We report a simple strategy for the grafting of poly(methacrylic acid) [poly(MAA)] brushes from silicon substrate by surface‐initiated RAFT polymerization and the subsequent coupling of BODIPY to these brushes to render them fluorescent. The poly(MAA) brushes were first generated by functionalization of hydrogen‐terminated silicon substrate with methyl‐10‐undecenoate which both leads to the formation of an organic layer covalently linked to the surface via Si? C bonds without detectable reaction of the carboxylate groups and couples to the polymerization initiator, followed by surface‐initiated RAFT polymerization of tert‐butyl methacrylate from these substrate‐bound initiator centers, and finally conversion of tert‐butyl groups to carboxylic acid groups. The poly(MAA) brushes were then made fluorescent by grafting a BODIPY derivative via an ester linkage. The stability of the BODIPY‐based fluorescent polymer brushes in buffer solutions at pH 6.0 to 12.0 with added salt was investigated by ellipsometry, fluorescence microscopy, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of these measurements indicated that the organic molecule‐initiator bond (ester linkage) is unstable and can be hydrolyzed resulting in detaching of the immobilized polymer from the silicon substrate. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel types of dual‐functional surface‐attached polymer brushes were developed by interface‐mediated reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 6‐azidohexylmethacrylate using the surface‐immobilized RAFT agent and the free initiator. The interface‐mediated RAFT polymerization produced silicon substrate coated with dual‐functional (azido groups from monomer and carboxylic acid groups from RAFT agent) poly(6‐azidohexylmethacrylate) [poly (AHMA)] with a grafting density as high as 0.59 chains/nm2. Dual‐functional polymer brushes can represent an attractive chemical platform to deliberately introduce other molecular units at specific sites. The azido groups of the poly(AHMA) brushes can be modified with alkyl groups via click reaction, known for their DNA hybridization, while the carboxylic acid end groups can be reacted with amine groups via amide reaction, known for their antifouling properties. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Zinc antimonate nanoparticles consisting of antimony and zinc oxide were surface modified in a methanol solvent medium using triethoxysilane‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating group (i.e.,) 6‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methyl) propionyloxy hexyl triethoxysilane. Successful grafting of ATRP initiator on the surface of nanoparticles was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis that shows a significant weight loss at around 250–410 °C. Grafting of ATRP initiator onto the surface was further corroborated using Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface‐initiated ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) mediated by a copper complex was carried out with the initiator‐fixed zinc antimonate nanoparticles in the presence of a sacrificial (free) initiator. The polymerization was preceded in a living manner in all examined cases; producing nanoparticles coated with well defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes with molecular weight in the range of 35–48K. Furthermore, PMMA‐grafted zinc antimonate nanoparticles were characterized using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) that exhibit significant weight loss in the temperature range of 300–410 °C confirming the formation of polymer brushes on the surface with the graft density as high as 0.26–0.27 chains/nm2. The improvement in the dispersibility of PMMA‐grafted zinc antimonate nanoparticles was verified using ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Living anionic surface‐initiated polymerization on flat gold substrates has been conducted to create uniform homopolymer and diblock copolymer brushes. A 1,1‐diphenylethylene (DPE) self‐assembled monolayer was used as the immobilized precursor initiator. n‐BuLi was used to activate the DPE in tetrahydrofuran at –78 °C to initiate the polymerization of different monomers (styrene, isoprene, ethylene oxide, and methyl methacrylate). Poly(styrene) (PS) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in particular were first investigated as grafted homopolymers, followed by their copolymers, including poly(isoprene)‐b‐poly(methylmethacrylate) (PI‐b‐PMMA). A combined approach of spectroscopic (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface plasmon spectroscopy, ellipsometry, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and microscopic (atomic force microscopy) surface analysis was used to investigate the formation of the polymer brushes in polar solvent media. The chemical nature of the outermost layer of these brushes was studied by water contact angle measurements. The effect of the experimental conditions (solvent, temperature, initiator concentration) on the surface properties of the polymer brushes was also investigated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐ and temperature‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐block?4‐vinylbenzoic acid) (poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA)) diblock copolymer brushes on silicon wafers have been successfully prepared by combining click reaction, single‐electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Azide‐terminated poly(NIPAAm) brushes were obtained by SET‐LRP followed by reaction with sodium azide. A click reaction was utilized to exchange the azide end group of a poly(NIPAAm) brushes to form a surface‐immobilized macro‐RAFT agent, which was successfully chain extended via RAFT polymerization to produce poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes. The addition of sacrificial initiator and/or chain‐transfer agent permitted the formation of well‐defined diblock copolymer brushes and free polymer chains in solution. The free polymer chains were isolated and used to estimate the molecular weights and polydispersity index of chains attached to the surface. Ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the immobilization of initiator on the silicon wafer, poly(NIPAAm) brush formation via SET‐LRP, click reaction, and poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush formation via RAFT polymerization. The poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brushes demonstrate stimuli‐responsive behavior with respect to pH and temperature. The swollen brush thickness of poly(NIPAAm‐b‐VBA) brush increases with increasing pH, and decreases with increasing temperature. These results can provide guidance for the design of smart materials based on copolymer brushes. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013, 51, 2677–2685  相似文献

We report on the synthesis of a thermosensitive polymer brush‐supported 4‐N,N‐dialkylaminopyridine catalyst and the comparison of its catalytic activity with the corresponding linear polymer‐supported version in the hydrolysis of p‐nitrophenyl acetate (NPA) as well as the effect of lower critical solution temperature (LCST) transition on catalytic activity. The polymer brushes were synthesized from initiator‐functionalized silica particles by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of methoxytri(ethylene glycol) methacrylate and 2‐(N‐methyl‐N‐(4‐pyridyl)amino)ethyl methacrylate in the presence of a free initiator. Dynamic light scattering studies showed that the onset temperatures of the LCST transition of polymer brushes in pH 7.52 and 7.82 buffers were 42 and 38 °C, respectively. Under the same reaction conditions, the net initial rate of the hydrolysis of NPA catalyzed by hairy particles was 70–80% of that catalyzed by the free copolymer at the temperature below the LCST of polymer brushes. With further increasing the temperature above the LCST, the plot of logarithm of net initial rate versus inverse temperature exhibited a shift for the reactions catalyzed by hairy particles and leveled off or decreased slightly in the case of using the free copolymer as catalyst, presumably because the structures of the aggregates of hairy particles and free copolymer chains were different. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study elucidates the influence of the atom transfer radical polymerization initiator structure, monolayer versus disordered multilayer, on the growth kinetics and the structural transition of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brush layers. The multilayer initiator film, prepared by acylation of the electrografted 2‐phenylethanol layer using 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, consists of ~4.6 times more tert‐butyl bromide groups compared to monolayer initiator prepared by self assembly technique. The results demonstrate the formation of precursor complex between CuI catalyst and the bromine initiator as a prerequisite step before the onset of polymerization. Furthermore, the PMMA brushes formed by the polymerization from the multilayered initiator layer at 50 °C are 20‐fold thicker compared to the polymerization at 25 °C due to the swelling of the multilayered initiator film. In contrast, the thickness of the PMMA layer on the monolayer initiator is less affected by the polymerization temperature. By varying the initiator density on the surface, the solvent content in the PMMA layer is shown to vary from 15% to 94%, resulting in the transition from concentrated over semidiluted to diluted brushes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new strategy toward patterned polymer brushes combining the spatially controlled deposition of poly[(hydroxymethyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) polymerization of 4‐(hydroxymethyl)[2.2]paracyclophane and surface‐initiated ring‐opening polymerization was developed. Patterns of polymer brushes with thicknesses between 53 and 538 Å were created. The approach does not require photolithographic tools and has potential applicability to a wide range of different substrates, such as glasses, polymers, metals or composites.  相似文献

The direct polymerization of deprotonated acidic monomers in aqueous solutions was achieved via surface‐confined atom transfer radical polymerization (SC‐ATRP) to produce surface‐tethered polyelectrolyte brushes. Layers of poly(itaconic acid), poly(methacrylic acid), and sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) were grown by SC‐ATRP from self‐assembled initiator monolayers of [BrC(CH3)2COO(CH2)11S]2 on gold substrates. The polymer layers were characterized with variable‐angle ellipsometry and external‐reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Without intervention, atom transfer radical polymerization catalysts were deactivated by complexation with the deprotonated acidic monomers, disproportionation, and dissociation during the polymerization of these monomers in water; the result was the cessation of polymer growth. The addition of an alkali salt to the reaction media suppressed catalyst deactivation, allowing polymer layers to increase in thickness linearly for longer periods of time with respect to salt‐free conditions. This result suggested an improved degree of polymerization control. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 566–575, 2007  相似文献

Photocontrolled surface‐initiated reversible complexation mediated polymerization (photo‐SI‐RCMP) was successfully applied to fabricate concentrated polymer brushes with complex patterning structures. Positive‐type patterned polymer brushes were obtained by photo‐SI‐RCMP under visible light (550(±50) nm) using photomasks. A particularly interesting finding was that negative‐type patterned polymer brushes were also obtainable in a facile manner. A nonspecial UV light (250–385 nm) enabled the preparation of pre‐patterned initiator surfaces in a remarkably short time (1 min), leading to negative‐type patterned polymer brushes. Based on this unique selectivity between visible and UV light, the combination of two patterning techniques enabled the preparation of complex patterned brushes, including diblock copolymers, binary polymers, and functional binary polymers, without multistep immobilization of one or more initiators on the surfaces.  相似文献

A simple method for preparing cationic poly[(ar‐vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium chloride)] [poly(VBTAC)] brushes was used by combined technology of “click chemistry” and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Initially, silicon surfaces were modified with RAFT chain transfer agent by using a click reaction involving an azide‐modified silicon wafer and alkyne‐terminated 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate (CPAD). A series of poly(VBTAC) brushes on silicon surface with different molecular weights, thicknesses, and grafting densities were then synthesized by RAFT‐mediated polymerization from the surface immobilized CPAD. The immobilization of CPAD on the silicon wafer and the subsequent polymer formation were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle measurements, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and ellipsometry analysis. The addition of free CPAD was required for the formation of well‐defined polymer brushes, which subsequently resulted in the presence of free polymer chains in solution. The free polymer chains were isolated and used to estimate the molecular weights and polydispersity index of chains attached to the surface. In addition, by varying the polymerization time, we were able to obtain poly(VBTAC) brushes with grafting density up to 0.78 chains/nm2 with homogeneous distributions of apparent needle‐like structures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Patterned polymer brushes can be prepared by a novel strategy that combines surface‐initiated polymerization and microcontact printing (see picture; μCP SAM indicates the self‐assembled monolayer formed by microcontact printing). The living nature of the polymerization process permits the thickness of the polymer brush and its physical properties to be accurately controlled.  相似文献

We report the construction of a molecular recognition layer composed of polyelectrolyte brushes and metal complexes on the surface of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and the sensing abilities for various volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Atom‐transfer radical polymerization of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate from an initiator‐terminated self‐assembled monolayer yielded polyelectrolyte brushes on the surface of a weight‐detectable quartz crystal microbalance. One end of a poly[(2‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] brush was covalently attached onto the surface of a sensor. We found that metallophthalocyanines with four bulky pentaphenylbenzene substituents could adsorb volatile organic compounds selectively into their cavities. Macromolecular metal complexes were prepared by immersing polymer‐brush‐modified QCMs into an aqueous solution of sterically protected cobalt phthalocyanine. Anionic cobalt phthalocyanine was trapped in the polymer brushes and acted as a molecular receptor for the sensing of VOC molecules.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) mixed polymer brushes on the surface of clay layers were prepared by using in situ free radical polymerization. Free radical initiator molecules with two quaternary ammonium groups at both ends were intercalated into the interlayer spacing of clay layers. The amount of polymer brushes grafted on the surface of clay layers can be controlled by controlling the polymerization time. Thermogravimetric analysis, X‐ray diffraction, and high‐resolution transmission electron microscope results indicated successful preparation of the mixed polymer brushes on the surface of clay layers. The kinetics of the grafting of the monomers was also studied. The mixed polymer brushes on the surface of clay layers were used as compatibilizers in blends of PS and PMMA. In the blends, the intercalated clay particles tend to locate at the interface of two phases reducing the interfacial tension. In the meanwhile, PMMA homopolymer chains tend to intercalate into clay layers. The driving force for the intercalation is the compatibility between homo‐PMMA chains and PMMA brushes on the surface of clay layers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: This paper demonstrates a new, reliable, and simple method for fabricating micropatterned nanoparticle arrays that can serve as templates for the surface‐initiated polymerization of polymer brushes. As a proof of concept, we micropatterned gold nanoparticles (Au‐NPs, ≈10 nm) onto glass, silicon, polystyrene, and gold surfaces by a simple three‐step process: (1) microcontact printing of soluble polymer, (2) incubation with a solution of Au‐NPs, and (3) lift‐off of the template in a mixture of ethanol and deionized water. 40 µm wide features were successfully fabricated without any significant defects or nonspecific adsorption on the background. To demonstrate the utility of these Au‐NP templates, we subsequently polymerized N‐isopropylacrylamide by surface‐initiated polymerization, using a surface‐bound initiator.

High‐density polymer brushes on substrates exhibit unique properties and functions stemming from the extended conformations due to the surface constraint. To date, such chain organizations have been mostly attained by synthetic strategies of surface‐initiated living polymerization. We show herein a new method to prepare a high‐density polymer brush architecture using surface segregation and self‐assembly of diblock copolymers containing a side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymer (SCLCP). The surface segregation is attained from a film of an amorphous base polymer (polystyrene, PS) containing a minor amount of a SCLCP‐PS diblock copolymer upon annealing above the glass‐transition temperature. The polystyrene portion of the diblock copolymer can work as a laterally mobile anchor for the favorable self‐assembly on the polystyrene base film.  相似文献

A series of poly(amino (meth)acrylate) brushes, poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA), poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate) (PDMAEA), poly(2‐(tert‐butylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PTBAEMA), has been synthesized via surface‐confined controlled/living radical polymerizations using surface‐confined initiator from silane self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) on silicon (Si) wafer substrates. Chemical methods and efficacies for two types of living radical polymerization, atom transfer radical (ATRP) and single electron transfer (SET‐LRP), are described and contrasted for the surface confined polymerization of poly(amino (meth)acrylate)s. Effects of solvent, catalyst/ligand system, and temperature on polymerization success were examined. Chemical compositions after each reaction step were characterized with FTIR spectroscopy, contact angle goniometry, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy while the SAM and polymer brush thicknesses were measured with spectroscopic ellipsometry. For the first time, this study demonstrates successful surface‐confined polymerization of a series of poly(amine (meth)acrylate) brushes from Si‐SAM substrates using a copper metal electron donor catalyst. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrophilic polymer brushes grown via surface‐initiated polymerization from silicon oxide surfaces can detach or degraft in aqueous media. Degrafting of these chain end‐tethered polymers is believed to involve hydrolysis of bonds at the polymer–substrate interface. Degrafting so far has not been reported for hydrophobic polymer brushes in non‐aqueous media. This study has investigated the degrafting and swelling properties of poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) brushes in different water‐miscible, organic solvents, viz. DMF, acetone and THF. In the presence of a sufficient quantity of water in the organic solvent, degrafting was also observed for PtBMA brushes. More importantly, however, the rate of degrafting depended on the nature of the organic solvent and the apparent initial rate constant of the degrafting reaction was found to correlate with the swelling ratio of the polymer brush in the different solvents. This correlation is first, direct evidence in support of the hypothesis that degrafting is facilitated by a tension that acts on the bond(s) that tether the polymer chains to the surface and which is amplified upon swelling of the polymer brush.  相似文献

We report the first ever use of electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (eATRP) employing a bipolar electrochemical method for the fabrication of both gradient and patterned polymer brushes. A potential gradient generated on a bipolar electrode allowed the formation of a concentration gradient of a CuI polymerization catalyst through the one‐electron reduction of CuII, resulting in the gradient growth of poly(NIPAM) brushes from an initiator‐modified substrate surface set close to a bipolar electrode. These polymer brushes could be fabricated in three‐dimensional gradient shapes with control over thickness, steepness, and modified area by varying the electrolytic conditions. Moreover, by site‐selective application of potential during bipolar electrolysis, a polymer brush with a circular pattern was successfully formed. Polymerization was achieved using both a polar monomer (NIPAM) and a nonpolar monomer (MMA) with the eATRP system.  相似文献
