ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC detector dedicated to the study of nucleus–nucleus collisions, in which the formation of the quark–gluon plasma (QGP) is expected. Heavy quarkonia, especially the Upsilon states, are relevant for studying the QGP since they provide an essential probe of the earliest and hottest stages of heavy ion collisions. They will be measured via their dimuon decay channel in ALICE in the muon spectrometer. The muon spectrometer performance has been studied in simulations, the results will be presented with emphasis on the trigger efficiency and rate in Pb–Pb collisions. The expected yields of Upsilon states will be extracted from a simulation based on a global fit of the dimuon mass spectra for different collision centralities.  相似文献

Electroweak radiative corrections to muon capture on nuclei are computed and found to be sizable. They enhance the capture rates for hydrogen and helium by 2.8% and 3.0%, respectively. As a result, the value of the induced pseudoscalar coupling, g(P)(exp), extracted from a recent hydrogen 1S singlet capture experiment is increased by about 21% to g(P)(exp)=7.3+/-1.2 and brought into good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory, g(P)(theory)=8.2+/-0.2. Implications for helium capture rate predictions are also discussed.  相似文献

The study of quarkonium polarization at hadron colliders represents an important test of the production models. Recent results, obtained at CDF, are in striking disagreement with NRQCD predictions, although such a model correctly reproduces the production cross sections. Furthermore, in nucleus-nucleus collisions, the observed degree of polarization may be related to the characteristics of deconfined matter. Because of these interesting features, quarkonium polarization will surely represent an interesting observable at LHC energies. In ALICE, the polarization of the Ω and Γ states can be measured in the dilepton channel, both in the central barrel and in the forward (2.5<y<4) muon arm. We present the results of a feasibility study, relative to the muon channel, concerning p-p and Pb-Pb collisions, showing the expected performance for the measurement of J/Ω and Γ polarization, both as a function of transverse momentum and centrality.  相似文献

The electroweak radiative corrections to the decay widths of theW-boson, Γ \((W \to l\bar v,\bar ud,\bar cs)\) , have been calculated in the standard theory. The results are presented in terms of an electroweak form factorρ W and their dependence onm t , andM H (masses oft-quark and higgs boson) is studied. Typically,ρ W ?1 is of an order of one percent. The partial decay width of the standard model Higgs particle into a general species of fermions is given at the electroweak 1-loop level. The analytic formulae are applicable to light and heavy fermions. Numerical results are presented for Higgs decays intob andt quarks and into charged leptons. For not too heavy Higgs bosons the radiative corrections are of the order of a few per cent. In particular for Higgs bosons below theW + W threshold the correction to the partial width intob quarks is very small and insensitive to the top mass. For every heavy Higgs bosons the 1-loop corrections increase the fermionic decay widths for all channels up to 15%.  相似文献

We explore the possibility of distinguishing the SM-like MSSM Higgs boson from the SM Higgs boson via Higgs boson pair production at future muon collider. We study the behavior of the production cross-section in SM and MSSM with Higgs boson mass for various MSSM parameters tan β and m A . We observe that at fixed CM energy, in the SM, the total cross-section increases with the increase in Higgs boson mass whereas this trend is reversed for the MSSM. The changes that occur for the MSSM in comparison to the SM predictions are quantified in terms of the relative percentage deviation in cross-section. The observed deviations in cross-section for different choices of Higgs boson masses suggest that the measurements of the cross-section could possibly distinguish the SM-like MSSM Higgs boson from the SM Higgs boson.   相似文献
