The current status of the research and development as well as the recent contributions in optical communications at INESC Porto is reviewed. This review includes all the work carried out in the last few years in optical fiber communications, namely the development of passive and active optical devices. Some of the passive structures that have been studied and developed are: add-drop multiplexers, multiplexer/demultiplexer based on Bragg grating technology, dispersion compensators, and optical cross-connects. Active photonic devices such as wavelength converters, fiber lasers, and fiber amplifiers have also been studied. New ideas are being continuously developed and tested. 相似文献

To overcome the capacity crunch of optical communications based on the traditional single-mode fiber(SMF), different modes in a few-mode fiber(FMF) can be employed for mode division multiplexing(MDM). MDM can also be extended to photonic integration for obtaining improved density and efficiency, as well as interconnection capacity. Therefore, MDM becomes the most promising method for maintaining the trend of "Moore's law" in photonic integration and optical fiber transmission. In this tutorial, we provide a review of MDM works and cutting-edge progresses from photonic integration to optical fiber transmission, including our recent works of MDM low-noise amplification, FMF fiber design, MDM Si photonic devices, and so on. Research and application challenges of MDM for optical communications regarding long-haul transmission and short reach interconnection are discussed as well. The content is expected to be of important value for both academic researchers and industrial engineers during the development of next-generation optical communication systems,from photonic chips to fiber links. 相似文献

把量子阱激光混沌耦合反馈同步系统应用于光纤保密通信中,提出光纤混沌双芯双向保密通信设想.通过耦合外部光注入多量子阱激光混沌全光耦合反馈同步系统和光纤传输信道,建立了光纤混沌双芯双向通信系统物理模型.理论和数值证明了激光混沌同步,理论分析指出光纤中的自相位调制是限制激光混沌在光纤传输中同步的主要原因,并推导出混沌信号双芯双向传输中的非线性相移以及混沌激光功率限制和传输距离公式.数值实现了该系统在长距离二根光纤传输中的同步,详细地分析了系统同步时间随光纤传输长度的关系.模拟了调制频率06 GHz的混沌模拟通

The rationale for applying optical fiber communications in electric power companies is presented in this paper. Field tests between substations and within substations are described, and results are given.
