We studied the dynamics of gas–liquid flows in a rectangular bubble column using Eulerian–Lagrangian simulations. Three-dimensional, unsteady simulations were performed to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the oscillating bubble plume. The effect of superficial gas velocity and aerated liquid height-to-column width (H/W) ratio on the dynamic and time-averaged flow properties was studied and the simulated results were validated using wall pressure and voidage fluctuation measurements. The effect of lift force and numerical diffusion on the dynamic and time-averaged properties is discussed in detail. Further, the results obtained using the Eulerian–Lagrangian simulations were compared with the Eulerian–Eulerian simulations. The bubble scale information, which is otherwise lost in the Eulerian–Eulerian simulations, was validated using the voidage fluctuation measurements. Such experimentally validated Eulerian–Lagrangian models will be useful for the simulation of mass transfer and reactions in bubble columns.  相似文献

The comparison of two theoretical approaches for the numerical investigation of turbulent gas–solid flows with heat transfer in a pipe are presented in this paper. The first approach is based on Eulerian–Eulerian modelling of investigated phenomena, the second one is formulated within the framework of the Eulerian–Lagrangian approach. The verification of numerical models under consideration. Their testing against available experimental data show good prognostic properties of the elaborated theoretical tool for research activities to study new physical fundamentals of turbulent gas-suspended particles flows in pipes and channels.  相似文献

In order to reduce the high computational effort of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES), the present paper suggests a hybrid LES–RANS approach which splits up the simulation into a near-wall RANS part and an outer LES part. Generally, RANS is adequate for attached boundary layers requiring reasonable CPU-time and memory, where LES can also be applied but demands extremely large resources. Contrarily, RANS often fails in flows with massive separation or large-scale vortical structures. Here, LES is without a doubt the best choice. The basic concept of hybrid methods is to combine the advantages of both approaches yielding a prediction method, which, on the one hand, assures reliable results for complex turbulent flows, including large-scale flow phenomena and massive separation, but, on the other hand, consumes much fewer resources than LES, especially for high Reynolds number flows encountered in technical applications. In the present study, a non-zonal hybrid technique is considered (according to the signification retained by the authors concerning the terms zonal and non-zonal), which leads to an approach where the suitable simulation technique is chosen more or less automatically. For this purpose the hybrid approach proposed relies on a unique modeling concept. In the LES mode a subgrid-scale model based on a one-equation model for the subgrid-scale turbulent kinetic energy is applied, where the length scale is defined by the filter width. For the viscosity-affected near-wall RANS mode the one-equation model proposed by Rodi et al. (J Fluids Eng 115:196–205, 1993) is used, which is based on the wall-normal velocity fluctuations as the velocity scale and algebraic relations for the length scales. Although the idea of combined LES–RANS methods is not new, a variety of open questions still has to be answered. This includes, in particular, the demand for appropriate coupling techniques between LES and RANS, adaptive control mechanisms, and proper subgrid-scale and RANS models. Here, in addition to the study on the behavior of the suggested hybrid LES–RANS approach, special emphasis is put on the investigation of suitable interface criteria and the adjustment of the RANS model. To investigate these issues, two different test cases are considered. Besides the standard plane channel flow test case, the flow over a periodic arrangement of hills is studied in detail. This test case includes a pressure-induced flow separation and subsequent reattachment. In comparison with a wall-resolved LES prediction encouraging results are achieved.   相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the application of spectral-based methods to simulation of particle-laden turbulent flows. The primary focus of the article is on the past and ongoing works by the authors. The particles are tracked in Lagrangian framework, while direct numerical simulation (DNS) or large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to describe the carrier-phase flow field. Two different spectral methods are considered, namely Fourier pseudo-spectral method and Chebyshev multidomain spectral method. The pseudo-spectral method is used for the simulation of homogeneous turbulence. DNS of both incompressible and compressible flows with one- and two-way couplings are reported. For LES of particle-laden flows, two new models, developed by the authors, account for the effect of sub-grid fluctuations on the dispersed phase. The Chebyshev multidomain method is employed for the works on inhomogeneous flows. A number of canonical flows are discussed, including flow past a square cylinder, channel flow and flow over backward-facing step. Ongoing research on particle-laden LES of inhomogeneous flows is briefly reported.  相似文献

A modified Reynolds stress turbulence model for the pressure rate of strain can be derived for dispersed two-phase flows taking into account gas-particle interaction. The transport equations for the Reynolds stresses as well as the equation for the fluctuating pressure can be derived starting from the multiphase Navier–Stokes equations. The unknown pressure rate of strain correlation in the Reynolds stress equations is then modelled by considering the multiphase equation for the fluctuating pressure. This leads to a multiphase pressure rate of strain model. The extra particle interaction source terms occurring in the model for the pressure rate of strain can be constructed easily, with no noticeable extra computational cost. Eulerian–Lagrangian simulation results of a turbulent dispersed two-phase jet are presented to show the differences in results with and without the new two-way coupling terms.  相似文献

A Hybrid RANS/LES Simulation of Turbulent Channel Flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Hybrid models combining large eddy simulation (LES) with Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulation are expected to be useful for wall modeling in the LES of high Reynolds number flows. Some hybrid simulations of turbulent channel flow have a common defect; the mean velocity profile has a mismatch between the RANS and LES regions due to a steep velocity gradient at the interface. This mismatch is reproduced and examined using a simple hybrid model; the Smagorinsky model is switched to a RANS model increasing the filter width. It is suggested that a rapid spatial variation in the eddy viscosity is responsible for an underestimate of the grid-scale shear stress and for the steep velocity gradient. To reduce the mean velocity mismatch a new scheme is proposed; additional filtering is introduced to define two kinds of velocity components at the interface between the two regions. The two components are used to remove inconsistency in the velocity equations due to a rapid variation in the filter width. Using the new scheme, simulations of channel flow are carried out with the simple hybrid model. It is shown that the grid-scale shear stress becomes large enough and most of the mean velocity mismatch is removed. Simulations for higher Reynolds numbers are carried out with the k–ε model and the one-equation subgrid-scale model. Although it is necessary to improve the turbulence models and the treatment of the buffer region, the new scheme is shown to be effective for reducing the mismatch and to be useful for developing better hybrid simulations. A new large eddy simulation (LES) approach for particle-laden turbulent flows in the framework of the Eulerian formalism for inertial particle statistical modelling is developed. Local instantaneous Eulerian equations for the particle cloud are first written using the mesoscopic Eulerian formalism (MEF) proposed by Février et al. (J Fluid Mech 533:1–46, 2005), which accounts for the contribution of an uncorrelated velocity component for inertial particles with relaxation time larger than the Kolmogorov time scale. Second, particle LES equations are obtained by volume filtering the mesoscopic Eulerian ones. In such an approach, the particulate flow at larger scales than the filter width is recovered while sub-grid effects need to be modelled. Particle eddy-viscosity, scale similarity and mixed sub-grid stress (SGS) models derived from fluid compressible turbulence SGS models are presented. Evaluation of such models is performed using three sets of particle Lagrangian results computed from discrete particle simulation (DPS) coupled with fluid direct numerical simulation (DNS) of homogeneous isotropic decaying turbulence. The two phase flow regime corresponds to the dilute one where two-way coupling and inter-particle collisions are not considered. The different particle Stokes number (based on Kolmogorov time scale) are initially equal to 1, 2.2 and 5.1. The mesoscopic field properties are analysed in detail by considering the particle velocity probability function (PDF), correlated velocity power spectra and random uncorrelated velocity moments. The mesoscopic fields measured from DPS+DNS are then filtered to obtain large scale fields. A priori evaluation of particle sub-grid stress models gives comparable agreement than for fluid compressible turbulence models. It has been found that the standard Smagorinsky eddy-viscosity model exhibits the smaller correlation coefficients, the scale similarity model shows very good correlation coefficient but strongly underestimates the sub-grid dissipation and the mixed model is on the whole superior to pure eddy-viscosity model.  相似文献

This paper presents hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and large-eddy-simulation (LES) methods for the separated flows at high angles of attack around a 6:1 prolate spheroid. The RANS/LES hybrid methods studied in this work include the detached eddy simulation (DES) based on Spalart–Allmaras (S–A), Menter’s k–ω shear-stress-transport (SST) and k–ω with weakly nonlinear eddy viscosity formulation (Wilcox–Durbin+, WD+) models and the zonal-RANS/LES methods based on the SST and WD+ models. The switch from RANS near the wall to LES in the core flow region is smooth through the implementation of a flow-dependent blending function for the zonal hybrid method. All the hybrid methods are designed to have a RANS mode for the attached flows and have a LES behavior for the separated flows. The main objective of this paper is to apply the hybrid methods for the high Reynolds number separated flows around prolate spheroid at high-incidences. A fourth-order central scheme with fourth-order artificial viscosity is applied for spatial differencing. The fully implicit lower–upper symmetric-Gauss–Seidel with pseudo time sub-iteration is taken as the temporal differentiation. Comparisons with available measurements are carried out for pressure distribution, skin friction, and profiles of velocity, etc. Reasonable agreement with the experiments, accounting for the effect on grids and fundamental turbulence models, is obtained for the separation flows. We present an original timesaving joint RANS/LES approach to simulate turbulent premixed combustion. It is intended mainly for industrial applications where LES may not be practical. It is based on successive RANS/LES numerical modelling, where turbulent characteristics determined from RANS simulations are used in LES equations for estimation of the subgrid chemical source and viscosity. This approach has been developed using our TFC premixed combustion model, which is based on a generalization of the Kolmogorov’s ideas. We assume existence of small-scale statistically equilibrium structures not only of turbulence but also of the reaction zones. At the same time, non-equilibrium large-scale structures of reaction sheets and turbulent eddies are described statistically by model combustion and turbulence equations in RANS simulations or follow directly without modelling in LES. Assumption of small-scale equilibrium gives an opportunity to express the mean combustion rate (controlled by small-scale coupling of turbulence and chemistry) in the RANS and LES sub-problems in terms of integral or subgrid parameters of turbulence and the chemical time, i.e. the definition of the reaction rate is similar to that of the mean dissipation rate in turbulence models where it is expressed in terms of integral or subgrid turbulent parameters. Our approach therefore renders compatible the combustion and turbulent parts of the RANS and LES sub-problems and yields reasonable agreement between the RANS and averaged LES results. Combining RANS simulations of averaged fields with LES method (and especially coupled and acoustic codes) for simulation of corresponding nonstationary process (and unsteady combustion regimes) is a promising strategy for industrial applications. In this work we present results of simulations carried out employing the joint RANS/LES approach for three examples: High velocity premixed combustion in a channel, combustion in the shear flow behind an obstacle and the impinging flame (a premixed flame attached to an obstacle).  相似文献

A grid-averaged Lagrangian (GAL) model for dispersed particle motion in multiphase turbulent flow is presented to provide a large eddy simulation (LES) model for multiphase turbulent flow in which a quite large number of particles are involved. The GAL model is based on an averaging operation for a Lagrangian-type equation of motion of a particle over a computational grid volume and a procedure of reallocation of a dispersed particle cloud with its centroid movement to each grid. The model is therefore a mixed Eulerian–Lagrangian model which can effectively reduce computational time compared with existing Lagrangian-type models, without losing the advantage of Lagrangian-type models that they can properly describe the dynamical evolution of particles. Since the GAL model adopts the grid-volume averaging operation it can easily provide an effective SGS model for LES modeling of multiphase turbulent flow. The validity of the multiphase LES model developed, which is named the GAL-LES model, is confirmed through its application to a particle plume, in which the present model is found to simulate large-eddy motion usually observed in a jet and plume, and to give good agreements with experimental data.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations (LES) still suffer from extremely large resources required for the resolution of the near-wall region, especially for high-Re flows. That is the main motivation for setting up hybrid LES–RANS methods. Meanwhile a variety of different hybrid concepts were proposed mostly relying on linear eddy-viscosity models. In the present study a hybrid approach based on an explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model (EARSM) is suggested. The model is applied in the RANS mode with the aim of accounting for the Reynolds stress anisotropy emerging especially in the near-wall region. For the implementation into a CFD code this anisotropy-resolving closure can be formally expressed in terms of a non-linear eddy-viscosity model (NLEVM). Its extra computational effort is small, still requiring solely the solution of one additional transport equation for the turbulent kinetic energy. In addition to this EARSM approach, a linear eddy-viscosity model (LEVM) is used in order to verify and emphasize the advantages of the non-linear model. In the present formulation the predefinition of RANS and LES regions is avoided and a gradual transition between both methods is assured. A dynamic interface criterion is suggested which relies on the modeled turbulent kinetic energy and the wall distance and thus automatically accounts for the characteristic properties of the flow. Furthermore, an enhanced version guaranteeing a sharp interface is proposed. The interface behavior is thoroughly investigated and it is shown how the method reacts on dynamic variations of the flow field. Both model variants, i.e. LEVM and EARSM, have been tested on the basis of the standard plane channel flow and even more detailed on the flow over a periodic arrangement of hills using fine and coarse grids.  相似文献

A synthetic turbulence generation (STG) method for subsonic and supersonic flows at low and moderate Reynolds numbers to provide inflow distributions of zonal Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) – large-eddy simulation (LES) methods is presented. The STG method splits the LES inflow region into three planes where a local velocity signal is decomposed from the turbulent flow properties of the upstream RANS solution. Based on the wall-normal position and the local flow Reynolds number, specific length and velocity scales with different vorticity content are imposed at the inlet plane of the boundary layer. The quality of the STG method for incompressible and compressible zero-pressure gradient boundary layers is shown by comparing the zonal RANS–LES data with pure LES, pure RANS, and direct numerical simulation (DNS) solutions. The distributions of the time and spanwise wall-shear stress, Reynolds stress distributions, and two point correlations of the zonal RANS–LES simulations are smooth in the transition region and in good agreement with the pure LES and reference DNS findings. The STG approach reduces the RANS-to-LES transition length to less than four boundary-layer thicknesses.  相似文献

A numerical formulation for Eulerian–Lagrangian simulations of particle-laden flows in complex geometries is developed. The formulation accounts for the finite-size of the dispersed phase. Similar to the commonly used point-particle formulation, the dispersed particles are treated as point-sources, and the forces acting on the particles are modeled through drag and lift correlations. In addition to the inter-phase momentum exchange, the presence of particles affects the fluid phase continuity and momentum equations through the displaced fluid volume. Three flow configurations are considered in order to study the effect of finite particle size on the overall flowfield: (a) gravitational settling, (b) fluidization by a gaseous jet, and (c) fluidization by lift in a channel. The finite-size formulation is compared to point-particle representations, which do not account for the effect of finite-size. It is shown that the fluid displaced by the particles plays an important role in predicting the correct behavior of particle motion. The results suggest that the standard point-particle approach should be modified to account for finite particle size, in simulations of particle-laden flows.  相似文献

Towards a Unified Turbulence Simulation Approach for Wall-Bounded Flows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/Large-Eddy Simulation (RANS/LES) methodology has received considerable attention in recent years, especially in its application to wall-bounded flows at high-Reynolds numbers. In the conventional zonal hybrid approach, eddy-viscosity-type RANS and subgrid scale models are applied in the RANS and LES zones, respectively. In contrast, the non-zonal hybrid approach uses only a generalized turbulence model, which provides a unified simulation approach that spans the continuous spectrum of modeling/simulation schemes from RANS to LES. A particular realization of the non-zonal approach, known as partially resolved numerical simulation (PRNS), uses a generalized turbulence model obtained from a rescaling of a conventional RANS model through the introduction of a resolution control function F R , where F R is used to characterize the degree of modeling required to represent the unresolved scales of turbulent motion. A new generalized functional form for F R in PRNS is proposed in this study, and its performance is compared with unsteady RANS (URANS) and LES computations for attached and separated wall-bounded turbulent flows. It is demonstrated that PRNS behaves similarly to LES, but outperforms URANS in general.  相似文献

Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) of an evaporating two-phase flow in an experimental burner are investigated. Two different numerical approaches for the simulation of the dispersed phase are coupled to the same gaseous solver: a mesoscopic Eulerian method and a Lagrangian particle tracking technique. The spray is represented by a single droplet size owing to the locally monodisperse formulation of the employed mesoscopic Eulerian approach. Both approaches use the same drag and evaporation models. They do not take into account the atomization process and a simplified injection model is applied instead. The presented methodology, referred as FIM-UR (Fuel Injection Method by Upstream Reconstruction) defines injection profiles for the monodisperse spray produced by a pressure-swirl atomizer. It is designed so as to ensure similar spray characteristics for both approaches and allows for a direct comparison between them. After a validation of the purely gaseous flow in the burner, liquid-phase dynamics and droplet dispersion are qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated for the Eulerian and Lagrangian simulations. Results obtained for both approaches are in very good agreement and compare reasonably with experiments, indicating that simplified injection methods are appropriate for the simulation of realistic combustor geometries.  相似文献

The problem of wave propagation in a dust–air mixture inside a branched channel has not been studied widely in literature, even though this topic has many important applications especially in process safety (dust explosions). In this paper, a shock wave interaction with a cloud of solid particles, and the further behaviour of both gas and particulate phases were studied using numerical techniques. The geometry mimicked a real channel where bends or branches are common. Two numerical approaches were used: Eulerian–Eulerian and Eulerian–Lagrangian. Using Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation, it was possible to include the effects of particle–particle and particle–wall collisions in a realistic and direct manner. Results are mainly shown as snap-shots of particle positions during the simulations and statistics for the particle displacement. A review of existing basic turbulence modeling approaches reveals the need for the development of unified turbulence models which can be used continuously as filter density function (FDF) or probability density function (PDF) methods, large eddy simulation (LES) or Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) methods. It is then shown that such unified stochastic and deterministic turbulence models can be constructed by explaining the dependence of the characteristic time scale of velocity fluctuations on the scale considered. The unified stochastic model obtained generalizes usually applied FDF and PDF models. The unified deterministic turbulence model that is implied by the stochastic model recovers and extends well-known linear and nonlinear LES and RANS models for the subgrid-scale and Reynolds stress tensor.   相似文献

The main bottle neck for using large eddy simulations (LES) at high Reynolds number is the requirement of very fine meshes near walls. Hybrid LES-Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) was invented to get rid of this limitation. In this method, unsteady RANS (URANS) is used near walls and away from walls LES is used. The matching between URANS and LES takes place in the inner log-region. In the present paper, a method to improve standard LES-RANS is evaluated. The improvement consists of adding instantaneous turbulent fluctuations (forcing conditions) at the matching plane in order to provide the equations in the LES region with relevant turbulent structures. The fluctuations are taken from a DNS of a generic boundary layer. Simulations of fully developed channel flow and plane asymmetric diffuser flow are presented. Hybrid LES-RANS is used both with and without forcing conditions.  相似文献

An extension of the large eddy simulation (LES) technique to two-phase reacting flows, required to capture and predict the behavior of industrial burners, is presented. While most efforts reported in the literature to construct LES solvers for two-phase flow focus on Euler–Lagrange formulation, the present work explores a different solution (‘two-fluid’ approach) where an Eulerian formulation is used for the liquid phase and coupled with the LES solver of the gas phase. The equations used for each phase and the coupling terms are presented before describing validation in two simple cases which gather some of the specificities of real combustion chamber: (1) a one-dimensional laminar JP10/air flame and (2) a non-reacting swirled flow where solid particles disperse (Sommerfeld and Qiu, Int. J. Multiphase Flow 19(6):1093–1127, 1993). After these validations, the LES tool is applied to a realistic aircraft combustion chamber to study both a steady flame regime and an ignition sequence by a spark. Results bring new insights into the physics of these complex flames and demonstrate the capabilities of two-fluid LES.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation (LES) is combined with the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equation in a turbulent channel-flow calculation. A one-equation subgrid-scale model is solved in a three-dimensional grid in the near-wall region whereas the standard k–ε model is solved in a one-dimensional grid in the outer region away from the wall. The two grid systems are overlapped to connect the two models smoothly. A turbulent channel flow is calculated at Reynolds numbers higher than typical LES and several statistical quantities are examined. The mean velocity profile is in good agreement with the logarithmic law. The profile of the turbulent kinetic energy in the near-wall region is smoothly connected with that of the turbulent energy for the k–ε model in the outer region. Turbulence statistics show that the solution in the near-wall region is as accurate as a usual LES. The present approach is different from wall modeling in LES that uses a RANS model near the wall. The former is not as efficient as the latter for calculating high-Reynolds-number flows. Nevertheless, the present method of combining the two models is expected to pave the way for constructing a unified turbulence model that is useful for many purposes including wall modeling.
