This paper is concerned with the fracture of a fiber embedded in a matrix of finite radius. There is a periodic array of cracks in the fiber along the central axis of the medium. The paper accounts for the cases of axial extension and residual temperature change of the composite medium. Fourier and Hankel transforms are used to reduce the problem to the solution of a system of dual integral equations, which are solved by the singular integral equation technique. Rigorous fracture mechanics analysis, which exactly satisfies all boundary conditions of the problem, is conducted. Numerical solutions for the crack tip field and the stress in the fiber are obtained for various values such as crack radius, crack spacing and fiber volume fraction.  相似文献

The effective elastic properties of a polycrystalline material depend on the single crystal elastic constants of the crystallites comprising the polycrystal and on the manner in which the crystallites are arranged. In this paper we apply the techniques of homogenization to put the problem of determining effective elastic constants in a precise mathematical framework that permits us to derive an expression for the effective elasticity tensor. We also study how the homogenized elasticity tensor changes as the probability characterizing the ensemble changes. Under the assumption that the field of orientations of the crystallographic axes of the crystallites is an independent random field, we show that our theory is compatible with the formulation used in texture analysis. In particular, we are able to prove that the physical assumption made by [10] in his study of weakly-textured polycrystals holds true. In addition, we establish some elementary bounds on the material constants that characterize the effective elasticity tensor of weakly-textured orthorhombic aggregates of cubic crystallites. A particle–resin suspension impregnation model is used for analyzing the mold filling process in compression resin transfer molding (CRTM) of particle-filled, continuous fiber composites. The model is based on Darcy flow coupled with particle filtration and is applicable to two-dimensional impregnation through isotropic/anisotropic fiber preforms. Comparisons with simple analytical solutions and experimental results from the literature were made to validate the numerical solution. Simulations showed that CRTM was advantageous over resin transfer molding (RTM) for smaller non-homogeneity in composite microstructure, when particle filtration was high. Limits on certain process parameters were observed beyond which molding pressures in CRTM became comparable with those in RTM. The preform anisotropy was effective in the particle distribution profile. The choice of inlet gate configuration in CRTM was found influential in the particle distribution homogeneity and molding pressures. The developed modeling tool can be extended to analyze any composite liquid molding process involving particle fillers.  相似文献

The rotational dispersion coefficient of the fiber in the turbulent shear flow of fiber suspension was studied theoretically. The function of correlation moment between the different fluctuating velocity gradients of the flow was built firstly. Then the expres- sion, dependent on the characteristic length, time, velocity and a dimensionless parameter related to the effect of wall, of rotational dispersion coefficient is derived. The derived expression of rotational dispersion coefficient can be employed to the inhomogeneous and non-isotropic turbulent flows. Furthermore it can be expanded to three-dimensional turbulent flows and serves the theoretical basis for solving the turbulent flow of fiber suspension.  相似文献

3D Finite element calculations comparing to axisymmetric calculations have been performed to predict quantitatively the tensile behaviour of composites reinforced with ceramic particles aligned in stripes. The analyses are based on a unit cell model, which assumes the periodic arrangement of reinforcements. The results are presented in such a manner that can be directly compared for all possible aspect ratios and inclusion volume fractions. It is indicated that varying the distance between the stripes when particle volume fraction is kept constant significantly influences the overall mechanical behaviour of composites. Whereas during elastic deformation 3D and axisymmetric formulations predict quantitatively similar results, the mechanical behaviour perpendicular to the stripe direction predicted by 3D and axisymmetric models may differ depending on the inclusion volume fraction. Nevertheless an appreciable strengthening in the stripe direction independent on the model and deformation stage is predicted.  相似文献

A new carbon nanotube (CNT)–hybridized carbon fiber (CF) was introduced in an attempt to improve interfacial strength between CF and polymeric matrix. Amine-functionalized CNTs was radially deposited on the CF surface through a combination of alternating electric field with electrophoretic deposition process. Radial deposition of CNTs on CF formed a unique porous structure around CF that could significantly increase the interfacial adhesion through interlocking of polymeric matrix. Tensile properties and fatigue life of the reinforced composites were investigated in order to study the effect of interfacial adhesion on mechanical properties of reinforced composites. Results indicate that the radial deposition of CNT on CF can remarkably enhance the compatibility of polymeric matrix with CF. This improvement in compatibility of polymeric matrix with CNT–hybridized CF resulted in considerable enhancement in mechanical properties of composites. The interfacial reinforcing mechanism was explored through fractography of reinforced composites and possible failure modes have been precisely discussed.  相似文献

A fracture mechanics based failure criterion for unidirectional composites under combined loading has been developed. The predictions from this criterion have been compared with experimental data obtained from combined compression–torsion loading of glass and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites of 50% fiber volume fraction. The specimens were loaded under rotation control and displacement control in a proportional manner. Comparison of the Budiansky–Fleck kinking model, specialized to a solid circular cylinder, and the new failure model against experimental data suggests that the Budiansky–Fleck model predictions do not capture the variation of compressive strength as a function of shear stress for glass fiber composites. This is because these composites fail predominantly by compressive splitting. The Budiansky–Fleck model predictions are appropriate for composites that fail by compressive kinking. The new model predictions capture the experimental results for glass composites where the compression strength is initially unaffected by shear stress but undergoes a drastic reduction when a critical value of shear stress is reached.  相似文献

Denoting by the stress tensor, by the linearized strain tensor, by A the elasticity tensor, and assuming that is a convex potential, the inclusion accounts for nonlinear viscoelasticity, and encompasses both the linear Kelvin–Voigt model of solid-type viscoelasticity and the Prager model of rigid plasticity with linear kinematic strain-hardening. This relation is assumed to represent the constitutive behavior of a space-distributed system, and is here coupled with the dynamical equation. An initial- and boundary-value problem is formulated, and the existence and uniqueness of the solution are proved via classical techniques based on compactness and monotonicity. A composite material is then considered, in which the function and the tensor A rapidly oscillate in space. A two-scale model is derived via Nguetseng’s notion of two-scale convergence. This provides a detailed account of the mesoscopic state of the system. Any dependence on the fine-scale variable is then eliminated, and the existence of a solution of a new single-scale macroscopic model is proved. The final outcome is at variance with the nonlinear extension of the generalized Kelvin–Voigt model, which is based on an apparently unjustified mean-field-type hypothesis.  相似文献

We study the homogenization of an elastic material in contact with periodic parallel elastic rectangular cross-section fibres of higher rigidity. The interactions between the matrix and the fibres are described by a local adhesion contact law with interfacial adhesive stiffness parameter depending on the period. Assuming that the Lamé constants in the fibres and the stiffness parameter have appropriate orders of magnitude, we derive a class of energy functionals involving extension, flexure and torsion terms.  相似文献

In this paper we study the positivity of the determinant of the local electric field in a conducting composite. We know by [1] that the positivity holds true in two dimensions for any periodic structure. Using a different approach from [11] we prove that is also the case for a laminate microstructure in any dimension. However, and this is the main result of the paper, we provide an example of a two-phase three-dimensional periodic composite for which the determinant changes sign.  相似文献

We consider homogenization for weakly coupled systems of Hamilton–Jacobi equations with fast switching rates. The fast switching rate terms force the solutions to converge to the same limit, which is a solution of the effective equation. We discover the appearance of the initial layers, which appear naturally when we consider the systems with different initial data and analyze them rigorously. In particular, we obtain matched asymptotic solutions of the systems and the rate of convergence. We also investigate properties of the effective Hamiltonian of weakly coupled systems and show some examples which do not appear in the context of single equations.  相似文献

This paper deals with the prediction of the macroscopic behavior of a multiphase elastic–viscoplastic material. The proposed homogenization schemes are based on an interaction law postulated by Molinari et al. [Molinari, A., Ahzi, S., Kouddane, R. 1997. On the self-consistent modelling of elastic–plastic behavior of polycrystals. Mech. Mater., 26, 43–62]. Self-consistent schemes are developed to describe the behavior of disordered aggregates. The Mori-Tanaka approach is used to capture the behavior of composite materials, where one phase can be clearly identified as the matrix. The proposed schemes are developed within a general framework where compressible elasticity and anisotropy of the materials are taken into account. Inclusions can have various shapes and orientations. Illustrations of the homogenization procedure are given for a two-phase composite materials. Comparisons between results of the literature and predictions based on the interaction law are performed and have demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed homogenization schemes.  相似文献

We investigate the homogenization limit of a free boundary problem with space-dependent free boundary velocities. The problem under consideration has a well-known obstacle problem transformation, formally obtained by integrating with respect to the time variable. By making rigorous the link between these two problems, we are able to derive an explicit formula for the homogenized free boundary velocity, and we establish the uniform convergence of the free boundaries.  相似文献

. The coarsening of a solid phase in an undercooled liquid is described by a Stefan problem with surface tension. The solid phase is characterized by a large number of balls with small volume fraction and small capacity. We solve the quasi‐static equation as well as the parabolic problem and construct approximate solutions by means of comparison principles. The framework of Young measures is used to pass to the limit of infinitely many particles. We obtain that the capacity is the crucial quantity to get the conservation law for the particle size distribution which is studied in the classical theory for Ostwald ripening by Lifshitz, Slyozov & Wagner (LSW). The present paper describes a micromechanical technique to determine rheological properties of viscous fluid reinforced with unidirectional continuous fibers. Fluid viscosity is described by a shear thinning model and high viscosity is considered for continuous fibers having considerable rigidity compared to net fluid. The microstructure is identified by a representative volume element that is subjected to equivalent macroscopic deformation fields. The energy balance and periodicity conditions are considered to relate deformation and stress in macro and micro-levels. It is shown that response of viscous fluid reinforced with rigid fibers depends on deformation history as well as rate-of-deformation in the transverse intraply shear and transverse squeeze flows. An orthotropic viscous constitutive equation is derived to describe response of such materials. The material viscosities are evaluated for viscous fluid reinforced with different fiber volume fractions during deformation applied in different rates of deformation. The results are used to derive the functions predicting effective anisotropic viscosities of reinforced fluid.  相似文献
