Of concern in the paper is an analytical study of pulsatile blood flow in an irregular stenosed arterial segment through a mathematical model. The model is two-dimensional and axisymmetric with an outline of the stenosis obtained from a three-dimensional casting of a mildly stenosed artery [L. Back, Y. Cho, D. Crawford, R. Cuffel, Effect of mild atherosclerosis on flow resistance in a coronary artery casting of man, J. Biomech. Eng. 106 (1984) 48–53]. The combined influence of an asymmetric shape and surface irregularities of the constriction has been explored in a computational study of blood flow through arterial stenosis with 48% areal occlusion. The moving wall of the artery is included to be anisotropic, linear, viscoelastic, incompressible circular cylindrical membrane shell. The effect of the surrounding connective tissues on the motion of the arterial wall is also paid due attention. Results are also obtained for a smooth stenosis model and also for a stenosis model representative by the cosine curve. An extensive quantitative analysis has been performed in non-uniform non-staggered grids through numerical computations for the effect of surface irregularities on the flow velocity, the flux, the resistive impedance and on the wall shear stress through their graphical representations so as to validate the applicability of such an improved mathematical model.

The presented procedure enables calculation of a velocity profile for the Wagner fluid in the Poiseuille flow. The velocity profile can be approximated with a prescribed accuracy, thus enabling boundary conditions for the Wagner model, that are required for numerical simulations to be defined. Convergence analysis for the procedure indicates the existence of a critical Deborah number, which limits the validity of the approximation.

Current theoretical investigation deals with mathematical model of unsteady non-Newtonian flow of blood through a stenosed artery. The flowing blood is considered as a viscoelastic fluid having shear-thinning rheology and characterized by generalised Oldroyd-B model. The arterial wall is considered to be rigid having cosine shaped stenosis in its lumen. The governing equations of motion accompanied by appropriate choice of the initial and boundary conditions are solved numerically by MAC (Marker and Cell) method and the results are checked for numerical stability with desired degree of accuracy. The quantitative analysis has been carried out finally which includes the respective profiles of the flow-field. The key factors like the wall shear stress and flow separation are also examined for further qualitative insight into the flow through arterial stenosis. The present results show quite consistency with several existing results in the literature which substantiate sufficiently to validate the applicability of the model under consideration.

In this study, a mathematical model is formulated to examine the blood flow through a cylindrical stenosed blood vessel. The stenosis disease is caused because of the abnormal narrowing of flow in the body. This narrowing causes serious health issues like heart attack and may decrease blood flow in the blood vessel. Mathematical modeling helps us analyze such issues. A mathematical model is considered in this study to explore the blood flow in a stenosis artery and is solved numerically with the finite difference method. The artery is an elastic cylindrical tube containing blood defined as a viscoelastic fluid. A complete parametric analysis has been done for the flow velocity to clarify the applicability of the defined problem. Moreover, the flow characteristics such as the impedance, the wall shear stress in the stenotic region, the shear stresses in the throat of the stenosis and at the critical stenosis height are discussed. The obtained results show that the intensity of the stenosis occurs mostly at the highest narrowing areas compared with all other areas of the vessel, which has a direct impact on the wall shear stress. It is also observed that the resistive impedance and wall shear pressure get the maximum values at the critical height of the stenosis.

A mathematical model of unsteady non‐Newtonian blood flow together with the mass transfer through constricted arteries has been developed. The mass transport refers to the movement of atherogenic molecules, i.e. blood‐borne components, such as low‐density lipoproteins from flowing blood into the arterial walls or vice versa. The flowing blood is represented as the suspension of all erythrocytes assumed to be Eringen's micropolar fluid and the arterial wall is considered to be rigid having cosine‐shaped stenosis in its lumen. The mass transfer to blood is controlled by the convection–diffusion equation. The governing equations of motion accompanied by the appropriate choice of the boundary conditions are solved numerically by Marker and Cell method and the results obtained are checked for numerical stability with the desired degree of accuracy. The quantitative analysis carried out finally includes the respective profiles of the flow‐field and the mass concentration along with their distributions over the entire arterial segment as well. The key factors, such as the wall shear stress and Sherwood number, are also examined for further quantitative insight into the flow and the mass transport phenomena through arterial stenosis. The present results show consistency with several existing results in the literature which substantiate sufficiently to validate the applicability of the model under consideration. Heat and mass transfer effects on Newtonian biomagnetic fluid of blood flow through a tapered porous artery with a stenosis is investigated. Governing equations have been modeled by treating blood as Newtonian biomagnetic fluid. The governing equations are simplified under the assumption of mild stenosis. Exact solutions have been evaluated for velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles. The effects of Newtonian nature of blood on velocity, temperature, concentration profile, wall shear stress, shearing stress at the stenosis throat and impedance of the artery are discussed graphically. Stream lines have been presented in last section of the article.

Finite difference solutions have been obtained by the perturbation method to investigate the influence of shear thinning and elasticity on the flow around an inclined circular cylinder of finite length in a uniform flow. In this numerical analysis a generalized upper-convected Maxwell model, in which the viscosity changes according to the Cross model, has been used. The local flow over the cylinder is only slightly deflected. However, in the wake flow behind the cylinder the particle path is remarkably influenced by the axial flow and rapidly flows up parallel to the cylinder's axis. Then it gradually rejoins direction of the incoming flow. It is found that viscoelastic fluids are prone to flow axially in the vicinity of the cylinder. The numerical predictions generally agree with the flow visualization results. The numerical solutions also demonstrate that elasticity has a strong effect on the velocity profile especially around both ends of the cylinder; elasticity increases the asymmetric profiles of both circumferential velocity and axial velocity with respect to equal to 90° and decreases a difference in the circumferential velocity between the windward end and the leeward end.For non-Newtonian fluids, the length of the wake flow is influenced by not only the Reynolds number but also the cylinder diameter and it is larger for the cylinder with the smaller diameter at the same Reynolds number.Partly presented at the 9th Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference, University of Auckland, New Zealand, 8–12 December, 1986  相似文献

An analytical study was made to examine the effect of vascular deformability on the pulsatile blood flow in arterioles through the use of a suitable mathematical model. The blood in arterioles is assumed to consist of two layers — both Newtonian but with differing coefficients of viscosity. This paper explores the mathematical model for couple stress fluid flow through an annular region. The above model is used for studying the blood flow be-tween the clogged (stenotic) artery and the catheter. The asymmetric nature of the stenosis is considered. The closed form expressions for the physiological parameters such as impedance and shear stress at the wall are obtained. The effects of various geomet-ric parameters and the parameters arising out of the fluid considered are discussed by considering the slip velocity and tapering angle. The study of the above model is very significant as it has direct applications in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

In a recent paper, Joseph et al. showed that, for a number of viscoelastic fluids, one can observe the phenomenon of delayed die swell beyond a critical extrusion velocity, or beyond a critical value of the viscoelastic Mach number. Giesekus had also observed that delayed die swell is a critical phenomenon. In the present paper, we find a set of material and flow parameters under which it is possible to simulate delayed die swell. For the viscoelastic flow calculation, we use the finite element algorithm with sub-elements for the stresses and streamline upwinding in the discretized constitutive equations. For the free surface, we use an implicit technique which allows us to implement Newton's method for solving the non-linear system of equations. The fluid is Oldroyd-B which, in the present problem, is a singular perturbation of the Maxwell fluid. The results show very little sensitivity to the size of the retardation time. We also show delayed die swell for a Giesekus fluid. This paper is dedicated to Professor Hanswalter Giesekus on the occasion of his retirement as Editor of Rheologica Acta.

A two-point laser-Doppler anemometer is used to determine velocity gradients. Measuring additionally the pressure drop in channel flow allows one to use this instrument as a viscometer. This is demonstrated by measuring two polymer solutions as well as water. Besides the velocity gradient, the system also furnishes the velocity as well as velocity fluctuations. For surfactant solutions the sudden increase in these fluctuations go hand-in-hand with the sudden shear thickening reported. This behavior thus seems to be caused by a change in type of flow field (structural turbulence) rather than a change in the rheology of the surfactant solutions. This paper is dedicated to Professor Hanswalter Giesekus on the occasion of his retirement as Editor of Rheologica Acta.

The flow of a non-Newtonian fluid driven by an axial pressure gradient through a corrugated pipe of circular cross-section is analysed theoretically and realized experimentally. Particular attention is directed toward the pressure-discharge characteristics of the pipe which change due to the corrugation. A theory is developed for the limiting case of corrugations with long wave-length, where the cross-section of the pipe varies gradually in the flow direction and the effects of inertia and elasticity of the fluid are of minor importance. Within such a long-wave approximation the flow rate, in dependence on the applied pressure drop and on the non-linear viscous properties of the fluid, is determined analytically for arbitrary wave amplitudes. The theoretical results are in agreement with experimental findings.

The paper is concerned with the squeezing flow of a model suspension fluid. The numerical solution obtained by a time-dependent Boundary Element Method is compared to an asymptotic solution at large radius. It is found that the kinematics are Newtonian in character, and the fibres quickly align themselves radially. Consequently, the squeezing force is only weakly dependent on the initial orientations of the fibres and the device can be used for measuring the effective viscosity of the suspension. The effective viscosity found from the squeezing flow agrees surprisingly well with experimental data and numerical data derived from the falling sphere geometry at low volume fractions ( < 0.1).

The stability of a viscoelastic fluid in a densely packed horizontal porous layer heated from below is considered using an Oldroyd model. Critical Rayleigh number, wave number, and frequency for overstability are determined by applying the linear stability theory. It is shown that the critical Rayleigh number is invariant under all relevant boundary combinations. Also, it is found that the effect of elasticity of the fluid is to destabilize the system and that of porosity is to stabilize the same. The limiting case of very high Prandtl number and the degenerate case corresponding to the Maxwell model are analyzed in some detail.

Analytical solutions are obtained for the free surface cell model of packed beds using a third order fluid. Second order perturbed results indicate a substantial increase in resistance to the flow of a viscoelastic fluid through a packed bed. This predicted increase is in good agreement with experimental findings.

Aqueous solutions of cationic surfactant systems with strongly binding counterions show the striking phenomenon of shear induced phase transitions. At low shear rates or angular frequencies, the solutions exhibit Newtonian flow. At high rates of shear, however, the rheological properties change dramatically. Above a well defined threshold value of the velocity gradient, a supermolecular structure can be formed from micellar aggregates. This shear induced structure (SIS) behaves like a gel and exhibits strong flow birefringence. The formation of the shear induced structure is very complicated and depends on the specific conditions of the surfactant system. In this paper we discuss new results which have been obtained from rheological measurements and from flow birefringence data. We examine the stability of the shear induced state as a function of temperature, surfactant concentration and salt concentration and we analyse the effect of solubilisation of alcohols and hydrocarbons. The results are interpreted in terms of a kinetic model which accounts for the observed behavior.Dedicated to the 60. birthday of Prof. H. A mathematical model for blood flow through an elastic artery with multistenosis under the effect of a magnetic field in a porous medium is presented. The considered arterial segment is simulated by an anisotropically elastic cylindrical tube filled with a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid representing blood. An artery with mild local narrowing in its lumen forming a stenosis is analyzed. The effects of arterial wall parameters represent viscoelastic stresses along the longitudinal and circumferential directions T t and T θ , respectively. The degree of anisotropy of the vessel wall γ, total mass of the vessel, and surrounding tissues M and contributions of the viscous and elastic constraints to the total tethering C and K respectively on resistance impedance, wall shear stress distribution, and radial and axial velocities are illustrated. Also, the effects of the stenosis shape m, the constant of permeability X, the Hartmann number H α and the maximum height of the stenosis size δ on the fluid flow characteristics are investigated. The results show that the flow is appreciably influenced by surrounding connective tissues of the arterial wall motion, and the degree of anisotropy of the vessel wall plays an important role in determining the material of the artery. Further, the wall shear stress distribution increases with increasing T t and γ while decreases with increasing T θ , M, C, and K. Transmission of the wall shear stress distribution and resistance impedance at the wall surface through a tethered tube are substantially lower than those through a free tube, while the shearing stress distribution at the stenosis throat has inverse characteristic through totally tethered and free tubes. The trapping bolus increases in size toward the line center of the tube as the permeability constant X increases and decreases with the Hartmann number Ha increased. Finally, the trapping bolus appears, gradually in the case of non-symmetric stenosis, and disappears in the case of symmetric stenosis. The size of trapped bolus for the stream lines in a free isotropic tube (i.e., a tube initially unstressed) is smaller than those in a tethered tube.

The problem of peristaltic transport of a non-Newtonian (power-law) fluid in uniform and non-uniform two-dimensional channels has been investigated under zero Reynolds number with long wavelength approximation. A comparison of the results with those for a Newtonian fluid model shows that the magnitude of pressure rise, under a given set of conditions, is smaller in the case of the non-Newtonian fluid (power-law indexn < 1) at zero flow rate. Further, the pressure rise is smaller asn decreases from 1 at zero flow rate, is independent ofn at a certain value of flow rate and becomes greater if flow rate increases further. Also, at a given flow rate, an increase in wavelength leads to a decrease in pressure rise and increase in the influence of non-Newtonian behaviour. Pressure rise in the case of non-uniform geometry, is found to be much smaller than the corresponding value in the case of uniform geometry. Finally, the analysis is applied and compared with observed flow rates in the ductus efferentes of the male reproductive tract.
