The identification of strategies to assemble nanostructured films with engineered properties on solid supports can lead to the development of innovative functional materials. In particular, the self-assembly of electroactive multilayers from simple molecular building blocks on metallic electrodes can offer the opportunity to regulate the exchange of electrons between the underlying substrate and solution species. In this context, we designed an experimental protocol to prepare electroactive films from bipyridinium bisthiols. Specifically, we found that a compound incorporating two bipyridinium dications at its core and terminal thiol groups self-assembles into remarkably stable multilayers on polycrystalline gold. The surface coverage of the resulting films can be regulated by adjusting the exposure time of the gold substrate to the bipyridinium solution. Control experiments with appropriate model compounds demonstrate that both bipyridinium dications as well as both thiol groups must be present in the molecular skeleton to encourage multilayer growth. The resulting films transport electrons efficiently from the electrode surface to the film/solution interface. Indeed, they mediate the reduction of Ru(NH(3))(6)(3+) in the electrolyte solution but prevent the back oxidation of the resulting Ru(NH(3))(6)(2+). Furthermore, these polycationic bipyridinium films capture electrostatically Fe(CN)(6)(4-) tetraanions, which can also be exploited to transport electrons across the interfacial assembly. In fact, electrons can travel through the bipyridnium(2+/1+) couples to redox probes in solution and then back to the electrode through the Fe(CN)(6)(4/3-) couples. Thus, our original approach to self-assembling multilayers can produce stable electroactive films with unique electron transport properties, which can be regulated with a careful choice of the anionic components.  相似文献

Electroactive organic molecules have received a lot of attention in the field of electronics because of their fascinating electronic properties, easy functionalization and potential low cost towards their implementation in electronic devices. In recent years, electroactive organic molecules have also emerged as promising building blocks for the design and construction of crystalline porous frameworks such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) for applications in electronics. Such porous materials present certain additional advantages such as, for example, an immense structural and functional versatility, combination of porosity with multiple electronic properties and the possibility of tuning their physical properties by post-synthetic modifications. In this Review, we summarize the main electroactive organic building blocks used in the past few years for the design and construction of functional porous materials (MOFs and COFs) for electronics with special emphasis on their electronic structure and function relationships. The different building blocks have been classified based on the electronic nature and main function of the resulting porous frameworks. The design and synthesis of novel electroactive organic molecules is encouraged towards the construction of functional porous frameworks exhibiting new functions and applications in electronics.  相似文献

Controllable self-assembly of nanoscale building blocks into larger specific structures provides an effective route for the fabrication of new materials with unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. The ability of nanoparticles (NPs) to self-assemble like molecules is opening new research frontiers in nanoscience and nanotechnology. We present a new class of amphiphilic "colloidal molecules" (ACMs) composed of inorganic NPs tethered with amphiphilic linear block copolymers (BCPs). Driven by the conformational changes of tethered BCP chains, such ACMs can self-assemble into well-defined vesicular and tubular nanostructures comprising a monolayer shell of hexagonally packed NPs in selective solvents. The morphologies and geometries of these assemblies can be controlled by the size of NPs and molecular weight of BCPs. Our approach also allows us to control the interparticle distance, thus fine-tuning the plasmonic properties of the assemblies of metal NPs. This strategy provides a general means to design new building blocks for assembling novel functional materials and devices.  相似文献

The design, synthesis, characterization, and understanding of new molecular and macro-molecular substances with “metal-like” electrical properties represents an active research area at the interface of chemistry, physics, and materials science. An important, long-range goal in this field of “materials by design” is to construct supermolecular assemblies which exhibit preordained collective phenomena by virtue of “engineered” interactions between molecular building blocks. In this review, such a class of designed materials is discussed which, in addition, bridges the gap between molecular and polymeric conductors: assemblies of electrically conductive metallomacrocycles. It is seen that efforts to rationally construct stacked metal-like molecular arrays lead logically to structure-enforced macromolecular assemblies of covalently linked molecular subunits. Typical building blocks are robust, chemically versatile metallophthalocyanines. The electrical optical, and magnetic properties of these metallomacrocyclic assemblies and the fragments thereof, provide fundamental information on the connections between local atomic-scale architecture, electronic structure, and the macroscopic collective properties of the bulk solid.  相似文献

Phenolic materials have long been known for their use in inks, wood coatings, and leather tanning. However, there has recently been a renewed interest in engineering advanced materials from phenolic building blocks. The intrinsic properties of phenolic compounds, such as metal chelation, hydrogen bonding, pH responsiveness, redox potentials, radical scavenging, polymerization, and light absorbance, have made them a distinct class of structural motifs for the synthesis of functional materials. Materials prepared from phenolic compounds often retain many of these useful properties with synergistic effects in applications ranging from catalysis to biomedicine. This Review provides an overview of the diverse functional materials that can be prepared from natural and synthetic phenolic building blocks, as well as their applications.  相似文献

Colloidal supraparticles integrated with multicomponent primary particles come with emerging or synergetic functionalities. However, achieving the functional customization of supraparticles remains a great challenge because of the limited options of building blocks with tailorability and functional extensibility. Herein, we developed a universal approach to construct customizable supraparticles with desired properties from molecular building blocks obtained by the covalent conjugation of catechol groups with a series of orthogonal functional groups. These catechol-terminated molecular building blocks can assemble into primary particles driven by various intermolecular interactions (i.e. metal-organic coordination, host–guest, and hydrophobic interactions), and then further assemble into supraparticles governed by catechol-mediated interfacial interactions. Our strategy enables the formation of supraparticles with diverse functionalities, such as dual-pH responsiveness, light-controllable permeability, and non-invasive fluorescence labeling of living cells. The ease with which these supraparticles can be fabricated, and the ability to tailor their chemical and physical properties through the choice of metals and orthogonal functional groups used, should enable a variety of applications.  相似文献

The high potential of self-assembly processes of molecular building blocks is reflected in the vast variety of different functional nanostructures reported in the literature. The constituting units must fulfill several requirements like synthetic accessibility, presence of functional groups for appropriate intermolecular interactions and depending on the type of self-assembly processsignificant chemical and thermal stability. It is shown that oligopyridines are versatile building blocks for two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) self-assembly. They can be employed for building up different architectures like gridlike metal complexes in solution. By the appropriate tailoring of the heterocycles, further metal coordinating and/or hydrogen bonding capabilities to the heteroaromatic molecules can be added. Thus, the above-mentioned architectures can be extended in one-step processes to larger entities, or in a hierarchical fashion to infinite assemblies in the solid state, respectively. Besides the organizational properties of small molecules in solution, 2D assemblies on surfaces offer certain advantages over 3D arrays. By precise tailoring of the molecular structures, the intermolecular interactions can be fine-tuned expressed by a large variety of resulting 2D patterns. Oligopyridines prove to be ideal candidates for 2D assemblies on graphite and metal sufaces, respectively, expressing highly ordered structures. A slight structural variation in the periphery of the molecules leads to strongly changed 2D packing motifs based on weak hydrogen bonding interactions. Such 2D assemblies can be exploited for building up host-guest networks which are attractive candidates for manipulation experiments on the single-molecule level. Thus, "erasing" and "writing" processes by the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tip at the liquid/solid interface are shown. The 2D networks are also employed for performing coordination chemistry experiments at surfaces.  相似文献

The ability to construct three- and two-dimensional architectures via nanoscale engineering is important for emerging applications of nanotechnology in sensors, catalysis, controlled drug delivery, microelectronics, and medical diagnostics. In this paper, we report novel 3D assembly using multidentate molecular building blocks. It is demonstrated that the interparticle linking of gold nanoparticles (3.7 nm core size) by a tetradentate thioether, tetra[(methylthio)methyl]silane, leads to the formation of a spherical assembly. The spherical size (30-80 nm diameter) is dependent on reaction time and relative ratio of the building blocks. The novelty of this approach is the viability of multidentate thioethers to link nanoparticles and produce spherical assemblies that can be readily assembled and disassembled. The spherical assembly can also be partially "melted" depending on the nature of interfacial interactions between the assembly and the substrate. These unusual morphological properties in shape and surface interaction and the intriguing assembling-disassembling capabilities may form the basis of designing and fabricating novel functional nanostructures.  相似文献

A series of new dispiro[fluorene-9',6,9',12-indeno[1,2b]fluorenes] (DSF-IFs) has been synthesised. These new building blocks for blue-light-emitting devices and electroactive polymers combine indenofluorene (IF) and spirobifluorene (SBF) properties. We report here our synthetic investigations towards these new structures and their thermal, structural, photophysical and electrochemical properties. These properties have been compared to those of IF and SBF. We also report the anodic oxidation of DSF-IFs that leads to the formation of non-soluble transparent three-dimensional polymers. The structural and electrochemical behaviour of these polymers has been studied. The first application of these building blocks as new blue-light-emitting materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) is also reported.  相似文献

The solution-phase self-assembly or “polymerization” of discrete colloidal building blocks, such as “patchy” nanoparticles and multicompartment micelles, is attracting growing attention with respect to the creation of complex hierarchical materials. This approach represents a versatile method with which to transfer functionality at the molecular level to the nano- and microscale, and is often accompanied by the emergence of new material properties. In this perspective we highlight selected recent examples of the self-assembly of anisotropic nanoparticles which exploit directional interactions introduced through their shape or surface chemistry to afford a variety of hierarchical materials. We focus in particular on the solution self-assembly of block copolymers as a means to prepare multicompartment or “patchy” micelles. Due to their potential for synthetic modification, these constructs represent highly tuneable building blocks for the fabrication of a wide variety of functional assemblies.  相似文献

The development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with efficient charge transport is of immense interest for applications in optoelectronic devices. To enhance COF charge transport properties, electroactive building blocks and dopants can be used to induce extended conduction channels. However, understanding their intricate interplay remains challenging. We designed and synthesized a tailor-made COF structure with electroactive hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) core units and planar dioxin (D) linkages, denoted as HD-COF. With the support of theoretical calculations, we found that the HAT units in the HD-COF induce strong, eclipsed π–π stacking. The unique stacking of HAT units and the weak in-plane conjugation of dioxin linkages leads to efficient anisotropic charge transport. We fabricated HD-COF films to minimize the grain boundary effect of bulk COFs, which resulted in enhanced conductivity. As a result, the HD-COF films showed an electrical conductivity as high as 1.25 S cm−1 after doping with tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate.  相似文献

The design of hybrid mesoporous materials incorporating polymeric assemblies as versatile functional units has become a very fertile research area offering major opportunities for controlling molecular transport through interfaces. However, the creation of such functional materials depends critically on our ability to assemble polymeric units in a predictable manner within mesopores with dimensions comparable to the size of the macromolecular blocks themselves. In this work, we describe for the first time the manipulation of the molecular transport properties of mesoporous silica thin films by the direct infiltration of polyelectrolytes into the inner environment of the 3D porous framework. The hybrid architectures were built up through the infiltration-electrostatic assembly of polyallylamine (PAH) on the mesopore silica walls, and the resulting systems were studied by a combination of experimental techniques including ellipso-porosimetry, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, among others. Our results show that the infiltration-assembly of PAH alters the intrinsic cation-permselective properties of mesoporous silica films, rendering them ion-permeable mesochannels and enabling the unrestricted diffusion of cationic and anionic species through the hybrid interfacial architecture. Contrary to what happens during the electrostatic assembly of PAH on planar silica films (quantitative charge reversal), the surface charge of the mesoporous walls is completely neutralized upon assembling the cationic PAH layer (i.e., no charge reversal occurs). We consider this work to have profound implications not only on the molecular design of multifunctional mesoporous thin films but also on understanding the predominant role of nanoconfinement effects in dictating the functional properties of polymer-inorganic hybrid nanomaterials.  相似文献

Functional organic materials are of great interest for a variety of applications. To obtain precise functional properties, well-defined hierarchically ordered supramolecular materials are crucial. The self-assembly of liquid crystals has proven to be an extremely useful tool in the development of well-defined nanostructured materials. We have chosen the illustrative example of photopolymerizable hydrogen-bonding mesogens to show that a wide variety of functional materials can be made from a relatively simple set of building blocks. Upon mixing these compounds with other reactive mesogens, nematic, chiral nematic, and smectic or columnar liquid-crystalline phases can be formed that can be applied as actuators, sensors and responsive reflectors, and nanoporous membranes, respectively.  相似文献

Functionalized nanoparticles are promising building blocks for well-defined nanomaterials with unique properties. Site-specific or regio-selective functionalization of those nanoparticles and organization into high-order assemblies is a major challenge in materials research. Here, we demonstrate site-specific immobilization of a model protein at one tip of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), single-crystalline rod-like shaped nanoparticles that are isolated by acid hydrolysis of bulk cellulose. Click reaction between reducing end functionalized NCC bearing azide groups and β-casein micelles bearing acetylene groups results in mushroom-like conjugated nanoparticles in different arrangements. The strategy developed here to design hybrid polysaccharide–protein nanoparticles could be useful for building novel functional self-assembled nanobiomaterials and have potential in nanomedicine, immunoassay and drug delivery applications.  相似文献

Dipyrrolyldiketone boron complexes, as π-conjugated acyclic anion receptors, act as building subunits of various assemblies through noncovalent interactions in the form of receptor-anion complexes. Instead of, or in addition to, the modification of receptor structures, the introduction of anion modules as building blocks for the assemblies was found to be useful in forming various soft materials. Gallic carboxylate derivatives 3-n (n = 16, 18, 20), as tetrabutylammonium (TBA) salts, form receptor-anion-module complexes that can be used to fabricate supramolecular assemblies. Combinations of aliphatic anion modules 3-n and receptors 1a,b along with a TBA cation afforded products with mesophases, which were indicated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. X-ray diffraction measurements of the solid states and mesophases of 1a·3-n·TBA and 1b·3-n·TBA revealed highly ordered structures including lamellar structures, which could be modulated by the lengths of the alkyl chains of the modules. Functional materials exhibiting electrical conductivity were fabricated by using combinations of anionic building blocks that form assemblies by themselves and π-conjugated acyclic receptors.  相似文献

In recent years, interfacial properties have been tailored with nanostructured polymer assemblies to generate materials with specific properties and functions for application in diverse fields, including biomaterials, drug delivery, catalysis, sensing, optics and corrosion. This perspective begins with a brief introduction of the assembly techniques that are commonly employed for the synthesis of nanostructured polymer materials, followed by discussions on how the interfaces influence the properties and thus the functionalities of the polymer materials prepared. Applications of the interfacial polymer nanostructures, particularly for the immobilization and encapsulation of cargo, are then reviewed, focusing on stimuli-responsive cargo release from the polymer nanostructured assemblies for controlled delivery applications. Finally, future research directions in these areas are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Colloidal particles may be considered as building blocks for materials, just like atoms are the bricks of molecules, macromolecules, and crystals. Periodic arrays of colloids (colloidal crystals) have attracted much interest over the last two decades, largely because of their unique photonic properties. The archetype opal structures are based on close-packed arrays of spheres of submicrometer diameter. Interest in structuring materials at this length scale, but with more complex features and ideally by self-assembly processes, has led to much progress in controlling features of both building blocks and assemblies. The necessary ingredients include colloids, colloidal clusters, and colloidal "molecules" which have special shapes and the ability to bind directionally, the control over short-range and long-range interactions, and the capability to place and orientate these bricks. This Review highlights recent experimental and theoretical progress in the assembly of colloids larger than 50 nm.  相似文献
