LetE be a 1-injective Banach lattice,X any Banach space andT: E ← X a norm bounded linear operator. Then eitherT is an isomorphism on some copy ofl inE or for all σ > 0 there is φ ∈E + such that ‖Tu‖≦φ (|u|)+σ ‖u‖ for alluE. We deduce the theorem that: A norm order continuous injective Banach lattice is order isomorphic to an (AL)-space.  相似文献

It is shown here that for any Banach spaceE-valued amart (X n) of classB, almost sure convergence off(Xn) tof(X) for eachf in a total subset ofE * implies scalar convergence toX.  相似文献

LetX be any compact convex subset of a locally convex Hausdorff space andE be a complex Banach space. We denote byA(X, E) the space of all continuous and affineE-valued functions defined onX. In this paper we prove thatX is a Choquet simplex if and only if the dual ofA(X, E) is isometrically isomorphic by a selection map toM m (X, E*), the space ofE*-valued,w*-regular boundary measures onX. This extends and strengthens a result of G. M. Ustinov. To do this we show that for any compact convex setX, each element of the dual ofA(X, E) can be represented by a measure inM m (X, E*) with the same norm, and this representation is unique if and only ifX is a Choquet simplex. We also prove that ifX is metrizable andE is separable then there exists a selection map from the unit ball of the dual ofA(X, E) into the unit ball ofM m (X, E*) which is weak* to weak*-Borel measurable. This work will constitute a portion of the author's Ph.D. Thesis at the University of Illinois.  相似文献

Istratescu's characterization of complex strict convex (csc) Banach spaces is used to show that a modulared sum of a sequence ofcsc Banach spaces is again acsc Banach space. The equivalence of the Strong Maximum Modulus Property and complex strict convexity is used to show thatL 1(,X) iscsc whenX is (real) strictly convex and thatl 1(X n) iscsc if and only if eachX n iscsc.  相似文献

We show that ifX is a Banach space and if there is a non-zero real-valuedC -smooth function onX with bounded support, then eitherX contains an isomorphic copy ofc 0(N), or there is an integerk greater than or equal to 1 such thatX is of exact cotype 2k and, in this case,X contains an isomorphic copy ofl 2k(N). We also show that ifX is a Banach space such that there is onX a non-zero real-valuedC 4-smooth function with bounded support and ifX is of cotypeq forq<4, thenX is isomorphic to a Hilbert space.  相似文献

LetX be a Banach space with an unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition (E n). We consider the general problem of characterizing conditions under which one can construct an unconditional basis forX by forming an unconditional basis for eachE n. For example, we show that if sup n dimE n<∞ andX has Gordon-Lewis local unconditional structure thenX has an unconditional basis of this type. We also give an example of a non-Hilbertian spaceX with the property that wheneverY is a closed subspace ofX with a UFDD (E n) such that sup n dimE n<∞ thenY has an unconditional basis, showing that a recent result of Komorowski and Tomczak-Jaegermann cannot be improved. In this paper we study the spaces ∞p(E, X) of p-lattice summing operators from a Banach space E to a Banach lattice X. The main results characterize those E and X for which Δp(E, X) = IIp(E, X) and we show that ∞(E, X)=Δ2(E, X) for an infinite dimensional Banach lattice X of finite cotype if and only if E is isomorphic to a Hilbert space.  相似文献

Theorem 1. LetX be a Banach space. (a) IfX has a closed subspace in which no normalized sequence converges weak to zero, thenl 1 is isomorphic to a subspace ofX. (b) IfX contains a bounded sequence which has no weak convergent subsequence, thenX contains a separable subspace whose dual is not separable. We introduce here the notion of superstable Banach space, as the superproperty associated with the stability property of J. L. Krivine and B. Maurey. IfE is superstable, so are theL p (E) for eachp∈[1, +∞[. If the Banach spaceX uniformly imbeds into a superstable Banach space, then there exists an equivalent invariant superstable distance onX; as a consequenceX contains subspaces isomorphic tol p spaces (for somep∈[1, ∞[). We give also a generalization of a result of P. Enflo: the unit ball ofc 0 does not uniformly imbed into any stable Banach space.  相似文献

It is shown that if {y n} is a block of type I of a symmetric basis {x n} in a Banach spaceX, then {y n} is equivalent to {x n} if and only if the closed linear span [y n] of {y n} is complemented inX. The result is used to study the symmetric basic sequences of the dual space of a Lorentz sequence spaced(a, p). Let {x n,f n} be the unit vector basis ofd(a, p), for 1≤p<+∞. It is shown that every infinite-dimensional subspace ofd(a, p) (respectively, [f n] has a complemented subspace isomorphic tol p (respectively,l q, 1/p+1/q=1 when 1<p<+∞ andc 0 whenp=1) and numerous other results on complemented subspaces ofd(a, p) and [f n] are obtained. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions such that [f n] have exactly two non-equivalent symmetric basic sequences. Finally, we exhibit a Banach spaceX with symmetric basis {x n} such that every symmetric block basic sequence of {x n} spans a complemented subspace inX butX is not isomorphic to eitherc 0 orl p, 1≤p<+∞.  相似文献

We show that ifE is a complex Banach space which contains no subspace isomorphic tol 1, then each infinite dimensional subspace ofE′ contains a normalized sequence which converges to zero for the weak star topology. Dedicated to the memory of Klaus Floret (1941–2002).  相似文献

It is proved that ifE is a separable Banach lattice withE′ weakly sequentially complete,F is a Banach space andT:E→F is a bounded linear operator withT′F′ non-separable, then there is a subspaceG ofE, isomorphic toC(Δ), such thatT G is an isomorphism, whereC(Δ) denotes the space of continuous real valued functions on the Cantor discontinuum. This generalizes an earlier result of the second-named author. A number of conditions are proved equivalent for a Banach latticeE to contain a subspace order isomorphic toC(Δ). Among them are the following:L 1 is lattice isomorphic to a sublattice ofE′;C(Δ)′ is lattice isomorphic to a sublattice ofE′; E contains an order bounded sequence with no weak Cauchy subsequence;E has a separable closed sublatticeF such thatF′ does not have a weak order unit. LetX be a Banach space. A Banach spaceY is an envelope ofX if (1)Y is finitely representable inX; (2) any Banach spaceZ finitely representable inX and of density character not exceeding that ofY is isometric to a subspace ofY. Lindenstrauss and Pelczynski have asked whether any separable Banach space has a separable envelope. We give a negative answer to this question by showing the existence of a Banach space isomorphic tol 2, which has no separable envelope. A weaker positive result holds: any separable Banach space has an envelope of density character ≦ℵ1 (assuming the continuum hypothesis).  相似文献

The class of stable Banach spaces, inspired by the stability theory in mathematical logic, was introduced by Krivine and Maurey and provided the proper context for the abstract formulation of Aldous’ result of subspaces ofL 1. In this paper we study the wider class of weakly stable Banach spaces, where the exchangeability of the iterated limits occurs only for sequences belonging to weakly compact subsets, introduced independently by Garling (in an earlier unpublished version of his expository paper on stable Banach spaces brought recently to our attention) and by the authors. Taking into account Rosenthal’s application of the study of pointwise compact sets of Baire-1 functions (Rosenthal compact spaces) in the study of Banach spaces (for whichl 1 does not embed isomorphically) and of the study of Rosenthal compact sets by Rosenthal and Bourgain-Fremlin-Talagrand, we prove the following analogue of the Krivine-Maurey theorem for weakly stable spaces:If X is infinite dimensional and weakly stable then either l p for some p≧1or co embeds isomorphically in X (§1). Garling (in the above reference) proved this result under the additional assumption thatX* is separable. We also construct an example of a Banach spaceX which is weakly stable, without an equivalent stable norm, and such thatl 2 embeds isomorphically in every infinite dimensional subspace ofX (§3).  相似文献

Two closely related results are presented, one of them concerned with the connection between topological and measure-theoretic properties of compact spaces, the other being a non-separable analogue of a result of Peŀczyński's about Banach spaces containingL 1. Let τ be a regular cardinal satisfying the hypothesis that κω<τ whenever κ<τ. The following are proved: 1) A compact spaceT carries a Radon measure which is homogeneous of type τ, if and only if there exists a continuous surjection ofT onto [0, 1]τ. 2) A Banach spaceX has a subspace isomorphic tol 1(τ) if and only ifX has a subspace isomorphic toL 1({0, 1}τ). An example is given to show that a more recent result of Rosenthal's about Banach spaces containingl 1 does not have an obvious transfinite analogue. A second example (answering a question of Rosenthal's) shows that there is a Banach spaceX which contains no copy ofl 11), while the unit ball ofX is not weakly sequentially compact.  相似文献

It is proved that there exists a positive function Φ(∈) defined for sufficiently small ∈ 〉 0 and satisfying limt→0 Φ(∈) =0 such that for any integersn>0, ifQ is a projection ofl 1 n onto ak-dimensional subspaceE with ‖|Q‖|≦1+∈ then there is an integerh〉=k(1−Φ(∈)) and anh-dimensional subspaceF ofE withd(F,l 1 h ) 〈= 1+Φ (∈) whered(X, Y) denotes the Banach-Mazur distance between the Banach spacesX andY. Moreover, there is a projectionP ofl 1 n ontoF with ‖|P‖| ≦1+Φ(∈). Author was partially supported by the N.S.F. Grant MCS 79-03042.  相似文献

We study the relation between different spaces of vector-valued polynomials and analytic functions over dual-isomorphic Banach spaces. Under conditions of regularity onE andF, we show that the spaces ofX-valuedn-homogeneous polynomials and analytic functions of bounded type onE andF are isomorphic wheneverX is a dual space. Also, we prove that many of the usual subspaces of polynomials and analytic functions onE andF are isomorphic without conditions on the involved spaces.  相似文献

Let S be a commutative inverse semigroup and let E be its subsemigroup of idempotents. In this paper we define the n-th module cohomology group of Banach algebras and we show that H2l1(E)(l1(S),l1(S)(n))\mathcal {H}^{2}_{\ell^{1}(E)}(\ell^{1}(S),\ell^{1}(S)^{(n)}) is a Banach space for every odd n∈ℕ.  相似文献

We study the Banach spacesX with the following property: there is a numberδ in ]0,1[ such that for some constantC, any finite dimensional subspaceEX contains a subspaceFE with dimFδ dimE which isC-isomorphic to a Euclidean space. We show that if this holds for someδ in ]0,1[ then it also holds for allδ in ]0,1[ and we estimate the functionC=C(δ). We show that this property holds iff the “volume ratio” of the finite dimensional subspaces ofX are uniformly bounded. We also show that (althoughX can have this property without being of cotype 2)L 2(X) possesses this property iffX if of cotype 2. In the last part of the paper, we study theK-convex spaces which have a dual with the above property and we relate it to a certain extension property.  相似文献
