The rheology of pseudoplastic fluids in porous media using network modeling   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper considers the rheology of pseudoplastic (shear thinning) fluids in porous media. The central problem studied is the relationship between the viscometric behavior of the polymer solution and its observed behavior in the porous matrix. In the past, a number of macroscopic approaches have been applied, usually based on capillary bundle models of the porous medium. These simplified models have been used along with constitutive equations describing the fluid behavior (usually of power law type) to establish semiempirical macroscopic equations describing the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media. This procedure has been reasonably successful in correlating experimental results on the flow of polymer solutions through both consolidated and unconsolidated porous materials. However, it does not allow an interpretation of polymer flow in porous media in terms of the flows on a microscopic scale; nor does it allow us to predict changes in macroscopic behavior resulting from variations at a microscopic level in the characteristics of the porous medium such as pore size distribution. In this work, we use a network approach to the modeling of non-Newtonian rheology, in order to understand some of the more detailed features of polymjer flow in porous media. This approach provides a mathematical bridge between the behavior of the non-Newtonian fluid in a single capillary and the macroscopic behavior as deduced from the pressure drop-flow rate relation across the whole network model. It demonstrates the importance of flow redistribution within the elements of the capillary network as the overall pressure gradient varies. As an example of a pseudoplastic fluid in a porous medium, we consider the flow of xanthan biopolymer. This polymer is important as a displacing fluid viscosifier in enhanced oil recovery applications and, for that reason, a considerable amount of experimental data has been published on the flow of xanthan solutions in various porous media.  相似文献

The use of etched, chemically modified, capillaries with a rectangular inner channel for open tubular electrochromatography is investigated. Comparisons of separation capabilities are made between circular and rectangular capillaries undergoing the same etching and chemical modification processes. With the long dimension of the rectangular column aligned in the direction of the optical light path, the relative sensitivities of the two capillary geometries are evaluated. The electrochromatographic properties of two catechins found in tea are investigated on the rectangular etched octadecyl-modified capillary.  相似文献

In Part I of this paper, we introduced the Mason-Morrow shape factor and the corner half-angles to capture the part of geometry of angular capillaries essential in pore network calculations of single- and two-phase flow in drainage and imbibition. We then used this shape factor to obtain simple expressions for the hydraulic conductance in single-phase flow through triangular, rectangular, and oval capillaries. In Part II, we study two-phase fluid flow along angular capillaries. The nonwetting fluid occupies the central part of the capillary, whereas the wetting liquid fills the corners. First, we verify the numerical solution obtained by Ransohoff-Radke for concave corner menisci by using a high-resolution finite element method with zero and infinite surface shear viscosity. We present new numerical results for corner flow domains bounded by convex menisci, i.e., for pinned contact lines and forced imbibition. We also present numerical solutions for two-phase flow with momentum transfer across the interface. We introduce a dimensionless hydraulic conductance of wetting fluid in the corners and correlate it with the corner filament shape factor, corner half-angle, and contact angle. By appropriate scaling, we obtain an accurate universal curve for flow conductance in the corners of an arbitrary angular capillary and for arbitrary contact angles. We give error estimates of the Ransohoff-Radke flow resistance factors, of the Zhou et al. analytical expressions for the resistance factors, and of our universal curves for the hydraulic conductance with no-slip and perfect-slip boundary conditions at the interface. Our expressions for the hydraulic conductance in corner flow of wetting liquid not only are valid for both concave and convex fluid interfaces but also are more accurate than any other published correlation. The purpose of this study is to investigate non-Darcian mixed convection flow, heat and mass transfer in a non-Newtonian power-law fluid over a flat plate embedded in porous medium with suction and viscous dissipation and also is to demonstrate the application and utility of a recently developed multi-domain bivariate spectral quasi-linearisation method (MD-BSQLM) in finding the solutions of highly nonlinear differential equations. The flow is subject to, among other source terms, internal heat generation, thermal radiation and partial velocity slip. The coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations are solved using a MD-BSQLM to find the fluid properties, the skin friction, as well as the heat and mass coefficients. We have presented selected results that give the significance of some system parameters on the fluid properties. This MD-BSQLM has not been used before in the literature to find the nature of the solutions of power-law fluids. Indeed, validation of this numerical method for general fluid flows, heat and mass transfer problems has not yet been done. This study presents the first opportunity to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the MD-BSQLM in finding solutions of non-Newtonian fluids.  相似文献

Abstract

The two-dimensional boundary layer equations for a class of non-Newtonian fluids, for which the apparent viscosity can be expressed as a polynomial in the second scalar invariant of the rate of strain tensor, have been derived. These equations have been employed to analyse the flow near a stagnation point over a stationary impermeable wall. The non-Newtonian effects on the boundary layer velocity profile and the wall skin friction have been studied, and compared with the corresponding Newtonian fluid. The fluid velocity in the boundary layer has been shown to be retarded by the non-Newtonian effect while the skin friction increases proportionate to it.  相似文献

In this paper, analytical solutions are derived, describing the transport characteristics of a non-Newtonian fluid flow in a rectangular microchannel, under the sole influence of electrokinetic forces. Apart from estimating the fully-developed velocity and temperature distributions, an explicit expression is derived for solutal concentration distribution within the microchannel. Finally, as an illustrative case study, the flow behaviour of a blood sample is analyzed, in which the flow parameters are modeled as functions of the hematocrit fraction in the sample. It is revealed that a higher hematocrit fraction may result in significant reductions in species concentration levels, on account of stronger dispersions in the velocity profiles, characterized by more significant viscous effects. It is also demonstrated that cases in which characteristic length scale of RBC suspensions turns out to be consequential relative to the microchannel dimensions, a significant augmentation in the electroosmotic transport may occur. Such observations can be of particular significance in the design of electroosmotically actuated bio-microfluidic systems as efficient solutal carriers.  相似文献

Capillary electrophoresis in 770 nanometer inner diameter capillaries coupled to electrochemical detection with an etched electrode matching an etched capillary (etched electrochemical detection) has been used with ultrasmall sampling to inject subcellular samples from intact single mammalian cells. Separations of cytoplasmic samples taken from rat pheochromocytoma cells have been achieved. As little as 8% of the total volume of a single cell has been sampled and analyzed. Dopamine has been identified and quantified in these PC12 cells using this technique. The average cytoplasmic level of dopamine in rat pheochromocytoma cells has been determined to be 240 ± 60 μM. The use of electrophoresis in 770 nanometer inner diameter capillaries with electrochemical detection to monitor cytoplasmic neurotransmitters at the single cell level can provide information about complex cellular functions such as neurotransmitter storage and synthesis.  相似文献

A 50 microm capillary that has been etched with ammonium hydrogen difluoride is evaluated as a separation medium for capillary electrochromatography. For a tryptic digest of transferrin, the etched capillary gave better resolution (more peaks in the overall peptide map) and longer retention than separations done under identical experimental conditions on an unetched fused-silica capillary. Resolution on the etched capillary was improved by lowering the voltage from 300 to 267 V/cm. A four-component protein sample also resulted in longer retention on an echted capillary than on an unetched fused-silica capillary that were both coated with Polybrene. After correction for differences in electroosmotic flow between the two capillaries, the calculated electrophoretic mobilities for all four proteins were lower on the etched capillary than on the unetched fused-silica capillary. The results of both the tryptic digest and protein experiments strongly indicate the presence of chromatographic effects on the etched capillary that contribute to the increased retention and improved resolution with respect to the unetched fused-silica capillary.  相似文献

Fused silica capillaries with an I.D. of 20 microns are etched and then chemically modified by the silanization/hydrosilation method to attach an octadecyl moiety for use in electrokinetic chromatography. The etched capillaries after chemical modification are shown to have an anodic electroosmotic flow below pH 4.5. In comparison to bare 20 microns capillaries and unetched but chemically modified 20 microns capillaries, the etched C18 fused silica tubes show better separation of mixtures of lysozymes and cytochrome c's under identical conditions of buffer, pH and applied voltage. It was also demonstrated that this open tubular approach to capillary electrochromatography was amenable to a number of different types of basic compounds ranging in size from typical small amines to biomolecules. As expected, pH is an important variable that must be controlled in order to obtain an optimized separation. Reproducibility studies verify the stability of the silicon-carbon linkage produced in this modification method so that column lifetimes of at least 300 injections can be expected.  相似文献

Electroosmotic flow (EOF) has been widely used to transport fluids and samples in micro- and nanofluidic channels for lab-on-a-chip applications. This essentially surface-driven plug-like flow is, however, sensitive to both the fluid and wall properties, of which any inhomogeneity may draw disturbances to the flow and even instabilities. Existing studies on EOF instabilities have been focused primarily upon Newtonian fluids though many of the chemical and biological solutions are actually non-Newtonian. We carry out a systematic experimental investigation of the fluid rheological effects on the elastic instability in the EOF of phosphate buffer-based polymer solutions through T-shaped microchannels. We find that electro-elastic instabilities can be induced in shear thinning polyacrylamide (PAA) and xanthan gum (XG) solutions if the applied direct current voltage is above a threshold value. However, no instabilities are observed in Newtonian or weakly shear thinning viscoelastic fluids including polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions. We also perform a quantitative analysis of the wave parameters for the observed elasto-elastic instabilities.

Silica hydride is a recent development in chromatographic support materials for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) where hydride groups replace 95% of the silanols on the surface. This conversion changes many of the fundamental properties of the material as well as the bonded stationary phases that are the result of further chemical modification of the hydride surface. Some unique chromatographic properties of hydride-based phases are described as well as some general application areas where these bonded materials may be used in preference to or have advantages not available from typical stationary phases. The fabrication, properties and applications of etched chemically modified capillaries for electrophoretic analysis are also reviewed. It is shown that the etching process creates a surface that is fundamentally different than a bare fused silica capillary. The new surface matrix produces unique electroosmotic flow properties and is more compatible with basic and biological compounds. After chemical modification of the surface, the bonded organic moiety (stationary phase) contributes to the control of migration of solutes in the capillary. Both electrophoretic and chromatographic processes take place in the etched chemically modified capillaries leading to a variety of experimental variables that can be used to optimize separations. A number of examples of separations on these capillaries are described.  相似文献

Fused silica capillaries for use in electrophoretic analyses are etched with ammonium bifluoride in the presence of a second inorganic salt (CuCl(2), CrCl(3), NaNO(3), or (NH(4))(2)CO(3)). The effects of the presence of these inorganic components in the surface matrix on the electromigration behavior of enkephalins are evaluated. Resolution, efficiency and peak shape are used to compare the various columns. In some cases the etched surface is then modified by the addition of an octadecyl moiety using a silanization/hydrosilation procedure. The surface properties of the etched capillaries can also be evaluated by electroosmotic flow measurements. RSDs of migration times under identical experimental conditions were <1%.  相似文献

The flow of non-Newtonian gassed liquids in porous media and capillaries accompanied by slip is considered. A mechanism for the slip in the flow of non-Newtonian liquids and models for describing the observed phenomena are proposed based on an analysis of accumulated experimental data.  相似文献

There are only a few examples in which beads are employed for heterogeneous assays on microfluidic devices, because of the difficulties associated with packing and handling these in etched microstructures. This contribution describes a microfluidic device that allows the capture, preconcentration, and controlled manipulation of small beads (<6 microm) in etched microchannels using fluid flows only. The chips feature planar diverging and converging channel elements connected by a narrow microchannel. Creation of bi-directional liquid movement by opposing electro-osmotic and pressure-driven flows can lead to the generation of controlled recirculating flow at these elements. Small polymer beads can actually be captured in the controlled rotating flow patterns. The clusters of freely moving beads that result can be perfused sequentially with different solutions. A preliminary binding curve was determined for the reaction of streptavidin-coated beads and fluorescein-labelled biotin, demonstrating the potential of this bead-handling approach for bioanalysis.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to create a microfluidic model of complex porous media for studying single and multiphase flows. Most experimental porous media models consist of periodic geometries that lend themselves to comparison with well-developed theoretical predictions. However, many real porous media such as geological formations and biological tissues contain a degree of randomness and complexity at certain length scales that is not adequately represented in periodic geometries. To design an experimental tool to study these complex geometries, we created microfluidic models of random homogeneous and heterogeneous networks based on Voronoi tessellations. These networks consisted of approximately 600 grains separated by a highly connected network of channels with an overall porosity of 0.11-0.20. We found that introducing heterogeneities in the form of large cavities within the network changed the permeability in a way that cannot be predicted by the classical porosity-permeability relationship known as the Kozeny equation. The values of permeability found in experiments were in excellent agreement with those calculated from three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann simulations. In two-phase flow experiments of oil displacement with water we found that the wettability of channel walls determined the pattern of water invasion, while the network topology determined the residual oil saturation. The presence of cavities increased the microscopic sweeping efficiency in water-oil displacement. These results suggest that complex network topologies lead to fluid flow behavior that is difficult to predict based solely on porosity. The novelty of this approach is a unique geometry generation algorithm coupled with microfabrication techniques to produce pore scale models of stochastic homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media. The ability to perform and visualize multiphase flow experiments within these geometries will be useful in measuring the mechanism(s) of displacement within micro- and nanoscale pores.  相似文献

Recently, microfluidic techniques have been widely applied for biomaterial droplet manipulations due to their precision and efficiency. Many biosamples such as deoxyribonucleic acid and blood samples are non-Newtonian fluids with complex rheology, which brings challenges in control over them. The electric field is characterized by fast response and excellent adaptation to control microscale fluid flow. Here, we systematically investigate the alternating current electric field–assisted formation of non-Newtonian droplet in a flow-focusing microchannel with different sizes of channel orifice. The dependencies of flow conditions, microchannel geometries and electric parameters on the dynamics of non-Newtonian droplet formation are thus elucidated. An effective capacitance electric model is developed to reveal and predict the interaction between the fluid flow and the electric field. Furthermore, the flow field of non-Newtonian droplet formation is captured via the high-speed microparticle image velocimetry system. The characteristics of the regimes of droplet formation and the influences of the channel orifice are revealed quantitatively. Our work offers elaborate references to the control of non-Newtonian droplet formation, which benefits a wide range of applications in biology and chemistry.  相似文献

A void network model, named Pore-Cor, has been used to study the permeation of an ink solvent into paper coating formulations coated onto a synthetic substrate. The network model generated anisotropic void networks of rectangular cross-sectional pores connected by elliptical cross-sectional throats. These structures had porosities and mercury intrusion properties which closely matched those of the experimental samples. The permeation of hexadecane, used as an analogue for the experimental test oil, was then simulated through these void structures. The simulations were compared to measurements of the permeation of mineral oil into four types of paper coating formulation. The simulations showed that the inertia of the fluid as it enters void features causes a considerable change in wetting over a few milliseconds, a timescale relevant to printing in a modern press. They also showed that in the more anisotropic samples, fast advance wetting occurred through narrow void features. It was found that the match between experimental and simulated wetting could be improved by correcting the simulation for the number of surface throats. The simulations showed a more realistic experimental trend, and much greater preferential flow, than the traditional Lucas-Washburn and effective hydraulic radius approaches.  相似文献
