Spectral analysis of transport equations with bounce‐back boundary conditions

We investigate the spectral properties of the time‐dependent linear transport equation with bounce‐back boundary conditions. A fine analysis of the spectrum of the streaming operator is given and the explicit expression of the strongly continuous streaming semigroup is derived. Next, making use of a recent result from Sbihi (J. Evol. Equations 2007; 7 :689–711), we prove, via a compactness argument, that the essential spectrum of the transport semigroup and that of the streaming semigroup coincide on all L^p‐spaces with 1<p<∞. Application to the linear Boltzmann equation for granular gases is provided. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Nonnegative solutions to an elliptic problem with nonlinear absorption and a nonlinear incoming flux on the boundary

In this paper we perform an extensive study of the existence, uniqueness (or multiplicity) and stability of nonnegative solutions to the semilinear elliptic equation − Δu = λ u − u ^p in Ω, with the nonlinear boundary condition ∂u/∂ν = u ^r on ∂Ω. Here Ω is a smooth bounded domain of with outward unit normal ν, λ is a real parameter and p, r > 0. We also give the precise behavior of solutions for large |λ| in the cases where they exist. The proofs are mainly based on bifurcation techniques, sub-supersolutions and variational methods.      

Spectral analysis of Brownian motion with jump boundary

Consider a family of probability measures, indexed by , on a bounded open region with a smooth boundary. For any starting point inside , we run a standard -dimensional Brownian motion in until it first exits , at which time it jumps to a point inside the domain according to the jump measure at the exit point and starts a new Brownian motion. The same evolution is repeated independently each time the process reaches the boundary. We study the exponential rate at which the transition distribution of the process converges to its invariant measure, in terms of the spectral gap of the generator. In particular, we prove two conjectures of I. Ben-Ari and R. Pinsky for an interval (see J. Funct. Anal. 251 (2007), 122-140, and preprint (2007)) by studying when a combination of the sine and cosine transforms of probability measures on an interval has only real zeros.

     

Nonlinear elliptic problem involving non-local boundary conditions and variable exponent

We study a nonlinear elliptic problem with non-local boundary conditions and variable exponent. We prove an existence and uniqueness result of weak solution to this problem with general maximal monotone graphs.

Spectral analysis of eigenparameter dependent boundary value transmission problems

In this paper, the singular second order differential operators are considered defined on the multi-interval. Some boundary and transmission conditions are imposed on the maximal domain functions with the spectral parameter. After constructing the differential operators associated with the boundary value transmission problems on the suitable Hilbert spaces, it is proved that these operators are the maximal dissipative operators. Finally constructing the model operators which are established with the help of the scattering functions, it is proved that all root vectors of the maximal dissipative operators are complete in the Hilbert spaces.     

Self-similar solutions of the porous medium equation in a half-space with a nonlinear boundary condition: existence and symmetry

We find existence of a nonnegative compactly supported solution of the problem Δu=u^α in , ∂u/∂ν=u on . Moreover, we prove that every nonnegative solution with finite energy is compactly supported and radially symmetric in the tangential variables.     

Stability of difference schemes for two-dimensional parabolic equations with non-local boundary conditions

The stability of difference schemes for one-dimensional and two-dimensional parabolic equations, subject to non-local (Bitsadze-Samarskii type) boundary conditions is dealt with. To analyze the stability of difference schemes, the structure of the spectrum of the matrix that defines the linear system of difference equations for a respective stationary problem is studied. Depending on the values of parameters in non-local conditions, this matrix can have one zero, one negative or complex eigenvalues. The stepwise stability is proved and the domain of stability of difference schemes is found.     

Determination of Dirac operator with eigenvalue-dependent boundary and jump conditions

Dirac operator with eigenvalue-dependent boundary and jump conditions is studied. Uniqueness theorems of the inverse problems from either Weyl function or the spectral data (the sets of eigenvalues and norming constants except for one eigenvalue and corresponding norming constant; two sets of different eigenvalues except for two eigenvalues) are proved. Finally, we investigate two applications of these theorems and obtain analogues of a theorem of Hochstadt-Lieberman and a theorem of Mochizuki-Trooshin.     

Elliptic equations with nonzero boundary conditions in weighted Sobolev spaces

We present weighted Sobolev spaces along with a trace theorem and an interpolation theorem for the spaces. Then we solve nonzero boundary value problems for elliptic equations in .     

Spectral method for vorticity‐stream function form of Navier–Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions

In this paper, we propose a spectral method for the vorticity‐stream function form of the Navier–Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions. The numerical solutions fulfill the incompressibility and the physical boundary conditions automatically. The stability and convergence of the proposed methods are proven. Spectral triples and manifolds with boundary

We investigate manifolds with boundary in noncommutative geometry. Spectral triples associated to a symmetric differential operator and a local boundary condition are constructed. We show that there is no tadpole for classical Dirac operators with a chiral boundary condition on spin manifolds.     

A quasilinearization method for elliptic problems with a nonlinear boundary condition

We study a nonlinear elliptic second order problem with a nonlinear boundary condition. Assuming the existence of an ordered couple of a supersolution and a subsolution, we develop a quasilinearization method in order to construct an iterative scheme that converges to a solution. Furthermore, under an extra assumption we prove that the convergence is quadratic.     

Spectral gap for the Kac model with hard sphere collisions

We prove the analog of the Kac conjecture for hard sphere collisions, giving a computable, close estimate on the spectral gap that is independent of the number of particles. Previous work has focused on the case in which the collision rates are independent of the particle velocities, the case of so-called Maxwellian molecules. The new methods introduced here allow us to deal with collision rates that are not bounded from below. We also obtain information on the structure of the gap eigenfunction.

Matrix representations of fourth-order boundary value problems with coupled or mixed boundary conditions

An equivalence between a class of regular self-adjoint fourth-order boundary value problems with coupled or mixed boundary conditions and a certain class of matrix problems is investigated. Such an equivalence was previously known only in the second-order case and fourth-order case with separated boundary conditions.
