TheT ε * integral was calculated on the surface of single edge notched, three-point bend (SE(B)) specimens using experimentally obtained displacements. Comparison was made withT ε * calculated with the measured surface displacements andT ε * calculated at several points through the thickness of a finite element (FE) model of the SE(B) specimen. Good comparison was found between the surfaceT ε * calculated from displacements extracted from the FE model and the surfaceT ε * calculated from experimentally obtained displacements. The computedT ε * integral was also observed to decrease as the crack front was traversed from the surface to the mid-plane of the specimen. Mid-planeT ε * values tend to be approximately 10% of the surface values.  相似文献

The paper gives explicit expressions of the elastic T-stress components T I, T II, and T III for an elliptic crack in an unbounded body under uniform pressure and bending and expressions of all the T-stress components for parabolic and tunnel cracks under uniform loading. These formulas are derived by analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the stress components near the crack front using special harmonic functions. The dependence of the T-stresses on Poisson’s ratio, semiaxes and parametric angle of the elliptic crack is studied. The expressions of T I, T II, and T III for a penny-shaped crack under arbitrary uniform pressure and bending follow as a special case from the respective expressions for an elliptic crack __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika, Vol. 43, No. 8, pp. 57–70, August 2007.  相似文献

For a crack subjected to combined mode I and III loading the influence of a T-stress is analyzed, with focus on crack growth. The solid is a ductile metal modelled as elastic–plastic, and the fracture process is represented in terms of a cohesive zone model. The analyzes are carried out for conditions of small scale yielding, with the elastic solution applied as boundary conditions on the outer edge of the region analyzed. For several combinations of the stress intensity factors KI and KIII and the T-stress crack growth resistance curves are calculated numerically in order to determine the fracture toughness. In all situations it is found that a negative T-stress adds to the fracture toughness, whereas a positive T-stress has rather little effect. For given values of KI and T the minimum fracture toughness corresponds to KIII = 0.  相似文献

We consider the onset of convection in a porous medium heated from below and subjected to a horizontal mean flow. The effect of porous inertia is studied, and the transverse aspect ratio a of the medium is taken into accout. We find that the dominant modes are longitudinal rolls (L.R) if a is an integer or transverse traveling rolls (T.R) if a is below ac with ac<1. When a is not an integer with a>ac, the setting on patterns are oscillatory three-dimensional structures (3D) for a>1 or T.R for ac<a<1 provided that the Reynolds number remains below a critical value ReK*. We show that these structures are replaced by L.R if ReK>ReK*. To cite this article: A. Delache et al., C. R. Mecanique 330 (2002) 885–891.  相似文献

Determined are the critical crzes and crack growth characteristics for train car wheels and rails. Service and test limit size of cracks need to be distinguished in view of the difference between subcritical and the onset of rapid crack propagation. Probabilistic calculations have many advantages, but they cannot accurately predict neither the real critical minimum crack size (ac)min nor the real maximum crack growth increment Δamax. As representative values of the minimum critical crack size ac* and maximum crack growth increment Δa* are chosen for the calculations, therefore, that values which have a survival and crack growth probability, respectively, of 90%. Safety factors S(a) and are needed to account for the scatter of ac and Δa for probabilities of more than 90%. Probabilistic fracture mechanics is applied to analyze the behavior of transverse cracks in the rim of tread-braked monobloc wheels, transverse head cracks in rails and aluminothermic rail welds. Two dimensional determination of the efficiency of cylindrical fins
Two dimensional steady-state fields of the temperature in cylindrical fins of rectangular or circular cross-sections are discribed by potential functions. The fin-efficiency is deducted from this. Assumption is that the heat transfer coefficients are constant and that the heat-conductivity is independent of the temperature.

This study investigates the enhancement of the laminar forced convection characteristics of backward-facing step flow in a two-dimensional channel through the installation of solid and slotted baffles onto the channel wall. The effects of the height of baffle H b, inclination of baffle installation ϕb, height of slot in baffle H t, inclination of slot in baffle ϕt, and distance between the backward-facing step and baffle D on the flow structure, temperature distribution and Nusselt number variation for the system at various Re are numerically explored. Results show that a slotted baffle can enhance the average Nusselt number for the heating section of channel plate by the maximum 190% when Pr=0.7, H s=0.5, L=5, H b ≤ 0.3, W b ≤ 0.2, 0.1 ≤ D ≤ 0.5, 0° ≤ ϕb ≤ 45°, H t ≤ 0.1, 0° ≤ ϕt ≤ 45° and 50 ≤ Re ≤ 400. As for the solid baffle, the enhancement may be up by 230%. The solid baffle might cause the re-separation of main stream, and consequently result in poor local heat transfer coefficient in the end region of heating section. This disadvantage can be obviously improved as the baffle is slotted. Besides the penalty of increase in pressure drop due to the baffle installation is much higher for the situation with solid baffle.  相似文献

Rheological and mechanical properties of aqueous mono-disperse silica suspensions (Ludox? HS40) are investigated as a function of particle volume fraction (ϕ p ranging from 0.22 to 0.51) and water content, using shear rate tests, oscillatory methods, indentation and an ultrasonic technique. As the samples are progressively dried, four regimes are identified; they are related to the increasing particle content and the existence and behaviour of the electrical double layer (EDL) around each particle. For 0.22 ≤ ϕ p ≤ 0.30), the suspensions are stable due to the strong electrostatic repulsion between particles and show Newtonian behaviour (I). As water is removed, the solution pH decreases and the ionic strength increases. The EDL thickness therefore slowly decreases, and screening of the electrostatic repulsion increases. For 0.31 ≤ ϕ p ≤ 0.35, the suspensions become turbid and exhibit viscoelastic (VE) shear thinning behaviour (II), as they progressively flocculate. For 0.35 ≤ ϕ p ≤ 0.47, the suspensions turn transparent again and paste-like, with VE shear thinning behaviour and high elastic modulus (III). At higher particle concentration, the suspensions undergo a glass transition and behave as an elastic brittle solid (IV, ϕ p = 0.51).  相似文献

Summary  The singular integral equation method is applied to the calculation of the stress intensity factor at the front of a rectangular crack subjected to mixed-mode load. The stress field induced by a body force doublet is used as a fundamental solution. The problem is formulated as a system of integral equations with r −3-singularities. In solving the integral equations, unknown functions of body-force densities are approximated by the product of polynomial and fundamental densities. The fundamental densities are chosen to express two-dimensional cracks in an infinite body for the limiting cases of the aspect ratio of the rectangle. The present method yields rapidly converging numerical results and satisfies boundary conditions all over the crack boundary. A smooth distribution of the stress intensity factor along the crack front is presented for various crack shapes and different Poisson's ratio. The character of the local stresses and displacements are determined for a through crack with finite radius of curvature in a finite thickness plate. Numerical results obtained from the boundary element method show that the solutions are sufficiently accurate for /a ≤ 0.03 and 0.03 ≤ /a ≤ 0.1, where and a represent, respectively, the crack front radius of curvature and crack dimension such that a is the width of a through thickness crack and the depth of a part-through crack. For /a ≤ 0.1, the asymptotic singular stress field dominates such that the Mode I stress intensity factor K1 can be evaluated. As the crack border radius of curvature is increased for /a ≥ 0.1, the non-singular terms become significant such that KI would no longer dominate. Other failure criteria would have to be invoked to address fracture initiation.  相似文献

The optimal dimensions of convective-radiating circular fins with variable profile, heat-transfer coefficient and thermal conductivity, as well as internal heat generation are obtained. A profile of the form y=(w/2) [1+(r o/r) n ] is studied, while variation of thermal conductivity is of the form k=k o[1+ɛ((TT )/ (T bT )) m ]. The heat-transfer coefficient is assumed to vary according to a power law with distance from the bore, expressed as h=K[(rr o)/(r er o)]λ. The results for λ=0 to λ=1.9, and −0.4≤ɛ≤0.4, have been expressed by suitable dimensionless parameters. A correlation for the optimal dimensions of a constant and variable profile fins is presented in terms of reduced heat-transfer rate. It is found that a (quadratic) hyperbolic circular fin with n=2 gives an optimum performance. The effect of radiation on the fin performance is found to be considerable for fins operating at higher base temperatures, whereas the effect of variable thermal conductivity on the optimal dimensions is negligible for the variable profile fin. It is also observed, in general, that the optimal fin length and the optimal fin base thickness are greater when compared to constant fin thickness. Received on 22 February 1999  相似文献

A full field solution, based on small deformation, three-dimensional elastic–plastic finite element analysis of the centrally cracked thin disk under mode I loading has been performed. The solution for the stresses under small-scale yielding and lo!cally fully plastic state has been compared with the HRR plane stress solution. At the outside of the 3D zone, within a distance of rσo/J=18, HRR dominance is maintained in the presence of a significant amount of compressive stress along the crack flanks. Ahead of this region, the HRR field overestimate the stresses. These results demonstrate a completely reversed state of stress in the near crack front compared to that in the plane strain case. The combined effect of geometry and finite thickness of the specimen on elastic–plastic crack tip stress field has been explored. To the best of our knowledge, such an attempt in the published literature has not been made yet. For the qualitative assessment of the results some of the field parameters have been compared to the available experimental results of K, gives a fair estimate of the crack opening stress near the crack front at a distance of order 10−2 in. On the basis of this analysis, the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics approach has been adopted in analyzing the fatigue crack extension experiments performed in the disk (Part II).  相似文献

A perturbation technique developed by Karihaloo et al. is employed to obtain the stress intensity factors at the tip of a kinking crack that emanates from the free surface of a beam under pure bending. Under the condition that the kink extends in the direction of vanishing K11 the crack path is obtained as well as a path stability condition. From conditions on K1 a material parameter r* akin to that of Ramulu and Kobayashi's rc is obtained. By analysis of the slope of the kinking crack a stability condition is obtained corroborating the stability condition from consideration of vanishing K11. It is shown that for a beam in pure bending the nonsingular remote stress term T must be greater than some positive critical value for kinking to occur confirming the results of Sayir and Schindler.  相似文献

An investigation is presented on the suitability and accuracy of a thermoelastic technique for the analysis of fatigue cracks. The stress intensity factor ranges ΔK I and ΔK II are determined from thermoelastic data recorded from around the tip of a sharp slot in a steel specimen under biaxial load, in order to assess the accuracy of the technique. ΔK I and ΔK II are determined to within 4% and 9% of a theoretical prediction, respectively. The results from a similar test on a fatigue crack under biaxial load are also presented. These show that thermoelastic stress analysis is a rapid and accurate way of analyzing mixed-mode fatigue cracks. A discussion is given on the potential of thermoelastic stress analysis of propagating cracks.  相似文献

Using the technique of Dimensional Analysis the phenomenon of crack closure is modelled using the concept of a contact stress intensity factor Kc. For constant amplitude loading, a simple expression, Kcmax = g(R) ΔK, is obtained without making idealized assumptions concerning crack tip behaviour. Further, by assuming that crack closure arises from the interaction of residual plasticity in the wake of the crack and crack tip compressive stresses, the function g(R) is shown to be constant for non-workhardening materials. This implies that any dependency of Kcmax on R must be attributed to the workhardening characteristic of the material. With Kc known, an “effective” stress intensity factor Ke may be calculated and incorporated into a crack growth law of the form da/dn = f(ΔKe). From analysis, it can be deduced that for a workhardening material, Kcmax will decrease as R increases and the effective stress intensity factor will increase. This means that the fatigue crack propagation rate will increase with R, in accordance with experimental observations.  相似文献

Crack repair using an elastic filler   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effect of repairing a crack in an elastic body using an elastic filler is examined in terms of the stress intensity levels generated at the crack tip. The effect of the filler is to change the stress field singularity from order 1/r1/2 to 1/r(1-λ) where r is the distance from the crack tip, and λ is the solution to a simple transcendental equation. The singularity power (1-λ) varies from (the unfilled crack limit) to 1 (the fully repaired crack), depending primarily on the scaled shear modulus ratio γr defined by G2/G1=γrε, where 2πε is the (small) crack angle, and the indices (1, 2) refer to base and filler material properties, respectively. The fully repaired limit is effectively reached for γr≈10, so that fillers with surprisingly small shear modulus ratios can be effectively used to repair cracks. This fits in with observations in the mining industry, where materials with G2/G1 of the order of 10-3 have been found to be effective for stabilizing the walls of tunnels. The results are also relevant for the repair of cracks in thin elastic sheets.  相似文献

A novel experimental technique for measuring crack tipT-stress, and hence in-plane crack tip constraint, in elastic materials has been developed. The method exploits optimal positioning of stacked strain gage rosette near a mode I crack tip such that the influence of dominant singular strains is negated in order to determineT-stress accurately. The method is demonstrated for quasi-static and low-velocity impact loading conditions and two values of crack length to plate width ratios (a/W). By coupling this new method with the Dally-Sanford single strain gage method for measuring the mode I stress intensity factorK I , the crack tip biaxiality parameter is also measured experimentally. Complementary small strain, static and dynamic finite element simulations are carried out under plane stress conditions. Time histories ofK I andT-stress are computed by regression analysis of the displacement and stress fields, respectively. The experimental results are in good agreement with those obtained from numerical simulations. Preliminary data for critical values ofK I and β for dynamic experiments involving epoxy specimens are reported. Dynamic crack initiation toughness shows an increasing trend as β becomes more negative at higher impact velocities.  相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of twisting a non-homogeneous, isotropic, half-space by rotating a circular part of its boundary surface (0 r < a, z = 0) through a given angle. A ring (a < r < b, z = 0) outside the circle is stress-free and the remaining part (r > b, z = 0) is rigidly clamped. The shear modulus is assumed to vary with the cylindrical coordinates, r, z by the relation (z) = 1(c + z), c 0 where 1, c and are real constants. Expressions for some quantities of physical importance, such as torque applied at the surface of the disk and stress intensity factors, are obtained. The effects of non-homogeneity on torque and stress intensity factor are illustrated graphically.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical analysis of the momentum and heat transfer of an incompressible fluid past a parallel moving sheet based on composite reference velocity U is carried out. A single set of equations has been formulated for both momentum and thermal boundary layer problems containing the following parameters: r the ratio of the free stream velocity to the composite reference velocity, σ (Prandtl number) the ratio of the momentum diffusivity of the fluid to its thermal diffusivity, and E c (E ck ) (Eckert number). The present study has been carried out in the domain 0 ≤ r ≤ 1. It is found that the direction of the wall shear changes in such an interval and an increase of the parameter r yields an increase in temperature.   相似文献
