In this paper we extend the theory of spectral measures developed in Parts I and II to the case where values are assumed in the set of discontinuous (in normed spaces „unbounded”) operators. Examples of operators in nonlocally convex spaces are given, which have densely defined measures.  相似文献

We generalise the even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. The proof is a variant of that for the odd case which appears in Part I. To allow for algebras with a non-trivial centre we have to establish a theory of unbounded Fredholm operators in a general semifinite von Neumann algebra and in particular prove a generalised McKean-Singer formula.  相似文献

In this paper we use the Nash-Williams theory of fronts and barriers to study weakly null sequences in Banach spaces. Specifically, we show how barriers relate to the classical fact that C(K) with K a countable compactum is c0-saturated. Another result relates the notion of a barrier to the Maurey-Rosenthal example of a weakly null sequence with no unconditional subsequences. In particular, we construct examples of weakly-null sequences which are α-unconditional but not β-unconditional.  相似文献

In this review we describe the basic structure of positive continuous one-parameter semigroups acting on ordered Banach spaces. The review is in two parts.First we discuss the general structure of ordered Banach spaces and their ordered duals. We examine normality and generation properties of the cones of positive elements with particular emphasis on monotone properties of the norm. The special cases of Banach lattices, order-unit spaces, and base-norm spaces, are also examined.Second we develop the theory of positive strongly continuous semigroups on ordered Banach spaces, and positive weak*-continuous semigroups on the dual spaces. Initially we derive analogues of the Feller-Miyadera-Phillips and Hille-Yosida theorems on generation of positive semigroups. Subsequently we analyse strict positivity, irreducibility, and spectral properties, in parallel with the Perron-Frobenius theory of positive matrices.  相似文献

We show that every frame for a Hilbert space H can be written as a (multiple of a) sum of three orthonormal bases for H. We next show that this result is best possible by including a result of Kalton: A frame can be represented as a linear combination of two orthonormal bases if and only if it is a Riesz basis. We further show that every frame can be written as a (multiple of a) sum of two tight frames with frame bounds one or a sum of an orthonormal basis and a Riesz basis for H. Finally, every frame can be written as a (multiple of a) average of two orthonormal bases for a larger Hilbert space. Acknowledgements and Notes. This research was supported by NSF DMS 9701234. In Part I of this work we derived a duality theorem for partially finite convex programs, problems for which the standard Slater condition fails almost invariably. Our result depended on a constraint qualification involving the notion ofquasi relative interior. The derivation of the primal solution from a dual solution depended on the differentiability of the dual objective function: the differentiability of various convex functions in lattices was considered at the end of Part I. In Part II we shall apply our results to a number of more concrete problems, including variants of semi-infinite linear programming,L 1 approximation, constrained approximation and interpolation, spectral estimation, semi-infinite transportation problems and the generalized market area problem of Lowe and Hurter (1976). As in Part I, we shall use lattice notation extensively, but, as we illustrated there, in concrete examples lattice-theoretic ideas can be avoided, if preferred, by direct calculation.  相似文献

We present a Riesz representation theorem in the setting of extended integration theory as introduced in [6]. The result is used to obtain boundedness theorems for integral operators in the more general setting of spaces of vector valued extended integrable functions.  相似文献

Summary The spectral domain of harmonizable processes is studied and a criterion for its completeness is obtained. It is shown that even for periodically correlated processes the spectral domain need not be complete. This work was funded in part by Office of Naval Research grant N00014-89-J-1824 and in part by US Army Research Office grant DAAL 03-91-G-0238. In this paper we establish a connection between the approximate factorization property appearing in the theory of dual algebras and the spectral inclusion property for a class of Toeplitz operators on Hilbert spaces of vector valued square integrable functions. As an application, it follows that a wide range of dual algebras of subnormal Toeplitz operators on various Hardy spaces associated to function algebras have property (A 1(1)). It is also proved that the dual algebra generated by a spherical isometry (with a possibly infinite number of components) has the same property. One particular application is given to the existence of unimodular functions sitting in cyclic invariant subspaces of weak* Dirichlet algebras. Moreover, by this method we provide a unified approach to several Toeplitz spectral inclusion theorems. Research partially supported by grant CNCSIS GR202/2006 (cod 813).  相似文献

We continue the development of part I. The Riesz representation theorem is proved without assuming local convexity. This theorem is applied to give sufficient conditions for an operator (continuous or otherwise) to be spectral. A uniqueness problem is pointed out and the function calculus is extended to the case of several variables. A Radon—Nikodym theorem is proved.  相似文献

Abstract

Throughout the literature on optimal control in Banach spaces, hypotheses like “separable and reflexive” are frequently encountered. In this note we consider one such case, studied by Peichl and Schappacher. Using techniques from Banach space theory and the theory of vector measures, we show how to remove the hypothesis of reflexivity and translate the problem of controls to one about the strong continuity of an adjoint semigroup on the positive real axis.  相似文献

We continue the study of a generalization of L. de Branges's theory of Hilbert spaces of entire functions to the Pontryagin space setting. In this-second-part we investigate isometric embeddings of spaces of entire functions into spacesL 2 () understood in a distributional sense and consider Weyl coefficients of matrix chains. The main task is to give a proof of an indefinite version of the inverse spectral theorem for Nevanlinna functions. Our methods use the theory developed by L. de Branges and the theory of extensions of symmetric operators of M.G.Krein.  相似文献

Abstract

Spectral theory in ordered Banach algebras (OBAs) has been investigated and several authors have made contributions. However, the results are not applicable to non-commutative C*-algebras, since a non-commutative C*-algebra is not an OBA. In this paper we introduce a more general structure, called a commutatively ordered Banach algebra (COBA), which includes the class of OBAs. Every C* - algebra is a COBA. We will give the basic properties of COBAs and show how known results in OBAs can be generalized to the COBA setting. We will then discuss two spectral problems regarding COBA elements. The results obtained, of course, hold true in an OBA as well. These results extend the theory of COBAs and OBAs.  相似文献

We use a simple example (the projective plane on seven points) to give an introductory survey on the problems and methods in finite geometries — an area of mathematics related to geometry, combinatorial theory, algebra, group theory and number theory as well as to applied mathematics (e.g., coding theory, information theory, statistical design of experiments, tomography, cryptography, etc.). As this list already indicates, finite geometries is — both from the point of view of pure mathematics and from that of applications related to computer science and communication engineering — one of the most interesting and active fields of mathematics. It is the aim of this paper to introduce the nonspecialist to some of these aspects. To Professor Günter Pickert on the occasion of his 65th birthday  相似文献

The aim of this work is to apply the complex interpolation method to norms of n-tuples of operators in a symmetrically-normed ideal J?B(H) defined by a ? symmetric norming function (s.n.f.). The norms considered define Finsler metrics in a certain manifold of positive operators, and can be regarded as weighted ?-norms, the weight being a positive invertible operator.  相似文献

We show that a continuous additive positively homogeneous map from a closed not necessarily proper cone in a Banach space onto a Banach space is an open map precisely when it is surjective. This generalization of the usual Open Mapping Theorem for Banach spaces is then combined with Michael's Selection Theorem to yield the existence of a continuous bounded positively homogeneous right inverse of such a surjective map; a strong version of the usual Open Mapping Theorem is then a special case. As another consequence, an improved version of the analogue of Andô's Theorem for an ordered Banach space is obtained for a Banach space that is, more generally than in Andô's Theorem, a sum of possibly uncountably many closed not necessarily proper cones. Applications are given for a (pre)-ordered Banach space and for various spaces of continuous functions taking values in such a Banach space or, more generally, taking values in an arbitrary Banach space that is a finite sum of closed not necessarily proper cones.  相似文献

We discuss direct and inverse spectral theory for the isospectral problem of the dispersionless Camassa–Holm equation, where the weight is allowed to be a finite signed measure. In particular, we prove that this weight is uniquely determined by the spectral data and solve the inverse spectral problem for the class of measures which are sign definite. The results are applied to deduce several facts for the dispersionless Camassa–Holm equation. In particular, we show that initial conditions with integrable momentum asymptotically split into a sum of peakons as conjectured by McKean.  相似文献

For second order linear equations and inequalities which are degenerate elliptic but which possess a uniformly elliptic direction, we formulate and prove weak maximum principles which are compatible with a solvability theory in suitably weighted versions of L2-based Sobolev spaces. The operators are not necessarily in divergence form, have terms of lower order, and have low regularity assumptions on the coefficients. The needed weighted Sobolev spaces are, in general, anisotropic spaces defined by a non-negative continuous matrix weight. As preparation, we prove a Poincaré inequality with respect to such matrix weights and analyze the elementary properties of the weighted spaces. Comparisons to known results and examples of operators which are elliptic away from a hyperplane of arbitrary codimension are given. Finally, in the important special case of operators whose principal part is of Grushin type, we apply these results to obtain some spectral theory results such as the existence of a principal eigenvalue.  相似文献

In this paper we prove that the L2 spectral radius of the traction double layer potential operator associated with the Lamé system on an infinite sector in R2 is within 10−2 from a certain conjectured value which depends explicitly on the aperture of the sector and the Lamé moduli of the system. This type of result is relevant to the spectral radius conjecture, cf., e.g., Problem 3.2.12 in [C.E. Kenig, Harmonic Analysis Techniques for Second Order Elliptic Boundary Value Problems, CBMS Reg. Conf. Ser. Math., vol. 83, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 1994]. The techniques employed in the paper are a blend of classical tools such as Mellin transforms, and Calderón-Zygmund theory, as well as interval analysis—resulting in a computer-aided proof.  相似文献
