The aggregation properties of cationic gemini surfactants alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide), [C(12)H(25)(CH(3))(2)N(CH(2))(m)(CF(2))(n)(CH(2))(m))N(CH(3))(2)C(12)H(25)]Br(2) [where 2m + n = 12 and n = 0, 4, and 6; designated as 12-12-12, 12-12(C(4)(F))-12, and 12-12(C(6)(F))-12, respectively] have been studied by microcalorimetry, time-resolved fluorescence quenching, and electrical conductivity. Compared with a fully hydrocarbon spacer of 12-12-12, the fluorinated spacer with a lower ratio of CF(2) to CH(2) in 12-12(C(4)(F))-12 tends to disfavor the aggregation, leading to larger critical micelle concentration (cmc), lower micelle aggregation number (N), and less negative Gibbs free energy of micellization (DeltaG(mic)). However, the fluorinated spacer with a higher ratio of CF(2) to CH(2) in 12-12(C(6)(F))-12 may prompt the aggregation, resulting in lower cmc, higher N, and more negative DeltaG(mic). It is also noted that enthalpy change of micellization (DeltaH(mic)) for 12-12(C(4)(F))-12 is the most exothermic, but the values of DeltaH(mic) for 12-12-12 and 12-12(C(6)(F))-12 are almost the same. These results are rationalized in terms of competition among the enhanced hydrophobicity and the rigidity of the fluorinated spacer, and the variation of immiscibility of the fluorinated spacer with the hydrocarbon side chains.  相似文献

A series of anionic sulfonate gemini surfactants with the general structure of [(Cn H2n+1)(C3H6SO(-)3) NCsN(C3H6SO(-)3)(CnH2n+1)].2Na+ have been synthesized. While the spacer group Cs represents p-xylyl or (CH2)3, the surfactants are abbreviated as CnCpxCn(SO3)2 (n=8,10,12) or C12C3C12(SO3)2(n=12), respectively. A corresponding monomeric surfactant C12H25N(CH3)(C3H6SO(-)3).Na+(C12NSO3) has also been prepared. The aggregation behavior of these surfactants has been studied at pH 9.2 and ionic strength of 30 mM. The gemini surfactants exhibit stronger aggregation tendencies and much less endothermic enthalpy changes of micellization (DeltaH mic) compared with the monomeric surfactant. The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) of the gemini surfactants decrease with the increase of the hydrophobic chain length from C8CpxC8(SO3)2 to C10CpxC10(SO3)2, but the CMC values of C10CpxC10(SO3)2 and C12CpxC12(SO3)2 are very close. The DeltaH mic values vary from endothermic for C8CpxC8(SO3)2 to almost zero for C12CpxC12(SO3)2. Besides, vesicles are observed above the CMC for all these surfactants. The water-mediated intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the tertiary nitrogen groups may assist C12NSO3 and C12C3C12(SO3)2 in their vesicle formation, while the pi-pi interaction between aromatic rings should be another additional driving force for the vesicle formation of CnCpxCn(SO3)2. Meanwhile, the hydrogen bonding, pi-pi interaction, and strong hydrophobic interaction provide the possibility of a multilayer formation for C12CpxC12(SO3)2 and C12C3C12(SO3)2 at the air/water interface, which is a possible reason for the extremely small minimum area occupied per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface for these two gemini surfactants.  相似文献

Both thermodynamic and microenvironmental properties of the micelles for a series of cationic surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium (C16TAX) with different counterions, F-, Cl-, Br-, NO3-, and (1/2)SO4(2-), have been studied. Critical micelle concentration (CMC), degree of micelle ionization (alpha), and enthalpy of micellization (DeltaH(mic)) have been obtained by conductivity measurements and isothermal titration microcalorimetry. Both the CMC and the alpha increase in the order SO4(2-) < NO3- < Br- < Cl- < F-, consistent with a decrease in binding of counterion, except for the divalent anion sulfate. DeltaH(mic) becomes less negative through the sequence NO3- < Br- < Cl- < F- < SO4(2-), and even becomes positive for the divalent sulfate. The special behavior of sulfate is associated with both its divalency and its degree of dehydration. Gibbs free energies of micellization (DeltaG(mic)) and entropies of micellization (DeltaS(mic)) have been calculated from the values of DeltaH(mic), CMC, and alpha and can be rationalized in terms of the Hofmeister series. The variations in DeltaH(mic) and DeltaS(mic) have been compared with those for the corresponding series of gemini surfactants. Electron spin resonance has been used to assess the micropolarity and the microviscosity of the micelles. The results show that the microenvironment of the spin probe in the C16TAX surfactant micelles depends strongly on the binding of the counterion.

The adsorption of six symmetrical cationic (dimethylammonium bromide) gemini surfactants with four different partially fluorinated chains at three different surfaces--the air/water, the hydrophilic silica/water, and the hydrophobic (octadecyltricholorosilane (OTS))/water--has been investigated by neutron reflectometry. The corresponding single chain trimethylammonium bromides have also been studied at the two solid surfaces. Four of the geminis with a C(6) spacer and chains with differing amounts of fluorocarbon have identical limiting areas per molecule at the air/water interface (106 ± 5 ?(2)). This is similar to the value for the corresponding hydrocarbon gemini with a C(6) spacer and C(12) side chains, but unlike the hydrocarbon gemini, it is significantly more than twice the area per molecule of the corresponding single chain cationic. In adsorbed aggregates on hydrophilic silica the area per molecule decreases from the air/water value by an average of about 25%, indicating a substantial improvement in the packing of these geminis in the aggregate, which can be attributed to the stronger interaction between the hydrophobic chains in the interior of the aggregates. On the hydrophobic OTS surface the area per molecule in the adsorbed monolayer for three partially fluorinated geminis decreased by about 15% from the air/water value, again indicating much more favorable packing next to the hydrophobic OTS, but for one of the geminis, fC(8)C(6)-C(6)-C(6)fC(8), the change in area was reversed. This reversal is accompanied by a marked thinning of the layer, which is attributed to a shift in the balance between the interactions of the hydrocarbon spacer and fluorocarbon chain fragments and the OTS surface.  相似文献

The micellization process of a series of dissymmetric cationic gemini surfactants [CmH2m+1(CH3)2N(CH2)6N(CH3)2C6H13]Br2 (designated as m-6-6 with m = 12, 14, and 16) and their interaction with dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles have been investigated. In the micellization process of these gemini surfactants themselves, critical micelle concentration (cmc), micelle ionization degree, and enthalpies of micellization (DeltaHmic) were determined, from which Gibbs free energies of micellization (DeltaGmic) and entropy of micellization (DeltaSmic) were derived. These properties were found to be influenced significantly by the dissymmetry in the surfactant structures. The phase diagrams for the solubilization of DMPC vesicles by the gemini surfactants were constructed from calorimetric results combining with the results of turbidity and dynamic light scattering. The effective surfactant to lipid ratios in the mixed aggregates at saturation (Resat) and solubilization (Resol) were derived. For the solubilization of DMPC vesicles, symmetric 12-6-12 is more effective than corresponding single-chain surfactant DTAB, whereas the dissymmetric m-6-6 series are more effective than symmetric 12-6-12, and 16-6-6 is the most effective. The chain length mismatch between DMPC and the gemini surfactants may be responsible for the different Re values. The transfer enthalpy per mole of surfactant within the coexistence range may be associated with the total hydrophobicity of the alkyl chains of gemini surfactants. The transfer enthalpies of surfactant from micelles to bilayers are always endothermic due to the dehydration of headgroups and the disordering of lipid acyl chain packing during the vesicle solubilization.  相似文献

Synthesis and properties of cationic oligomeric surfactants   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Three series of new oligomeric cationic surfactants were synthesized. These amphiphiles are trimeric and tetrameric oligomeric quaternary ammonium chlorides, with spacer groups of different lengths separating the individual surfactant fragments. The properties of the compounds, such as Krafft temperatures, surface activity, micellization, viscosifying effects, foaming and solubilizing capacity, are studied. The influence of the degree of oligomerization and of the spacer group on the surfactant properties is discussed, in comparison with the analogous standard monomeric and dimeric ("gemini") surfactants. Typically, the evolution of the properties observed from standard to dimeric surfactants progresses with the trimers and tetramers, resulting for instance in extremely low critical micellization concentrations.  相似文献

New gemini surfactants having two fluorocarbon chains were prepared by refluxing partially fluorinated alkyl bromide with N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,6-diaminohexane in acetonitrile. The partially fluorinated gemini surfactants containing a six-methylene spacer chain are easily soluble in water. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc's) were determined by various fluorescent probe methods. The hydrophobicity of a CF2 group was estimated to be 1.5 times that of a CH2 group according to the cmc values. The micelle micropolarity of a fluorocarbon gemini sensed by pyrene fluorescence was unusually high, suggesting an apparent iceberg-like environment in the location of pyrene. The significantly small micelle aggregation numbers of fluorinated gemini surfactants were ascertained by the pyrene fluorescence quenching method. The micelle ionization degree estimated by fluorescence quenching of 6-methoxy-N-(3-sulfopropyl)quinolinium (SPQ) gave tendencies similar to those of the corresponding hydrocarbon geminis.  相似文献

A series of novel gemini cationic surfactants alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis (hydroxyethylmethylhexadecylammonium bromide) with polymethylene spacer chain length of 4, 6, 8, and 10 carbon atoms was synthesized and characterized. Critical micellar concentrations of the gemini surfactants in aqueous solutions as determined by the surface tension and conductance measurements were observed to be in the range 1.39-3.63 microM. The critical micellar concentration was observed to increase initially with spacer length up to 6 methylene groups and to decrease thereafter with the increase in spacer length. The micellar microstructure in aqueous solutions examined through small angle neutron scattering (SANS) revealed that the extent of aggregation growth and variation in shapes of micelles strongly depend on head group polarity, spacer chain length, and temperature. The propensity to micellar growth with spacer chain length 4 was found to be much higher than with the longer spacer lengths. The fractional charge on the micelle increases with increased spacer chain length and temperature.  相似文献

Two cationic gemini surfactants having ester bonds between the hydrophobic tail and the cationic moiety have been synthesized. The ester bonds were either with the ester carbonyl group away from the positive charge (esterquat type arrangement) or facing the positive charge (betaine ester type arrangement). The chemical hydrolysis of the surfactants was investigated and compared with the hydrolysis of the corresponding monomeric surfactants. The betaine ester type of surfactants was found to hydrolyze much faster than the esterquat surfactants. It was also seen that above the critical micelle concentration the gemini surfactants were much more susceptible to alkaline hydrolysis than the corresponding monomeric surfactants. The biodegradation of the geminis and the monomeric surfactants were also studied. It was found that whereas the monomeric surfactants were rapidly degraded, the two gemini surfactants were more resistant to biodegradation and could not be classified as readily biodegradable. The 60% biodegradation was reached after 35-40 days. Thus, there was no correlation between rate of chemical hydrolysis and rate of biodegradation.  相似文献

The aggregation behavior of cationic gemini surfactants with respect to variation in head group polarity and spacer length is studied through conductance, surface tension, viscosity, and small-angle neutron-scattering (SANS) measurements. The critical micellar concentration (cmc), average degree of micelle ionization (beta(ave)), minimum area per molecule of surfactant at the air-water interface (A(min)), surface excess concentration (gamma(max)), and Gibb's free energy of micellization (delta G(mic)) of the surfactants were determined from conductance and surface tension data. The aggregation numbers (N), dimensions of micelles (b/a), effective fractional charge per monomer (alpha), and hydration of micelles (h(E)) were determined from SANS and viscosity data, respectively. The increasing head group polarity of gemini surfactant with spacer chain length of 4 methylene units promotes micellar growth, leading to a decrease in cmc, beta(ave), and delta G(mic) and an increase in N and b/a. This is well supported by the observed increase in hydration (h(E)) of micelles with increase in aggregation number (N) and dimension (b/a) of micelle.  相似文献

The equilibrium and dynamic surface tension properties of a partially fluorinated quaternary ammonium salt gemini surfactant 1,2-bis[dimethyl-(3-perfluoroalkyl-2-hydroxypropyl)ammonium]ethane bromide (C(n)(F)C3-2-C3C(n)F, where n represents fluorocarbon chain lengths of 4, 6, and 8) were investigated, and the effects of the fluorocarbon chain length and the number of chains on them were discussed. The plot of the logarithm of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) against the fluorocarbon chain length for C(n)(F)C3-2-C3C(n)F showed a linear decrease with an increase in chain length. On the basis of the slope of this plot, it was found that the variation in cmc with respect to the chain length is large for fluorinated gemini surfactants. The surface tension at the cmc decreased significantly; this surface tension value is lower than that of conventional fluorinated monomeric surfactants. In particular, the lowest value was 13.7 mN m(-1) for n = 8. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the kinetics of adsorption at the interface decrease with an increase in the fluorocarbon chain length and the concentration.  相似文献

Synthesis and properties of a novel class of gemini pyridinium surfactants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A novel class of gemini pyridinium surfactants with a four-methylene spacer group was synthesized, and their surface-active properties and interactions with polyacrylamide (PAM) were evaluated by surface tension, fluorescence, and viscosity measurements. A comparison between the gemini pyridinium surfactants and their corresponding monomers was also made. The cmc's of gemini pyridinium surfactants are much lower than those of the corresponding monomeric surfactants. The C20 value is about one order of magnitude lower than that of corresponding monomers, and the longer the hydrophobic chains of the surfactants, the lower the cmc value. Surface tension measurements of the surfactant-PAM mixed systems show that the critical aggregation concentration (cac) value is much lower than the cmc value of the surfactant system alone. Viscosity measurements of the surfactant-PAM mixed systems show that the relative viscosity of the surfactant-PAM system decreased with increasing concentration of surfactant. Additionally, fluorescence measurements of the surfactant-PAM mixed system suggest the formation of surfactant-polymer aggregates, and the gemini pyridinium surfactant with longer hydrophobic chains have a stronger interaction with PAM, owing to the stronger hydrophobic interaction.  相似文献

Steady-state fluorescence, time-resolved fluorescence quenching, and isothermal titration microcalorimetry have been used to study the interactions of cationic gemini surfactants alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (C(12)C(S)C(12)Br(2), S = 3, 6, and 12) with hydrophobically modified poly(acrylamide) (HMPAM) and unmodified poly(acrylamide) (PAM). Without addition of gemini surfactant, 0.2 wt % HMPAMs except PAM have already self-aggregated into hydrophobic aggregates. Different from single-chain surfactants, C(12)C(S)C(12)Br(2) have stronger interactions with HMPAMs to form surfactant/polymer aggregates, even with PAM. Addition of C(12)C(S)C(12)Br(2) may cause the disruption of HMPAM hydrophobic aggregates and the formation of mixed micelles. It is found that HMPAMs generate lower micropolarity of mixed micelles, larger values of enthalpy of interaction (DeltaH(ps)), and nearly constant values of Gibbs free energy of interaction (DeltaG(ps)). On the other hand, C(12)C(S)C(12)Br(2) with longer spacer brings out slightly lower micropolarity of mixed micelles, owing to the lower electrostatic repulsion between surfactant headgroups. Especially for C(12)C(12)C(12)Br(2), the values of DeltaH(ps) are much more endothermic and the values of DeltaG(ps) are much less negative. The weaker interactions of C(12)C(12)C(12)Br(2) with HMPAMs arise from the marked reduction of attraction between surfactant headgroups and polymer hydrophilic groups induced by its longer spacer.  相似文献

Spacer effects in dimeric cationic surfactants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A series of dimeric cationic surfactants (gemini surfactants), which have spacer groups of varying length and flexibility, was synthesized. The series is derived from the parent compounds dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride or benzyldodecyldimethylammonium chloride. Characteristic surfactant properties of the dimeric ammonium compounds such as surface activity, micellization, viscosity effects, foaming, and solubilization, were studied with respect to the influence of the spacer group on the surfactant. For all properties, the influence of the length of the spacer group was predominant though the chemical nature of the spacer cannot be neglected.  相似文献

The enthalpies of dilution of micellar solutions of several 12-s-12 dimeric surfactants of the alkanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dodecyldi-methylammonium bromide) type, differing by the carbon number s of the alkanediyl spacer, and of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) have been measured calorimetrically, in a range of concentrations extending from well below to well above the critical micelle concentration (cmc). The results permitted the determination of the enthalpy of micellization, DeltaH degrees (M), of the investigated surfactants at 25 and 35 degrees C. The values of DeltaH degrees (M) were always negative and became more negative as the temperature was increased. The plot of -DeltaH degrees (M) against s showed a shallow minimum at about s=5 and a large decrease of -DeltaH degrees (M) going from 12-2-12 to 12- 4-12. This effect has been attributed to the contribution to DeltaH degrees (M) of the hindered rotation of the dodecyl chains around the spacer C-C bond for 12-2-12. This hindrance is shown to rapidly disappear when s is increased from 2 to above 4. The specific heats of micellization, the free energies of micellization, and the entropies of micellization (DeltaS degrees (M)) have been calculated using the DeltaH degrees (M) values and the reported cmc and micelle ionization degree data for 12-s-12 surfactants and DTAB. For all surfactants the results show that TDeltaS degrees (M)>-DeltaH degrees (M), indicating an entropy-driven micellization.  相似文献

The efficient synthesis and surface properties of new fluorinated gemini surfactants are described. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the molecular structure and the Langmuir layer properties of these fluorinated gemini lipids. The electrostatic ssDNA binding interactions of amino groups included on the spacer were also investigated. The synthesis corresponds to the substitution of vinyl fluorine atom of fluoro-unsaturated esters by a diethylene-oxide diamine via a Michael addition followed by a fluoride elimination reaction. For the spread layers, the measurements of surface pressure versus molecular area were performed with or without ssDNA in the subphase. The monolayers characteristics depend on the hydrophobic chain length, the polar-head, the pH of the subphase and the flexibility of the spacer. The introduction of ssDNA in the subphase seems to show a low interaction between the surfactants and the oligonucleotide.  相似文献

Novel star-shaped trimeric surfactants consisting of three quaternary ammonium surfactants linked to a tris(2-aminoethyl)amine core were synthesized. Each ammonium had two methyls and a straight alkyl chain of 8, 10, 12, or 14 carbons. The adsorption and aggregation properties of these tris(N-alkyl-N,N-dimethyl-2-ammoniumethyl)amine bromides (3C(n)trisQ, in which n represents alkyl chain carbon number) were characterized by equilibrium and dynamic surface tension, rheology, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) techniques. 3C(n)trisQ showed critical micelle concentrations (CMC) 1 order of magnitude lower than that of the corresponding gemini surfactants with an ethylene spacer and the corresponding monomeric surfactants. The logarithm of the CMC decreased linearly with increasing hydrocarbon chain length for 3C(n)trisQ. The slope of the line, which is well-known as Klevens equation, was larger than those of the monomeric and gemini surfactants; however, considering the total carbon number in the chains, the slope was shallower than the monomeric and was close to the gemini. Through the results such as surface tensions at the CMC (32-34 mN m(-1)) and the parameters of standard free energy, CMC/C(20) and pC(20), it was found that 3C(n)trisQ could adsorb densely at the air/water interface despite the strong electrostatic repulsion between multiple quaternary ammonium headgroups. Moreover, dynamic surface tension measurements showed that the kinetics of adsorption for 3C(n)trisQ to the air/water interface was slow because of their bulky structures. Furthermore, the results of rheology, SANS, and cryo-TEM determined that 3C(n)trisQ with n = 10 and 12 formed ellipsoidal micelles at low concentrations in solution and the structures transformed to threadlike micelles with very few branches for n = 12 as the concentration increased, but for n = 14 threadlike micelles formed at relatively low concentrations.  相似文献

The enthalpies of micellization of the surfactant series benzyl(2-acylaminoethyl)dimethylammonium chlorides, RABzMe(2)Cl, have been determined by calorimetry and conductivity measurements in the temperature range 15-75 degrees C. Here R stands for an acyl group containing 10-16 carbon atoms and A, Bz, and Me stand for NH(CH(2))(2)N(+), benzyl, and methyl groups, respectively. The enthalpy of micellization, DeltaH(mic) degrees , and the critical micelle concentration, cmc, were calculated directly from calorimetric data. The free energy of micellization, DeltaG(mic) degrees , was obtained from the cmc and the conductance-based degree of counterion dissociation. There is an excellent agreement between DeltaG(mic) degrees calculated from the data of both techniques, but the DeltaH(mic) degrees , the entropy of micellization, values differ. The dependence of the thermodynamic parameters of micellization on the chain length of the hydrophobic group and on the temperature has been analyzed by considering the delicate balance between the factors that contribute to micelle formation, including transfer of the surfactant hydrocarbon chain from the aqueous environment to the micelle, with concomitant release of the solvating water molecules, and the effect of temperature on the structure of water. DeltaG(mic) degrees is more negative, that is, more favorable for RABzMe(2)Cl than for the structurally related alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides. This is attributed to direct and water-mediated H bonding between the amide groups of molecules of the former series.  相似文献

Solubilization of two different types of organic dyes, Quinizarin with an anthraquinone structure and Sudan I with an azo structure, has been studied in aqueous solutions of a series of cationic gemini surfactants and of a conventional monomeric cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). Surfactant concentrations both above and below the critical micelle concentration were used. The concentration of solubilized dye at equilibrium was determined from the absorbance of the solution at λ(max) with the aid of a calibration curve. The solubilization power of the gemini surfactants was higher than that of DTAB and increased with increasing alkyl chain length. An increase in length of the spacer unit resulted in increased solubilization power while a hydroxyl group in the spacer did not have much effect. Ester bonds in the alkyl chains reduced the solubilization power with respect to both dyes. A comparison between the absorbance spectra of the dyes in micellar solution with spectra in a range of solvents of different polarity indicated that the dye is situated in a relatively polar environment. One may therefore assume that the dye is located just below the head group region of the micelle. Attractive π-cation interactions may play a role for orienting the dye to the outer region of the micelle.  相似文献
