A new homologous series of SCLCPs containing the 4-cyanobiphenyl mesogenic group attached to the polymaleimide backbone through paraffinic spacers of two to eight methylene units have been prepared. All the polymers exhibit liquid crystalline behavior; specifically SAd- (or SC-) like and nematic phases are observed. The glass transition temperature decreases from 150 to 43°C on increasing spacer length. The isotropization temperatures exhibit an odd–even effect on varying the length and parity of the spacer, in which the odd members exhibit the higher values. This is attributed to the change in the average shape of the side chain as the parity of spacer is varied. The isotropization temperatures (>300–120°C) and the mesophase thermal stabilities (190–60°C) are high. Comparison is made with polymers containing the same mesogenic group attached to backbones of decreasing rigidity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. A Polym. A new homologous series of thermotropic polyesters has been synthesized by polycondensation reaction between isophthaloyl chloride and mesogenic diols 4,4-bis(ω-hydroxyalkoxy)biphenyl in which the spacer length is varied from 3 to 6 methylene units. The thermal behavior of the polymers has been characterized using polarized light microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The odd members exhibit a smectic C (SC) phase in a narrow temperature interval, while the even members form a smectic A (SA) phase in a broader temperature range. All of the obtained compounds were characterized by conventional spectroscopic methods.  相似文献

The synthesis of methacrylates and acrylates containing 4-methoxy-4′-hydroxy-α-methylstilbene and 4-hydroxy-4′-methoxy-α-methylstilbene constitutional isomers attached to the polymerizable group through flexible spacers containing 11, 8, 6, 3, and respectively 2 methylenic units is described. The radical copolymerization of a 1/2 or 2/1 mole ratio of the two constitutional isomeric monomers led to thermotropic side-chain liquid crystalline polymers in all cases. The synthesis of copolysiloxanes based on the same constitutional isomeric mesogens as side groups, and flexible spacers containing 11, 8, 6, 5, and respectively 3 methylenic units is also described. All polymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarization microscopy. The polymers containing 11 methylenic units in the spacer exhibit Sc mesomorphism, while the other polymers are nematic. Copolymethacrylates do not undergo side-chain crystallization. Only the copolyacrylate containing 11 methylenic units in the spacer exhibits side-chain crystallization. All the copolysiloxanes display side-chain crystallization. The number of melting transitions seen for these polymers decreases with increasing spacer length. Copolysiloxanes containing dissimilar spacer length were also prepared. Only the copolymer synthesized with highly dissimilar spacer lengths, i.e., containing 3 and 11 methylenic units, does not undergo side-chain crystallization. These results have demonstrated that while the type of mesophase is dictated only by the spacer length, the degree of decoupling of the motion of the side-groups from the motion of the main chain is strongly dependent on the nature of the polymer backbone. For the same mesogenic unit and spacer length, the thermal stability of the mesophase is also dictated by the nature of the polymer backbone. The use of constitutional isomers of mesogenic units as side groups in liquid crystalline polymers provides at least qualitative information on the degree of decoupling of the side groups from the polymer main chain.  相似文献

The synthesis of side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes containing either 4-[(S)-2-methyl-1-butoxy]phenyl 4-(alkenyloxy)benzoate or laterally fluoro-, chloro-, bromo-, and methoxy-substituted 4-[(S)-2-methyl-1-butoxy]phenyl 4-(alkenyloxy)benzoate mesogenic side groups is presented. The mesomorphic properties of the synthesized polymers have been characterized by optical polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction measurements. The effects of spacer length and lateral substituent on the mesomorphic properties of the obtained polymers are examined. The five polymers which contain three methylene units in the spacers show no mesophase, while the five polymers which contain eleven methylene units in the spacer display smectic mesomorphism. Among the other fifteen polymers which contain respectively four, five, or six methylene units in the spacers, those with small fluoro and chloro substituents reveal respectively an SA phase, while those with bulky bromo and methoxy substituents show no liquid crystalline behavior. The experimental results demonstrate that introducing a bulky lateral substituent into the mesogenic core of a polymer depresses the tendency to form a mesophase. Furthermore, the technique of thermally stimulated current has been used to study the dipolar relaxation mechanisms in a side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxane. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract

A series of liquid-crystalline polystyrene derivatives with pendant mesogenic groups has been prepared and characterized. The side-chain is connected to the polystyrene backbone by a methyleneoxyhexyloxy spacer. The mesogenic group is a 4-alkoxy substituted biphenyl group. The length of the alkoxy end-group varied from a methoxy group to an octyloxy group. The polymers were synthesized by a radical reaction. Molar masses (M n) varied between 17,000 and 46,000, with a molar mass distribution between 1.6 and 2.0. All the polymers were liquid-crystalline, with enantiotropic smectic phases. The polymers were characterized with polarizing microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and calorimetry.  相似文献

A series of polyethyleneimine‐based side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers substituted with different ratios of cyanobiphenyl as pendent mesogenic groups has been synthesized in which the spacer length varies between two and six methylene units. The structures of the synthesized polymers are confirmed by infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The thermal properties of these polymers have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The results indicate that the thermal behaviour of the polymers is strongly dependent on the degree of substitution. Polymers containing more than 69% of mesogenic groups exhibit nematic‐type thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behaviour with schlieren textures. Below this limit, the polymers are amorphous. Polymers with a higher degree of substitution present the crystalline states. The phase transition temperatures increase and the mesomorphic temperature ranges widen with increasing degree of substitution. The clearing temperatures decrease as the spacer length increases. An odd–even effect in the clearing temperatures is observed and the odd members display the higher values.  相似文献

To study structure–mesomorphism relationships of the monomers and polymers based on menthol, four new chiral monomers ( M1 – M4 ) and the corresponding homopolymers ( P1 – P4 ) with menthyl group were synthesized. Their chemical structures, formula, phase behavior, and thermal stability were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, elemental analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The selective reflection of light was investigated with ultraviolet/visible spectrometer. The influence of the mesogenic core rigidity, spacer length, and menthyl steric effect on the mesomorphism of M1 – M4 and P1 – P4 was examined. By inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups, four target monomers and polymers could form the expected mesophase. Moreover, their melting temperature (Tm), glass transition temperature (Tg), clearing temperature (Ti), and mesophase range (ΔT) increased with increasing the mesogenic core rigidity; whereas the Tm and Tg decreased, Ti and ΔT increased with an increase of the spacer length. M1 and M2 showed monotropic and enantiotropic cholesteric phase, respectively, whereas M3 and M4 all revealed chiral smectic C (SmC*), cholesteric and cubic blue phases. In addition, with increasing temperature, the selective reflection of light shifted to the long wavelength region at the SmC* phase range and to the short wavelength region at the cholesteric range, respectively. P1 and P2 only showed a smectic A (SmA) phase, whereas P3 and P4 exhibited the SmC* and SmA phases. All the obtained polymers had very good thermal stability. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Abstract

Backbone anisotropy and the structure of the mesophases of a series of side-chain liquid crystal polymers have been studied in the bulk by neutron scattering. The backbone conformation is obtained by small-angle neutron scattering on mixtures of hydrogenous polymers with deuteriated backbones. The components of the radius of gyration parallel, R and perpendicular, R ∥ to the magnetic field are determined as a function of temperature for both the nematic phase and the smectic phase. It is shown that the polymer backbone is deformed in both phases. When the polymer exhibits only a nematic phase, it adopts a prolate conformation, where the average backbone direction is more or less parallel to the aligned mesogenic groups. Upon transition from the smectic phase to a nematic phase, the backbone in the nematic phase assumes a slightly oblate shape. This tendency towards oblate shape is due to the smectic fluctuations which are always present in such nematic phases. The exentricity of the oblate backbone conformation in the smectic phase is always larger than in the nematic phase. This is attributed to a periodic distribution of the backbone between the mesophase layers. Then, the backbone anisotropy depends not only on the smectic structure (SA1, SAd), but also on the temperature dependence of the density of aligned mesogenic groups in the layers. On the other hand, it is shown that the isotopic mixtures are no longer ideal when polymers deuteriated in the mesogenic moieties are mixed with the corresponding hydrogenous polymers.  相似文献

A series of thermotropic aromatic polyesters based on a triad ester mesogenic unit containing an arylsulfonyl substituted hydroquinone group and a decamethylene spacer group was prepared. The large arylsulfonyl substituent was substituted in the para-position with either electron donating or accepting groups to study the effect of steric and polar interactions on the thermal transitions of these polymers and on the thermodynamic parameters of their isotropization transitions. All polymers formed nematic melts, and a regular decrease in T1, ΔH1 and ΔS1 was observed with increasing molecular radius of the substituted hydroquinone group. However, a polarity or polarizability effect was superimposed on these relationships. Model compounds containing the same aromatic ester triad were prepared and their thermotropic properties were compared to those of the polymers. Essentially identical effects were observed for both.  相似文献

Eleven members of the homologous series of liquid crystal dimers, the α,ω-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl) alkanedioates, have been synthesised and their transitional properties characterised. These dimers consist of two cyanobiphenyl units connected by an alkyl spacer attached via ester linkages. All eleven members exhibit exclusively nematic behaviour. The nematic–isotropic transition temperatures, TNI, and associated entropy changes, ?SNI/R, exhibit pronounced alternations as the length and parity of the spacer is varied; this is characteristic behaviour of liquid crystal dimers. The transitional properties of the ester-linked dimers are compared with the corresponding materials having either ether, methylene or carbonate linkages between the spacer and mesogenic units. For short spacer lengths and both odd- and even-membered dimers, the ester-linked materials show the highest values of TNI and the methylene-linked the lowest. For longer spacer lengths, TNI of the carbonate-linked dimers fall between those of the corresponding ester- and ether-linked dimers. The ether-linked materials show the largest alternation in ?SNI/R on varying spacer length and the carbonate-linked dimers the lowest. This behaviour is interpreted in terms of the molecular geometry and it is suggested that the ether- and ester-linked odd-membered dimers have rather similar shapes. A phase diagram constructed using binary mixtures of the pentyl member of this ester-linked series and the known twist-bend nematogen, 1,7-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl)heptane (CB7CB), is presented. The twist-bend nematic–nematic transition temperature of the mixtures shows a striking convex curvature as the concentration of CB7CB is decreased, and so it is not possible to estimate a virtual twist-bend nematic–nematic transition temperature for the ester-linked material.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of two liquid-crystalline side chain polymers with a chiral centre in the α or β position of the α-hydroxy acid representing the spacer unit are described. The chiral α branching leads to a dramatic decrease in the transition temperatures and a strong narrowing of the smectic mesophase (compared with the unbranched model compound I). The chiral β branching results in a chiral smectic phase, a pronounced contraction of the Sc phase, and the loss of the higher ordered Sf phase. The S*c phase was confirmed by X-ray investigations of oriented samples. Depending on the polymerization conditions samples were obtained which were oriented in melt drawn fibres either with their smectic layers or their mesogenic units in the direction of stress.  相似文献

A new series of liquid crystalline main chain copolyesters were prepared, having ferrocene in the mesogenic segment and a methyl phosphate group along with a methylene spacer. The even numbered methylene groups were varied from two to ten. Liquid crystalline behaviour was investigated on a hot stage optical polarized microscope. Thermal properties of the polymers were analysed by TGA and DSC, revealing that the polymers yield high char products, probably caused by the formation of phosphorus and iron oxides. The glass transition (T g) temperatures of the polymers were found to be fairly low, the result of the incorporation of bulky phosphorus and ferrocene moieties in the chain. The phase behaviour was analysed and correlated with the structure of the polymers. The liquid crystalline textures of the polymers became more transparent with increasing spacer length. Energy minimized structures for the polymer repeating units reveal that both the ferrocene and phosphorus moieties produce more molecular entanglement, thus reducing the T g and T m of the polymers.  相似文献

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of nine new side chain liquid-crystalline polysiloxanes containing one cyclohexyl ring and another 2-4 aromatic rings in their mesogenic side groups are described. All synthesized polymers displayed nematic mesomorphism. Most of the polymers showed a very wide mesomorphic temperature range. The mesogenic core length has profound influence on the phase transitions of the polymers. The mesomorphic temperature range increased with increasing mesogenic core length.  相似文献

Main chain discotic liquid crystalline polymers consisting of triphenylene-based units and alkyl spacers (C8, C10 and C12), connected by ester linkages in the 3- and 6-positions of triphenylene, have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties were studied by DSC, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. It was found that these polymers exhibit a hexagonal columnar (Colh) mesophase with intracolumnar order over a wide temperature range. The clearing temperature decreases on increasing the spacer length. It was found that the clearing temperatures are rather higher than that of the corresponding triphenylene monomer having six hexyloxy chains. These polymers form an ordered columnar mesophase, while the corresponding monomeric mesogen shows a disordered columnar phase. In the polymeric system, the fluctuations of the disc-like units in the mesophase are restricted by the connection of the mesogenic units, which stabilizes the columnar mesophase.  相似文献

The synthesis of new chiral monomers (M1 ?M3 ) based on menthol and the corresponding polyacrylates (P1 ?P3 ) is described. The chemical structures, formula and phase behaviour of the obtained monomers and polymers were characterised with FT-IR, 1H-NMR, elemental analyses, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of the mesogenic core rigidity, spacer length and menthyl steric effect on the phase behaviour of M1 ?M3 and P1 ?P3 is discussed. The expected mesophase of the compounds based on menthol can be obtained by inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal groups. For the chiral monomers and polyacrylates, their corresponding melting temperature (T m), glass transition temperature (T g) and clearing temperature (T i) increased with an increase of the mesogenic core rigidity; while the T m, T g and T i decreased with increasing the spacer length. M1 and P1 showed no mesophase, while M2 and M3 all revealed a SmC* and cholesteric phases. P2 and P3 only showed a cholesteric phase.  相似文献

Non-symmetric dimesogens composed of a classical aromatic mesogenic unit linked to a cholesteryl moiety by a flexible spacer form several types of smectic periodicities: one is connected to the cholesteryl length and the other to the length of the associated dimesogens. In some peculiar cases, anomalies of periodicity resulting from the competition between these incommensurate lengths are observed through the occurrence of two-dimensional modulated phases or incommensurate low ordered smectic phases (Sic). As part of our continuing effort to understand the influence on the smectic arrangement of the molecular parameters of such non-symmetric dimesogens, new homologues with a cholesteryl unit linked by a pentamethylene spacer to an aromatic mesogenic moiety bearing different electron attracting terminal groups have been prepared. For these compounds, only the periodicity resulting from the associated dimesogens is observed. Nevertheless, an incommensurate smectic phase can be induced by mixing one of these compounds with another appropriate dimesogen. Molecular mechanics calculations suggest that the origin of the different smectic structures is strongly connected to the repartition of electrostatic potential along the dimesogen.  相似文献

Carbosilane dendrimers of generation 1 and 2 are functionalized with mesogenic end groups (cyanobiphenyl) via spacers of 5 and 11 carbons. The dielectric relaxation is measured over broad frequency (1 Hz–1 GHz) and temperature (170–470 K) ranges. Two relaxation regimes are observed and characterized as δ and β relaxation. The δ relaxation is nearly a single Debye process and varies strongly with temperature. The SE to SA transition observed for the dendrimers with long spacers causes a jump in the relaxation rate of the δ process. The β process displays an Arrhenius-type temperature dependence with an activation energy of 35 kJ/mol. The relaxation time depends on spacer length. The dielectric relaxation reflects the mutual distortion of the dendrimer scaffold and the smectic layers. Received: 9 June 1999 Accepted in revised form: 21 July 1999  相似文献

Dielectric relaxation studies on aligned liquid-crystalline comblike polysiloxanes are presented. The polymers differ only in the length of the flexible spacer separating the mesogenic side groups from the polysiloxane backbone. The characteristic features of the observed relaxation process as a function of frequency and temperature, in both the liquid-crystalline and isotropic phases, are described, and the effect of the spacer length is discussed. Within the liquid-crystalline phase a narrow single loss process is observed, due to the relaxation of the mesogenic side groups around the polymer backbone, whereas in the isotropic phase a much broader loss curve is seen. The transition from an aligned polymer mesophase to the randomly aligned isotropic phase is also studied in detial, and comparison with earlier work on comblike polyacrylate and methacrylate liquid crystals is presented.  相似文献

Five kinds of side chain liquid crystalline polymers with a chiral component in the pendant group were synthesized and characterized by GPC, polarizing microscopy, DSC, X-ray diffraction ano Dielectric Relaxation Spectroscopy. The liquid crystalline behaviour of the polymers is affected by the length of flexible spacer, which links the mesogenic side chain to the polymer backbone and mesogenic moiety. The characteristic of smectic phase is observed for all the polymers.  相似文献
