In this study, we systematically investigate the effect of core-scale heterogeneity on the performance of miscible CO2 flooding under various injection modes (secondary and tertiary). Manufactured heterogeneous core plugs are used to simulate vertical and horizontal heterogeneity that may be present in a reservoir. A sample with vertical heterogeneity (i.e. a layered sample) is constructed using two axially cut half plugs each with a distinctly different permeability value. In these samples, the permeability ratio (PR) defines the ratio between the permeabilities of adjacent half plugs. Horizontal heterogeneity (i.e. a composite sample) is introduced by stacking two or three short cylindrical core segments each with a different permeability value. Our special sample construction techniques have also enabled us to investigate the effect of permeability ratio and crossflow in layered samples and axial arrangement of core segments in composite samples on the ultimate recovery of the floods. Core flooding experiments are conducted with an n-Decane–brine–CO2 system at a pore pressure of 17.2 MPa and a temperature of 343 K. At this temperature, the minimum miscibility pressure of CO2 with n-Decane is 12.6–12.7 MPa so it is expected that at 17.2 MPa CO2 is fully miscible with n-Decane. The results obtained for both the composite and layered samples indicate that CO2 injection would achieve the highest recovery factor (RF) when performed under the secondary mode (e.g. layered: 79.00%, composite: 89.83%) compared with the tertiary mode (e.g. layered: 73.2%, composite: 86.2%). This may be attributed to the effect of water shielding which impedes the access of the injected CO2 to the residual oil under the tertiary injection mode. It is also found that the oil recovery from a layered sample decreases noticeably with an increase in the PR as higher PR makes the displacement more uneven due to CO2 channelling. The RFs of 93.4, 87.89, 77.9 and 69.8% correspond to PRs of 1, 2.5, 5, and 12.5, respectively. In addition, for the layered samples, crossflow was found to have an important role during the recovery process; however, due to excessive channelling, this effect tends to diminish as PR increases. Compared with the layered heterogeneity, the effect of composite heterogeneity on the RF seems to be very subtle as the RF is found to be almost independent from the permeability sequence along the length of a composite sample. This outcome may have been caused by the small diameter of the plugs resulting in invariable 1-D floods.  相似文献

The effects of capillary number Ca and viscosity ratio M on non-uniqueness of the relative permeability (RP) – wetting saturation (Sw) relationships of steady-state immiscible two-phase flow in the heterogeneous porous media are studied by a developed lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). In this work, it is suggested that the non-uniqueness of capillary number Ca and viscosity ratio M influencing RP–Sw curves is due to the presence of the heterogeneity of porous media. For the different Ca and M, the RP–Sw curves in the homogenous and heterogeneous porous media with the same porosity are discussed in detail. It is found that (1) the pore-size distributions in porous media have significant effect on the RPs of both wetting phase (WP) and non-wetting phase (NWP); (2) the heterogeneity of porous media has negative effect on the increment of the RP of NWP caused by the large capillary number. The lubricating effect is strongly dependent on pore-size distributions in porous media; and (3) the large viscosity ratio increases the RP of NWP, while it has little effect on the RP of WP. The effect on the RP of NWP may be magnified by the heterogeneity of porous media.  相似文献

A numerical investigation is performed on the electroosmotic flow (EOF) in a surface-modulated microchannel to induce enhanced solute mixing. The channel wall is modulated by placing surface-mounted obstacles of trigonometric shape along which the surface potential is considered to be different from the surface potential of the homogeneous part of the wall. The characteristics of the electrokinetic flow are governed by the Laplace equation for the distribution of external electric potential; the Poisson equation for the distribution of induced electric potential; the Nernst–Planck equations for the distribution of ions; and the Navier–Stokes equations for fluid flow simultaneously. These nonlinear coupled set of governing equations are solved numerically by a control volume method over the staggered system. The influence of the geometric modulation of the surface, surface potential heterogeneity and the bulk ionic concentration on the EOF is analyzed. Vortical flow develops near a surface modulation, and it becomes stronger when the surface potential of the modulated region is in opposite sign to the surface potential of the homogeneous part of the channel walls. Vortical flow also depends on the Debye length when the Debye length is in the order of the channel height. Pressure drop along the channel length is higher for a ribbed wall channel compared to the grooved wall case. The pressure drop decreases with the increase in the amplitude for a grooved channel, but increases for a ribbed channel. The mixing index is quantified through the standard deviation of the solute distribution. Our results show that mixing index is higher for the ribbed channel compared to the grooved channel with heterogeneous surface potential. The increase in potential heterogeneity in the modulated region also increases the mixing index in both grooved and ribbed channels. However, the mixing performance, which is the ratio of the mixing index to pressure drop, reduces with the rise in the surface potential heterogeneity.  相似文献

The Portevin–Le Châtelier (PLC) instability is commonly observed in Al–Mg alloys and is manifested in serrated flow within the stress–strain response. We investigate the persistence of this instability with reduction in grain size by studying an ultrafine-grained (ufg) aluminum alloy (Al5083) and a conventional grain size Al5083. Micro-scale tensile tests combined with digital image correlation (DIC) reveal strength anisotropy and heterogeneity of the deformation in the three material directions (extrusion, rolled, and transverse). For the same applied displacement rate, the PLC effect in ufg-Al5083 is observed only over a small strain range immediately following the yield, while the coarse-grained Al5083 exhibits serrated flow over nearly the entire plastic strain range. These observations are explained using the stability analysis of Hähner (Acta Mater 45:3695–3707, 1997), and implications for nanocrystalline (nc) alloys are discussed.  相似文献

Different modeling strategies are tested for the prediction of texture development and microscopic strain heterogeneity in cold-rolled ULC steel and in multiphase steel under uniaxial tension. The polycrystalline aggregate is represented by a finite element mesh that is loaded under periodic boundary conditions. Grains are shaped as cubes or as truncated octahedrons, defining three levels of mesh refinement. Simulations rely on a simplified implementation of crystal plasticity, in which elastic strains are considered infinitesimal. The constitutive law is integrated fully implicitly in a reference frame bounded to the crystal lattice. Accuracy of the time-integration procedure is assessed by referring to some predictions of the crystal plasticity algorithm developed by Kalidindi et al. [Crystallographic texture evolution in bulk deformation processing of FCC metals. J. Mech. Phys. Solid 40 (1992) 537–569]. Then, results of the micro–macro modeling are compared to experimental data. It is found that the simulations with truncated octahedral grains yield improved predictions compared to those with cuboidal grains.  相似文献

The effects of hydrodynamic and thermal heterogeneity, for the case of variation in both the horizontal and vertical directions, on the onset of convection in a horizontal layer of a saturated porous medium uniformly heated from below, are studied analytically using linear stability theory for the case of weak heterogeneity. Attention is focused on the case of constant flux upper and lower boundaries, a case for which the critical horizontal wavenumber is zero, and attention is also concentrated on the case of a shallow layer. It is found that the effect of such heterogeneity on the critical value of the Rayleigh number Ra based on mean properties is of second order if the properties vary in a piecewise constant or linear fashion. The effects of horizontal heterogeneity and vertical heterogeneity are then comparable once the aspect ratio is taken into account, and to a first approximation are independent. The combination of permeability heterogeneity and conductivity heterogeneity can be either stabilizing or destabilizing for the present case.  相似文献

The effects of both horizontal and vertical hydrodynamic, thermal and solutal heterogeneity, on the onset of convection in a horizontal layer of a saturated porous medium uniformly heated from below, are studied analytically using linear stability theory for the case of weak heterogeneity. The Brinkman model is employed. 相似文献

The present study deals with free vibration analysis of variable thickness viscoelastic circular plates made of heterogeneous materials and resting on two-parameter elastic foundations in addition to their edge conditions. It is assumed that the viscoelastic material properties vary in the transverse and radial directions simultaneously. The complex modulus approach is employed in conjunction with the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle to obtain the solution. The governing equations are solved by means of a power series solution. Finally,a sensitivity analysis including evaluation of effects of various edge conditions, thickness variations, coefficients of the elastic foundation, and material loss factor and heterogeneity on the natural frequencies and modal loss factors is accomplished.  相似文献

We examine the effect of capillary and viscous forces on the displacement of one fluid by a second, immiscible fluid across and along parallel layers of contrasting porosity, and relative permeability, as well as previously explored contrasts in absolute permeability and capillary pressure. We consider displacements with wetting, intermediate-wetting and non-wetting injected phases. Flow is characterized using six independent dimensionless numbers and a dimensionless storage efficiency, which is numerically equivalent to the recovery efficiency. Results are directly applicable to geologic carbon storage and hydrocarbon production. We predict how the capillary–viscous force balance influences storage efficiency as a function of a small number of key dimensionless parameters, and provide a framework to support mechanistic interpretations of complex field or experimental data, and numerical model predictions, through the use of simple dimensionless models. When flow is directed across layers, we find that capillary heterogeneity traps the non-wetting phase, regardless of whether it is the injected or displaced phase. However, minimal trapping occurs when the injected phase is intermediate-wetting or when high-permeability layers contain a smaller moveable volume of fluid than low-permeability layers. A dimensionless capillary-to-viscous number defined using the layer thickness rather than the more commonly used system length is most relevant to predict capillary heterogeneity trapping. When flow is directed along layers, we show that, regardless of wettability, increasing capillary crossflow reduces the distance between the leading edges of the injected phase in each layer and increases storage efficiency. This may be counter-intuitive when the injected phase is non-wetting. Crossflow has a significant impact on storage efficiency only when high-permeability layers contain a smaller moveable volume of fluid than low-permeability layers. In that case, capillary heterogeneity traps the wetting phase, regardless of whether it is the injected or displaced phase.  相似文献

Fluid flow and solute transport in a 3D rough-walled fracture–matrix system were simulated by directly solving the Navier–Stokes equations for fracture flow and solving the transport equation for the whole domain of fracture and matrix with considering matrix diffusion. The rough-walled fracture–matrix model was built from laser-scanned surface tomography of a real rock sample, by considering realistic features of surfaces roughness and asperity contacts. The numerical modeling results were compared with both analytical solutions based on simplified fracture surface geometry and numerical results by particle tracking based on the Reynolds equation. The aim is to investigate impacts of surface roughness on solute transport in natural fracture–matrix systems and to quantify the uncertainties in application of simplified models. The results show that fracture surface roughness significantly increases heterogeneity of velocity field in the rough-walled fractures, which consequently cause complex transport behavior, especially the dispersive distributions of solute concentration in the fracture and complex concentration profiles in the matrix. Such complex transport behaviors caused by surface roughness are important sources of uncertainty that needs to be considered for modeling of solute transport processes in fractured rocks. The presented direct numerical simulations of fluid flow and solute transport serve as efficient numerical experiments that provide reliable results for the analysis of effective transmissivity as well as effective dispersion coefficient in rough-walled fracture–matrix systems. Such analysis is helpful in model verifications, uncertainty quantifications and design of laboratorial experiments.  相似文献

The effect of strong throughflow and strong heterogeneity on the onset of convection induced by a vertical density gradient in a saturated porous medium governed by Darcy’s law is investigated. The general case, where there is heterogeneity in both the vertical and horizontal directions, and where there is heterogeneity in permeability, thermal conductivity, and applied temperature gradient, is considered. A computer package has been extended to deal with the case of vertical throughflow.  相似文献

This paper presents a mixed numerical–experimental method for the identification of the four in-plane orthotropic engineering constants of composite plate materials. A biaxial tensile test is performed on a cruciform test specimen. The heterogeneous displacement field is observed by a CCD camera and measured by a digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The measured displacement field and the subsequently computed strain field are compared with a finite element simulation of the same experiment. The four independent engineering constants are unknown parameters in the finite element model. Starting from an initial value, these parameters are updated till the computed strain field matches the experimental strain field. Two specimen geometries are used: one with a centered hole to increase the strain heterogeneity and one without a hole. It is found that the non-perforated specimen yields the most accurate results.  相似文献

Effects of capillary heterogeneity at the macroscopic scale have previously been analyzed for static conditions or in the context of outflow end-effects. This paper presents a systematic study for the case of one-dimensional, steady-state flow, that complements recent work on transient displacement. We consider the saturation response to various forms of heterogeneity. Included are analytical results for certain model cases, some general results, and numerical solutions for variously correlated spatial variations. The sensitivity to process parameters, such as rate, heterogeneity length scale and correlation, is studied. Physical interpretations are offered and potential applications in the estimation of heterogeneity are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of strong throughflow and strong heterogeneity on the onset of convection induced by a vertical density gradient in a saturated porous medium governed by Darcy’s law is investigated with the aid of a computer package. The general case, where there is heterogeneity in both the vertical and horizontal directions, and where there is heterogeneity in permeability, thermal conductivity, and applied temperature gradient, is considered. Previous work on the case of non-periodic global variation is now extended to the case of either periodic variation or localized variation.  相似文献

This paper presents a new heterogeneous multiscale modeling method for porous media flows. Physics at the global level is governed by one set of PDEs, while features in the solution that are beyond the resolution capacity of the global model are accounted for by the next refined set of governing equations. In this method, the global or coarse model is given by the Darcy equation, while the local or refined model is given by the Darcy–Stokes equation. Concurrent domain decomposition where global and local models are applied to adjacent subdomains, as well as overlapping domain decomposition where global and local models coexist on overlapping domains, is considered. An interface operator is developed for the case where global and local models commute along the common interface. For the overlapping decomposition, a residual‐based coupling technique is developed that consistently facilitates bottom‐up embedding of scale effects from the local Darcy–Stokes model into the global Darcy model. Numerical results are presented for nonoverlapping and overlapping domain decompositions for various benchmark problems. Computed results show that the hierarchically coupled models accurately account for the heterogeneity of the medium and efficiently incorporate local features into the global response. In this paper, we propose a coupled awareness—epidemic spreading model considering the heterogeneity of individual influences, which aims to explore the interaction between awareness diffusion and epidemic transmission. The considered heterogeneities of individual influences are threefold: the heterogeneity of individual influences in the information layer, the heterogeneity of individual influences in the epidemic layer and the heterogeneity of individual behavioral responses to epidemics. In addition, the individuals’ receptive preference for information and the impacts of individuals’ perceived local awareness ratio and individuals’ perceived epidemic severity on self-protective behavior are included. The epidemic threshold is theoretically established by the microscopic Markov chain approach and the mean-field approach. Results indicate that the critical local and global awareness ratios have two-stage effects on the epidemic threshold. Besides, either the heterogeneity of individual influences in the information layer or the strength of individuals’ responses to epidemics can influence the epidemic threshold with a nonlinear way. However, the heterogeneity of individual influences in the epidemic layer has few effect on the epidemic threshold, but can affects the magnitude of the final infected density.
