A sensitive method for the spectrophotometric determination of indium with 1-(2-pyridylmethylideneamine)-3-(salicylideneamine)thiourea is proposed. A yellow complex is formed at pH 4.5 (succinate buffer) in a medium containing 40% dimethylformamide, and the absorbance is measured at 415 nm. The molar absorptivity is 6.2 x 10(4)l.mole(-1).cm(-1). The relative standard deviation of the procedure is 1.5%. The method has been applied to determination of indium in a nickel alloy and three zinc ores, with prior isolation of indium by co-precipitation with ammonia and extraction into n-butyl acetate from 5M hydrobromic acid.

Using spectrophotometric methods, the protopysis constant of the 5.ClDMPAP reagent (pKa1 = −0.19; pKa2 = 1.97; pKa3 = 11.98) and the stability constant of its vanadic complex (6.0 ± 0.11) × 1014 were determined. A high-sensitivity spectrophotometric method was developed to determine V(V) using 0.1–1.2 ppm and pH = 3.8. ε586 = 55,300 ± 400 liters · mol−1 · cm−1. A study on the most important interferences and the way to eliminate them was carried out. The method can be applied to the determination of the element in steels and ferrovanadiums.

Summary A highly sensitive and selective Spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of yttrium in aluminium base alloys. The method is based on the red water-insoluble complex formed when yttrium and 1-[(5-methyl-2-pyridyl)azo]-2-naphthol (5-Me--PAN) react in a pH 9.5–11.2 solution. This complex could be extracted into ether (absorption maximum, 530 nm). Beer's law is obeyed up to 1 p. p. m. of yttrium and the molar absorptivity is 6.4 · 104 l · mole–1 · cm–1 at 530 nm.

1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) rcacts with uranium to form a deep red precipitate in ammoniacal solutions, this can be extracted with chloroform if sodium chloride or sulfate is added and it has a maximum absorption at 560 mμ The color is stable and follows Beer's law. Trace amounts of uranium may be determined in the presence of many metals without prior separation if strong complexing agents, such) as EDTA or cyanide, are added

Reaction between gadolinium(III) and 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol (5- Br-PADAP) was studied for delineating optimal conditions for complexation. This reagent can be used for the spectrophotometric determination of Gd(III) in concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 1.2 ppm (a = 1.76(+/- 0.03) x 10(5) (1.(-1) mole(-1). cm). The reaction takes place at a pH between 9.2 and 11.6. In the presence of Triton X-100 this complex is soluble in water. In order to overcome difficulties caused by the presence of other lanthanides, an ion exchange chromatographic technique was used.

A simple and highly selective spectrophotometric method for the determination of cobalt based upon the rapid reaction with PAN in the presence of surfactants and minute amounts of ammonium persulphate at pH 5.0 is described. The cobalt(III) chelate is made water-soluble by a neutral surfactant. Triton X-100, combined with sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate (DBS). Iron(III), bismuth, tin(IV) and aluminium are masked with oxalate or citrate. Iron(II) must be absent. The other metal-PAN chelates, except that of nickel, are readily decomposed by EDTA. Up to 150 microg of nickel does not interfere. When larger amounts up to 625 microg are present, the absorbance can be corrected by measurements at two wavelengths. In a strongly acid medium (below pH 0.5) the nickel and other metal chelates are completely and instantaneously decomposed, while the cobalt(III) chelate remains unchanged. When, in place of EDTA, several ml of 6M hydrochloric acid are added after the colour development, nickel in quantities up to 1250 microg can be tolerated. A several hundredfold excess of zinc and manganese does not interfere. At 620 nm Beer's law is obeyed over the cobalt concentration range 0.4-3.2 microg/ml. The precision (95% confidence) is +/- 1.0 microg for 100 microg of cobalt. The molar absorptivity is 1.90 x 10(4) l. mole(-1) .cm(-1).

The complex of cadmium with the reagent 2-(-5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol (5-Br-PADAP) has been studied. The composition, stability constant, and free energy change of formation of the complex have been determined. A sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of cadmium has been developed and applied for a range of concentration of 0.4–4.0 μg/ml cadmium using the complex Cd-5-Br-PADAP. The optimum conditions for maximum sensitivity of determination such as standing time, pH, wavelength, and order of addition have been determined. The effect of foreign ions on this method has been also studied.

The direct determination of uranium(VI) by a flow-injection procedure is based on spectrophotometric measurement with 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol in the present of fluoride. The interfering effects of many commonly occuring elements were studied. The calibration curve was linear over the range 0.5–20 mg 1?1 uranium(VI). The relative standard deviation obtained on a leach liquor containing 10 mg 1?1 uranium(VI) was 1.9%. The procedure is rapid and convenient, and up to 40 samples can be analysed per hour.

1-(2-Quinolylazo)-2,4,5-trihydroxybenzene has been proposed as a sensitive chromogenic reagent for the simultaneous determination of iron and copper in presence of thiosemicarbazide. The molar absorptivities are 1.86 x 10(4) l.mole(-1).cm(-1) at 510 nm for iron and 2.54 x 10(4) l.mole(-1).cm(-1) at 550 nm for copper. Trace levels of these two metals have been determined in some foodstuff's, body tissues and milk samples.

A new chromogenic reagent, 2-(2-quinolylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol (QADEAP) was synthesized. A highly sensitive, selective and rapid method for the determination of silver based on the rapid reaction of silver(I) with QADEAP has been developed. In the presence of citric acid-sodium hydroxide buffer solution (pH=5.0) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) medium, QADEAP reacts with silver to form a violet complex of a molar ratio 1:2 (silver to QADEAP). The molar absorptivity of the complex is 1.33x10(5) L mol(-1) cm(-1)at 590 nm. Beer' s law is obeyed in the range of 0.01-0.6 micro g mL(-1). The relative standard deviations for eleven replicate samples of 0.2 microg mL(-1) is 1.38%. This method was applied to the determination of silver in water with satisfactory results.
