Approximation by rational operators in Lp spaces

The present paper introduces a kind of Kantorovich type Shepard operators. Complete results including direct and converse results, equivalence results are established. As Della Vecchia and Mastroianni ([4], [7]) did, our results involve a weighted modulus of smoothness related to step‐functions φ (x) vanishing algebraically at the endpoints ±1 (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. On an extremal relation of Bernstein operators

In this note we present a new characterization of Bernstein operators by showing that they are the only solution of a certain extremal relation.

Differentiated shift-invariant integral operators,univariate case

In a recent paper [1] the author, along with H. Gonska, introduced some wavelet type integral operators over the whole real line and studied their properties such as shift-invariance, global smoothness preservation, convergence to the unit, and preservation of probability distribution functions. These operators are very general and they are introduced through a convolution-like iteration of another general operator with a scaling type function. In this paper the author provides sufficient conditions, so that the derivatives of the above operators enjoy the same nice properties as their originals. A sufficient condition is also given so that the “global smoothness preservation” related inequality becomes sharp. At the end several applications are given, where the derivatives of the very general specialized operators are shown to fulfill all the above properties. In particular it is shown that they preserve continuous probability density functions.     

Pointwise weighted approximation by Bernstein operators

We consider the pointwise weighted approximation by Bernstein operators. The related weight functions are Jacobi weights . We obtain approximation equivalence theorems, using a weighted modulus of smoothness , which is an extension of~[5].     

A way of constructing translation network operators by Bernstein operators

In the present paper,we provide a way of constructing translation network operators by Bernstein-Durrmeyer operators.     

Derivatives of multidimensional Bernstein operators and smoothness

We characterize the directional derivatives of multidimensional Bernstein operators by a new measure of smoothness. This task is carried out by means of establishing the relation between the asymptotic behavior of the derivatives and the smoothness of the functions they approximate. The obtained results generalize the corresponding ones for univariate Bernstein operators.     

Best constants for tensor products of Bernstein type operators

For the tensor product of k copies of the same one-dimensional Bernstein-type operator L, we consider the problem of finding the best constant in preservation of the usual modulus of continuity for the lp-norm on Rk. Two main results are obtained: the first one gives both necessary and sufficient conditions in order that 1+k1−1/p is the best uniform constant for a single operator; the second one gives sufficient conditions in order that 1+k1−1/p is the best uniform constant for a family of operators. The general results are applied to several classical families of operators usually considered in approximation theory. Throughout the paper, probabilistic concepts and methods play an important role.

A note on fractional derivatives and fractional powers of operators

Definitions of fractional derivatives and fractional powers of positive operators are considered. The connection of fractional derivatives with fractional powers of positive operators is presented. The formula for fractional difference derivative is obtained.     

Voronovskaya‐type theorems for Urysohn type nonlinear Bernstein operators

The concern of this paper is to continue the investigation of convergence properties of nonlinear approximation operators, which are defined by Karsli. In details, the paper centers around Urysohn‐type nonlinear counterpart of the Bernstein operators. As a continuation of the study of Karsli, the present paper is devoted to obtain Voronovskaya‐type theorems for the Urysohn‐type nonlinear Bernstein operators.     

An answer to Hermann's conjecture on Bleimann–Butzer–Hahn operators

We give a negative answer to the conjecture of Hermann [On the operator of Bleimann, Butzer and Hahn, in: J. Szabados, K. Tandori (Eds.), Approximation Theory, Proc. Conf., Kecskemét/Hung., 1990, North-Holland Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1991, Colloq. Math. Soc. János Bolyai 58 (1991) 355–360] on Bleimann–Butzer–Hahn operators L_n. Our main result states that for each locally bounded positive function h there exists a continuous positive function f defined on [0,∞) with L_nf→f(n→∞), pointwise on [0,∞), such that

Moreover we construct an explicit counterexample function to Hermann's conjecture.

Dominated inessential operators

We consider the following three closed algebraic ideals of operators on a Banach lattice: compact, strictly singular, and inessential operators. Suppose that 0?A?B and B is compact or strictly singular. We show that, under certain assumptions, A (or some power of A) is inessential.     

Preservation of Lipschitz constants by Bernstein type operators

Summary We obtain preservation inequalities for Lipschitz constants of higher order in simultaneous approximation processes by Bernstein type operators. From such inequalities we derive the preservation of the corresponding Lipschitz spaces.     

Hankel operators and best Hankel approximation on the half-plane

The objective of this paper is to give an interrelation between Hankel oeprators on the unit disc and Hankel operators on the half-plane. As an application, the AAK result on the half-plane is established and the rate of best Hankel approximation on the halfplane is derived. Invariant sublattices for positive operators

There are, by now, many results which guarantee that positive operators on Banach lattices have non-trivial closed invariant sublattices. In particular, this is true for every positive compact operator. Apart from some results of a general nature, in this paper we present several examples of positive operators on Banach lattices which do not have non-trivial closed invariant sublattices. These examples include both AM-spaces and Banach lattices with an order continuous norm and which are and are not atomic. In all these cases we can ensure that the operators do possess non-trivial closed invariant subspaces.     

On simultaneous approximation of the Bernstein Durrmeyer operators

The present paper deals with the study of the rate of convergence of the Bézier variant of certain Bernstein Durrmeyer type operators in simultaneous approximation.     

Positivity of Toeplitz operators via Berezin transform

In this paper, we study positive Toeplitz operators on the Bergman space via their Berezin transforms. Surprisingly we show that the positivity of a Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space is not completely determined by the positivity of the Berezin transform of its symbol. In fact, we show that even if the minimal value of the Berezin transform of a quadratic polynomial of |z|$|z|$ on the unit disk is positive, the Toeplitz operator with the function as the symbol may not be positive.
