The mechanical behaviour of fibre-reinforced composites under transverse tension, compression and shear is studied using computational micromechanics. The representative volume element is constructed for fibre’s random distribution. The Drucker–Prager model and cohesive zone model are used to simulate the matrix damage and interfacial debonding, respectively. The stress distribution along the interface is studied using the model with only one fibre embedded in the matrix. It is found that the interface tensile failure at the equators of fibre firstly occurs under transverse tension; the interface shear failure firstly occurs under transverse compression; both the interface tensile failure and shear failure occur under transverse shear. The direction of fracture plane is perpendicular to the loading direction under transverse tension, 52.5° with the perpendicular direction under compression and 7.5° with the perpendicular or vertical direction under shear, respectively.

In composites, debonding at the fiber–matrix interface and matrix cracking due to loading or residual stresses can effect the mechanical properties. Here three different architectures — 3-directional orthogonal, 3-directional 8-harness satin weave and 4-directional in-plane multidirectional composites — are investigated and their effective properties are determined for different volume fractions using unit cell modeling with appropriate periodic boundary conditions. A cohesive zone model (CZM) has been used to simulate the interfacial debonding, and an octahedral shear stress failure criterion is used for the matrix cracking. The debonding and matrix cracking have significant effect on the mechanical properties of the composite. As strain increases, debonding increases, which produces a significant reduction in all the moduli of the composite. In the presence of residual stresses, debonding and resulting deterioration in properties occurs at much lower strains. Debonding accompanied with matrix cracking leads to further deterioration in the properties. The interfacial strength has a significant effect on debonding initiation and mechanical properties in the absence of residual stresses, whereas, in the presence of residual stresses, there is no effect on mechanical properties. A comparison of predicted results with experimental results shows that, while the tensile moduli E 11, E 33and shear modulus G 12 match well, the predicted shear modulus G 13 is much lower.

The transverse properties of unidirectional metal matrix composites (MMCs) are dominated by the fiber/matrix interfacial properties, residual stresses and matrix mechanical response. In order to monitor and study, in situ, the failure of interfaces in titanium-based composites subjected to transverse loading conditions, an ultrasonic imaging technique has been developed. The interface was imaged ultrasonically and the change in ultrasonic amplitude with the transverse loading was monitored, indicating the sensitivity of the technique to fracture and deformation of interfaces. This change in amplitude has been explained in terms of the multiple reflection theory of ultrasonic waves. The multiple reflection theory enabled estimation of the interfacial deformation and debonding as a function of loading. The ultrasonic technique was also used in conjunction with finite element modeling in order to quantify the fiber/matrix interfacial transverse strength in situ in MMCs.

Interfacial debonding behavior is studied for unidirectional fiber reinforced composites from both experimental and analytical viewpoints. A new type of two-dimensional unidirectional model composite is prepared using 10 boron fibers and transparent epoxy resin with two levels of interfacial strength. In situ observation of the internal mesoscopic fracture process is carried out using the single edge notched specimen under static loading. The matrix crack propagation, the interfacial debonding growth and the interaction between them are directly observed in detail. As a result, the interfacial debonding is clearly accelerated in specimens with weakly bonded fibers in comparison with those with strongly bonded fibers. Secondary, three-dimensional finite element analysis is carried out in order to reproduce the interfacial debonding behavior. The experimentally observed relation between the mesoscopic fracture process and the applied load is given as the boundary condition. We successfully evaluate the mode II interfacial debonding toughness and the effect of interfacial frictional shear stress on the apparent mode II energy release rate separately by employing the present model composite in combination with the finite element analysis. The true mode II interfacial debonding toughness for weaker interface is about 0.4 times as high as that for a stronger interface. The effect of the interfacial frictional shear stress on the apparent mode II energy release rate for the weak interface is about 0.07 times as high as that for the strong interface. The interfacial frictional shear stress and the coefficient of friction for weak interface are calculated as 0.25 and 0.4 times as high as those for strong interface, respectively.

A simplified calculation method for study of the growth of interfacial debonding between elastic fiber and elastic matrix ahead of the notch-tip in composites under displacement and stress controlled conditions was presented based on the shear lag approach in which the influences of residual stress and frictional shear stress at the debonded interface were incorporated. The calculation method was applied to a model two-dimensional composite. An outline is given of the difference and similarity in the growing behavior of the debonding between the displacement and stress controls, and of the influences of the residual stresses, frictional shear stress, the nature of the final cut component (fiber or matrix) and sample length on the debonding behavior.

Glass beads, non-modified and modified with coupling agent, were filled separately into high density polyethylene to obtain composite materials with different interfacial adhesion strengths. In situtensile tests reveal the damage mechanisms, which are mainly induced by the interfacial debonding. The interfacial debonding process is observed and studied. The debonding stress is found to be linearly related to the opening angle formed at two poles of the particles. Initial and final opening angles, in addition to the corresponding debonding stresses, are measured. The interfacial fracture energy obtained by using the Griffith fracture theory is found to be 0.028 J m-2 and 0.058 J m-2 for mechanical anchorage and physical entanglement across the interface, respectively. The stronger the interfacial adhesion, the smaller is the maximum opening angle and greater the debonding stress.

A calculation method based on the shear lag approach was presented to get an approximate estimate of influences of residual stresses and frictional shear stress at the debonded interface on the interfacial debonding behavior at the notch-tip along fiber direction in two-dimensional unidirectional double-edge-notched composites. With this method, the energy release rate for initiation and growth of debonding as a function of composite stress were calculated for some examples. The calculation results showed in outline how much the tensile and compressive residual stresses in the matrix and fiber along fiber direction, respectively, act to hasten the initiation and growth of the debonding when the final cut element in the notch is matrix, while they act to retard them when the final cut element is fiber, and how much the frictional shear stress at the debonded interface reduces the growth rate of the debonding.

In micromechanical tests for estimating fiber-matrix interfacial properties, such as the pull-out and microbond tests, fiber debonding from a matrix is often accompanied by friction in debonded areas. In the present study, force-displacement curves, which are usually recorded in these tests, were modeled with taking interfacial friction into consideration. The friction stress was assumed, as a first approximation, to be constant across the interface. Two different approaches to interfacial failure were used: the shear-lag approach with a stress-based debonding criterion (the ultimate interfacial shear strength) and the linear elastic fracture mechanics approach using the critical energy release rate as a condition for crack propagation. The force-displacement curves derived from both models are in good agreement with each other and with experimental micromechanical data. It was shown that any pull-out and microbond experiment comprises four stages: (1) linear loading up to the point where debonding starts; (2) stable crack propagation with friction-controlled debonding; (3) catastrophic debonding; and (4) post-debonding friction. Stable crack propagation was shown to be controlled by both friction and release of residual thermal stresses. An algorithm for estimating both fiber-matrix adhesion and interfacial friction from the microbond and pull-out tests data has been proposed.

The current work is concerned with the micro-mechanics of fracture of a SiC-fiber-reinforced barium osumilite (BMAS) ceramic matrix composite tested under both monotonic and cyclic tension. The double-edge notch (DEN) specimen configuration was employed in order to confine material damage within a predefined gage length. The imposition of successive loops of unloading to complete load relaxation and subsequent reloading were found to result in an increase by 20% in material strength as compared to pure tension; the finding is attributed to energy dissipation from large-scale interfacial debonding phenomena that dominated the post-elastic mechanical behavior of the composite. Cyclic loading also helped establish the axial residual stress state of the fibers in the composite, of tensile nature, via a well-defined common intersection point of unloading–reloading cycles. An approach consisting of the application of a translation vector in the stress–strain plane was successfully used to derive the residual stress-free properties of the composite and reconcile the scatter noted in elastic properties of specimens with respect to theoretical expectations.

_We consider fragmentation experiments as a set of experimental results for fiber break density as a function of applied strain. This paper explores the potential for using fracture mechanics or energy methods in interpreting fragmentation experiments. We found that energy does not control fiber fracture; instead, fiber fracture releases much more energy than required to fracture the fiber. The excess released energy can lead to other damage mechanisms such as interfacial debonding. By assuming that all the excess released energy causes interfacial debonding and balancing energy using the energy release rate for debonding, we were able to determine interfacial toughness from fragmentation experiments. A reliable determination of interfacial toughness requires prior knowledge of interphase stress-transfer properties, fiber failure properties, actual damage mechanisms, and the coefficient of friction at the interface.

The physical properties of solids determine their usefulness as structural materials. Metals have some disadvantageous characteristics which reduce their effectiveness in critical engineering applications. These limitations can be overcome by the use of certain types of fibrous reinforced composites which have become available over the last few years. However, these materials in turn have their own inherent limitations, particularly in their mode of fracture under overload conditions. In this review the basic properties of conventional fibrous composites are discussed, particular emphasis being given to physics of these failure processes. In an attempt to overcome some of these limitations a new type of fibre reinforced composite has been designed and preliminary research data on the physical properties of these systems has now been obtained. The primary reinforcing elements extend throughout the whole length of the composite but differ from others in that they do not fracture when the composite is subjected to a wide ranged of loading and deformation conditions. These characteristics are achieved because the interface between the primary reinforcing members and the rest of the composite structure is responsive to the local stress carried by the reinforcing members. This stress controlled decoupling/recoupling process is very broadly analogous to the transition between elastic and plastic deformation in metals and the physical principles underlying the design of the reinforcing members are outlined.Because the reinforcing members do not fracture any failure process is confined to the rest of the composite structure. Various interactions occur between the non-fracturing and fracturable parts of the system and these suppress crack growth in the latter, thus producing a structure possessing very considerable damage tolerance. A preliminary analysis of the basic physics of these interactions is given.Possible future developments of these materials are outlined. Also ways are discussed in which the simple analytical models, developed in the study of the fracture processes occuring these materials, amy be applied to more conventional fibrous composites.

Ternary blends of polypropylene/polycarbonate/poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) (PP/PC/SEBS) with varying SEBS contents were produced via melt blending in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The phase morphology of the resulting ternary blends and its relationship with bending and impact behaviors were studied. Transmission optical microscopy (TOM) of the crack tip damage zone and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of impact fractured surfaces were performed to characterize the fracture mechanism. With increasing SEBS content in the PP/PC/SEBS ternary blends, the number of PC/SEBS core-shell particles increased and the size of the core-shell particles enlarged. It was shown that with an SEBS content of 5%, the crack initiation resistance decreased and then was almost unchanged with further increase of SEBS content, while resistance to crack growth increased continuously with increasing of SEBS content. Preliminary analysis of the micromechanical deformation suggested that the high impact toughness observed for samples containing 20 and 30 wt% of SEBS could be attributed to cavitation of the rubbery shell and, consequently, shear yielding of the matrix. This plastic deformation absorbed a tremendous amount of energy. Due to low interfacial adhesion between PC particles and PP matrix in samples containing 5 and 10 wt% of SEBS, debonding occurred too early, so the occurrence of matrix shear yielding was delayed and resulted in premature interfacial failure and, hence, rapid crack propagation.

Abstract

We study interfacial debonding of several representative structures of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/pyrophillite-clay systems – both gallery-interface (polymer/clay interface in the interlayer region containing polymer between clay layers stacked parallel to each other) and matrix-interphase (polymer/clay interphase-region when individual clay layers are well separated and dispersed in the polymer matrix) – using molecular dynamics simulations, while explicitly accounting for shearing/sliding (i.e. Mode-II) deformation mode. Ten nanocomposite geometries (five 2-D periodic structures for tension and five 1-D periodic structures for shearing) were constructed to quantify the structure-property relations by varying the number density of polymer chains, length of polymer chains and model dimensions related to the interface deformation. The results were subsequently mapped into a cohesive traction–separation law, including evaluation of peak traction and work of separation that are used to characterise the interface load transfer for larger length scale micromechanical models. Results suggest that under a crack nucleation opening mode (i.e. Mode-I), the matrix-interphase exhibits noticeably greater strength and a greater work of separation compared to the gallery-interface; however, they were similar under the shearing/sliding mode of deformation. When compared to shearing/sliding, the tensile peak opening mode stresses were considerably greater but the displacement at the peak stress, the displacement at the final failure and the work of separation were considerably lower. Results also suggest that PVA/clay nanocomposites with higher degree of exfoliation compared with nanocomposites with higher clay-intercalation can potentially display higher strength under tension-dominated loading for a given clay volume fraction.

In this paper, the interface debonding and frictional slipping of carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) under two-stage cyclic fatigue loading have been investigated using micromechanics approach. Under cyclic fatigue loading, the fiber/matrix interface shear stress degrades with increasing cycle number due to interface wear. The synergistic effect of interface wear and fatigue loading sequence on interface debonding and frictional slipping has been analyzed. Based on the fatigue damage mechanism of fiber slipping relative to matrix, in the interface debonded region, upon unloading and subsequent reloading, the interface debonded length and interface slip lengths, i.e. interface counter-slip length and interface new-slip length, are determined using the fracture mechanics approach. The relationships between interface debonding, interface slipping, interface wear, cycle number, and different loading sequences are determined. There are two types of fatigue loading sequences considered, i.e. (1) cyclic loading under low peak stress for N1 cycles, and then high peak stress; and (2) cyclic loading under high peak stress for N1 cycles, and then low peak stress. The effects of peak stress level, interface wear, cycle number, and loading sequence on interface debonding and frictional slipping of fiber-reinforced CMCs have been analyzed. The fatigue hysteresis loops of cross-ply carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide composite corresponding to different cycle number under two-stage cyclic fatigue loading have been predicted.
