Soft laser photo-ionization mass spectrometry is presented as a separation dimension hyphenated with gas chromatographic techniques. Single photon ionization (SPI) is a universal soft ionization method which ionizes organic molecules with an ionization potential below 10.5 eV if 118 nm laser radiation is used. The inherently soft ionization of photo ionization techniques can further be utilized together with gas chromatography as a comprehensive two-dimensional separation method (GC x MS), using the GC retention time as first separation dimension and the molecular mass as second separation dimension. Some GC x MS chromatograms of diesel petroleum samples using SPI are presented and discussed. Finally, it is demonstrated that the coupling of soft SPI mass spectrometry with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC) provides a three-dimensional separation technique (GC x GC x SPI-MS).  相似文献

One- and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography were hyphenated with soft photoionization mass spectrometry. The characteristics of these two- and three-dimensional comprehensive separation techniques are discussed in detail. Using the innovative electron beam pumped excimer light source (EBEL) for single-photon ionization (SPI), organic molecules with ionization energies (E i ) of below 9.8 eV can be detected by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). SPI with 126 nm vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons enables the universal and soft ionization of organic molecules. SPI-TOF-MS hyphenated to one-dimensional gas chromatography results in a comprehensive two-dimensional separation method (GC×MS). To demonstrate this, diesel fuel was analyzed, and the resulting GC×MS chromatograms are discussed in depth. A three-dimensional separation method was also realized by combining comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) with SPI-MS. In the resulting separation space, constituents originating from mineral oil diesel blended with biodiesel were dispersed along the two GC separation axes, while the molecular mass axis served as a third separation dimension.  相似文献

A variety of crude oil samples have been investigated by the combined methods of thermal analysis and mass spectrometry by means of a newly developed prototype of a thermogravimetry—single photon ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupling (TG-SPI-TOFMS). Single photon ionisation (SPI) was conducted utilising a novel electron beam pumped argon excimer lamp (EBEL) as photon source, and a TOFMS with orthogonal acceleration has been applied for the detection of the mass to charge signals. The advantage of the soft SPI technique over EI for the analysis of such complex samples could be clearly demonstrated, as the aliphatic hydrocarbons present in crude oil may be detected via their respective molecular ion signals, not showing the intense fragmentation typical for EI spectra of this substance class. The application of SPI revealed furthermore two distinct decomposition regions, dominated by evaporation and pyrolysis processes, respectively. Moreover, different crude oils could be distinguished by TA/SPI mass spectra due to their unique molecular signatures.  相似文献

A commercial thermogravimetry—supersonic jet-skimmer quadrupole mass spectrometer system (TG-Skimmer-QMS, Netzsch GmbH, Germany) was successfully converted for soft single photon ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometric (SPI-TOFMS) detection of organic compounds. VUV light for SPI was generated by an electron beam pumped argon excimer light source (EBEL; E photon = 9.8 eV). Furthermore, the versatility of the system was conserved, as high temperature TG and DSC measurements as well as electron ionisation mass spectrometry for the detection of inorganic compounds are still possible. The new system was tested with two polymers and a hydrocarbon mixture (diesel). It was demonstrated that aliphatic and aromatic organic compounds can be detected without fragmentation. Thus the system allows the recording of a readily interpretable organic signature of, e.g. thermal polymer decomposition. The thermal degradation of polystyrene shows a rich signature of the monomer, some oligomers and minor products of irregular cleavings of carbon chains. Polycarbonate exhibits a thermal decomposition fingerprint which is dominated by products of bisphenol A. The bisphenol A monomer, however, is also detectable.  相似文献

Mass spectrometry (MS) with soft ionisation techniques (i.e. ionisation without fragmentation of the analyte molecules) for gaseous samples exhibits interesting analytical properties for direct analysis applications (i.e. direct inlet mass spectrometric on-line monitoring) as well as mass spectrometric detection method for gas chromatography (GC-MS). Commonly either chemical ionisation (CI) or field ionisation (FI) is applied as soft ionisation technology for GC-MS. An interesting alternative to the CI and FI technologies methods are photo-ionisation (PI) methods. PI overcomes some of the limitations of CI and FI and furthermore add some unique analytical properties. The resonance enhanced multi-photon ionisation (REMPI) method uses intense UV-laser pulses (wavelength range approximately 350-193 nm) for highly selective, sensitive and soft ionisation of predominately aromatic compounds. The single photon ionisation (SPI) method utilises VUV light (from lamps or laser sources, wavelengths range approximately 150-110 nm) can be used for a universal soft ionisation of organic molecules. In this article the historical development as well as the current status and concepts of gas chromatography hyphenated to photo-ionisation mass spectrometry are reviewed.  相似文献

The combined analytical methods of thermal analysis and mass spectrometry have been applied in form of a newly developed prototype of a thermogravimetry — single photon ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupling (TG-SPI-TOFMS) to investigate the molecular patterns of evolved gases from several biomass samples as well as a crude oil sample. Single photon ionization (SPI) was conducted by means of a novel electron beam pumped argon excimer lamp (EBEL) as photon source. With SPI-TOFMS various lignin decomposition products such as guaiacol, syringol and coniferyl alcohol could be monitored. Furthermore, SPI allows the detection of aliphatic hydrocarbons, mainly alkenes, carbonylic compounds such as acetone, and furan derivatives such as furfuryl alcohol and hydroxymethylfurfural. More alkaline biomass such as coarse colza meal show intense signals from nitrogen containing substances such as (iso-)propylamine and pyrrole. Thermal degradation of crude oil takes place in two steps, evaporation of volatile components and pyrolysis of larger molecular structures at higher temperatures. Due to the soft ionisation, homologue rows of alkanes and alkenes could be detected on basis of their molecular ions. The obtained information from the thermal analysis/photo ionisation mass spectrometry experiments can be drawn on in comparison to the investigation of the primary products from flash pyrolysis of biomass for production of biofuels and chemicals.  相似文献

We present a newly designed soft plasma ionization (SPI) source developed for mass spectrometric study of organic compounds in this study. The SPI cell having a relatively small size consists of a hollow anode and a hollow mesh cathode. The voltage–current characteristic depending on the pressure was investigated, indicating that it has similar characteristics to conventional hollow cathode glow discharges. To investigate the emission characteristics of the SPI source, some molecular band emission spectra (N2, N2+ and OH+) were measured by using argon and helium discharge gases. The SPI source was installed to a commercially used quadrupole mass analyzer for analyzing organic compounds. To demonstrate the SPI source, the mass spectra of some organic compounds (methylene chloride, toluene, benzene, cyclohexane and chloroform) were measured. The organic compounds were ionized with good stability in the plasma, and the fragmentation depended on the applied current. When helium and argon gases were used as the discharge gas, the helium plasma was more suitable for SPI-MS rather than argon because the argon plasma not only suffers from spectral interference but also has lower sensitivity.  相似文献

Summary Prediction of the thermal decomposition pathway of the metal complexes is very important from the theoretical and experimental point of view to determine the properties and structural differences of complexes. In the prediction of the decomposition pathways of complexes, besides the thermal analysis techniques, some ancillary techniques e.g. mass spectroscopy is also used in recent years. In the light of the molecular structures and fragmentation components, it is believed that the thermal decomposition pathway of most molecules is similar to the ionisation mechanism occurring in the mass spectrometer ionisation process. In this study, the thermal decomposition pathway of [Ni(dmen)2(H2O)2](acs)2 complex have been predicted by the help of thermal analysis data (TG, DTG and DTA) and mass spectroscopic fragmentation pattern. The complex was decomposed in four stages: a) dehydration between 84-132°C, b) loss of N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine (dmen) ligand, c) decomposition of remained dmen and acesulfamato (acs) by releasing SO2, d) burning of the organic residue to resulting in NiO. The volatile products observed in the thermal decomposition process were also observed in the mass spectrometer ionisation process except molecular peak and it was concluded that the ionisation and thermal decomposition pathway of the complex resembles each other.  相似文献

Pyrolysis single-photon ionisation (SPI)–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) and statistical analysis techniques have been applied to differentiate three major tobacco types, Burley, Virginia and Oriental, by means of the gas phase. SPI is known as a soft ionisation technique that allows fast and comprehensive on-line monitoring of a large variety of aliphatic and aromatic substances without fragmentation of the molecule ions. The tobacco samples were pyrolysed at 800°C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting pyrolysis gas contained signals from more than 70 masses between m/z 5 and 170. Mass spectra obtained were analysed by principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to distinguish between different tobacco types. Prior variable reduction of the data set was carried out by calculation of the Fisher ratios. Results achieved give information about chemical composition and characteristics of the smoke derived from each tobacco type and enable conclusions on plant cultivation to be drawn. Based on LDA, a model for tobacco type recognition of unknown samples was established, which was cross-checked by additional measurements of each tobacco type. Furthermore, first results on the recognition of tobacco mixtures based on principal component regression (PCR) are presented.  相似文献

A new system combining a soft plasma ionization (SPI) source with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) has been successfully developed and applied to direct and on-line analysis of nanoparticles in smoke generated during combustion of mosquito coils with no sample preparation. The mass spectra of nanoparticles in smoke were examined in conjunction with the effects of species, pressure and current of the SPI discharge on fragmentation. The results indicated that a maximum mass of m/z 1576 was detectable when the following optima SPI conditions were satisfied: a He gas pressure of 1000 Pa with an air pressure of 1600 Pa and a discharge current of 110 mA. Furthermore, considering the results for emission spectra we suppose an ionization mechanism of SPI in which excitation and ionization of nitrogen molecule is promoted by the presence of He gas, leading to promote the smoke sample ionization. The mass spectrum of nanoparticles showed specific patterns of a peak interval of 74 which were assigned to triacetylene (1,3,5-hexatriyne). The most abundant peak in the mass spectrum, at m/z 452, was assigned to triacontanoic acid.  相似文献

Thermal processes are part of many industrial treatments; therefore, it is of great interest to gain more insight of these processes. Evolved gas analysis (EGA) is the most straightforward way to make chemical reactions in thermal processes accessible for on-line investigations. The sample matrix of evolved off gas e.g., from coffee roasting is a permanently changing and complex mixture of a multitude of substances that have to be analyzed simultaneously for real on-line investigations without any sample trapping or separation device. Therefore, a measurement system as an ion trap mass spectrometer (ITMS) with soft ionization is required with its tandem mass spectrometry capability to provide distinct substance identification unperturbed by the remaining matrix. The presented novel system setup is based on a thermogravimetric device (TG) to simulate the thermal treatment as in industrial processes combined with an ITMS with soft single photon ionization (SPI) to achieve the required substance information. Hence it is possible to gain single mass spectrometric information of expected substances for process control. More comprehensive than that are the two-dimensional MS data which are required for research and process development purposes though. The conducted analyses show that this novel setup is able to provide distinct substance identification in evolved gas of roast and ground coffee powder. To our knowledge, this is the first TG–SPI–ITMS setup with successful application in verifying the identity of different mass traces within a single run.  相似文献

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation may be employed to perform single-photoionization (SPI) mass spectrometry (MS). Advantages of the use of VUV include its application to all compounds with ionization potentials below 10.5 eV, its inability to ionize background gases, and minimal ion fragmentation compared to most other ionization methods. This paper is a review of the use of VUV for SPI-MS in analytical chemistry. Theoretical aspects of the production of VUV are discussed, along with experimental arrangements. Practical hints on the construction and production of VUV light are also included. Some examples of SPI mass spectra are presented, along with a summary of applications of this technique.  相似文献

Electrospray ionization (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), and atmospheric pressure photo-ionization (APPI) are the most important techniques for the ionization of liquid samples. However, working under atmospheric pressure conditions, all these techniques involve some chemical rather than purely physical processes, and therefore, side reactions often yield to matrix-dependent ionization efficiencies. Here, a system is presented that combines both soft single-photon ionization (SPI) and hard 70 eV electron impact ionization (EI) of dissolved compounds under vacuum conditions. A quadrupole mass spectrometer was modified to enable direct EI, a technique developed by Cappiello et al. to obtain library-searchable EI mass spectra as well as soft SPI mass spectra of sample solutions. An electron beam-pumped rare gas excimer lamp working at 126 nm was used as well as a focusable vacuum UV light source for single-photon ionization. Both techniques, EI and SPI, were applied successfully for flow injection experiments providing library-matchable EI fragment mass spectra and soft SPI mass spectra, showing dominant signals for the molecular ion. Four model compounds were analyzed: hexadecane, propofol, chlorpropham, and eugenol, with detection limits in the picomolar range. This novel combination of EI and SPI promises great analytical benefits, thanks to the possibility of combining database alignment for EI data and molecular mass information provided by SPI. Possible applications for the presented ionization technology system are a matrix-effect-free detection and a rapid screening of different complex mixtures without time-consuming sample preparation or separation techniques (e.g., for analysis of reaction solutions in combinatorial chemistry) or a switchable hard (EI) and soft (SPI) MS method as detection step for liquid chromatography.

Synthesis and molecular structure of air stable, low-melting dimethylgold(III) complex with dithiophosphinate (CH3)2AuS2PiBu2 (iBu=CH2CH(CH3)2), its thermal properties, and the features as precursor for the metal–organic chemical vapor deposition of gold films are reported. Thermal behavior of the compound in the condensed and gas phase was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry. Pathways of heterogeneous thermolysis of the compound to elemental gold are discussed. It was found that α-P–H elimination followed by coupling of two alkenyl groups from the coordinated ligand is one of the main thermolysis pathways in condensed and gas phase.  相似文献

This paper provides analytical chemical information on selected new molecular entities (NMEs) which are drugs that have recently been approved by the FDA. These are the antiretroviral drugs, atazanavir, indinavir and emtricitabine, the antibacterial gemifloxacin, rosuvastatine which is a cholesterol-lowing drug, the anti-cancer drug gefitinib and aprepitant for neurological disorders. Electrospray ionisation-quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn) was employed to generate tandem mass spectrometric (MS2) data of the drugs studied and structural assignments of product ions were supported by quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (QToF-MS/MS). These fragmentation studies were then utilised in the development and validation of a specific and sensitive liquid chromatographic method (LC–ESI-MS2) to identify and determine these drugs at therapeutic concentration levels in serum after a single protein precipitation procedure with acetonitrile. In addition, this method was compared to the application of gas liquid chromatography-flame ionisation detection (GLC-FID) and differential pulse polarography (DPP) for the analysis of these NMEs in serum.  相似文献

In this study, the agronomical and chemical characterisation of 13 Sicilian biotypes of Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav., grown under the same agricultural and environmental condition, are reported. The main morpho-productive parameters and quali-quantitative profile of essential oils (EOs) were determined. The EOs were analysed by gas chromatography-flame ionisation detector and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis statistical methods were used to group biotypes according to the EOs chemical composition. The EO yield ranged between 4.6 and 8.1 (v/w). A total of 38 EO compounds have been identified. The compounds mostly represented were α-pinene, myrcene, α-terpinene, p-cymene, γ-terpinene, borneol, carvacrol and β-caryophyllene. In all biotypes, the carvacrol (67.4–79.5%) was the main compound, confirming that T. capitata is a carvacrol chemotype. The results showed that all Sicilian Thymbra biotypes have a good adaptation to the climatic conditions of the test environment.  相似文献

The essential oil constituents of the leaves of Jasminum subtriplinerve (Oleaceae) and Vitex quinata (Verbanaceae) cultivated in Vietnam were analysed by gas chromatography – flame ionisation detector (GC–FID) and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC–MS) techniques. The main constituents identified in J. subtriplinerve were mainly oxygenated monoterpenes represented by linalool (44.2%), α-terpineol (15.5%), geraniol (19.4%) and cis-linalool oxide (8.8%). The quantitative significant components of V. quinata were terpene hydrocarbons comprising of β-pinene (30.1%), β-caryophyllene (26.9%) and β-elemene (7.4%). The chemical compositions of the essential oils are being reported for the first time.  相似文献

In the present study, different silica gel modifications were evaluated for their application as target surface for material enhanced laser desorption/ionisation mass spectrometric (MELDI-MS) investigation of amino acids. 4,4′-Azodianiline (ADA-silica) modified silica gel was successfully employed for the qualitative analysis of amino acids in positive- and in negative-ion mode. Further no derivatisation of amino acids was necessary, as the introduced system allowed the direct analysis of targets and delivered spectra with excellent signal intensity and signal-to-noise ratio within a few minutes. The influence of surface chemistry, ionisation mode and the nature of analytes on signal intensity was studied and discussed. Detection limit of 2.10 pg (10 fmol) was achieved by employing ADA-silica in positive-ion mode. Finally, xylem saps from different types of trees were analysed. This proved the high performance and excellent behaviour of the introduced target surface material.  相似文献

The assignment of the (C, H) couplings in N-acetylimidazole and the determination of the relative signs of all (C, H) and (H, H) couplings with SPI experiments are described. All coupling constants are of the same, positive, sign as the directly-bonded (C, H) coupling constants. Some advantageous features of the SPI technique, such as selectivity and increased sensitivity, are discussed in comparison to conventional double irradiation methods.  相似文献

Time of flight mass spectrometry, electron‐ion coincidence, and ion yield spectroscopy were employed to investigate for the first time the thiazole (C3H3NS) molecule in the gas phase excited by synchrotron radiation in the soft X‐ray domain. Total ion yield (TIY) and photoelectron‐photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectra were recorded as a function of the photon energy in the vicinity of the carbon K edge (C1s). The C1s resonant transitions as well as the core ionization thresholds have been determined from the profile of TIY spectrum, and the features were discussed. The corresponding partial ion yields were determined from the PEPICO spectra for the cation species produced upon the molecular photodissociation. Additional ab initio calculations have also been performed from where relevant structural and electronic configuration parameters were obtained for this molecule.  相似文献
