Constraint decomposition algorithms in global optimization

Many global optimization problems can be formulated in the form min{c(x, y): x X, y Y, (x, y) Z, y G} where X, Y are polytopes in ^p , ⁿ , respectively, Z is a closed convex set in ^p+n, while G is the complement of an open convex set in ⁿ . The function c: ^p+n is assumed to be linear. Using the fact that the nonconvex constraints depend only upon they-variables, we modify and combine basic global optimization techniques such that some new decomposition methods result which involve global optimization procedures only in ⁿ . Computational experiments show that the resulting algorithms work well for problems with smalln.     

The Spectral Function and Principal Eigenvalues for Schrödinger Operators

Let m , 0 m₊ in Kato's class. We investigate the spectral function s( + m) where s( + m) denotes the upper bound of the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator + m. In particular, we determine its derivative at 0. If m_- is sufficiently large, we show that there exists a unique ₁ > 0 such that s( + ₁m) = 0. Under suitable conditions on m⁺ it follows that 0 is an eigenvalue of + ₁m with positive eigenfunction.

On pure equilibria for bimatrix games

In Shapley (1964) several conditions are given for the existence of pure saddlepoints for a matrix game. In this paper we show that only a few of these conditions, when translated to the situation of a bimatrix game guarantee the existence of pure equilibria. Further, we associate with a bimatrix game a directed graph as well as a so-called binary game. If this graph has no cycles, then the bimatrix game in question has a pure equilibrium. It is shown that the binary game for a bimatrix game without a pure equilibrium possesses a fundamental subgame, which can be characterized by means of minimal cycles.

Concretely Locally Presentable and Locally Generated Categories

We give concrete versions of the characterizations of locally -presentable (resp. -generated) categories as categories of models of (resp. weakly) -ary limit-theories and of (resp. weakly) -ary essentially algebraic theories. By concrete we mean that starting with a category of -structures, the theories obtained are extensions of the original ones, and the equivalences of categories are concrete isomorphisms. -presentable and -generated objects are also investigated from this viewpoint.
