Projections from

Let and be two infinite dimensional real Banach spaces. The following question is classical and long-standing. Are the following properties equivalent?

a) There exists a projection from the space of continuous linear operators onto the space of compact linear operators.

b) .

The answer is positive in certain cases, in particular if or has an unconditional basis. It seems that there are few results in the direction of a general solution. For example, suppose that and are reflexive and that or has the approximation property. Then, if , there is no projection of norm 1, from onto . In this paper, one obtains, in particular, the following result:

Theorem. Let be a real Banach space which is reflexive (resp. with a separable dual), of infinite dimension, and such that has the approximation property. Let be a real scalar with . Then can be equivalently renormed such that, for any projection from onto , one has . One gives also various results with two spaces and .

     

Characterizations of elements with compact support in the dual spaces of -modules of

For a locally compact group and , let be the Figà-Talamanca-Herz algebra and let be its dual Banach space. For a Banach -module of , we denote the norm closure of the subspace of the elements in with compact support by . We prove that an element of is in if and only if for any 0$">, there exists a compact subset of such that for all with and . In particular, we have that an element of is in if and only if for any 0$">, there exists a compact subset of such that for all with . If has an orthogonal complement in , we characterize by the following condition: is in if and only if for any 0$"> and any compact subset of , there exists some with and such that \Vert u\Vert - \epsilon $">. Some results of Flory (1971) and Miao (1999) can be obtained from our main theorems by taking and as some -subalgebras of .

     

Characterizations of weakly compact operators on

Let be a locally compact Hausdorff space and let , is continuous and vanishes at infinity} be provided with the supremum norm. Let and be the -rings generated by the compact subsets and by the compact subsets of , respectively. The members of are called -Borel sets of since they are precisely the -bounded Borel sets of . The members of are called the Baire sets of . denotes the dual of . Let be a quasicomplete locally convex Hausdorff space. Suppose is a continuous linear operator. Using the Baire and -Borel characterizations of weakly compact sets in as given in a previous paper of the author's and combining the integration technique of Bartle, Dunford and Schwartz, we obtain 35 characterizations for the operator to be weakly compact, several of which are new. The independent results on the regularity and on the regular Borel extendability of -additive -valued Baire measures are deduced as an immediate consequence of these characterizations. Some other applications are also included.

     

The moduli space of -flat connections and the fusion rules

The aim of this paper is to determine the existence condition of the moduli space of -flat connections on -holed -sphere , the so-called pair of pants, and to study its relationship to the fusion rules. The existence condition can be expressed by a system of inequalities with the entries of highest weights with respect to the fundamental weights. This gives a necessary condition for the fusion coefficents to be nontrivial. We also find that the fusion coefficient of a triplet of extremal highest weights equals one. This can be considered a quantum counterpart of the PRV-conjecture.

     

Computing

Let denote the Von Mangoldt function and . We describe an elementary method for computing isolated values of . The complexity of the algorithm is time and space. A table of values of for up to is included, and some times of computation are given.

     

On the unitary dual of

In this paper we begin a systematic study of the unitarity question for genuine representations of the group . The main result is that we find a class of unitary representations (mostly isolated) analogous to the special unipotent representations defined by D. Barbasch and D. Vogan. In particular the full unitary dual of should be obtainable from this set by complementary series.

     

Newton's formula for

This paper presents an explicit relation between the two sets which are well-known generators of the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra : one by Capelli (1890) and the other by Gelfand (1950). Our formula is motivated to give an exact analogy for the classical Newton's formula connecting the elementary symmetric functions and the power sum symmetric functions. The formula itself can be deduced from a more general result on Yangians obtained by Nazarov. Our proof is elementary and has an advantage in its direct accessibility.

In this paper, it is shown that the group algebra is right CS if and only if . Moreover, when , then is also CS as a module over its center.

     

Best bounds for the approximate units for certain ideals of

We compute the best bound for the approximate units of the augmentation ideal of the group algebra of a locally compact amenable group . More generally such a calculation is performed for the kernel of the canonical map from onto , being a closed amenable subgroup of . Analogous results involving certain ideals of the Fourier algebra of an amenable group are also discussed.

     

Selective ultrafilters and

Mathias (Happy families, Ann. Math. Logic. 12 (1977), 59-111) proved that, assuming the existence of a Mahlo cardinal, it is consistent that CH holds and every set of reals in is -Ramsey with respect to every selective ultrafilter . In this paper, we show that the large cardinal assumption cannot be weakened.

     

Conjugacy Classes of

Let be a quadratic extension of a global field , of characteristic not two, and the integral closure in of a Dedekind ring of -integers in . Then is isomorphic to the spinorial kernel for an indefinite quadratic -lattice of rank 4. The isomorphism is used to study the conjugacy classes of unitary groups of primitive odd binary hermitian matrices under the action of .

     

Crystal bases for

A construction of the crystal bases for the quantized enveloping algebra of is discussed.

     

Shintani functions on

In this paper, we give a formulation and an explicit formula for Shintani function on , which has been studied by Murase and Sugano in the theory of automorphic -functions. In particular, we obtain the multiplicity of this function.

     

On component groups of and degeneracy maps

For an integer and a prime not dividing , we study the kernel of the degeneracy map , where and are the component groups of and , respectively. This is then used to determine the kernel of the degeneracy map when . We also compute the group structure of in some cases.

     

Left-symmetric algebras for

We study the classification problem for left-symmetric algebras with commutation Lie algebra in characteristic . The problem is equivalent to the classification of étale affine representations of . Algebraic invariant theory is used to characterize those modules for the algebraic group which belong to affine étale representations of . From the classification of these modules we obtain the solution of the classification problem for . As another application of our approach, we exhibit left-symmetric algebra structures on certain reductive Lie algebras with a one-dimensional center and a non-simple semisimple ideal.

     

On the divergence of the means of double Walsh-Fourier series

In 1992, Móricz, Schipp and Wade proved the a.e. convergence of the double means of the Walsh-Fourier series () for functions in ( is the unit square). This paper aims to demonstrate the sharpness of this result. Namely, we prove that for all measurable function we have a function such as and does not converge to a.e. (in the Pringsheim sense).

     

Monomial Bases for

We consider the polynomial algebra as a module over the mod Steenrod algebra, , being an odd prime. We give a minimal set of generators consisting of monomials and characterise all such `monomial bases'.
