We theoretically investigated a hybrid absorptive-dispersive optical multistability (OM) behavior in a three-level ladder-type quantum well system inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the frequency detuning of the control field and the electronic cooperation parameter as well as the total decay rates can affect the optical multistability behavior dramatically, which can be used to manipulate efficiently the threshold intensity and the hysteresis loop. The effect of the intensity of the control field on the OM is also studied. Our study is much more practical than its atomic counterpart due to its flexible design and the wide adjustable parameters. Thus it may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics and solid-state quantum information science. 相似文献

We present sideband control of optical bistability and multistability based on trichromatic electromagnetic-field induced transparency and quantum interference. Appearance or disappearance of the bistability and multistability, manipulation of the hysteresis loop widths, and switching between bistability and tristability are achieved simply by varying the sideband amplitudes or the relative phases of the sidebands to the central component. 相似文献

We analyze optical bistability (OB) behavior based on intersubband transitions in an asymmetric coupled-quantum well (CQW) driven coherently by a probe laser field and a control laser field by means of a unidirectional ring cavity. We demonstrate that OB can be controlled by tuning the energy splitting between two tunnel-coupled electronic levels, the intensity of the control field, and the frequency detuning of the probe and control fields. The influence of the electronic cooperation parameter on the OB behavior is also discussed. This investigation may be used for optimizing and controlling the optical switching process in the CQW solid-state system, which is much more practical than that in atomic system because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength. 相似文献

We study nonlinear optical behaviors in pulse propagation through a medium consisting of four-level cascade-type cold atoms, where a radio-frequency (RF) field couples upper two-folded levels and double-dark resonances (DDRs) can arise. By numerically solving the coupled Bloch-Maxwell equations for atom and field simultaneously in space and time, we demonstrate dynamic control of light propagation and optical switching in such a four-level atomic medium. The proposed scheme may have potential applications in the design of optical switching and optical storage devices. 相似文献

We theoretically investigate optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) behaviour of a closed-loop configuration atomic system driven by a degenerate coupling- field and a degenerate probe field inside a unidirectional ring cavity. It is found that the OB and OM behaviour can be controlled by adjusting- the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling- field, respectively. Interestingly, our numerical results show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting- the intensity of the coupling- field under a appropriate frequency detuning. The effect of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OB behaviour is also discussed. 相似文献

We investigate the steady-state optical bistability behavior in a three-level Λ-type atomic system closed by a microwave field under the condition that the applied fields are in resonance with corresponding atomic transitions. We investigate possible formation and propagation of localized, shape-preserving nonlinear optical pulse in a resonant, lifetime-broadened four-level tripod atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We prove both analytically and numerically that although in anomalous dispersion regimes near resonance a superluminal optical soliton may appear, such soliton suffers serious absorption. However, by choosing appropriate parameters to make the system work in normal dispersion regimes and within an EIT transparency window, ultraslow optical solitons with very low light intensity can form and propagate stably in the system. 相似文献

Dynamic propagation and storing-retrieving of a weak infrared (IR)-light pulse in a coupled semiconductor double-quantum-dot (SDQD) structure are studied theoretically with feasible parameters. Two characteristic features are found. First, it is shown that, with a constant control field, the SDQD medium is transparent to the probe pulse which propagates over sufficiently long distances. Furthermore, the pulse shape remains unchanged on propagation. Second, with a time-varying control field, we are able to store and retrieve the probe pulse in this four-subband SDQD medium by adiabatically switching off and on the control field. Such a four-subband SDQD system for storing and retrieving coherent information is much more practical than its atomic counterpart as a result of its flexible design and the controllable (tunable) interference strength and thus provides a new possibility for technological applications in quantum information science in the SDQD solid-state nanostructure. 相似文献

We study the behavior of optical bistability (OB) in a triple semiconductor quantum well structure with tunnelling-induced interference, where the system is driven coherently by the probe laser inside the unidirectional ring cavity. The results show that we are able to control efficiently the bistable threshold intensity and the hysteresis loop by tuning the parameters of the system such as laser frequency and tunnelling-induced frequency splitting. This investigation can be used for the development of new types of nanoelectronic devices for realizing switching process. 相似文献

We propose a new scheme to observe the symmetry-breaking dynamics of two counter-propagating beams in a Kerr-type nonlinear waveguide coupler. Using a grating to couple light at normal incidence upon the waveguide allows for a single-beam geometry. The ability of the grating to couple light symmetrically is demonstrated on the basis of a linear coupled-mode approach especially adapted to vertical coupling. The normalized correlation function C(s) of an optical bistable system driven by cross-correlated noises is investigated. Based on the numerical computation and simulation results, it is found that: (1) The intensity of multiplicative noise D and the intensity of additive noise Q play opposite roles on C(s), i.e., D enhances the rate of fluctuation decay of transmitted light intensity and Q slows down the rate of fluctuation decay of the transmitted light intensity; (2) The strength of correlations between the multiplicative and additive noises λ slows down the rate of decay of intensity fluctuation; (3) For the case of positive correlated noises (λ>0), the increasing cooperativity parameter C slows down the rate of decay of intensity fluctuation firstly and then enhances it; (4) For the case of negative correlated noises (λ<0), the increasing C almost does not affect the rate of decay of intensity fluctuation firstly and then enhances it. 相似文献

The hysteresis behavior of a dense collection of two-level atoms embedded in a linear dielectric medium in an optical cavity

Optical bistable behavior in a quasi-waveguide containing non-linear film has been experimentally investigated in several
publications in the past years; however, the physical mechanism for optical bistability has not been theoretically explained.
In the present letter, we propose a theoretical model and successfully explain the observed optical bistability of both the
reflected light and the scattered light (m-lines) in a non-linear quasi-waveguide. The optical bistability in the non-linear quasi-waveguide is due to the scattering-type
wavevector mismatch mechanism.

The emission characteristics of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) operated in a single-transverse mode and coupled to an external cavity with a diffraction grating as a frequency-selective element are analyzed experimentally, numerically and analytically. The experiments yield a rather abrupt turn-on of the VCSEL to a high-amplitude emission state and hysteresis phenomena. The experimental results are explained by numerical simulations and analytical calculations demonstrating the possibility of bistability between lasing and non-lasing states close to threshold. Hence, the scheme might be useful in all-optical photonic switching applications. A detailed bifurcation analysis near threshold is given by superimposing the numerical results with analytical steady-state curves. The mode selection and switching behavior obtained in the simulations can be interpreted from the point of view of the preference of states with the minimal total losses. 相似文献

This paper studies manly spatial evolution of gain without inversion (GWI) and the Rabi frequency E (intensity ?p) of the probe field in an open V-type three-level inversionless lasing system with spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) for both cases with and without Doppler broadening. We found that: (1) Varying sizes of SGC strength (measured by angle θ), atomic exit rate (r0) and ratio (S) of the atomic injection rates has remarkable effect on spatial evolutions of GWI and E (?p). This effect in the case with Doppler broadening is similar to but weaker than that in the case without Doppler broadening. (2) Regardless of that Doppler broadening is present or not, GWI and E (?p) increase with increase of θ, r0 and S in certain value ranges of θ, r0 and S; in the case with SGC we can obtain GWI and E (?p) much larger than those in the case without SGC, while by choosing values of γ0 and S, in the open system we can obtain LWI gain and E (?p) much larger than those in the corresponding closed system. (3) The propagation distance in which GWI exists in the case with Doppler broadening is longer than that in the case without Doppler broadening; in the case without Doppler broadening, we can obtain larger GWI than that in the case with Doppler broadening; but in the case with Doppler broadening, we can obtain larger E (?p) than that in the case without Doppler broadening. 相似文献

In this work, we study the evolution of a Gaussian beam inside a one-dimensional inverted nonlinear photonic crystals (INPC) with a Kerr nonlinearity. The INPC is a kind of virtual crystals which is generated by the optical induction via the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The propagation dynamics of the Gaussian with different total power are identified. Four types of propagation behavior are found. They are collapse beam, breather beam, soliton and symmetry-breaking beam, respectively. The border between these four behavior types are given. For symmetry-breaking beam, an asymmetric profile of the beam is evolving from the symmetry Gaussian, which can be termed as a kind of dynamical symmetry breaking (DSB). The influences on the appearance of the symmetry breaking point are studied by varying input parameters of the Gaussian. The results of this work are both suitable in nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). 相似文献
