Combined free and forced convection flow in a parallel plate vertical channel filled with porous matrix is analyzed in the fully developed region with boundary conditions of third kind. The flow is modeled using the Brinkman?CForchheimer-extended Darcy equations. The plates exchange heat with an external fluid. Both conditions of equal and different reference temperatures of the external fluid are considered. Governing equations are solved numerically by shooting technique that uses classical explicit Runge?CKutta scheme and Newton?CRaphson method as a correction scheme and analytically using perturbation series method for Darcy model. The velocity field, the temperature field and Nusselt numbers are obtained for governing parameters such as porous parameter, inertia term and perturbation parameter for equal and unequal Biot numbers and are displayed graphically. The dimensionless mean velocity and bulk temperature are also determined. It is found that the numerical solutions agree for small values of the perturbation parameter in the absence of the inertial forces.

The effects of viscous dissipation and heat source/sink on fully developed mixed convection for the laminar flow in a parallel-plate vertical channel are investigated. The plate exchanges heat with an external fluid. Both conditions of equal and different reference temperatures of the external fluid are considered.First, the simple cases of the negligible Brinkman number or the negligible Grashof number are solved analytically. Then, the combined effects of buoyancy forces and viscous dissipation in the presence of heat source/sink are analyzed by a perturbation series method valid for small values of the perturbation parameter. To relax the conditions on the perturbation parameter, the velocity and temperature fields are solved by using the Runge-Kutta fourth-order method with the shooting technique. The velocity, temperature, skin friction, and Nusselt numbers at the plates are discussed numerically and presented through graphs.

An analysis of fully developed combined free and forced convective flow in a fluid saturated porous medium channel bounded by two vertical parallel plates is presented. The flow is modeled using Brinkman equation model. The viscous and Darcy dissipation terms are also included in the energy equation. Three types of thermal boundary conditions such as isothermal–isothermal, isoflux–isothermal, and isothermal–isoflux for the left–right walls of the channel are considered. Analytical solutions for the governing ordinary differential equations are obtained by perturbation series method. In addition, closed form expressions for the Nusselt number at both the left and right channel walls are derived. Results have been presented for a wide range of governing parameters such as porous parameter, ratio of Grashof number and Reynolds number, viscosity ratio, width ratio, and conductivity ratio on velocity, and temperature fields. It is found that the presence of porous matrix in one of the region reduces the velocity and temperature.

The problem of combined free and forced convective magnetohydrodynamic flow in a vertical channel is analysed by taking into account the effect of viscous and ohmic dissipations. The channel walls are maintained at equal or at different constant temperatures. The velocity field and the temperature field are obtained analytically by perturbation series method and numerically by finite difference technique. The results are presented for various values of the Brinkman number and the ratio of Grashof number to the Reynolds number for both equal and different wall temperatures. Nusselt number at the walls is determined. It is found that the viscous dissipation enhances the flow reversal in the case of downward flow while it counters the flow in the case of upward flow. It is also found that the analytical and numerical solutions agree very well for small values of ε.

The peristaltic flow of a Johnson-Segalman fluid in a planar channel is investigated in an induced magnetic field with the slip condition. The symmetric nature of the flow in a channel is utilized. The velocity slip condition in terms of shear stresses is considered. The mathematical formulation is presented, and the equations are solved under long wavelength and low Reynolds number approximations. The perturbation solutions are established for the pressure, the axial velocity, the micro-rotation component, the stream function, the magnetic-force function, the axial induced magnetic field, and the current distribution across the channel. The solution expressions for small Weissenberg numbers are derived. The flow quantities of interest are sketched and analyzed.

A numerical procedure is developed for the analysis of flow in a channel whose walls describe a travelling wave motion. Following a perturbation method, the primitive variables are expanded in a series with the wall amplitude as the perturbation parameter. The boundary conditions are applied at the mean surface of the channel and the first-order perturbation quantities are calculated using the pseudospectral collocation method. Although limited by the linear analysis, the present approach is not restricted by the Reynolds number of the flow and the wave number and frequency of the wavy-walled channel. Using the computed wall shear stresses, the positions of flow separation and reattachment are determined. The variations in velocity and pressure with frequency of excitation are also presented.

The particulate suspension flow in a channel whose walls describe a travelling wave motion is examined numerically. A perturbation method is employed and the primitive variables are expanded in a series with the wall amplitude as the perturbation parameter. The boundary conditions are applied at the mean surface of the channel and the first‐order perturbation quantities are numerically determined by solving the governing system of ordinary differential equations by shooting technique. The present approach does not impose any restriction on the Reynolds number of the flow and the wave number and frequency of the wavy‐walled channel, although it is limited by the linear analysis. The wall shear stress and the positions of flow separation and reattachment points are computed and the influence of the volume fraction density of the particles is examined. The variations of velocity and pressure of the particulate suspension flow with frequency of excitation are also presented. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The propagation of acoustic perturbations (specified in the outlet cross section of a particular channel) along a supersonic jet flowing out of the channel is considered; also considered is acoustic emission from the surface of the jet into the atmosphere. The solution of these problems is obtained by a numerical method on the linear approximation. The laws governing the propagation of the perturbations as a function of the perturbation frequency and other determining parameters are investigated; these parameters include the velocity and temperature of the jet, the velocity of the subsonic accompanying flow in the external medium, and the character of the perturbation in the initial cross section of the jet.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 2, pp. 92–99, March–April, 1977.

A numerical study of mixed convection in a vertical channel filled with a porous medium including the effect of inertial forces is studied by taking into account the effect of viscous and Darcy dissipations. The flow is modeled using the Brinkman–Forchheimer-extended Darcy equations. The two boundaries are considered as isothermal–isothermal, isoflux–isothermal and isothermal–isoflux for the left and right walls of the channel and kept either at equal or at different temperatures. The governing equations are solved numerically by finite difference method with Southwell–Over–Relaxation technique for extended Darcy model and analytically using perturbation series method for Darcian model. The velocity and temperature fields are obtained for various porous parameter, inertia effect, product of Brinkman number and Grashof number and the ratio of Grashof number and Reynolds number for equal and different wall temperatures. Nusselt number at the walls is also determined for three types of thermal boundary conditions. The viscous dissipation enhances the flow reversal in the case of downward flow while it counters the flow in the case of upward flow. The Darcy and inertial drag terms suppress the flow. It is found that analytical and numerical solutions agree very well for the Darcian model. An erratum to this article is available at .

This paper discusses the effects of a vertical a.c. electric field and heat transfer on a peristaltic flow of an incompressible dielectric viscoelastic fluid in a symmetric flexible channel. The mathematical modeling includes interactions among the electric field, flow field, and temperature. The perturbation solution of the modeled problem is derived by considering a small wave number. The influence of pertinent parameters is demonstrated and discussed. The numerical results show that the possibility of flow reversal increases near the lower bound of the channel and decreases near the upper bound of the channel as the electrical Rayleigh number, the Reynolds number, and the Weissenberg number increase, whereas the opposite effect is observed as the temperature parameter and the Weissenberg number increase. It is observed that the size of the trapped bolus decreases at the upper bound of the channel and increases at the lower bound of the channel with increasing electrical Rayleigh number, whereas the opposite effect is observed as the temperature parameter increases. The results also show that the trapped bolus in the case of an Oldroydian fluid is smaller than that for a Newtonian fluid.

This paper aims to examine variable viscosity effects on peristalsis of Sisko fluids in a curved channel with compliant characteristics. Viscous dissipation in a heat transfer is studied. The resulting problems are solved using perturbation and numerical schemes to show qualitatively similar responses for velocity and temperature. A streamline phenomenon is also considered.

In this paper the heat transfer from a solid spherical particle translating at low Reynolds number is analytically examined for the limit of vanishing Peclet number. The temperature distribution within the solid sphere is treated as fully transient while the fluid phase is considered to be quasisteady. The temperature field in the dispersed phase is obtained by a singular perturbation expansion of the Acrivos-Taylor type. The time-dependence in the solid phase is handled by means of the Laplace transform. This approach allows the temperature and heat flux continuity conditions at the solid-liquid interface to be exactly satisfied. The solution in the time domain appears in the form of infinite series which have associated with them a set of eigenvalues for every order of the perturbation expansion. The Nusselt number to orderPe, however, depends only on the leading order eigenvalues. An analytical limit of the Nusselt number for large values of time is also obtained.

The combined influence of viscosity, Hall effect and ion slip on hydrodynamic fields and on heat transfer is investigated. The exact solutions for velocity, induced magnetic field and temperature are derived for the laminar MHD flow in a flat channel assuming a small magnetic Reynolds number, finely segmented electrodes, fully developed flow and uniform heat flux at channel walls. The internal generation of heat is not considered. The Kantorowitsch method of variational calculus is employed to approximate the complicated velocity distribution.

The problem of a two-dimensional steady flow of a second-grade fluid in a converging porous channel is considered. It is assumed that the fluid is injected into the channel through one wall and sucked from the channel through the other wall at the same velocity, which is inversely proportional to the distance along the wall from the channel origin. The equations governing the flow are reduced to ordinary differential equations. The boundary-value problem described by the latter equations is solved by the homotopy perturbation method. The effects of the Reynolds and crossflow Reynolds number on the flow characteristics are examined.

An analysis has been carried out to study the effect of magnetic field on an electrically conducting fluid of second grade in a parallel channel. The coolant fluid is injected into the porous channel through one side of the channel wall into the other heated impermeable wall. The combined effect of inertia, viscous, viscoelastic and magnetic forces are studied. The basic equations governing the flow and heat transfer are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations by using appropriate transformations for velocity and temperature. Numerical solutions of these equations are obtained with the help of Runge-Kutta fourth order method in association with quasi-linear shooting technique. Numerical results for velocity field, temperature field, skin friction and Nusselt number are presented in terms of elastic parameter, Hartmann number, Prandtl number and Reynolds number. Special case of our results is in good agreement with earlier published work.

Summary The two-dimensional steady flow of an incompressible and electrically conducting viscous fluid through a porous channel with a transverse magnetic field is discussed. It is assumed that there is constant suction at one wall and constant blowing at the other wall. A perturbation solution is obtained where the perturbation parameter is equal to the difference between the two wall velocities. The behaviour of the solution for various suction Reynolds numbers and magnetic Reynolds number is considered. Finally, the skin friction at one wall is given and is found to increase with the increase of the magnetic field.

In this work, a powerful semi-analytical method, called Adomian decomposition method (ADM) is introduced to obtain the exact solution of heat transfer equation of a non-Newtonian fluid flow in an axisymmetric channel with a porous wall which is useful for turbine cooling applications. This method is employed to obtain the expressions for velocity and temperature fields. Then, the influence of the two dimensionless numbers: the Prandtl number (Pr) and the Reynolds number (Re) for the dynamic forces have been considered. Comparisons are made between the numerical method (NM) solution, Homotopy perturbation method (HPM), Variation iteration method (VIM) and the results of Adomian decomposition method (ADM). The results reveal that this method is very effective and simple and can be applied for other nonlinear problems.

An exact and a numerical solutions to the problem of a steady mixed convective MHD flow of an incompressible viscous electrically conducting fluid past an infinite vertical porous plate with combined heat and mass transfer are presented.A uniform magnetic field is assumed to be applied transversely to the direction of the flow with the consideration of the induced magnetic field with viscous and magnetic dissipations of energy. The porous plate is subjected to a constant suction velocity as well as a uniform mixed stream velocity. The governing equations are solved by the perturbation technique and a numerical method. The analytical expressions for the velocity field, the temperature field, the induced magnetic field, the skin-friction,and the rate of heat transfer at the plate are obtained. The numerical results are demonstrated graphically for various values of the parameters involved in the problem. The effects of the Hartmann number, the chemical reaction parameter, the magnetic Prandtl number, and the other parameters involved in the velocity field, the temperature field, the concentration field, and the induced magnetic field from the plate to the fluid are discussed. An increase in the heat source/sink or the Eckert number is found to strongly enhance the fluid velocity values. The induced magnetic field along the x-direction increases with the increase in the Hartmann number, the magnetic Prandtl number, the heat source/sink,and the viscous dissipation. It is found that the flow velocity, the fluid temperature, and the induced magnetic field decrease with the increase in the destructive chemical reaction.Applications of the study arise in the thermal plasma reactor modelling, the electromagnetic induction, the magnetohydrodynamic transport phenomena in chromatographic systems, and the magnetic field control of materials processing.
