A facile way to prepare free-standing polyelectrolyte multilayer films of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)(PSS)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium)(PDDA) was developed by applying a new pH-dependent sacrificial system based on cross-linked poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) microgels. The tertiary amine groups of PDMAEMA microgels can be protonated in acidic environment, and the protonated microgels were deposited by layer-by-layer (LbL) technique with PSS. PSS/PDDA multilayer films were constructed on the top of the PSS/microgels sacrificial layers. The LbL assembly process was investigated by UV–vis spectroscopy. Further study shows that the free-standing PSS/PDDA multilayer films can be obtained within 3 min by treating the as-prepared films in alkali aqueous solution with a pH of 12.0. The pH-triggered exfoliation of PSS/PDDA multilayer films provides a simple and facile way to prepare LbL assembled free-standing multilayer films.  相似文献

We report the unique layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly behavior of pH-sensitive star-shaped polyelectrolytes with both linear and exponential growth modes controlled by star architecture and assembly conditions. Cationic poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] and anionic poly(acrylic acid) stars were synthesized via "core-first" atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) based on multifunctional initiators, in addition to their linear analogues. We demonstrated the LbL growth behavior as a function of deposition pH (ranging from 5 to 7), number of layers (up to 30 bilayers), and the method of assembly (dip- vs spin-assisted LbL). The spin-assisted LbL assembly makes it possible to render smoother and thinner LbL films with parameters controlled by the shear rate and pH conditions. In contrast, for dip-assisted LbL assembly, the pH-dependent exponential growth was observed for both linear and star polyelectrolytes. In the case of linear/linear pair, the exponential buildup was accompanied with a notable surface segregation which resulted in dramatic surface nonuniformity, "wormlike" heterogeneous morphology, and dramatic surface roughening. In contrast, star/linear and star/star LbL films showed very uniform and smooth surface morphology (roughness below 2.0 nm on the scale of 10 μm × 10 μm) with much larger thickness reaching up to 1.0 μm for 30 bilayers and rich optical interference effects. Star polyelectrolytes with partially screened charges and high mobility caused by compact branched architecture appear to facilitate fast diffusion and exponential buildup of LbL films. We suggest that the fast buildup prevents long-range lateral diffusion of polyelectrolyte star components, hinders large-scale microphase separation, and thus leads to unique thick, smooth, uniform, transparent, and colorful LbL films from star polyelectrolytes in contrast to mostly heterogeneous films from traditional linear counterparts.

An electric field enhanced method is developed for fabricating layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes. Three kinds of electric field enhanced polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes (EPEMs), poly(diallyl dimethylammonium chloride)/poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt) (PDDA/PSS), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)/poly(acrylic acid sodium salt) (PDDA/PAA) and polyethylenimine/poly(acrylic acid sodium salt) (PEI/PAA), were self-assembled on a reverse osmosis membrane (ROM). The pervaporation performances of EPEMs for separating isopropanol–water mixtures (90/10, w/w) are all superior to those of corresponding normal self-assembled polyelectrolytes membranes (PEMs), and the selectivity increases with PDDA/PSS, PDDA/PAA and PEI/PAA in order. For (PEI/PAA)4PEI EPEM, the separation factor is 1075 and permeation flux is 4.05 kg m−2 h−1 at 70 °C. This novel method speeds up the LbL process, which makes it promising for the practical application of the LbL multilayer membrane.  相似文献

A new approach to constructing an enzyme-containing film on the surface of a gold electrode for use as a biosensor is described. A basic multilayer film (BMF) of (PDDA/GNPs) n /PDDA was first constructed on the gold electrode by electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). Glucose oxidase (GOx) was then sorbed into this BMF by dipping the BMF-modified electrode into a GOx solution. The assembly of the BMF was monitored and tested via UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The ferrocenemethanol-mediated cyclic voltammograms obtained from the gold electrode modified with the (PDDA/GNPs) n /PDDA/GOx indicated that the assembled GOx remained electrocatalytically active for the oxidation of glucose. Analysis of the voltammetric signals showed that the surface coverage of active enzyme was a linear function of the number of PDDA/GNPs bilayers. This result confirmed the penetration of GOx into the BMF and suggests that the BMF-based enzyme film forms in a uniform manner. Electrochemical impedance measurements revealed that the biosensor had a lower electron transfer resistance (R et) than that of a sensor prepared by layer-by-layer assembly of PDDA and GOx, due to the presence of gold nanoparticles. The sensitivity of the biosensor for the determination of glucose, which could be controlled by adjusting the number of PDDA/GNPs bilayers, was investigated.  相似文献

A new fiber-optic pH sensor is demonstrated by coating negatively charged polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) nanoparticles, made of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), and positively charged PDDA on the surface of a thin-core fiber modal interferometer (TCFMI) with a layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic self-assembly method. The fabricated TCFMI pH sensor has different transmission dip wavelengths under different pH values and shows high sensitivities of 0.6 nm/pH unit and −0.85 nm/pH unit for acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively, and short response time of 30–50 s. The LbL electrostatic self-assembly process of a PEC/PDDA multilayer is traced by quartz crystal microbalance and shows a fast thickness growth. Atomic force microscopy shows the root mean square (RMS) surface roughness of electrostatic self-assembly nanocoating of polyelectrolyte complex/polyelectrolyte is much higher than that of polyelectrolyte/polyelectrolyte due to the larger size of PEC colloidal nanoparticles. The enhanced RMS surface roughness and thickness of the nanocoating can shorten the response time and raise the sensitivity of the TCFMI pH sensor, respectively. In addition, the TCFMI pH sensor has highly reversible performance and good durability.  相似文献

Graphene/azo polyelectrolyte multilayer films were fabricated through electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly, and their performance as electrochemical capacitor electrode was investigated. Cationic azo polyelectrolyte (QP4VP-co-PCN) was synthesized through radical polymerization, postpolymerization azo coupling reaction, and quaternization. Negatively charged graphene nanosheets were prepared by a chemically modified method. The LbL films were obtained by alternately dipping a piece of the pretreated substrates in the QP4VP-co-PCN and nanosheet solutions. The processes were repeated until the films with required numbers of bilayers were obtained. The self-assembly and multilayer surface morphology were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, AFM, SEM, and TEM. The performance of the LbL films as electrochemical capacitor electrode was estimated using cyclic voltammetry. Results show that the graphene nanosheets are densely packed in the multilayers and form random graphene network. The azo polyelectrolyte cohesively interacts with the nanosheets in the multilayer structure, which prevents agglomeration of graphene nanosheets. The sheet resistance of the LbL films decreases with the increase of the layer numbers and reaches the stationary value of 1.0 × 10(6) Ω/square for the film with 15 bilayers. At a scanning rate of 50 mV/s, the LbL film with 9 bilayers shows a gravimetric specific capacitance of 49 F/g in 1.0 M Na(2)SO(4) solution. The LbL films developed in this work could be a promising type of the electrode materials for electric energy storage devices.  相似文献

Ultrathin, perforated, and freely suspended membranes with uniform nanopores in the range of tens of nanometers have been fabricated using a fast, simple method of spin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly on hydrophobic substrates. Membranes with thicknesses down to 20 nm were robust enough to be released from the sacrificial substrates, transferred onto various surfaces, and suspended over microscopic openings. The nanopore size can be controlled by tuning the number of polyelectrolyte bilayers, spinning speed, and a proper selection of hydrophobic substrates. We demonstrate that the formation of nanopores is caused by the partial dewetting of polyelectrolyte layers in the course of their deposition on the underlying hydrophobic surfaces. The nanoscale thickness of perforated membranes with relatively uniform size and a high concentration of nanopores provides perspectives for higher rates of transport through freely suspended LbL membranes. The highly perforated LbL membranes introduced here can serve as a novel platform for ultrafine separation considering an intriguing combination of nanopores, nanoscale membrane thickness, and easy functionalization.  相似文献

In this letter, we have developed a facile method to enhance the stability of polyelectrolyte multilayers. We fabricate conventional polyelectrolyte multilayers of PAH/PAA through electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly and then postinfiltrate photosensitive cross-linking agent 4,4'-diazostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid disodium salt into the LbL films. After cross-linking by UV irradiation, the stability of the photo-cross-linked multilayer is highly improved as evidenced by the lack of dissolution under ultrasonication in saturated SDS aqueous solutions for 10 min. Moreover, by taking advantage of the different stability of the LbL film before and after UV irradiation, a patterned surface can be achieved.  相似文献

Broad-band superhydrophobic antireflective (AR) coatings in near infrared (NIR) region were readily fabricated on silicon or quartz substrates by a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. First, a porous poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA)/SiO2 nanoparticle multilayer coating with AR property was prepared by LbL deposition of PDDA and 200 nm SiO2 nanoparticles. PDDA was then alternately assembled with sodium silicate on the PDDA/SiO2 nanoparticle coating to prepare a two-level hierarchical surface. Superhydrophobic AR coating with a water contact angle of 154 degrees was finally obtained after chemical vapor deposition of a layer of fluoroalkylsilane on the hierarchical surface. Quartz substrate with the as-fabricated superhydrophobic AR coating has a maximal transmittance above 98% of incidence light in the NIR region, which is increased by five percent compared with bare quartz substrate. Simultaneously, the superhydrophobic property endows the AR coating with water-repellent ability. Such superhydrophobic AR coatings can effectively avoid the disturbance of water vapor on their AR property and are expected to be applicable under humid environments.  相似文献

We report a facile means to achieve planarization of nonflat or patterned surfaces by utilizing the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of highly diffusive polyelectrolytes. The polyelectrolyte pair of linear polyethylenimine (LPEI) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) is known to maintain intrinsic diffusive mobility atop or even inside ionically complexed films prepared by LbL deposition. Under highly hydrated and swollen conditions during the sequential film buildup process, the LbL-assembled film of LPEI/PAA undergoes a topological self-deformation for minimizing surface area to satisfy the minimum-energy state of the surface, which eventually induces surface planarization along with spontaneous filling of surface textures or nonflat structures. This result is clearly different from other cases of applying nondiffusive polyelectrolytes onto patterned surfaces or confined structures, wherein surface roughening or incomplete filling is developed with the LbL assembly. Therefore, the approach proposed in this study can readily allow for surface planarization with the deposition of a relatively thin layer of polyelectrolyte multilayers. In addition, this strategy of planarization was extended to the surface modification of an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate, where surface smoothing and enhanced optical transmittance were obtained without sacrificing the electronic conductivity. Furthermore, we investigated the potential applicability of surface-treated ITO substrates as photoelectrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells prepared at room temperature. As a result, an enhanced photoconversion efficiency and improved device characteristics were obtained because of the synergistic role of polyelectrolyte deposition in improving the optical properties and acting as a blocking layer to prevent electron recombination with the electrolytes.  相似文献

Hollow structures show both light scattering and light trapping, which makes them promising for dye‐sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications. In this work, nanoparticulate hollow TiO2 fibers are prepared by layer‐by‐layer (LbL) self‐assembly deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles on natural cellulose fibers as template, followed by thermal removal of the template. The effect of LbL parameters such as the type and molecular weight of polyelectrolyte, number of dip cycles, and the TiO2 dispersion (amorphous or crystalline sol) are investigated. LbL deposition with weak polyelectrolytes (polyethylenimine, PEI) gives greater nanoparticle deposition yield compared to strong polyelectrolytes (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDDA). Decreasing the molecular weight of the polyelectrolyte results in more deposition of nanoparticles in each dip cycle with narrower pore size distribution. Fibers prepared by the deposition of crystalline TiO2 nanoparticles show higher surface area and higher pore volume than amorphous nanoparticles. Scattering coefficients and backscattering properties of fibers are investigated and compared with those of commercial P25 nanoparticles. Composite P25–fiber films are electrophoretically deposited and employed as the photoanode in DSSC. Photoelectrochemical measurements showed an increase of around 50 % in conversion efficiency. By employing the intensity‐modulated photovoltage and photocurrent spectroscopy methods, it is shown that the performance improvement due to addition of fibers is mostly due to the increase in light‐harvesting efficiency. The high surface area due to the nanoparticulate structure and strong light harvesting due to the hollow structure make these fibers promising scatterers in DSSCs.  相似文献

The layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of salt-containing nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) with oppositely charged uncomplexed polyelectrolyte for the fabrication of dewetting-induced porous polymeric films has been systematically investigated. Salt-containing poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) complexes (noted as PAH-PAA) with a molar excess of PAH were LbL assembled with polyanion poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) to produce PSS/PAH-PAA films. The structure of the PAH-PAA complexes is dependent on the concentration of NaCl added to their aqueous dispersions, which can be used to tailor the structure of the LbL-assembled PSS/PAH-PAA films. Porous PSS/PAH-PAA films are fabricated when salt-containing PAH-PAA complexes with a large amount of added NaCl are used for LbL assembly with PSS. In-situ and ex-situ atomic force microscopy measurements disclose that the dewetting process composed of pore nucleation and pore growth steps leads to the formation of pores in the LbL-assembled PSS/PAH-PAA films. The present study provides a facile way to fabricate porous polymeric films by dewetting LbL-assembled polymeric films comprising salt-containing PECs.  相似文献

In the past studies, electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes has proven to be a promising method for the preparation of polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes (PEMMs). Till now, this method was mainly used to assemble flat sheet and tubular membranes. Since hollow fiber membrane has some advantages such as high-packing density, self-contained mechanical support and hence the consequent economical superiority, this study therefore seeked to assemble inner skin hollow fiber PEMMs by using a dynamic LbL adsorption technique. The assembly process was successfully accomplished by alternatively dynamically filtrating polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) on a hydrolyzed hollow fiber polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane under a negative pressure condition. In the case of pervaporation separation of 95 wt.% ethanol–water mixture (50 °C), the membrane obtained with only 4.5 and 6.5 bilayers had separation factor of 245 and 1338 while the permeate fluxes were 290 and 120 g/(m2 h), respectively. The pervaporation separation behavior of various alcohol/water mixtures with the alcohols being t-butanol, 2-propanol and ethanol were also investigated. Finally, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy clearly confirms a uniform and defect-free layer formed on the inner surface of hollow fiber support. Since different polyelectrolyte pairs could be used to assemble PEMMs for different uses, it was expected that the dynamic negative pressure LbL adsorption technique could also potentially be used to prepare many types of PEMMs in other fields.  相似文献

The formation of lipid bilayers, lifted from the solid substrate by layer-by-layer polyion cushions, on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold was investigated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). The polyions poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) sodium salt were used for the layer-by-layer polyion macromolecular assembly. The cushion was formed by electrostatic interaction of PDDA/PSS/PDDA layers with a negatively charged surface of an SAM of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) on gold. The lipid bilayer membranes were deposited by vesicle fusion with different compositions of SOPS (an anionic lipid, 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-phosphatidylserine) and POPC (a zwitterionic lipid, 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylcholine). In the case of pure SOPS and for lipid mixtures with a POPC composition up to 25%, single bilayers were deposited. FRAP experiments showed that single bilayers supported on PDDA/PSS/PDDA/MUA were mobile at room temperature, with lateral coefficients of approximately (1.2–2.1)×10−9 cm2/s. The kinetics of the addition of the ion-channel-forming peptide protegrin-1 to the supported bilayers was detected by SPR. A two-step interaction was observed, similar to the association behavior of protegrin-1 with bilayers supported on PDDA/MUA. The results are similar to that of supported lipid bilayers without a layer-by-layer cushion. The model membrane system in this work is a potential biosensor for mimicking the natural activities of biomolecules and is a possible tool to investigate the fundamental properties of biomembranes.  相似文献

The paper is concerned with the deposition of self-assembled polyelectrolyte multilayer on Nafion membrane by layer-by-layer (LbL) technique with lowered methanol cross-over for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications. The formation of self-assembled multilayered film on Nafion was characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and it was found that the polyelectrolyte layers growth on the Nafion surface regularly. Furthermore, the proton conductivity and methanol cross-over measurements were carried out for characterization of the LbL self-assembled composite membranes. The results showed that the concentration and pH of the polyelectrolytes significantly affect the proton conductivity and methanol barrier properties of the composite membranes. 10−1 monomol polyelectrolyte concentration and pH 1.8 was found to be optimum deposition conditions considering proton conductivity and methanol permeation properties of the LbL self-assembled composite membranes. The methanol permeability of the 10 bi-layers of PAH1.8/PSS1.8 deposited LbL self-assembly composite membrane was significantly suppressed and found to be 4.41 × 10−7 cm2/s while the proton conductivity value is in acceptable range for fuel cell applications.  相似文献

Multifunctional polyelectrolyte (or layer‐by‐layer, LbL) multilayers consisting of a set of nanocompartments separated by impermeable ultrathin barriers, whereby the thickness of the compartments is tuned in the range 1–10 nm, are synthesized. Each compartment contains a different dye, introduced by co‐adsorption during multilayer deposition. Different LbL barriers are tested for impermeability towards dye diffusion while simultaneously allowing energy transfer to occur between the compartmentalized dyes. Cross‐linked LbL multilayers based on poly(acrylic acid) and poly(allyl amine) are shown to provide the desired impermeability for thicknesses as small as about 2.5 nm. A proof‐of‐concept system is then realized involving a cascade of two FRET processes, whereby the light energy is collected in a first nanocompartment containing pyranine, sent to a second nanocompartment loaded with fluorescein, before finally being transferred to a third, Nile blue‐filled compartment located at the external surface of the film. This demonstrates the possibility to fabricate complex light‐harvesting antenna systems by LbL assembly while controlling the architecture of the antenna down to a few nanometers.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte multilayer films adsorbed on gold surfaces were studied by combined ellipsometric and electrochemical methods. Multilayers were composed of “synthetic” (poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) ammonium salt (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) (PSS/PAH)) and “semi-natural” (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CHI) (CMC/CHI)) polyelectrolytes. It was found that only PSS/PAH Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembled structures result in dense surface confined films that limit permeability of small molecules, such as ferri-/ferrocyanide. The PSS/PAH assemblies can be envisaged as films with pinholes, through which small molecules diffuse. During the LbL deposition process of these films a number of pinholes quickly decay. A representative pinhole diameter was found to be approximately 20 μm, which determines the diffusion of small molecules through LbL films, and yet remains constant when the film consists of a few LbL assembled polyelectrolyte bilayers. CMC/CHI LbL assemblies at gold electrode surfaces give very low density films, which do not limit the diffusion of ferri-/ferrocyanide between the surface of the electrode and the solution.  相似文献
