We describe a procedure for one-step patterning and transfer of self-assembled organic monolayers (SAMs) on SiO(2)/Si substrates. This procedure was inspired from an idea of pattern formation at contact area, which realizes high patterning fidelity, and enables a universal approach for the micro/nanometre scale patterning of SAMs. 相似文献

The electrodeposition of lead dioxide (PbO2) onto Au and Ti substrates was anodically executed at 65°C and the electrochemical characteristics and the mechanism in the PbO2 films deposition were investigated by the using an in-situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, cyclic voltammogram, and chronoamperometry experiments. An X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope were also used for investigation of the formed lead dioxide films onto both substrates. Considering the experimental and theoretical mass/charge ratios, PbO2 deposition on Au by applying constant potential was in excellent agreement with the theoretical value, while relatively higher values of the mass/charge ratio due to film hydration were found when Ti was used as substrate. Analysis of X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope show different film structures on each substrate, especially the additional hydration of the lead dioxide film deposited on Ti leads to some structural effects, identified as Sky-Lotus PbO2. 相似文献

Desorption of thiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) seriously limits the fabrication of thiol-based devices. Here we demonstrate that nanoporous Au produced by dealloying Au-Ag alloys exhibits high electrochemical stability against thiolate desorption. Nanoporous Au has many defective sites, lattice strain and residual Ag on the ligament surface. First-principles calculations indicate that these surface aspects increase the binding energy between a SAM and the surface of nanoporous Au. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to create patterned surfaces for localized and specific biochemical recognition. For this purpose, we have developed a protocol for orthogonal and material-selective surface modifications of microfabricated patterned surfaces composed of SiO(2) areas (100 μm diameter) surrounded by Au. The SiO(2) spots were chemically modified by a sequence of reactions (silanization using an amine-terminated silane (APTES), followed by amine coupling of a biotin analogue and biospecific recognition) to achieve efficient immobilization of streptavidin in a functional form. The surrounding Au was rendered inert to protein adsorption by modification by HS(CH(2))(10)CONH(CH(2))(2)(OCH(2)CH(2))(7)OH (thiol-OEG). The surface modification protocol was developed by testing separately homogeneous SiO(2) and Au surfaces, to obtain the two following results: (i) SiO(2) surfaces which allowed the grafting of streptavidin, and subsequent immobilization of biotinylated antibodies, and (ii) Au surfaces showing almost no affinity for the same streptavidin and antibody solutions. The surface interactions were monitored by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), and chemical analyses were performed by polarization modulation-reflexion absorption infrared spectroscopy (PM-RAIRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to assess the validity of the initial orthogonal assembly of APTES and thiol-OEG. Eventually, microscopy imaging of the modified Au/SiO(2) patterned substrates validated the specific binding of streptavidin on the SiO(2)/APTES areas, as well as the subsequent binding of biotinylated anti-rIgG and further detection of fluorescent rIgG on the functionalized SiO(2) areas. These results demonstrate a successful protocol for the preparation of patterned biofunctional surfaces, based on microfabricated Au/SiO(2) templates and supported by careful surface analysis. The strong immobilization of the biomolecules resulting from the described protocol is advantageous in particular for micropatterned substrates for cell-surface interactions. 相似文献

Aminosilane self-assembled monolayers on silicon substrates have been prepared via a gas-phase procedure based on the consecutive reactions of the aminosilane precursor and water vapor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurements have been used to characterize the aminosilane layers. For comparison, substrates modified with aminosilane through a liquid-phase procedure have been prepared and characterized by means of the same techniques. The vapor-based procedure was found to yield more uniform layers characterized by fewer and smaller aggregates as compared with liquid-treated substrates. Grazing angles reflection Fourier transform infrared measurements were carried out on the vapor-treated substrates before and after water exposure to investigate the hydrolysis of the alkoxy groups and further reaction to form siloxane bonds. The surface density of amino groups, as estimated through a colorimetric method, is very similar for vapor- and liquid-treated substrates, suggesting a similar reactivity and accessibility of the functional groups on the surface. 相似文献

In current microarraying experiments, data quality is in large part determined by the quality of the spots that compose the microarray. Since many microarrays are made with contact printing techniques, microarray spot quality is fundamentally linked to the surface characteristics of the microarray substrate. In this work, surface coatings, consisting of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of mixed alkanethiol molecules, were used to control the surface properties of the microarray substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and equilibrium contact angle measurements were performed in order to confirm the chemical content and wettability of these surface coatings. To test their performance in microarraying applications, sample microarrays were printed on these mixed alkanethiol films and then characterized with a noncontact visual metrology system and a fluorescence scanner. This work demonstrates that utilizing mixed alkanethiol SAMs as a surface coating provides spatially homogeneous surface characteristics that are reproducible across multiple microarray substrates as well as within a substrate. In addition, this paper demonstrates that these films are stable and robust as they can maintain their surface characteristics over time. Overall, it is demonstrated that SAMs of mixed alkanethiols serve as a useful surface coating, which enhances spot and therefore data quality in microarraying applications. 相似文献

Interfacial friction of surfaces grafted with one- and two-component self-assembled monolayers 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We present a quantitative study of the nanoscale frictional properties of one-component (pure) and two-component (mixed) alkylsilane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The load and velocity dependence of the friction force was measured in air and ethanol using lateral force microscopy (LFM). It was observed that for SAMs with well-ordered structure (pure SAMs and mixed SAMs composed of two long chain molecules) friction depends nonlinearly on load, at low loads, both in air and in ethanol. These observations are consistent with the low-load contact area predictions of the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory, indicating that for well-ordered SAMs friction force is proportional to contact area and that the true contact area is determined by elastic deformation of the SAM by the LFM probe. In ambient air, the magnitude of the friction force measured using mixed SAMs is found to be similar to that obtained using pure SAMs at the same external load. Changing the medium to ethanol, however, leads to dramatically lower friction in the mixed SAMs. An analysis of the friction data using a thermally activated Eyring model that takes into account the monolayer viscoelasticity suggests that the better friction properties of the mixed SAMs are a consequence of greater disorder and higher molecular mobility in the outer layer/canopy. These findings indicate that multi-tiered SAM coatings comprising a highly ordered underlayer and a disordered, mobile canopy can provide the basis for low-friction coatings for small mechanical systems. 相似文献

A method is presented for depositing mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of dodecanethiol (C12) and 4'-methyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4-butane (H3C-C6H4-C6H4-(CH2)4-SH, BP4) by insertion of BP4 into a closely packed SAM of dodecanethiol on Au(111). Insertion takes place at defect sites such as domain boundaries or etch pits in the gold surface that are characteristic of C12 monolayers on gold. With a lower probability, insertion also occurs beside defect sites inside dodecanethiol domains. Insertion at defect sites results in domains of BP4, whereas insertion into C12 domains leads to isolated BP4 molecules. The isolated BP4 molecules are shown not to move at room temperature. By comparing the apparent height of the isolated BP4 molecules and BP4 domains, it is proposed that the isolated molecules have the same conformation as in the full-coverage phase. A simple two-layer model is proposed to characterize the current transport through BP4. The decay constant beta for the phenylene groups is deduced from the apparent STM heights of the inserted BP4 islands compared to the STM heights of the C12 closely packed monolayers. 相似文献

This paper describes the use of several methods of template stripping (TS) to produce ultraflat films of silver, gold, palladium, and platinum on both rigid and polymeric mechanical supports: a composite of glass and ultraviolet (UV)-curable adhesive (optical adhesive, OA), solder, a composite of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) and OA, and bare OA. Silicon supporting its native oxide layer (Si/SiO2) serves as a template for both mechanical template stripping (mTS), in which the metal film is mechanically cleaved from the template, and chemical template stripping (cTS), in which the film-template composite is immersed in a solution of thiols, and the formation of the SAM on the metal film causes the film to separate from the template. Films formed on all supports have lower root-mean-square (rms) roughness (as measured by atomic force microscopy, AFM) than films used as-deposited (AS-DEP) by electron-beam evaporation. Monolayers of n-dodecanethiolate formed by the mTS and cTS methods are effectively indistinguishable by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM); molecularly resolved images could be obtained using both types of surfaces. The metal surfaces, before being cleaved, are completely protected from contact with the atmosphere. This protection allows metal surfaces intended to support SAMs to be prepared in large batch lots, stored, and then used as needed. Template stripping thus eliminates the requirement for evaporation of the film immediately before use and is a significant extension and simplification of the technology of SAMs and other areas of materials science requiring clean metal surfaces. 相似文献

We present an STM study of self-assembled monolayers of 2,3,6,7,10,11-undecalkoxy-substituted triphenylene (T11) at the n-tetradecane/Au(111) interface under ambient conditions. T11 molecules self-organize as paired rows with molecules lying flat on the surface in an antiparallel position. Three alkyl chains of each T11 molecule align along the 110 direction of the underlying Au(111) substrate. The association of T11 in molecular pairs appears to result from a substrate-induced mechanism governed by the strong anisotropic interaction between T11 alkyl chains and Au(111). 相似文献

In this article the adsorption of 3-methylthiophene on planar and nanoparticle Au surfaces is investigated. The resulting systems are compared with a benchmark system based on 1-decanethiol. The characterization data collected evidence the formation of a packed 3-methylthiophene SAM on the planar surface. In particular, spectroscopic investigations suggest that 3-methylthiophene aromatic system is not adsorbed on the surface through the pi-electron system but rather through the S atom alone. On the other hand, the behavior of 3-methylthiophene on nanoparticle surfaces is notably different from that of the alkanethiol. Only a limited fraction of the surface of Au nanoparticles results to be actually coated after purification; this notwithstanding, the nanoparticle growth seems to be strongly influenced by the presence of such a labile encapsulating agent. 相似文献

4,4'-Dithiodipyridine (PySSPy) monolayers on Au(111) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The studies were performed in solutions of different anions and pHs (0.1 M H2SO4, 0.1 M HClO4, 0.1 and 0.01 M Na2SO4, 0.1 and 0.01 M NaOH). The cyclic current-potential curves in H2SO4 show current peaks at about 0.4 V, which are absent for all other electrolytes at this potential. The XPS data suggest that PySSPy adsorbs via the S endgroup on the gold surface and the S-S bond breaks during adsorption. From the chemical shift of the N(ls) peak, it is concluded that in acidic media the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is fully protonated, whereas in basic solution it is not. The pKa is estimated to be 5.3. STM studies reveal the existence of highly ordered superstructures for the SAM. In Na2SO4 and H2SO4, a (7 x mean square root of 3) structure is proposed. However, whereas in Na2SO4 solutions the superstructure does not change with potential, in 0.1 M H2SO4 the superstructure is observed only negative of the current peak at +0.4 V. At more positive potentials, the film becomes disordered. The results are compared to those for 4-mercaptopyridine (PyS) SAMs. XPS experiments and current-potential curves indicate that both molecules adsorb in the same manner on Au(111), that is, even in the case of PySSPy the adspecies is PyS. The STM results, however, call for a more subtle interpretation. While in Na2SO4 solutions the observed superstructures are the same for both SAMs, markedly different structures are found for PySSPy and PyS SAMs in 0.1 M H2SO4. 相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of n-butanethiol, n-dodecanethiol and their equimolar mixture on Au(111) were prepared and characterized by ellipsometry, contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Results revealed that these SAMs are oriented ultrathin films with the thickness of nanometer scale, and the SAMs were influenced by the molecular chain length, the lattice orientation and cleanliness of the substrates. The surface of the longer chain SAM is hydrophobic. The thicknesses of three SAMs of n-butanethiol, n-dodecanethiol and their mixture revealed by ellipsometry and XPS are about 0.59 - 0.67nm, 1.60- 1.69 nm and 1.23 - 1.32nm, respectively. AFM images further demonstrated that the SAM formed by the mixture has some microdomains with two different thicknesses. 相似文献

Strontianite nanowires have been synthesized on self-assembled monolayers (SAM) in the presence of polyacrylate templates. The morphology of this product exhibits characteristic differences from that of products obtained in the absence of polyacrylate. It is demonstrated that the template-induced crystallization process involves the interaction between the SAM surface, polyacrylate (a dissolved polyelectrolyte), and the cations/anions in solution. By the combination of these components, hierarchically ordered mineral hybrid structures are formed. 相似文献

Immobilization of gold nanorods onto acid-terminated self-assembled monolayers via electrostatic interactions 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

We report the immobilization of gold nanorods onto self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (16-MHA). The simple two step protocol involves formation of a SAM of 16-MHA molecules onto gold-coated glass slides and subsequent immersion of these slides into the gold nanorod solution. The nanorods, formed by a seed-mediated, surfactant-assisted synthesis protocol, are stabilized in solution due to surface modification by the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Attractive electrostatic interactions between the carboxylic acid group on the SAM and the positively charged CTAB molecules are likely responsible for the nanorod immobilization. UV-vis spectroscopy has been used to follow the kinetics of the nanorod immobilization. The nature of interaction between the gold nanorods and the 16-MHA SAM has been probed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The surface morphology of the immobilized rods is studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. SEM was also used to determine the density of the immobilized nanorods as a function of the pH of immobilization. Control over the surface coverage of the immobilized gold nanorods has been demonstrated by simple pH variation. Such well-dispersed immobilized gold nanorods with control over the surface coverage could be interesting substrates for applications such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). 相似文献

There has been substantial recent interest in studying monolayer-protected gold clusters (MPCs) owing to their diverse applications. The present work is an electrochemical study of novel gold nanoparticles covered with a monolayer of mercapto-dodecanol ended chloro-dicyano-quinone (HS-C12O-CDQ), which was adsorbed on the electrode (CDQ-MPCs film). Our findings reveal a redox behavior for CDQ-MPCs film similar to the solution electrochemistry of dichloro-dicyano-quinone. Furthermore, a diffusion-like mechanism was found for electron transfer, which may have occurred due to proton diffusion towards or outwards the electrode through the film casted. Chronoamperometry confirmed diffusion behavior of the ET process. Finally, EIS was used to find the rate constant of ET process for the redox reaction that occurred and the contribution of MPCs in total interfacial capacitance. 相似文献

Monolayers of the thiolipopeptide NH(2)-Cys-Ala-Ser-Ala-Ala-Ser-Ser-Ala-Pro-Ser-Ser-(Myr)Lys(Myr)-OH (III) were formed on gold surfaces by self-assembly, mixed with a lateral spacer of the same peptide composition, NH(2)-Cys-Ala-Ser-Ala-Ala-Ser-Ser-Ala-Pro-Ser-Ser-Lys-OH (I). Different mixing ratios were employed ranging from 0.1 to 1, corresponding to 10-100% thiolipopeptide. These self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were then exposed to a suspension of liposomes with the aim of forming lipid bilayers as a function of the mixing ratio. A clear optimum with respect to homogeneity and electrical properties of the membranes was obtained in the middle region (0.5) of mixing ratio, as revealed by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, impedance spectroscopy, and fluorescence microscopy. The combination of these methods was shown to be a powerful tool, although a true lipid bilayer was not obtained. Instead, vesicle adsorption was shown to be the predominant process, and FRAP (fluorescence recovery after photobleaching) measurements showed that the films were not fluid on the micrometer length scale. 相似文献

We report a computational investigation of the conformation and the dynamics of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a set of aromatic thiols arranged in the ( radical3 x radical3)-R30 degrees packing ratio on a Au(111) surface using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It was found that the molecular conformations were better defined for the arylthiol with two phenyl groups as compared to those with a single phenyl group and that the chemical structure of the head and tail groups had a considerable influence on the system geometry. In line with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of small thiol molecules, we found for the SAMs that the face-centered cubic (fcc) site on the Au(111) surface was the most preferred, followed by the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) site, while the bridge position showed the characteristics of a local energy maximum. The dynamics of thiol head groups on these three Au sites was found to govern the overall dynamics of SAMs as measured by the mean square displacement. We also report that both the conformation and the dynamics on the studied time scale were driven by the SAM formation energy. 相似文献

Template stripping of Au films in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) produces atomically flat and pristine surfaces that serve as substrates for highly ordered self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation. Atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscopy of template-stripped (TS) Au stripped in UHV confirms that the stripping process produces a flat, predominantly 111 textured, atomically clean surface. Octanethiol SAMs vapor deposited in situ onto UHV TS Au show a c(4 x 2) superlattice with (square root 3 x square root 3) R30 degrees basic molecular structure having an ordered domain size up to 100 nm wide. These UHV results validate the TS Au surface as a simple, clean and high-quality surface preparation method for SAMs deposited from both vapor phase and solution phase. 相似文献
