We report the first direct resonant soft x-ray scattering observations of orbital ordering. We have studied the low temperature phase of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, a compound that displays charge and orbital ordering. Previous claims of orbital ordering in such materials have relied on observations at the manganese K edge. These claims have been questioned in several theoretical studies. Instead we have employed resonant soft x-ray scattering at the manganese L(III) and L(II) edges which probes the orbital ordering directly. Energy scans at constant wave vector are compared to theoretical predictions and suggest that at all temperatures there are two separate contributions to the scattering: direct orbital ordering and strong cooperative Jahn-Teller distortions of the Mn3+ ions.

We found that the conventional model of orbital-ordering of 3x(2)-r(2)/3y(2)-r(2) type in the e(g) states of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 is incompatible with measurements of linear dichroism in the Mn 2p-edge x-ray absorption, whereas these e(g) states exhibit predominantly cross-type orbital ordering of x(2)-z(2)/y(2)-z(2). LDA+U band-structure calculations reveal that such a cross-type orbital-ordering results from a combined effect of antiferromagnetic structure, Jahn-Teller distortion, and on-site Coulomb interactions.

这和在此温度以下,La1/8Ca7/aMnO3出现自旋倾斜态密切相关.

We have succeeded in detecting ferro-type orbital states in Ca2-xSrxRuO4, which is the first outcome in a 4d Mott transition system by the resonant x-ray scattering interference technique. For x=0 (Mott insulator), the resonant signal for d(xy) orbital ordering is observed even at room temperature, in which the Jahn-Teller distortion is negligible. The signal disappears near the metal-insulator transition. On the other hand, in a metallic phase for x=0.5, orbital polarization with d(yz/zx) character dominates. With lowering temperature, the magnitude of the resonant signal slightly decreases owing to the additional influence of the gamma band with d(xy) character.

Motivated by recent experimental results, we study the effect of size reduction on half-doped manganite, La(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3), using the combination of density-functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We find that upon size reduction the charge-ordered antiferromagnetic phase, observed in bulk, is destabilized, giving rise to the stability of a ferromagnetic metallic state. Our theoretical results, carried out on a defect-free nanocluster in isolation, establish the structural changes that follow upon size reduction to be responsible for this. Our study further points out the effect of size reduction to be distinctively different from application of hydrostatic pressure. Interestingly, our DFT+DMFT study additionally reports the correlation-driven stability of the charge-orbitally ordered state in bulk La(0.5) Ca(0.5) MnO(3), even in the absence of long-range magnetic order.

We used ultrafast resonant soft x-ray diffraction to probe the picosecond dynamics of spin and orbital order in La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) after photoexcitation with a femtosecond pulse of 1.5 eV radiation. Complete melting of antiferromagnetic spin order is evidenced by the disappearance of a (1/4,1/4,1/2) diffraction peak. On the other hand, the (1/4,1/4,0) diffraction peak, reflecting orbital order, is only partially reduced. We interpret the results as evidence of destabilization in the short-range exchange pattern with no significant relaxation of the long-range Jahn-Teller distortions. Cluster calculations are used to analyze different possible magnetically ordered states in the long-lived metastable phase. Nonthermal coupling between light and magnetism emerges as a primary aspect of photoinduced phase transitions in manganites.

We present evidence that the insulator-to-metal transition in La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 near x approximately 0.2 is driven by the suppression of coherent Jahn-Teller distortions, originating from d-type orbital ordering. The orbital-ordered state is characterized by large long-range Q2 distortions below T(O'- O*). Above T(O'- O*) we find evidence for coexistence between an orbital-ordered and an orbital-disordered state. This behavior is discussed in terms of electronic phase separation in an orbital-ordered insulating and an orbital-disordered metallic state.

We have analyzed the experimental evidence of charge and orbital ordering in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 using first principles band structure calculations. Our results suggest the presence of two types of Mn sites in the system. One of the Mn sites behaves as an Mn3+ ion, favoring a Jahn-Teller distortion of the surrounding oxygen atoms, while the distortion around the other is not a simple breathing mode kind. Band structure effects are found to dominate the experimental spectrum for orbital and charge ordering, providing an alternate explanation for the experimentally observed results.

Orbital ordering (OO) in the layered perovskite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 has been investigated using the enhanced sensitivity of soft x-ray resonant diffraction at the Mn L edges. The energy dependence of an OO diffraction peak over the L(2,3) edges is compared to ligand-field calculations allowing a distinction between the influences of Jahn-Teller distortions and spin correlations. The energy dependence of the diffraction peak at the Mn L1 edge is remarkably different from that observed at the Mn K edge.

系统研究了Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xAlxO3(x=0,0.03)单相多晶样品在低温下的电磁性质和超声特性.

We investigate the electronic, magnetic, and orbital properties of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 perovskite by means of an ab initio electronic structure calculation within the Hartree-Fock approximation. Using the experimental crystal structure reported by Radaelli et al. [Phys. Rev. B 55, 3015 (1997)]], we find a charge-ordering stripelike ground state. The periodicity of the stripes, and the insulating magnetic structure, consisting of antiferromagnetically coupled zigzag chains, are in agreement with neutron x-ray and electron diffraction experiments. However, the detailed structure is more complex than that envisaged by simple models of charge and orbital order on Mn d levels alone, and is better described as a charge-density wave of oxygen holes, coupled to the Mn spin/orbital order.

High-pressure x-ray powder diffraction has been measured on the half doped rare earth manganite Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 up to a pressure of 15 GPa. We report the presence of a quantifiable amount of shear distortion of the MnO6 octahedra in Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 at high pressures. The lattice strain of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 is minimal at a crossover pressure of p* approximately 7 GPa, with the same lattice strain above and below this pressure achieved by shear and Jahn-Teller-type distortions, respectively. The increase in shear strain with increasing pressure provides a mechanism for the insulating behavior of manganites at high pressures that has not been considered before.

The detailed evolution of the magnitude of the local Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 is obtained across the phase diagram for 0< or =x< or =0.5 from high-quality neutron diffraction data using the atomic pair distribution function method. A local JT distortion is observed in the insulating phase for all Ca concentrations studied. However, in contrast with earlier local structure studies, its magnitude is not constant, but decreases continuously with increasing Ca content. This observation is at odds with a simple small-polaron picture for the insulating state.

Raman spectra of La(0.75)Ca(0.25)MnO(3) have been collected for the first time over a wide pressure range (0-14 GPa) using a diamond anvil cell. The frequency range explored (200-1100 cm(-1)) and the very good quality of the data allowed us to carefully analyze the pressure evolution of the phonon modes of the MnO(6) octahedra. The results show an abrupt transition at approximately 7.5 GPa with an evident deviation from the linear trend of the frequency of the Jahn-Teller phonon versus the applied pressure, accompanied by a strong phonon broadening. This behavior disagrees with the predicted insulator to metal transition and, on the contrary, indicates the occurrence of a new unpredicted phase in the very high pressure regime.

A neutron scattering study of the Mott-Hubbard insulator LaTiO3 ( T(N) = 132 K) reveals a spin wave spectrum that is well described by a nearest-neighbor superexchange constant J = 15.5 meV and a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction ( D = 1.1 meV). The nearly isotropic spin wave spectrum is surprising in view of the absence of a static Jahn-Teller distortion that could quench the orbital angular momentum, and it may indicate strong orbital fluctuations. A resonant x-ray scattering study has uncovered no evidence of orbital order in LaTiO3.

Structural investigations on Pr(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3), Nd(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) and Sm(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) display a systematic tuning in orthorhombic distortion which appears due to a change in A-site ionic size. Comprehensive investigations on dc conduction using various models indicate strong correlation with structural changes. Careful analysis of the ac conductivity mechanism as a function of frequency and temperature brings out a pronounced effect of structural modifications on the polaron conduction mechanism. Contrary to typical manifestations, dc conductivity and relaxation of charge carriers reveal non-Arrhenius behavior. This work provides a detailed and systematic addition to the phase diagram of electronic transport in the rare-earth manganite system doped with a divalent alkali atom.

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the temperature (T) dependence of the lattice excitations in La 0.7Ca 0.3MnO (3). An optical Jahn-Teller phonon exhibits continuous but anomalous damping with increasing temperature in the ferromagnetic-metallic phase and collapses above the Curie temperature T(C) (240 K). We attribute this anomaly to the growing dynamic phase segregation as T-->T(C), thus providing evidence of local fluctuations associated with the short-range polaron or charge/orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic-metallic state.

The ground state of a double-exchange model for orbitally degenerate e(g) electrons with Jahn-Teller lattice coupling and weak disorder is found to be spatially inhomogeneous near half filling. Using a real-space Monte Carlo method we show that doping the half-filled orbitally ordered insulator leads to the appearance of hole-rich disordered regions in an orbitally ordered environment. The doping driven orbital order to disorder transition is accompanied by the emergence of metallic behavior. We present results on transport and optical properties along with spatial patterns for lattice distortions and charge densities, providing a basis for an overall understanding of the low-doping phase diagram of La1 - xCaxMnO3.
