Uniaxial and non-proportionally multiaxial ratcheting of SS304 stainless steel at room temperature: experiments and simulations
The uniaxial and non-proportionally multiaxial ratcheting behaviors of SS304 stainless steel at room temperature were initially researched by experiment and then were theoretically described by a cyclic constitutive model in the framework of unified visco-plasticity. The effects of cyclic stress amplitude, mean stress, and their histories on the ratcheting were experimentally investigated under uniaxial and different multiaxial loading paths. The shapes of non-proportional loading paths were linear, circular, elliptical and rhombic, respectively. In the constitutive model, the rate-dependent behavior of the material was reflected by a viscous term; the cyclic flow and cyclic hardening behaviors of the material under asymmetrical stress-controlled cycling were reflected by the evolution rules of kinematic hardening back stress and isotropic deforming resistance, respectively. The effect of loading history on the ratcheting was also considered by introducing two fading memorization functions for maximum inelastic strain amplitude and isotropic deformation resistance, respectively, into the constitutive model. The effect of multiaxial loading path on the ratcheting was reflected by a non-proportional factor defined in this work. The predicting ability of the developed model was proved to be good by comparing the simulations with corresponding experiments.

Perfectly elastoplastic constitutive model is modified through a smoothing factor introduced by Liu [Liu, C.-S., 2003. Smoothing elastoplastic stress–strain curves obtained by a critical modification of conventional models. Int. J. Solids Struct. 40, 2121–2145]. The new model allows plasticity to happen in a non-zero-measure yield volume in stress space, rather than that of conventional zero-measure yield surface, and within the yield volume the plastic modulus is varying continuously. It endows a specific strain-hardening rule of flow stress and is able to describe the phenomena of strain hardening, cyclic hardening, the Bauschinger effect, mean-stress relaxation, strain ratcheting, out-of-phase hardening, as well as erasure-of-memory. In order to suppress the over prediction of ratcheting we consider a scalar function of smoothing factor, which can simulate the saturation behavior of uniaxial/multiaxial strain ratcheting. These effects are demonstrated through numerical examples. The existence of stress equilibrium point and limiting surface is a natural result without requiring an extra design. Moreover, the non-linear constitutive equations can be converted into a linear system for augmented stress in the Minkowski space, of which the symmetry group is a proper orthochronous Lorentz group SOo(5, 1). The augmented stress is a time-like vector, moving on hyperboloids inside the cone. When taking the Prager kinematic hardening rule into account we can simulate some cyclic behaviors of SAE 4340 and grade 60 steels within a certain accuracy through the use of only three material constants and a fixed smoothing factor. To simulate the ratcheting behaviors of SS304 stainless steel we allow the smoothing factor to be an exponential decaying function of λ.

Based on the experimental results of super-elastic NiTi alloy, a three-dimensional super-elastic constitutive model including both of stress-induced martensite transformation and plasticity is constructed in a framework of general inelasticity. In the proposed model, transformation hardening, reverse transformation of stress-induced martensite, elastic mismatch between the austenite and martensite phases, and temperature-dependence of transformation stress and elastic modulus of each phase are considered. The plastic yielding of martensite occurred under high stress is addressed by a bilinear isotropic hardening rule. Drucker-Prager-typed transformation surfaces are employed to describe the asymmetric behavior of NiTi alloy in tension and compression. The prediction capability of the proposed model is verified by comparing the simulated results with the correspondent experimental ones. Based on backward Euler's integration, a new expression of consistent tangent modulus is derived. The proposed model is then implemented into a finite element package ABAQUS by user-subroutine UMAT. Finally, the validity of such implementation was verified by some numerical samples.

Motivated by the distribution of non-linear relaxation (DNLR) approach, a phenomenological model is proposed in order to describe the cyclic plasticity behavior of metals under proportional and non-proportional loading paths with strain-controlled conditions. Such a model is based on the generalization of the Gibbs's relationship outside the equilibrium of uniform system and the use of the fluctuation theory to analyze the material dissipation due to its internal reorganization. The non-linear cyclic stress–strain behavior of metals notably under complex loading is of particular interest in this study. Since the hardening effects are described appropriately and implicitly by the model, thus, a host of inelastic behavior of metals under uniaxial and multiaxial cyclic loading paths are successfully predicted such as, Bauschinger, strain memory effects as well as additional hardening. After calibrating the model parameters for two metallic materials, the model has demonstrated obviously its ability to describe the cyclic elastic-inelastic behavior of the nickel base alloy Waspaloy and the stainless steel 316L. The model is then implemented in a commercial finite element code simulating the cyclic stress–strain response of a thin-walled tube specimen. The numerical responses are in good agreement with experimental results.

A framework for phenomenological hyperelasto-plasticity with initial anisotropy, kinematic hardening as well as anisotropic damage is presented in [Menzel et al., Int. J. Plasticity (2004), in press]. In this contribution, we exploit and extend this framework to include several back-stresses in order to capture the ratcheting response of polycrystalline metals subjected to cyclic stress with non-zero mid-value. The evolution equations for kinematic hardening resemble a linear combination of the multiple-Armstrong–Frederick and the Burlet–Cailletaud models, which are extended to the large strain setting. The capability of the model to capture various phenomenological characteristics, in particular multi-axial ratcheting, is illustrated by numerical examples. Comparisons with uni-axial and bi-axial experimental ratcheting results for carbon steel are given. Finally, the finite element analysis of a simplified railway turnout component subjected to cyclic loading is presented.

This paper is concerned with an application of the multi-surface plasticity in solid mechanics and geotechnical problems. The model is of a von-Mises type with associated flow rule, originally proposed by Montans. The Mroz translation rule is implemented to the movements of the yield surfaces and the fully implicit scheme with radial mapping method is applied in numerical computations. Algorithmic consistent tangent modulus with numerical integration algorithm of constitutive equations is extracted. The model is developed in the class of kinematic hardening models, so the ‘Masing’ rule is preserved. The model is able to consider the plastic strain accumulation in constant axial stress state, such as ratcheting. The implementation is validated by means of a simple deformation path of combined extension and compression test, a pure shear test with pseudo-random loading, a test which demonstrates the capabilities of the model in simulation of cyclic loading and ratcheting, a cyclic shear test in saturated undrained sand and finally, the analysis of a plate with holes, which presents the shear band using the multi-surface plasticity model.
