While visiting Princeton for the 1997–98 year I have had the privilege of using Fred’s office and helping Jean to go through his papers. It has been moving to see the magnitude of Fred’s helpful correspondence with students and colleagues, some of which Jean and I returned to them with an invitation to contribute short recollections. This article gives some selections from their responses. Let α be an algebraic integer of degreed whosed conjugates are all real. We give a lower bound for the absolute value of conjugates of α in terms ofd and of the number of conjugates outside the interval [−2; 2]. Combining this with a lower bound for Mahler's measure of a polynomial, we obtain a lower bound for the maximal conjugate of a totally real algebraic integer. We reduce the basis construction problem for character Hopf algebras to a study of special elements, called “super-letters,” which are defined by Shirshov standard words. It is shown that character Hopf algebras having not more than finitely many “hard” super-letters share some of the properties of universal envelopings of finite-dimensional lie algebras. The background for our proofs is the construction of a filtration such that the associated graded algebra is obtained by iterating the skew polynomials construction, possibly followed with factorization. In (Can J Math 51(2):326–346, 1999), Martin and Stinson provide a generalized MacWilliams identity for linear ordered orthogonal arrays and linear ordered codes (introduced by Rosenbloom and Tsfasman (Prob Inform Transm 33(1):45–52, 1997) as “codes for the m-metric”) using association schemes. We give an elementary proof of this generalized MacWilliams identity using group characters and use it to derive an explicit formula for the dual type distribution of a linear ordered code or orthogonal array.   相似文献

Risler & Trotman in 1997 proved that the multiplicity of an analytic function germ is left-right lipschitz invariant, which provided a partial answer to Zariski conjecture. In this note, based on the recent work of Comte, Milman & Trotman, we generalize the work of them to prove that the multiplicity of a C^∞ differentiable function germ is also left-right lipschitz invariant.  相似文献

We consider the stochastic heat equation in one space dimension and compute – for a particular choice of the initial datum – the exact long time asymptotic. In the Carmona-Molchanov approach to intermittence in non stationary random media this corresponds to the identification of the sample Lyapunov exponent. Equivalently, by interpreting the solution as the partition function of a directed polymer in a random environment, we obtain a weak law of large numbers for the quenched free energy. The result agrees with the one obtained in the physical literature via the replica method. The proof is based on a representation of the solution in terms of the weakly asymmetric exclusion process. In a previous paper we introduced a new concept, the notion of ℰ-martingales and we extended the well-known Doob inequality (for 1 < p < + ∞) and the Burkholder–Davis–Gundy inequalities (for p = 2) to ℰ-martingales. After showing new Fefferman-type inequalities that involve sharp brackets as well as the space bmo q , we extend the Burkholder–Davis–Gundy inequalities (for 1 < p < + ∞) to ℰ-martingales. By means of these inequalities we give sufficient conditions for the closedness in L p of a space of stochastic integrals with respect to a fixed ℝd-valued semimartingale, a question which arises naturally in the applications to financial mathematics. We present various versions of generalized Aleksandrov–Bakelman–Pucci (ABP) maximum principle for L p -viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear second-order elliptic and parabolic equations with possibly superlinear-growth gradient terms and unbounded coefficients. We derive the results via the “iterated” comparison function method, which was introduced in our previous paper (Koike and Święch in Nonlin. Diff. Eq. Appl. 11, 491–509, 2004) for fully nonlinear elliptic equations. Our results extend those of (Koike and Święch in Nonlin. Diff. Eq. Appl. 11, 491–509, 2004) and (Fok in Comm. Partial Diff.
