Quantum Uncertainty and the Spectra of Symmetric Operators

In certain circumstances, the uncertainty, ΔS[φ], of a quantum observable, S, can be bounded from below by a finite overall constant ΔS>0, i.e., ΔS[φ]≥ΔS, for all physical states φ. For example, a finite lower bound to the resolution of distances has been used to model a natural ultraviolet cutoff at the Planck or string scale. In general, the minimum uncertainty of an observable can depend on the expectation value, t=〈φ,S φ〉, through a function ΔS t of t, i.e., ΔS[φ]≥ΔS t , for all physical states φ with 〈φ,S φ〉=t. An observable whose uncertainty is finitely bounded from below is necessarily described by an operator that is merely symmetric rather than self-adjoint on the physical domain. Nevertheless, on larger domains, the operator possesses a family of self-adjoint extensions. Here, we prove results on the relationship between the spacing of the eigenvalues of these self-adjoint extensions and the function ΔS t . A semiregular operator on a Hilbert -module, or equivalently, on the -algebra of `compact' operators on it, is a closable densely defined operator whose adjoint is also densely defined. It is shown that for operators on extensions of compacts by unital or abelian -algebras, semiregularity leads to regularity. Two examples coming from quantum groups are discussed.

In his classic book on symmetric functions, Macdonald describes a remarkable result by Green relating the character theory of the finite general linear group to transition matrices between bases of symmetric functions. This connection allows one to analyze the character theory of the general linear group via symmetric group combinatorics. Using works of Ennola, Kawanaka, Lusztig and Srinivasan, this paper describes the analogous setting for the finite unitary group. In particular, we explain the connection between Deligne–Lusztig theory and Ennola's efforts to generalize Green's work, and from this we deduce various character theoretic results. Applications include calculating certain sums of character degrees, and giving a model of Deligne–Lusztig type for the finite unitary group, which parallels results of Klyachko and Inglis and Saxl for the finite general linear group.  相似文献

The spectral problem for self-adjoint extensions is studied using the machinery of boundary triplets. For a class of symmetric operators having Weyl functions of a special type we calculate explicitly the spectral projections in the form of operator-valued integrals. This allows one to give a constructive proof of the fact that, in certain intervals, the resulting self-adjoint extensions are unitarily equivalent to the parameterizing boundary operator acting in a smaller space, and one is able to provide an explicit form for the associated unitary transform. Applications to differential operators on metric graphs and to direct sums are discussed.  相似文献

We consider a large class of self-adjoint elliptic problems associated with the second derivative acting on a space of vector-valued functions. We present and survey several results that can be obtained by means of two different approaches to the study of the associated eigenvalues problems. The first, more general one allows to replace a secular equation (which is well known in some special cases) by an abstract rank condition. The second one, though available in general, seems to apply particularly well to a specific boundary condition, the sometimes dubbed anti-Kirchhoff condition in the literature, that arises in the theory of differential operators on graphs; it also permits to discuss interesting and more direct connections between the spectrum of the differential operator and some graph theoretical quantities, in particular some results on the symmetry of the spectrum in either case.  相似文献
