Abstract

The thermal properties of 4-octyloxyphenyl 4-(4-R-3-nitrobenzoyloxy) benzo-ates (1) and 4-(4-octyloxybenzoyloxy)phenyl 4-R-3-nitrobenzoates (2) have been examined, where R = hydrogen, halogens, alkyl and alkoxy groups. The derivatives of compound 1 incorporating hydrogen, halogens, methoxy and nitro groups show a smectic A phase having a bilayer arrangement, and the others with a long alkoxy group show the SA phase with the monolayer arrangement. The derivatives of compound 2 incorporating halogens, and the nitro group show the SA phase with the monolayer arrangement. The alkoxy derivatives show a smectic C phase as well as the nematic phase. The nitro group at the lateral position tends to increase the ratio of the SA-N transition temperature to the N-I. The effect of the nitro group on the smectic properties has been discussed in terms of the structural and electrostatic nature of the nitro group.  相似文献

This paper describes the effect of substituent and ester linkage on smectic properties for some derivatives of 4-R -phenyl 4-(4-octyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoates (1 ), 4-octyloxyphenyl 4-(4-R-benzyloxy)benzoates (2), 4-(4-octyloxybenzoyloxy)phenyl 4- R -benzoates (3), and 4-R-phenyl 4-octyloxyphenyl terephthalates (4) where R = OCH3, CH3, OC8H17, C8H17, halogens, CF3, OCF3, CN, NO2, etc. The thermal properties are discussed in terms of the electrostatic nature of the substituents and the relative orientation of the ester groups with respect to both terminal substituents. The substituent effect on the layer structure of the smectic A phase is also examined by means of a small angle X-ray analysis.  相似文献

A new series of 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocene compounds of the type [(η5-C5H4(CH2)nOC6H4C6H4CN]2Fe (3a-d, n = 5, 6, 8, 11) incorporating a variable length alkyloxy cyanobiphenyl unit has been prepared and their mesomorphic properties have been investigated. Compounds 3b, c and d exhibit a thermotropic smectic C phase and 3c also exhibits a monotropic smectic A phase over a fairly wide range near ambient temperature.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of new series of 1,2,4- and 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives (2a-f and 5a-f respectively) are reported. These compounds contain only one terminal flexible alkoxy chain, the other terminal substituent is a protecting benzyl group. All compounds of series 2 exhibit an enantiotropic nematic phase. The homologue with the longest chain (2f) displays an enantiotropic dimorphism smectic A- nematic. None of the compounds of series 5 shows mesomorphism and only crystal-isotropic transitions were observed. The liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray measurements. Luminescence properties, in chloroform solution, of 2f and the series 5 compounds were evaluated. Good photoluminescence quantum yields for compounds of series 5 were observed. Compound 2f, incorporating the 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring shows a very strong reduction in emissive properties.  相似文献

The effect of alkyl and alkoxy chain lengths on the layer structures of smectic A and C phases has been examined by X-ray diffraction measurements on three isomeric systems: 4-alkoxyphenyl and 4-n-alkylphenyl 4-[(4-octyloxyphenyl)carbonyloxy]benzoates (1); 4-octyloxyphenyl 4-[4-(octyloxyphenyl)carbonyloxy]benzoates (2); 4-octyloxyphenyl, 4-alkoxyphenyl and 4-n-alkylphenyl terephthalates (3); and p-phenylene 4-octyloxybenzoates, 4-alkoxybenzoate and 4-n-alkylbenzoate (4). Although all the derivatives exhibit smectic A and/or C phases having a monolayer arrangement of the molecules, the layer spacings are considerably affected by alternation of the ester linkages. The layer spacings for the homologues of 1 are a little shorter than the calculated molecular lengths, while those for 2 agree with the calculated molecular lengths. The layer spacings for 3 show a notable even-odd alternation in the higher homologues. The results are discussed in terms of a subtle change in the molecular structures due to replacement of the ester groups.  相似文献

We have synthesized a new series of polyphenylene compounds with a pyridine ring, 2-(4-n-alkoxyphenyl)-5-methylpyridines (CH3C5H3NC6H4OCiH2i1) (1a-i; the carbon number, i, of the alkoxy group is 1-9), and studied their phase transitions and mesogenicity using DSC and polarizing microscopy. In the homologous series of 1a-i, no mesomorphic phase appeared for i=1-5 and only a monotropic nematic phase was observed for i=6-9. The mesomorphic potential is relatively weaker for the 1a-i than for the 2a-i and 3a-i homologues, which are pyridine-containing three- and four-ring similar systems. This lowering of the mesogenicity may be due to the lack of a phenyl ring between the pyridine ring and the methyl group in the 1a-i homologues.  相似文献

The thermal properties of 4-cyanophenyl 4-(4-alkyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoates having a lateral substituent have been examined. Commencing with the nonyloxy homologue the hydrogen derivative shows a smectic A phase having a partially bilayered arrangement (SAAd). When the substituents are introduced at position X, the SAd phase commences from the octyloxy homologue, and the chlorine and bromine derivatives show an additional SAd phase in the low temperature region. When the substituents are introduced at position Y, the SAd phase commences either from the undecyloxy or the dodecyloxy homologue, and the nitro derivative shows two tilted phases in the low temperature region. Compounds having a methoxy group at position Z have difficulty in forming the SAd phase. The effect of the substituent on the thermal properties of the smectic phases has been discussed in terms of the electrostatic and structural properties of the substituents. A driving force for the formation of the partially bilayered arrangement is also discussed.  相似文献

New liquid crystal compounds, (+)-4-[5-(2-methylbutyl)-1,3-dioxan-2-yl] phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoates (5), were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviour of these compounds is compared with that of (+)-4-(5-alkyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)-phenyl 4-(2-methylbutoxy)benzoates (6). While compounds 6 exhibited a chiral smectic C phase, the corresponding compounds 5 did not. This might mean that for the appearance of a chiral smectic C phase in these types of compounds, it is necessary that the carbonyl and the chiral groups exist at nearby positions. Transition temperatures to those isotropic state for compounds 5 were lower than those for compounds 6. This result is common in both cases of (+)-4-alkoxycarbonylphenyl-4-[5-(2-methylbutyl)-1,3-dioxan-2-yl]benzoates (7), and (+)-4-(2-methylbutoxy-carbonyl)phenyl 4-(5-alkyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)-benzoates (8).  相似文献

A new series of aromatic esters, 1 and 2 with a sulphur atom in one of the side chains, is described. They exhibit nematic and/or smectic A/C mesophases as a function of the length of the alkyloxy chain. The presence of sulphur in the 4-position of the alkanoyloxy chain depresses both the clearing and the melting points with respect to the corresponding carbon analogues 3, resulting from the higher conformational mobility of the thiaalkyl chain. In 2, the presence of a methyl group in the 2-position of the alkanoyloxy chain induces a SA phase below room temperature.  相似文献

X-ray diffraction results are reported for two bromo substituted side chain liquid crystal polymers with polysiloxane backbones. Both exhibit a smectic A phase with the observed lamellar d spacings being consistent with an almost totally overlapped interdigitated structure. Below the SA phase the biphenyl derivative gives an X-ray pattern with sharp 1, 10, and 210 reflections which can be interpreted as smectic E.  相似文献

As part of our detailed comparative studies of groups of liquid-crystalline compounds that belong to a homologous series, we present phase-transition studies of the compounds N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-pentylaniline (5O.5) and N-(4-n-nonyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-butylaniline (9O.4) using different experimental techniques. The compound 5O.5 is reported to exhibit a phase sequence N, SA, SC, SB and SG, while 90.4 shows the sequence SA, SF and SG. The salient features of our work on 5O.5 are (i) a new smectic F phase is found in place of the reported smectic B phase, which is confirmed by both miscibility and X-ray studies; (ii) the formation of smectic-C-like short-range order in the nematic phase well above the SA-N transition; and (iii) a large tilt-angle variation in the smectic C phase (0-23·5°C) in a small temperature range (4·1°C). The phase changes across the SA-I transition, and for the first time across SF-SA transition, are carried out by volumetric studies. The detailed inferences of these are also presented.  相似文献

Two alkyl (1b and 1c) and four fluoroalkyl derivatives (1d-1f) of 4-arylbutyric acid (1c, 1d and 1e) and 4-arylbutanol (1b, 1f and 1g) [aryl = 2',3'-difluoro-4'-(2-(E-4-pentylcyclohexyl)ethyl)-biphenyl-1-yl] were prepared and investigated in the pure form as nematic materials (1b and 1c) and as additives to a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) host (1d-1f). A comparison of 1b and 1c with the decyl analogue 1a demonstrates the effect of terminal chain modification on thermal and electro-optical properties. The substitution of the -CH2O- (1b) or -COO- (1c) for -CH2CH2- in 1a destabilized the N and SmA phases or completely eliminated the smectic behaviour (1c). Dielectric analysis revealed that the chain modification increased the negative Δε, reduced elastic constant K 11 and moderately decreased rotational viscosity γ1. The temperature dependence of the key electro-optical parameters was analysed for ester 2, the methyl analogue of 1c, which exhibits a 45 K wide N phase. All four fluoroalkyl derivatives 1d-1f showed enantiotropic SmA phases and 1e also exhibited a monotropic SmC phase. Solutions of 1d-1f in a FLC host (0.2 mmol g-1) increased the tilt angle Θ (up to 45° for 1g), reduced rotational viscosity γ1 and the risetime τ. The most dramatic changes were observed for 1g, which contains 15 fluorine atoms.  相似文献

Despite the prevalence of organised 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene derivatives in molecular electronics, the interest in the photophysics of these systems and the common occurrence of phenylethynyl moeties in molecules that exhibit liquid crystalline phases, the phase behaviour of simple alkoxy-substituted 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene derivatives has not yet been described. Two series of 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene derivatives, i.e. 1-[(4'-alkoxy)phenylethynyl]-4-(phenylethynyl)benzenes (5a-5f) and methyl 4-[(4'-alkoxy)phenylethynyl-4'-(phenylethynyl)] benzoates (18a-18f) [alkoxy = n-C4H9 (a), n-C6H13 (b), n-C9H19 (c), n-C12H25 (d), n-C14H29 (e), n-C16H33 (f)] have been prepared and characterised. Both series have good chemical stability at temperatures up to 210°C, the derivatives featuring the methyl ester head-group (18a-18f) offering rather higher melting points and generally stabilising a more diverse range of mesophases at higher temperatures than those found for the simpler compounds (5a-5f). Smectic phases are stabilised by the longer alkoxy substituents, whereas for short and intermediate chain lengths of the simpler system (5a-5c) nematic phases dominate. Diffraction analysis was used to identify the SmBhex phase in (5d-5f) that is stable within a temperature range of approximately 120-140°C. The relationships between the organisation of molecules within these moderate temperature liquid crystalline phases and other self-organised states (e.g. Langmuir-Blodgett films) remain to be explored.  相似文献

New homologous series of N-[4-(4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-2-hydroxybenzylidene]hydroxyanilines were synthesized. All 4-hydroxyaniline derivatives exhibited a nematic phase, while 3-hydroxyaniline and 2-hydroxyaniline derivatives exhibited only a nematic phase as the terminal alkoxy group was lengthened. Infrared spectra suggest that the 4-hydroxyaniline derivatives form intermolecular hydrogen bonding of the single bridge type, while the 3-hydroxy and 2-hydroxy derivatives form the polymer type. The Raman band at around 1360 cm-1 exhibited large differences in intensity among these derivatives. This can be explained by the effect of intermolecular or hydrogen bonding molecular conformation.  相似文献

Dielectric relaxation measurements of 5 mole % 4-n-hexyloxycyanobenzene (I) dissolved in 4-n-pentyloxyphenyl-trans-4-n-octylcyclohexylcarboxylate (II) were carried out from 1 kHz to 10 MHz in the nematic, smectic A and smectic B phases. The relaxation frequency of I parallel to the director is about 05 MHz in the SBphase and increases rapidly at the transition from SB to SA.  相似文献

Polycatenar saturated macrocycles 1,10-bis[3,4,5-tris(4-dodecyloxy)benzoy1]-1,10-diaza-4,7,13,16-tetrathiacyclo-octadecane (3b) and 1,10-bis[3,4-bis(4-dodecyloxy)benzoy1] -1,10-diaza-4,7,13,16-tetrathiacyclo-octadecane (3d) reacted with [Pd(MeCN)4][BF4]2 led to the cationic complexes [4b][BF4]2 and [4d][BF4]2, respectively. Complexes [4b][BF4]2 and [4d][BF4]2 showed smectic mesomorphism on heating as confirmed by small angle X-ray diffraction. A concurrent, irreversible structural change of the complex cations was observed and a tentative explanation is suggested.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of new Schiff 's bases (series 3a-f) and azo compounds (4a-f) incorporating pyridine and 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings are reported. The first homologues in the series of Schiff's bases (3a-c) show a monotropic mesophase and the homologues 3d-f display an enantiotropic SmA phase. The only azo compounds to exhibit liquid crystalline properties are the homologues 4e, f which show a monotropic nematic phase. These series are compared with Schiff's bases and azo compounds analogues (series 5 and 6), previously reported by us and an AM1 study of the structure/mesomorphic property relationship is described.  相似文献

We present a homologeous series of liquid crystalline trioxadecalin compounds having a terminal alkoxy chain and a nitro group. The (1S, 3R, 6R,8R)-3-(4'-nitrophenyl)-8-(4'-octoxyphenyl)-2,4, 7-trioxabicyclo [4.4.0]decane 2 c shows a temperature-dependent inversion of the cholesteric helix at lower temperatures. For higher temperatures, the reciprocal helical pitch reaches a minimum, then it increases, tending to a second inversion point just above the clearing point. An additional chiral centre in the side chain leads for nitro compounds 3 to non-mesomorphic behaviour. For the cyano compounds 4, the change in the cholesteric helix is suppressed, for the R configuration, but for the S configuration helical inversion occurs at high temperatures and selective reflection above the transition to the TGBA phase.  相似文献

A series of 2-(4-n-alkylphenyl)indenes (3) with different alkyl substituents (CH3 to C10H21) were synthesized and systematically characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction compared with 2-phenylindene (3a). Depending on the alkyl chain length, highly ordered crystal-smectic E mesophases were observed and confirmed by X-ray diffraction for the derivatives 3h-3k with heptyl to decyl chains (n = 6-9). For 3f with a pentyl side chain (n = 4), an X-ray crystal structure analysis was carried out.  相似文献
