Products of Random Rectangular Matrices

We study the asymptotic behaviour of points under matrix cocyles generated by rectangular matrices. In particular we prove a random Perron‐Frobenius and a Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem. We also provide an example where such products of random rectangular matrices arise in the theory of random walks in random environments and where the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem can be used to investigate recurrence problems.     

Integrable operators and the squares of Hankel operators

Integrable operators arise in random matrix theory, where they describe the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of large self-adjoint random matrices from the generalized unitary ensembles. This paper gives sufficient conditions for an integrable operator to be the square of a Hankel operator, and applies the condition to the Airy, associated Laguerre, modified Bessel and Whittaker functions.     

Integrable Structure Behind the WDVV Equations

An integrable structure behind the Witten–Dijkgraaf–Verlinde–Verlinde (WDVV) equations is identified with the reduction of the Riemann–Hilbert problem for the homogeneous loop group . The reduction requires the dressing matrices to be fixed points of an order-two loop group automorphism resulting in a subhierarchy of the hierarchy containing only odd-symmetry flows. The model has Virasoro symmetry; imposing Virasoro constraints ensures the homogeneity property of the Darboux–Egoroff structure. Dressing matrices of the reduced model provide solutions of the WDVV equations.     

A Characterization of Positive Matrices

It is shown that an n-by-n matrix has a strictly dominant positive eigenvalue with positive left and right eigenvectors and this property is inherited by principle submatrices if and only if it is entry-wise positive. This limits the extent to which attractive Perron-Frobenius properities may be generalized outside the positive matrices.Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): 15A48     

Hitchin System on Singular Curves

We study the Hitchin system on singular curves. We consider curves obtainable from the projective line by matching at several points or by inserting cusp singularities. It appears that on such singular curves, all basic ingredients of Hitchin integrable systems (moduli space of vector bundles, dualizing sheaf, Higgs field, etc.) can be explicitly described, which can be interesting in itself. Our main result is explicit formulas for the Hitchin Hamiltonians. We also show how to obtain the Hitchin integrable system on such curves by Hamiltonian reduction from a much simpler system on a finite-dimensional space. We pay special attention to a degenerate curve of genus two for which we find an analogue of the Narasimhan–Ramanan parameterization of the moduli space of SL(2) bundles as well as the explicit expressions for the symplectic structure and Hitchin-system Hamiltonians in these coordinates. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by rederiving the rational and trigonometric Calogero–Moser systems, which are obtained from Hitchin systems on curves with a marked point and with the respective cusp and node.

On Skew E–W Matrices

An E–W matrix M is a ( ? 1, 1)‐matrix of order , where t is a positive integer, satisfying that the absolute value of its determinant attains Ehlich–Wojtas' bound. M is said to be of skew type (or simply skew) if is skew‐symmetric where I is the identity matrix. In this paper, we draw a parallel between skew E–W matrices and skew Hadamard matrices concerning a question about the maximal determinant. As a consequence, a problem posted on Cameron's website [7] has been partially solved. Finally, codes constructed from skew E–W matrices are presented. A necessary and sufficient condition for these codes to be self‐dual is given, and examples are provided for lengths up to 52.

Newton-Like Iteration Based on a Cubic Polynomial for Structured Matrices

We recall Newtons iteration for computing the inverse or Moore–Penrose generalized inverse of a matrix. Then we specialize this approach to the case of structured matrices where all input, output and intermediate auxiliary matrices are represented in a compressed form, via their short displacement generators. We design a new Newton-like iteration based on a cubic polynomial and show its effectiveness by some numerical experiments for matrices from the Toeplitz-like class and the Cauchy-like class.

By exploiting very recent results concerning linear separation between a set and a convex cone, the image space approach allows us to achieve new regularity conditions for vector minimum problems. In particular, we obtain very general Mangasarian–Fromovitz type conditions.     

Semilinear elliptic equations for the fractional Laplacian involving critical exponential growth

We establish the existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for a class of nonlocal equations involving the fractional Laplacian operator, nonlinearities with critical exponential growth, and potentials that may change sign. Constructions for Circulant and Group‐Developed Generalized Weighing Matrices

An elementary construction yields a new class of circulant (so‐called “Butson‐type”) generalized weighing matrices, which have order and weight n², all of whose entries are nth roots of unity, for all positive integers , where . The idea is extended to a wider class of constructions giving various group‐developed generalized weighing matrices.     

The unitary completion and QR iterations for a class of structured matrices

We consider the problem of completion of a matrix with a specified lower triangular part to a unitary matrix. In this paper we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions of existence of a unitary completion without any additional constraints and give a general formula for this completion. The paper is mainly focused on matrices with the specified lower triangular part of a special form. For such a specified part the unitary completion is a structured matrix, and we derive in this paper the formulas for its structure. Next we apply the unitary completion method to the solution of the eigenvalue problem for a class of structured matrices via structured QR iterations.

     

Absorbing Boundary Conditions for Hyperbolic Systems

<正>This paper deals with absorbing boundary conditions for hyperbolic systems in one and two space dimensions.We prove the strict well-posedness of the resulting initial boundary value problem in 1D.Afterwards we establish the GKS-stability of the corresponding Lax-Wendroff-type finite difference scheme.Hereby,we have to extend the classical proofs,since the(discretized) absorbing boundary conditions do not fit the standard form of boundary conditions for hyperbolic systems.
