We show that for any fixed > 0, there are numbers >0 and p0 2 with the following property: for every prime p p0 and every integer N such that p1/(4e )+ N p, the sequence1, 2, ..., N contains at least N quadratic non-residues modulop. Let M ZFC and let F: be a function on the ordinals of M.For which such F will there exist a model N of ZFC with thesame ordinals as M such that N is a cardinal if and only ifM () ( = F())? A partial answer to this question was given in a theorem ofZarach. We present here a counter-example and correction tothis theorem. Our argument invokes results of Drake concerningthe collapse of weak cardinal powers in certain generic extensions. Let M and N be closed non-positively curved manifolds, and letf:MN be a smooth map. Results of Eells and Sampson [1] showthat f is homotopic to a harmonic map , and Hartman [6] showedthat this is unique when N is negatively curved and f*(1 M)is not cyclic. Lawson and Yau conjectured that if f:MN is ahomotopy equivalence, where M and N are negatively curved, thenthe unique harmonic map homotopic to f would be a diffeomorphism.Counterexamples to this conjecture appeared in [2], and laterin [7] and [5]. In [2], H. Furstenberg studied a distal action of a locallycompact group G on a compact metric space X, and establisheda structure theorem. As a consequence, he showed that if G isabelian, then a simply connected space X does not admit a minimaldistal G-action. In this paper we concern ourselves with a nonsingular flow = {t} on a closed 3-manifold M. Recall that is called distalif for any distinct two points x, y M, the distance d(tx, ty)is bounded away from 0. The distality depends strongly uponthe time parametrization. A smooth fibration of 3 by oriented lines is given by a smoothunit vector field V on 3 all of whose integral curves are straightlines. Such a fibration is said to be nondegenerate if dV vanishesonly in the direction of V. Let be the space of oriented linesof 3 endowed with its canonical pseudo-Riemannian neutral metric.We characterize the nondegenerate smooth fibrations of 3 byoriented lines as the closed (in the relative topology) definiteconnected surfaces in . In particular, local conditions on imply the existence of a global fibration. Besides, for anysuch fibration the base space is diffeomorphic to the open discand the directions of the fibers form an open convex set ofthe two-sphere. We characterize as well, in a similar way, thesmooth (possibly degenerate) fibrations.  相似文献
