We consider an elliptic perturbation problem in a circle by using the analytical solution that is given by a Fourier series with coefficients in terms of modified Bessel functions. By using saddle point methods we construct asymptotic approximations with respect to a small parameter. In particular we consider approximations that hold uniformly in the boundary layer, which is located along a certain part of the boundary of the domain.  相似文献

We give an overview of basic methods that can be used for obtaining asymptotic expansions of integrals: Watson’s lemma, Laplace’s method, the saddle point method, and the method of stationary phase. Certain developments in the field of asymptotic analysis will be compared with De Bruijn’s book Asymptotic Methods in Analysis. The classical methods can be modified for obtaining expansions that hold uniformly with respect to additional parameters. We give an overview of examples in which special functions, such as the complementary error function, Airy functions, and Bessel functions, are used as approximations in uniform asymptotic expansions.  相似文献

The usual tools for computing special functions are power series, asymptotic expansions, continued fractions, differential equations, recursions, and so on. Rather seldom are methods based on quadrature of integrals. Selecting suitable integral representations of special functions, using principles from asymptotic analysis, we develop reliable algorithms which are valid for large domains of real or complex parameters. Our present investigations include Airy functions, Bessel functions and parabolic cylinder functions. In the case of Airy functions we have improvements in both accuracy and speed for some parts of Amos's code for Bessel functions.  相似文献

A standard method for computing values of Bessel functions has been to use the well-known ascending series for small argument, and to use an asymptotic series for large argument; with the choice of the series changing at some appropriate argument magnitude, depending on the number of digits required. In a recent paper, D. Borwein, J. Borwein, and R. Crandall [D. Borwein, J.M. Borwein, R. Crandall, Effective Laguerre asymptotics, preprint at http://locutus.cs.dal.ca:8088/archive/00000334/] derived a series for an “exp-arc” integral which gave rise to an absolutely convergent series for the J and I Bessel functions with integral order. Such series can be rapidly evaluated via recursion and elementary operations, and provide a viable alternative to the conventional ascending-asymptotic switching. In the present work, we extend the method to deal with Bessel functions of general (non-integral) order, as well as to deal with the Y and K Bessel functions.  相似文献

Asymptotic expansions are given for large values of n of the generalized Bessel polynomials . The analysis is based on integrals that follow from the generating functions of the polynomials. A new simple expansion is given that is valid outside a compact neighborhood of the origin in the z-plane. New forms of expansions in terms of elementary functions valid in sectors not containing the turning points zi/n are derived, and a new expansion in terms of modified Bessel functions is given. Earlier asymptotic expansions of the generalized Bessel polynomials by Wong and Zhang (1997) and Dunster (2001) are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Schlömilch's series is named after the German mathematician Oscar Xavier Schlömilch, who derived it in 1857 as a Fourier series type expansion in terms of the Bessel function of the first kind. However, except for Bessel functions, here we consider an expansion in terms of Struve functions or Bessel and Struve integrals as well. The method for obtaining a sum of Schlömilch's series in terms of the Bessel or Struve functions is based on the summation of trigonometric series, which can be represented in terms of the Riemann zeta and related functions of reciprocal powers and in certain cases can be brought in the closed form, meaning that the infinite series are represented by finite sums. By using Krylov's method we obtain the convergence acceleration of the trigonometric series.  相似文献

The structured Bessel-type functions of arbitrary even-order were introduced by Everitt and Markett in 1994; these functions satisfy linear ordinary differential equations of the same even-order. The differential equations have analytic coefficients and are defined on the whole complex plane with a regular singularity at the origin and an irregular singularity at the point of infinity. They are all natural extensions of the classical second-order Bessel differential equation. Further these differential equations have real-valued coefficients on the positive real half-line of the plane, and can be written in Lagrange symmetric (formally self-adjoint) form. In the fourth-order case, the Lagrange symmetric differential expression generates self-adjoint unbounded operators in certain Hilbert function spaces. These results are recorded in many of the papers here given as references. It is shown in the original paper of 1994 that in this fourth-order case one solution exists which can be represented in terms of the classical Bessel functions of order 0 and 1. The existence of this solution, further aided by computer programs in Maple, led to the existence of a linearly independent basis of solutions of the differential equation. In this paper a new proof of the existence of this solution base is given, on using the advanced theory of special functions in the complex plane. The methods lead to the development of analytical properties of these solutions, in particular the series expansions of all solutions at the regular singularity at the origin of the complex plane.  相似文献

We study asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials associated to the generalized Jacobi weight, which is a weight function with a finite number of algebraic singularities on [−1,1]. The recurrence coefficients can be written in terms of the solution of the corresponding Riemann–Hilbert (RH) problem for orthogonal polynomials. Using the steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou, we analyze the RH problem, and obtain complete asymptotic expansions of the recurrence coefficients. We will determine explicitly the order 1/n terms in the expansions. A critical step in the analysis of the RH problem will be the local analysis around the algebraic singularities, for which we use Bessel functions of appropriate order. In addition, the RH approach gives us also strong asymptotics of the orthogonal polynomials near the algebraic singularities in terms of Bessel functions.  相似文献

Taylor expansions of analytic functions are considered with respect to several points, allowing confluence of any of them. Cauchy-type formulas are given for coefficients and remainders in the expansions, and the regions of convergence are indicated. It is explained how these expansions can be used in deriving uniform asymptotic expansions of integrals. The method is also used for obtaining Laurent expansions in several points as well as Taylor-Laurent expansions.

The asymptotic behaviour of parabolic cylinder functions of large real order is considered. Various expansions in terms of elementary functions are derived. They hold uniformly for the variable in appropriate parts of the complex plane. Some of the expansions are doubly asymptotic with respect to the order and the complex variable which is an advantage for computational purposes. Error bounds are determined for the truncated versions of the asymptotic series.  相似文献

Based on a continuity property of the Hadamard product of power series we derive results concerning the rate of convergence of the partial sums of certain polynomial series expansions for Bessel functions. Since these partial sums are easily computable by recursion and since cancellation problems are considerably reduced compared to the corresponding Taylor sections, the expansions may be attractive for numerical purposes. A similar method yields results on series expansions for confluent hypergeometric functions. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Recently Pogány and Süli (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 137 (7) (2009) 2363-2368) derived a closed-form integral expression for Neumann series of Bessel functions. In this note we precisely characterize the class of functions α that generate the integral representation of a Neumann series of Bessel functions in the sense that the restriction αN|=(αn) of a function α to the set N of all positive integers is the sequence of coefficients of the initial Neumann series.  相似文献

The case of two parallel infinite dielectric cylinders, of equal diameter and dielectric constant, illuminated by a plane electromagnetic wave is studied. The scattered electric and magnetic fields from both cylinders can be expressed as infinite series involving Hankel functions, and the coefficients of both satisfy coupled systems (which involve Bessel and Hankel functions). It is shown how these systems can be decoupled, and then, in turn, solved explicitly by successive approximations. Under explicit conditions on the physical parameters of the problem, uniform convergence of the successive approximation series is rigorously proven. This is achieved by utilizing certain bounds on Bessel and Hankel functions, which are derived from asymptotic and integral representations.  相似文献

We show that an asymptotic summation method, recently proposed by the authors, can be conveniently applied to slowly convergent power series whose coefficients are rational functions of the summation index. Several numerical examples are presented.

We present new formulae (the Slevinsky–Safouhi formulae I and II) for the analytical development of higher order derivatives. These formulae, which are analytic and exact, represent the kth derivative as a discrete sum of only k+1 terms. Involved in the expression for the kth derivative are coefficients of the terms in the summation. These coefficients can be computed recursively and they are not subject to any computational instability. As examples of applications, we develop higher order derivatives of Legendre functions, Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, Hermite functions and Bessel functions. We also show the general classes of functions to which our new formula is applicable and show how our formula can be applied to certain classes of differential equations. We also presented an application of the formulae of higher order derivatives combined with extrapolation methods in the numerical integration of spherical Bessel integral functions.  相似文献

We examine a Maple implementation of two distinct approaches to Laplace's method used to obtain asymptotic expansions of Laplace-type integrals. One algorithm uses power series reversion, whereas the other expands all quantities in Taylor or Puiseux series. These algorithms are used to derive asymptotic expansions for the real valued modified Bessel functions of pure imaginary order and real argument that mimic the well-known corresponding expansions for the unmodified Bessel functions.  相似文献

Asymptotic solutions are derived for inhomogeneous differential equations having a large real or complex parameter and a simple turning point. They involve Scorer functions and three slowly varying analytic coefficient functions. The asymptotic approximations are uniformly valid for unbounded complex values of the argument, and are applied to inhomogeneous Airy equations having polynomial and exponential forcing terms. Error bounds are available for all approximations, including new simple ones for the well-known asymptotic expansions of Scorer functions of large complex argument.  相似文献

In this paper we explore higher order numerical quadrature for the integrations of systems containing Bessel, Anger and Weber functions. The method is constructed by finding the approximate solution of the differential equation and truncating the asymptotic series. Numerical examples based on theoretical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.  相似文献

This paper is motivated by an open problem of Luke’s theorem. We consider the problem of developing a unified point of view on the theory of inequalities of Humbert functions and of their general ratios are obtained. Some particular cases and refinements are given. Finally, we obtain some important results involving inequalities of Bessel and Whittaker’s functions as applications.  相似文献

It is shown in the Weyl limit‐point case that system of root functions of the non‐self‐adjoint Bessel operator and its perturbation Sturm–Liouville operator form a complete system in the Hilbert space. Furthermore, asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the non‐self‐adjoint Bessel operators is investigated, and it is proved that system of root functions form a Bari basis in the same Hilbert space.
