We study self-similar ultrametric Cantor sets arising from stationary Bratteli diagrams. We prove that such a Cantor set C is bi-Lipschitz embeddable in R[Hdim(C)]+1, where [Hdim(C)] denotes the integer part of its Hausdorff dimension. We compute this Hausdorff dimension explicitly and show that it is the abscissa of convergence of a zeta-function associated with a natural sequence of refining coverings of C (given by the Bratteli diagram). As a corollary we prove that the transversal of a (primitive) substitution tiling of Rd is bi-Lipschitz embeddable in Rd+1.We also show that C is bi-Hölder embeddable in the real line. The image of C in R turns out to be the ω-spectrum (the limit points of the set of eigenvalues) of a Laplacian on C introduced by Pearson-Bellissard via noncommutative geometry.  相似文献

Summary If there is a homeomorphic embedding of one set into another, the sets are said to be topologically comparable. Friedman and Hirst have shown that the topological comparability of countable closed subsets of the reals is equivalent to the subsystem of second order arithmetic denoted byATR 0. Here, this result is extended to countable closed locally compact subsets of arbitrary complete separable metric spaces. The extension uses an analogue of the one point compactification of .  相似文献

We allow subsequently continuous movements of single elements, whenever the minimum distance to other elements does not decrease. We discuss the question, if it is possible to move all elements of $X$ in this way, for example after removing a finite subset $Y$ from $X$. Although it is not possible in general, we show the existence of such finite subsets $Y$ for many discrete sets $X$, including all lattices. We define the \textit{instability degree} of $X$ as the minimum cardinality of such a subset $Y$ and show that the maximum instability degree among lattices is attained by perfect lattices. Moreover, we discuss the $3$-dimensional case in detail.  相似文献

In this paper we aim to investigate different questions concerning the stability of the set of all intersections of closed balls in a normed space. We are mainly concerned with: (i) the stability of under the closure of the vector sums; (ii) the stability under the addition of balls. We prove that (i) and (ii) are different properties which have strong connections with the geometry of the space. They have interest both in finite and infinite dimension. In the former case, there is a link with linear programming theory. We also study two more stability properties related to the well-known binary intersection property. Mazur sets and Mazur spaces are introduced, as a natural family satisfying (i). We prove that every two-dimensional normed space is a Mazur space, a result which distinguishes dimension d?2 from dimension d?3. We also discuss the connections between Mazur spaces and porosity.  相似文献

Say that a cardinal number κ is small relative to the space X if κ<Δ(X), where Δ(X) is the least cardinality of a non-empty open set in X. We prove that no Baire metric space can be covered by a small number of discrete sets, and give some generalizations. We show a ZFC example of a regular Baire σ-space and a consistent example of a normal Baire Moore space which can be covered by a small number of discrete sets. We finish with some remarks on linearly ordered spaces.  相似文献

The classical Remez inequality bounds the maximum of the absolute value of a polynomial P(x) of degree d on [−1, 1] through the maximum of its absolute value on any subset Z of positive measure in [−1, 1]. Similarly, in several variables the maximum of the absolute value of a polynomial P(x) of degree d on the unit cube Q 1 n ⊂ ℝ n can be bounded through the maximum of its absolute value on any subset ZQ 1 n of positive n-measure. The main result of this paper is that the n-measure in the Remez inequality can be replaced by a certain geometric invariant ω d (Z) which can be effectively estimated in terms of the metric entropy of Z and which may be nonzero for discrete and even finite sets Z.  相似文献

In this paper we study a class of countable and discrete subsets of a Euclidean space that are “self-similar” with respect to a finite set of (affine) similarities. Any such set can be interpreted as having a fractal structure. We introduce a zeta function for these sets, and derive basic analytic properties of this “fractal” zeta function. Motivating examples that come from combinatorial geometry and arithmetic are given particular attention.  相似文献

Due to its good potential for digital signal processing, discrete Gabor analysis has interested some mathematicians. This paper addresses Gabor systems on discrete periodic sets, which can model signals to appear periodically but intermittently. Complete Gabor systems and Gabor frames on discrete periodic sets are characterized; a sufficient and necessary condition on what periodic sets admit complete Gabor systems is obtained; this condition is also proved to be sufficient and necessary for the existence of sets E such that the Gabor systems generated by χ E are tight frames on these periodic sets; our proof is constructive, and all tight frames of the above form with a special frame bound can be obtained by our method; periodic sets admitting Gabor Riesz bases are characterized; some examples are also provided to illustrate the general theory. Consider the problem of finding the points of maximum of an expectation functional over a finite setS. Based on statistical estimates at each point ofS, confidence sets for theargmax-set are constructed which guarantee a prespecified probability of correct selection. We review known selection methods and propose a new two-stage procedure that works well for largeS and few global maxima. The performance is compared in a simulation study.  相似文献

In the present paper, under the continuum hypothesis, we construct an example of a discretely generated compact set X whose square is not discretely generated. For each compact set X, there is an ordinally valued characteristic idc(X), which is the least number of iterations of the d-closure generating, as a result, the closure of any original subset X. We prove that if χ(X) ≤ ω α , then idc(X) ≤ α + 1.  相似文献

It is proved that a centroaffine group G generated by a discrete G-invariant set of reflections of Euclidean space E 3 is discrete. Affine nondiscrete groups generated by reflections in E 3 but containing only discrete sets of reflections are constructed. Due to its potential applications in multiplexing techniques such as time division multiple access and frequency division multiple access, superframe has interested some mathematicians and engineering specialists. In this paper, we investigate super Gabor systems on discrete periodic sets in terms of a suitable Zak transform matrix, which can model signals to appear periodically but intermittently. Complete super Gabor systems, super Gabor frames and Gabor duals for super Gabor frames on discrete periodic sets are characterized; An explicit expression of Gabor duals is established, and the uniqueness of Gabor duals is characterized. On the other hand, discrete periodic sets admitting complete super Gabor systems, super Gabor frames, super Gabor Riesz bases are also characterized. Some examples are also provided to illustrate the general theory.  相似文献
