In this article, we present an improved third-order finite difference weighted essentially nonoscillatory (WENO) scheme to promote the order of convergence at critical points for the hyperbolic conservation laws. The improved WENO scheme is an extension of WENO-ZQ scheme. However, the global smoothness indicator has a little different from WENO-ZQ scheme. In this follow-up article, a convex combination of a second-degree polynomial with two linear polynomials in a traditional WENO fashion is used to compute the numerical flux at cell boundary. Although the same three-point information is adopted by the improved third-order WENO scheme, the truncation errors are smaller than some other third-order WENO schemes in L and L2 norms. Especially, the convergence order is not declined at critical points, where the first and second derivatives vanish but not the third derivative. At last, the behavior of improved scheme is proved on a variety of one- and two-dimensional standard numerical examples. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme gives better performance in comparison with other third-order WENO schemes.

This article is to continue the present author's work (International Journal of Computational Fluid Dynamics (2009) 23 (9), 623–641) on studying the structure of solutions of the Riemann problem for a system of three conservation laws governing two-phase flows. While existing solutions are limited and found quite recently for the Baer and Nunziato equations, this article presents the first instance of an exact solution of the Riemann problem for two-phase flow in gas–liquid mixture. To demonstrate the structure of the solution, we use a hyperbolic conservative model with mechanical equilibrium and without velocity equilibrium. The Riemann problem solution for the model equations comprises a set of elementary waves, rarefaction and discontinuous waves of various types. In particular, such a solution treats both the wave structure and the intermediate states of the two-phase gas–liquid mixture. The resulting exact Riemann solver is fully non-linear, direct and complete. On this basis then, we use locally the exact Riemann solver for the two-phase flow in gas–liquid mixture within the framework of finite volume upwind Godunov methods. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed solver, we consider a series of test problems selected from the open literature and compare the exact and numerical results by using upwind Godunov methods, showing excellent oscillation-free results in two-phase fluid flow problems.

A local pseudo arc-length method(LPALM)for solving hyperbolic conservation laws is presented in this paper. The key idea of this method comes from the original arc-length method, through which the critical points are bypassed by transforming the computational space. The method is based on local changes of physical variables to choose the discontinuous stencil and introduce the pseudo arc-length parameter, and then transform the governing equations from physical space to arc-length space. In order to solve these equations in arc-length coordinate,it is necessary to combine the velocity of mesh points in the moving mesh method, and then convert the physical variable in arclength space back to physical space.Numerical examples have proved the effectiveness and generality of the new approach for linear equation, nonlinear equation and system of equations with discontinuous initial values.Non-oscillation solution can be obtained by adjusting the parameter and the mesh refinement number for problems containing both shock and rarefaction waves.

Based on the Lie group method, the potential symmetries and invariant solutions for generalized quasilinear hyperbolic equations are studied. To obtain the invariant solutions in an explicit form, the physically interesting situations with potential symmetries are focused on, and the conservation laws for these equations in three physically interesting cases are found by using the partial Lagrangian approach.

In this work we present an upwind‐based high resolution scheme using flux limiters. Based on the direction of flow we choose the smoothness parameter in such a way that it leads to a truly upwind scheme without losing total variation diminishing (TVD) property for hyperbolic linear systems where characteristic values can be of either sign. Here we present and justify the choice of smoothness parameters. The numerical flux function of a high resolution scheme is constructed using wave speed splitting so that it results into a scheme that truly respects the physical hyperbolicity property. Bounds are given for limiter functions to satisfy TVD property. The proposed scheme is extended for non‐linear problems by using the framework of relaxation system that converts a non‐linear conservation law into a system of linear convection equations with a non‐linear source term. The characteristic speed of relaxation system is chosen locally on three point stencil of grid. This obtained relaxation system is solved using composite scheme technique, i.e. using a combination of proposed scheme with the conservative non‐standard finite difference scheme. Presented numerical results show higher resolution near discontinuity without introducing spurious oscillations. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

One of the techniques available for optimising parameters that regulate dispersion and dissipation effects in finite difference schemes is the concept of minimised integrated exponential error for low dispersion and low dissipation. In this paper, we work essentially with the two‐dimensional (2D) Corrected Lax–Friedrichs and Lax–Friedrichs schemes applied to the 2D scalar advection equation. We examine the shock‐capturing properties of these two numerical schemes, and observe that these methods are quite effective from the point of being able to control computational noise and having a large range of stability. To improve the shock‐capturing efficiency of these two methods, we derive composite methods using the idea of predictor/corrector or a linear combination of the two schemes. The optimal cfl number for some of these composite schemes are computed. Some numerical experiments are carried out in two dimensions such as cylindrical explosion, shock‐focusing, dam‐break and Riemann gas dynamics tests. The modified equations of some of the composite schemes when applied to the 2D scalar advection equation are obtained. We also perform some convergence tests to obtain the order of accuracy and show that better results in terms of shock‐capturing property are obtained when the optimal cfl obtained using minimised integrated exponential error for low dispersion and low dissipation is used. A fourth-order relaxation scheme is derived and applied to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one and two space dimensions. The scheme is based on a fourth-order central weighted essentially nonoscillatory (CWENO) reconstruction for one-dimensional cases, which is generalized to two-dimensional cases by the dimension-by-dimension approach. The large stability domain Runge-Kutta-type solver ROCK4 is used for time integration. The resulting method requires neither the use of Riemann solvers nor the computation of Jacobians and therefore it enjoys the main advantage of the relaxation schemes. The high accuracy and high-resolution properties of the present method are demonstrated in one- and two-dimensional numerical experiments. A new algorithm based on spectral element discretizations and flux-corrected transport (FCT) ideas is developed for the solution of discontinuous hyperbolic problems. A conservative formulation is proposed, based on cell averaging and reconstruction procedures, that employs a staggered grid of Gauss–Chebyshev and Gauss–Lobatto–Chebyshev discretizations. In addition, high-order time-differencing schemes, a flux limiter and a general spectral filter are employed to improve the quality of the solution. It is demonstrated through model problems of linear advection and examples of one-dimensional shock formation that the proposed algorithm leads to stable, non-oscillatory solutions of high accuracy away from discontinuities. Typically, spectral or spectral element methods perform very poorly in the presence of even weak discontinuities, although they produce only exponentialy small errors for smooth solutions. Spectral element–FCT methods can provide spectral properties (i.e. minimum dispersion and diffusion errors) as well as great flexibility in the discretization, since a variable number of macroelements or collocation points per element can be employed to accommodate both accuracy and geometric requirements.

In this work, we present a total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme in the zero relaxation limit for nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law using flux limiters within the framework of a relaxation system that converts a nonlinear conservation law into a system of linear convection equations with nonlinear source terms. We construct a numerical flux for space discretization of the obtained relaxation system and modify the definition of the smoothness parameter depending on the direction of the flow so that the scheme obeys the physical property of hyperbolicity. The advantages of the proposed scheme are that it can give second‐order accuracy everywhere without introducing oscillations for 1‐D problems (at least with) smooth initial condition. Also, the proposed scheme is more efficient as it works for any non‐zero constant value of the flux limiter ? ? [0, 1], where other TVD schemes fail. The resulting scheme is shown to be TVD in the zero relaxation limit for 1‐D scalar equations. Bound for the limiter function is obtained. Numerical results support the theoretical results. We construct explicitly the fundamental wave manifold for systems of two conservation laws with quadratic flux functions. We describe the shock foliation for this manifold, as well as the singular set of the foliation. We subdivide the manifold into regions where the shock curves form trivial foliations. Sonic surfaces are identified as well. We establish the stability of shock curves underC 3 perturbations of the flux functions in the Whitney topology. In memoriam of Jean Martinet.

We introduce a new fourth order, semi-discrete, central-upwind scheme for solving systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. The scheme is a combination of a fourth order non-oscillatory reconstruction, a semi-discrete central-upwind numerical flux and the third order TVD Runge-Kutta method. Numerical results suggest that the new scheme achieves a uniformly high order accuracy for smooth solutions and produces non-oscillatory profiles for discontinuities. This is especially so for long time evolution problems. The scheme combines the simplicity of the central schemes and accuracy of the upwind schemes. The advantages of the new scheme will be fully realized when solving various examples.

In this paper, the maximum-principle-preserving(MPP)and positivitypreserving(PP)flux limiting technique will be generalized to a class of high-order weighted compact nonlinear schemes(WCNSs)for scalar conservation laws and the compressible Euler systems in both one and two dimensions. The main idea of the present method is to rewrite the scheme in a conservative form, and then define the local limiting parameters via case-by-case discussion.Smooth test problems are presented to demonstrate that the proposed MPP/PP WCNSs incorporating a third-order Runge-Kutta method can attain the desired order of accuracy.Other test problems with strong shocks and high pressure and density ratios are also conducted to testify the performance of the schemes.

We describe a hybrid method for the solution of hyperbolic conservation laws. A third‐order total variation diminishing (TVD) finite difference scheme is conjugated with a random choice method (RCM) in a grid‐based adaptive way. An efficient multi‐resolution technique is used to detect the high gradient regions of the numerical solution in order to capture the shock with RCM while the smooth regions are computed with the more efficient TVD scheme. The hybrid scheme captures correctly the discontinuities of the solution and saves CPU time. Numerical experiments with one‐ and two‐dimensional problems are presented. In this paper, a new high‐order and high‐resolution method called the Runge–Kutta control volume discontinuous finite element method (RKCVDFEM) was proposed to solve 1D and 2D systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. Its main advantage lies in the local conservation, and it is simpler than the Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (RKDGM). The theoretical analysis showed that the RKCVDFEM has formally an optimal convergence order for 1D systems. Based on logically rectangular grids of irregular quadrilaterals, a scheme for 2D systems was constructed. Some classical problems were simulated and the validity of the method was presented. We present a novel implementation of the modal DG method for hyperbolic conservation laws in two dimensions on graphics processing units (GPUs) using NVIDIA's Compute Unified Device Architecture. Both flexible and highly accurate, DG methods accommodate parallel architectures well as their discontinuous nature produces element‐local approximations. High‐performance scientific computing suits GPUs well, as these powerful, massively parallel, cost‐effective devices have recently included support for double‐precision floating‐point numbers. Computed examples for Euler equations over unstructured triangle meshes demonstrate the effectiveness of our implementation on an NVIDIA GTX 580 device. Profiling of our method reveals performance comparable with an existing nodal DG‐GPU implementation for linear problems. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
