This paper presents an analysis of three-dimensional flows based on the concept of stream tubes and streamlines. In the case of incompressible liquids, the physical domain can be transformed, under certain assumptions, into a cylinder where the streamlines are parallel straight lines. In contrast to classical methods, the unknown to be determined is the transformation between the two domains. This analysis generalizes the formulation already proposed for plane and axisymmetric flows.  相似文献

A new characteristic-based method for the solution of the 2D laminar incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. For coupling the continuity and momentum equations, the artificial compressibility formulation is employed. The primitives variables (pressure and velocity components) are defined as functions of their values on the characteristics. The primitives variables on the characteristics are calculated by an upwind diffencing scheme based on the sign of the local eigenvalue of the Jacobian matrix of the convective fluxes. The upwind scheme uses interpolation formulae of third-order accuracy. The time discretization is obtained by the explicit Runge–Kutta method. Validation of the characteristic-based method is performed on two different cases: the flow in a simple cascade and the flow over a backwardfacing step.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an analysis that allows calculation of kinematic histories in unsteady problems of continuum mechanics, in relation to the use of memory-integral constitutive equations. Such cases particularly concern flow conditions of processing rheology, requiring evaluation of strain or deformation rate tensors, for viscoelastic incompressible fluids as polymers. In two- and three-dimensional cases, we apply concepts of the stream-tube method (STM) initially given for stationary conditions, where unknown local or global mapping functions are defined instead of classic velocity-pressure formulations, leading to consider the flow parameters in domains where the streamlines and trajectories are parallel straight lines. The approach enables us to provide accurate formulae for evaluating the kinematics histories that can be used later for computing the stresses for a given memory-integral model.  相似文献

Flows of fluids with single-integral memory functionals are considered. Evaluation of the stress at a material point involves the deformation history of that point, and a dominant computational cost in finite element approximation is the construction of streamlines. It is shown that the simple crossed-triangle macro-element is in many ways an ideal finite element for the difficult non-linear, non-self-adjoint problem. The question as to whether this element produces convergent velocity and pressure solutions is addressed in the light of its failure to satisfy the discrete LBB condition. The effect of the element's ill-disposed (‘spurious’) pressure modes is discussed, and a pressure smoothing scheme is given which gives good results in Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows at various Reynolds and Deborah numbers. As an example of the element's success in modelling such flows, the problem of pressure differences in flows over transverse slots is studied numerically. The results are compared with experimental observations of such flows. The effect of fluid memory on the relation between first normal-stress differences and pressure differences is investigated.  相似文献

A new mixed‐interpolation finite element method is presented for the two‐dimensional numerical simulation of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows which involve convective heat transfer. The proposed method applies the nodal shape functions, which are locally defined in nine‐node elements, for the discretization of the Navier–Stokes and energy equations, and the vector shape functions, which are locally defined in four‐node elements, for the discretization of the electromagnetic field equations. The use of the vector shape functions allows the solenoidal condition on the magnetic field to be automatically satisfied in each four‐node element. In addition, efficient approximation procedures for the calculation of the integrals in the discretized equations are adopted to achieve high‐speed computation. With the use of the proposed numerical scheme, MHD channel flow and MHD natural convection under a constant applied magnetic field are simulated at different Hartmann numbers. The accuracy and robustness of the method are verified through these numerical tests in which both undistorted and distorted meshes are employed for comparison of numerical solutions. Furthermore, it is shown that the calculation speed for the proposed scheme is much higher compared with that for a conventional numerical integration scheme under the condition of almost the same memory consumption. This paper proposes a hybrid volume-of-fluid (VOF) level-set method for simulating incompressible two-phase flows. Motion of the free surface is represented by a VOF algorithm that uses high resolution differencing schemes to algebraically preserve both the sharpness of interface and the boundedness of volume fraction. The VOF method is specifically based on a simple order high resolution scheme lower than that of a comparable method, but still leading to a nearly equivalent order of accuracy. Retaining the mass conservation property, the hybrid algorithm couples the proposed VOF method with a level-set distancing algorithm in an implicit manner when the normal and the curvature of the interface need to be accurate for consideration of surface tension. For practical purposes, it is developed to be efficiently and easily extensible to three-dimensional applications with a minor implementation complexity. The accuracy and convergence properties of the method are verified through a wide range of tests: advection of rigid interfaces of different shapes, a three-dimensional air bubble's rising in viscous liquids, a two-dimensional dam-break, and a three-dimensional dam-break over an obstacle mounted on the bottom of a tank. The standard advection tests show that the volume advection algorithm is comparable in accuracy with geometric interface reconstruction algorithms of higher accuracy than other interface capturing-based methods found in the literature. The numerical results for the remainder of tests show a good agreement with other numerical solutions or available experimental data. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Numerical simulation of three-dimensional flows generally involves solving large-scale problems. In this paper we consider the stream-tube method in three-dimensional duct flows. The analysis uses the concept of stream tubes in a mapped computational domain of the physical domain where the streamlines are parallel and straight. The incompressibility equation is automatically verified and the primary unknowns of the problem are, in addition to the pressure, the transformation functions between the two domains. It is also shown that the flow may be computed by considering successive subdomains (the stream tubes). This results in a reduction of computing time and storage area. Incompressible viscous and elastic liquids involving memory-integral equations may be considered in the flow simulations. This part of the paper examines three-dimensional flows of Newtonian fluids. The method is applied to the flow in a duct involving a threefold rotational symmetry, where the discretized relevant equations are solved by using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm.  相似文献

In this article, we present a finite element variational multiscale (VMS) method for incompressible flows based on the construction of projection basis functions and compare it with common VMS method, which is defined by a low‐order finite element space Lh on the same grid as Xh for the velocity deformation tensor and a stabilization parameter α. The best algorithmic feature of our method is to construct the projection basis functions at the element level with minimal additional cost to replace the global projection operator. Finally, we give some numerical simulations of the nonlinear flow problems to show good stability and accuracy properties of the method. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A particle–gridless hybrid method for the analysis of incompressible flows is presented. The numerical scheme consists of Lagrangian and Eulerian phases as in an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method, where a new‐time physical property at an arbitrary position is determined by introducing an artificial velocity. For the Lagrangian calculation, the moving‐particle semi‐implicit (MPS) method is used. Diffusion and pressure gradient terms of the Navier–Stokes equation are calculated using the particle interaction models of the MPS method. As an incompressible condition, divergence of velocity is used while the particle number density is kept constant in the MPS method. For the Eulerian calculation, an accurate and stable convection scheme is developed. This convection scheme is based on a flow directional local grid so that it can be applied to multi‐dimensional convection problems easily. A two‐dimensional pure convection problem is calculated and a more accurate and stable solution is obtained compared with other schemes. The particle–gridless hybrid method is applied to the analysis of sloshing problems. The amplitude and period of sloshing are predicted accurately by the present method. The range of the occurrence of self‐induced sloshing predicted by the present method shows good agreement with the experimental data. Calculations have succeeded even for the higher injection velocity range, where the grid method fails to simulate. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A pseudo-spectral solver with multigrid acceleration for the numerical prediction of incompressible non-isothermal flows is presented. The spatial discretization is based on a Chebyshev collocation method on Gauss–Lobatto points and for the discretization in time the second-order backward differencing scheme (BDF2) is employed. The multigrid method is invoked at the level of algebraic system solving within a pressure-correction method. The approach combines the high accuracy of spectral methods with efficient solver properties of multigrid methods. The capabilities of the proposed scheme are illustrated by a buoyancy driven cavity flow as a standard benchmark case. To cite this article: K. Krastev, M. Schäfer, C. R. We consider the notion of a functional solution of the Euler equations for incompressible fluid flows. We show that a functional solution can be constructed under very weak a priori estimates on approximate solution sequences of the equation; an estimate uniform in L loc 1 together with weak consistency with the equation is sufficient to construct a solution. We prove that if we have an estimate uniform in L loc 2 available for the approximate solution sequence, then the structured functional solution just described becomes a measure-valued solution in the sense of DiPerna & Majda. We also show that a functional solution can be obtained from a measure-valued solution. We give an example showing that a much higher concentration of energy than in the case of measure-valued solutions is allowed by the approximation procedure of a functional solution.  相似文献

Summary We perturb a steady flow of an incompressible viscous fluid and derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the marginal cases for monotonie energy stability and stability against small (infinitesimal) disturbances to coincide. Evaluation of this condition in two examples singles out, in terms of the parameters of the problem, the cases where necessary and sufficient conditions for stability coincide and thus the steady flow first becomes unstable, together with the class of perturbations responsible for the instability. The analysis is done within the range of strict solutions of each underlying problem; the precise regularity and existence classes are given in Sec. 0. The examples we treat are plane parallel shear flow with a non-symmetric profile in an infinite rotating layer and the effect of rotation on convection.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a coupled continuous Galerkin and discontinuous Galerkin finite element method based on a split scheme to solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. In order to use the equal order interpolation functions for velocity and pressure, we decouple the original Navier–Stokes equations and obtain three distinct equations through the split method, which are nonlinear hyperbolic, elliptic, and Helmholtz equations, respectively. The hybrid method combines the merits of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and finite element method (FEM). Therefore, DG is concerned to accomplish the spatial discretization of the nonlinear hyperbolic equation to avoid using the stabilization approaches that appeared in FEM. Moreover, FEM is utilized to deal with the Poisson and Helmholtz equations to reduce the computational cost compared with DG. As for the temporal discretization, a second‐order stiffly stable approach is employed. Several typical benchmarks, namely, the Poiseuille flow, the backward‐facing step flow, and the flow around the cylinder with a wide range of Reynolds numbers, are considered to demonstrate and validate the feasibility, accuracy, and efficiency of this coupled method. Computing free surface gravity flows involves basically two coupled problems, namely, the location of the free surface position and the determination of the internal flow field (for assumed values H0 and Q of the total head and discharge, respectively). Solution techniques are invariably based on iterative procedures, but those that iterate between the two coupled problems may become unstable. In this paper we present a computational method in which the coupling is kept throughout the process of iteration. This is achieved by converting the coupled problems (by means of the Kantorovich method) into the single problem of finding a set of streamlines, including that of the free surface. These streamlines are moved (iteratively) to satisfy the stationary conditions of the governing variational principle. The algorithm is very stable and converges rapidly. It is also easy to implement to solve various types of steady flows with a free surface under gravity.  相似文献

A pseudo‐spectral method for the solution of incompressible flow problems based on an iterative solver involving an implicit treatment of linearized convective terms is presented. The method allows the treatment of moderately complex geometries by means of a multi‐domain approach and it is able to cope with non‐constant fluid properties and non‐orthogonal problem domains. In addition, the fully implicit scheme yields improved stability properties as opposed to semi‐implicit schemes commonly employed. Key components of the method are a Chebyshev collocation discretization, a special pressure–correction scheme, and a restarted GMRES method with a preconditioner derived from a fast direct solver. The performance of the proposed method is investigated by considering several numerical examples of different complexity, and also includes comparisons to alternative solution approaches based on finite‐volume discretizations. A numerical technique (FGVT) for solving the time-dependent incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in fluid flows with large density variations is presented for staggered grids. Mass conservation is based on a volume tracking method and incorporates a piecewise-linear interface reconstruction on a grid twice as fine as the velocity–pressure grid. It also uses a special flux-corrected transport algorithm for momentum advection, a multigrid algorithm for solving a pressure-correction equation and a surface tension algorithm that is robust and stable. In principle, the method conserves both mass and momentum exactly, and maintains extremely sharp fluid interfaces. Applications of the numerical method to prediction of two-dimensional bubble rise in an inclined channel and a bubble bursting through an interface are presented. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a projection method is presented for solving the flow problems in domains with moving boundaries. In order to track the movement of the domain boundaries, arbitrary‐Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) co‐ordinates are used. The unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations on the ALE co‐ordinates are solved by using a projection method developed in this paper. This projection method is based on the Bell's Godunov‐projection method. However, substantial changes are made so that this algorithm is capable of solving the ALE form of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Multi‐block structured grids are used to discretize the flow domains. The grid velocity is not explicitly computed; instead the volume change is used to account for the effect of grid movement. A new method is also proposed to compute the freestream capturing metrics so that the geometric conservation law (GCL) can be satisfied exactly in this algorithm. This projection method is also parallelized so that the state of the art high performance computers can be used to match the computation cost associated with the moving grid calculations. Several test cases are solved to verify the performance of this moving‐grid projection method. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new Galerkin finite element method for the solution of the Navier–Stokes equations in enclosures containing internal parts which may be moving is presented. Dubbed the virtual finite element method, it is based upon optimization techniques and belongs to the class of fictitious domain methods. Only one volumetric mesh representing the enclosure without its internal parts needs to be generated. These are rather discretized using control points on which kinematic constraints are enforced and introduced into the mathematical formulation by means of Lagrange multipliers. Consequently, the meshing of the computational domain is much easier than with classical finite element approaches. First, the methodology will be presented in detail. It will then be validated in the case of the two-dimensional Couette cylinder problem for which an analytical solution is available. Finally, the three-dimensional fluid flow inside a mechanically agitated vessel will be investigated. The accuracy of the numerical results will be assessed through a comparison with experimental data and results obtained with a standard finite element method. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An incompressible Navier–Stokes solver using curvilinear body‐fitted collocated grid has been developed to solve unconfined flow past arbitrary two‐dimensional body geometries. In this solver, the full Navier–Stokes equations have been solved numerically in the physical plane itself without using any transformation to the computational plane. For the proper coupling of pressure and velocity field on collocated grid, a new scheme, designated ‘consistent flux reconstruction’ (CFR) scheme, has been developed. In this scheme, the cell face centre velocities are obtained explicitly by solving the momentum equations at the centre of the cell faces. The velocities at the cell centres are also updated explicitly by solving the momentum equations at the cell centres. By resorting to such a fully explicit treatment considerable simplification has been achieved compared to earlier approaches. In the present investigation the solver has been applied to unconfined flow past a square cylinder at zero and non‐zero incidence at low and moderate Reynolds numbers and reasonably good agreement has been obtained with results available from literature.
