional modulus as a function of temperature were also made. As the temperature of polymerization is lowered, the fraction of racemic diads and the per cent crystallinity are increased. The higher the per cent crystallinity, the higher the glass temperature, the broader the glass transition, and the higher the modulus in the rubbery state. Thus, the increased stereoregularity permits the development of a higher level of crystallinity which, in turn, restricts the mobility of the polymer chains.  相似文献

A kraft lignin derivative (KLD) obtained by reaction with p-aminobenzoic acid/phthalic anhydride was blended with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by solution casting from DMSO. PVA and PVA/KLD films were exposed to ultraviolet radiation (24, 48, and 96 h) and analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PVA films show a loss of thermal stability due to irradiation. PVA/KLD reveals greater thermal stability than PVA and an increase in thermal stability after irradiation. These results suggest that the incorporation of KLD into PVA provides a gain in thermal and photochemical stability. FTIR, 1H NMR, DSC, and TG results obtained for the blends suggest that intermolecular interactions between PVA and KLD chains are present. SEM micrographs revealed blend miscibility for a KLD blend content of up to 15 wt%, as observed at magnification of 1000 times.  相似文献

Miscibility of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) with poly(viny acetate) (PVAc), poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA and poly(vinyl acetate-co-alcohol) (ACA copolymers) has been investigated over a wide composition range. Differentiaal scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicate that P2VP is immiscible with PVAC, PVA, and their copolymers over the whole composition range. In turn, P4VP appears to be immiscible with PVAC and PVA, but miscible with some ACA copolymers in certain range of composition. The P4VP-ACA phase diagram for different copolymer compositions has been determined. The variation of the glass transition temperature with composition for miscible mixtures was found to follow the Gordon-Taylor equation, with the parameter κ dependent upon copolymer composition. FTIR analysis of blends reveal the existence of specific interactions via hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl groups and the nitrogen of the pyridinic ring, which appear to be decisive for miscibility. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The reactions of poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) and poly(2-chloroethyl vinyl ether) (PCEVE) with various reagents were investigated using phase transfer catalyst (PTC) such as tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB), 18-crown-6 (CR6), and dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 (DCHC) is a solid—liquid two-phase system. Although the reactions of these polymers hardly occurred without PTC in nonpolar solvents such as toluene and diglyme under mild conditions, the addition of PTC caused the reactions to proceed smoothly under the same conditions. In addition, the reactions of PECH and PCEVE with a strong base such as potassium hydroxide proceeded selectively through β-elimination reaction to produce the polymers with pendant vinyl groups. These results suggested this method is useful for the syntheses of functional polymers. On the other hand, it turned out that quaternary ammonium salts such as TBAB have higher catalytic activity than crown ethers such as CRG and DCHE in these reactions. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of quaternary ammonium salts was strongly influenced by their chain length and the structure of the polymers.  相似文献

A thermoresponsive hydrogel was synthesized by radiation copolymerization of ethylene glycol vinyl ether (EGVE) and butyl vinyl ether (BVE) in the presence of cross-linking agent diethylene glycol divinyl ether. The gel was modified by a cell adhesion factor RGD by photochemical immobilization technique. While the unmodified hydrogel shows fully hydrated form at low temperatures (+4 °C) and it extensively dehydrates at 37 °C, the biomodified hydrogel still kept its thermoresponsive character after immobilization. The effectiveness of immobilization was checked with FTIR-ATR and XPS. The use of bioactive thermoresponsive hydrogels in cell culture applications was investigated. For this purpose, cell culture experiments were realized by L929 mouse fibroblasts. Cell attachment experiments revealed the effect of immobilized RGD with higher values of cell attachment (∼85%), which were obtained especially in the absence of serum. The thermoresponsive character of the hydrogel was useful for the application of low-temperature treatment in order to recover the attached viable cells from the surface of the hydrogel without using trypsin. When the culture temperature was decreased from 37 to 10 °C for 30 min ∼80% of the cells were detached from the hydrogel surface.  相似文献

The influence of the thermal treatment on the stability in time of the dispersion degree of films containing binary polymer mixtures, poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl acetate)/poly(methyl methacrylate), was studied by thermogravimetry and optical microscopy with phase contrast. The dispersion degree depends particularly on the composition of the polymer mixture and can be improved by thermal treatment at temperatures above the glass temperatures of both homopolymers. It seems that this thermal treatment yields exclusively metastable structures with a general tendency to phase separation in a short time after thermal treatment, the heterogeneity mixtures (as film) being more pronounced.  相似文献

The miscibility of poly(viny1 alcohol)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVA/PVP) blends is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD). The molecular orientation induced by uniaxial stretching of the blends is also examined by WAXD and birefringence measurements. It is shown by the DSC thermal analysis that the polymer pair is miscible, since a single glass transition temperature (Tg) is situated between the Tgs of the two homopolymers at every composition. The Tg versus composition curve does not follow a monotonic function but exhibits a cusp point at a PVP volume fraction of a little under 0.7, as in a case predicted by Kovacs' theory. The presence of a specific intermolecular interaction between the two polymers is suggested by an observed systematic depression in the melting point of the PVA component. A negative value of the polymer-polymer interaction parameter, χ12 = 0.35 (at 513 K), is estimated from a thermodynamic approach via a control experiment using samples crystallized isothermally at various temperatures. The extent of optical birefringence (Δn) of the drawn blends decreases drastically with increasing PVP content up to 80 wt %, when compared at a given draw ratio, and ultimately Δn is found to change from positive to negative at a critical PVP concentration of a little over 80 wt %. Discussion of the molecular orientation behavior takes into consideration a birefringence compensation effect in the miscible amorphous phase due to positive and negative contributions of oriented PVA and PVP, respectively.  相似文献

Dilation of poly(vinyl benzoate) and poly(vinyl butyral) accompanying sorption of carbon dioxide is measured with a cathetometer under pressures up to 50 atm at 25°C. Sorption isotherms for carbon dioxide in these polymers were also determined gravimetrically. Each dilation isotherm plotted versus pressure, as well as the sorption isotherm, showed an inflection point corresponding to the glass transition of the polymer-gas system. The dilation isotherms changed their form at that point from concave to convex to the pressure axis or to a straight line. Dilation and sorption isotherms exhibited time-dependent hysteresis below the inflection point but not above the point. Partial molar volumes of carbon dioxide in polymers, which were determined from dilation and sorption data above the point, were found to be independent of concentration and larger than those below the point. The latter volumes depended on concentration. Based upon the extended dual-mode sorption concept, which takes account of plasticization of polymer by sorbed gas, a dilation model was developed. Dilation data were described well by the model.  相似文献

A crosslinked network was formed by the reaction of partially saponified poly(vinyl acetate) and toluylene diisocyanate in benzene. The yield of gel was markedly dependent on the degree of saponification and the concentrations of polymer and diisocyanate. Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) was obtained by treating the poly(vinyl acetate) with a catalytic amount of sodium hydroxide in methanol without any change of the urethane crosslinks. The crosslink based on the urethane linkage was quantitatively cleaved by acids, especially by hydrobromic acid, releasing polymers of the same molecular weight as the original.  相似文献

It is a common view that poly(vinyl acetate) has many branches at the acetyl side group, but that the corresponding poly(vinyl alcohol) has little branching. In order to study the branching in poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl alcohol) which is formed by chain transfer to polymer, the polymerization of 14C-labeled vinyl acetate in the presence of crosslinked poly(vinyl acetate), which was able to be decrosslinked to give soluble polymers, was investigated at 60°C and 0°C. This system made it possible to separate as well as to distinguish the graft polymer from the newly polymerized homopolymer. Furthermore, the degree of grafting onto the acetoxymethyl group and onto the main chain were estimated. It became clear that, in the polymerization of vinyl acetate, chain transfer to the polymer main chain takes place about 2.4 times as frequently at 60°C as that to the acetoxy group and about 4.8 times as frequently at 0°C.  相似文献

In order to clarify the grafting behavior of vinyl trimethylacetate (VTMAc) onto poly-(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), the polymerization of a radioactive VTMAc in the presence of a crosslinked PVAc gel was studied in accordance with the experimental technique described in the previous papers. It was found that, at 60°C, the grafting onto the main chain of PVAc takes place about 2.8 times as readily as that onto the acetyl side group on PVAc.  相似文献

Radiation effects on the formation of conjugated double bonds in the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were investigated. Thin films of PVC and PVA were either irradiated with γ-rays at ambient temperature (pre-irradiation) and then subjected to thermal treatment, or irradiated at elevated temperatures (in situ irradiation). An extensive enhancement of the thermal degradation was observed for the pre-irradiation of the PVC films, which was more effective than the effect of the in situ irradiation at the same absorption dose. For the PVA degradation, however, the effect of the in situ irradiation was larger than that of the pre-irradiation. The results were explained and related mechanisms were discussed based on radiation-induced chemical reactions and their individual contributions to the thermal degradation behaviors of the two polymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The kninetics of acid-catalyzed acetalization and ketalization of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were systematically studied in completely homogeneous media with carefully selected solvents. Thus the acetalization reaction was run in water with six aldehydes [R1CHO (R1 = H, CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, i-C3H7, ClCH2)], whereas the ketalization in dimethylslfoxide with 11 ketones [R2CH3CO (R2 = CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, i-C3H7, n-C4H9, i-C4H9, tert-C4H9, C6H5CH2, C6H5CH2CH2), cyclopentanone, and cyclohexanone]. The latter was difficult to proceed in aqueous media. Both reactions were reversible and bimolecular and, despite the use of different solvents, gave similar heats of reaction (7.5 kcal/mol) and activation energies (ca. 15 kcal/mol) except for the case of formaldehyde and chloroacetaldehyde; however the equilibrium constants at 25°C showed that the acetalization is thermodynamically much more favored than the ketalization (ca. 5000 vs. 0.01–0.9), probably because of steric hindrance of the ketone substrate. The rate constants of hydrolysis (reverse reactions) for the poly(vinyl acetal) and poly(vinyl ketal) followed the Hammett-Taft equation to give a single p* (=3.60) that is very close to that for the hydrolysis of diethyl acetal and ketal. From these and other data, it was concluded that the polymer hydrolysis, as well as PVA acetalization and ketalization, are all electrophilic reaction where the formation of hemiacetal or hemiketal is the rate-determining step. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Solid poly(methyl vinyl-alt-maleimide), when subjected to heating at 100°C while being vacuum pumped at 0.1 mm Hg pressure, was converted to a copolymer in which a substantial portion of the imide groups were converted to anhydride groups. Similarly, heating at 100°C at atmospheric pressure in a circulating air oven brought about the same reaction but at a faster rate. This confirms the hypothesis that the formation of maleic anhydride comonomer units from poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-ammonium maleamate) not only proceeds directly by ring closure of amic acid formed by loss of ammonia but probably also includes, as a parallel pathway, hydrolysis by atmospheric moisture of maleimide comonomer units.  相似文献
