One of the biggest obstacles to the dissemination of fuel cells is their cost, a large part of which is due to platinum (Pt) electrocatalysts. Complete removal of Pt is a difficult if not impossible task for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEM‐FCs). The anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEM‐FC) has long been proposed as a solution as non‐Pt metals may be employed. Despite this, few examples of Pt‐free AEM‐FCs have been demonstrated with modest power output. The main obstacle preventing the realization of a high power density Pt‐free AEM‐FC is sluggish hydrogen oxidation (HOR) kinetics of the anode catalyst. Here we describe a Pt‐free AEM‐FC that employs a mixed carbon‐CeO2 supported palladium (Pd) anode catalyst that exhibits enhanced kinetics for the HOR. AEM‐FC tests run on dry H2 and pure air show peak power densities of more than 500 mW cm?2.  相似文献

The search for highly efficient platinum group metal (PGM)‐free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in alkaline electrolytes remains a great challenge in the development of alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here we report the synthesis of an oxygen‐vacancy‐rich CeO2/Ni heterostructure and its remarkable HOR performance in alkaline media. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate the electron transfer between CeO2 and Ni could lead to thermoneutral adsorption free energies of H* (ΔGH*). This, together with the promoted OH* adsorption strength derived from the abundance of oxygen vacancies in the CeO2 species, contributes to the excellent HOR performance with the exchange current density and mass activity of 0.038 mA cmNi?2 and 12.28 mA mgNi?1, respectively. This presents a new benchmark for PGM‐free alkaline HOR and opens a new avenue toward the rational design of high‐performance PGM‐free electrocatalysts for alkaline HOR.  相似文献

A method for measuring the kinetics of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in a fuel cell under enhanced mass transport conditions is presented. The measured limiting current density was roughly 1600 mA cmPt? 2, corresponding to a rate constant of the forward reaction in the Tafel step of 0.14 mol m? 2 s? 1 at 80 °C and 90% RH. The exchange current density for the HOR was determined using the slope at low overvoltages and was found to be 770 mA cmPt? 2. The high values for the limiting and exchange current densities suggest that the Pt loading in the anode catalyst can be reduced further without imposing measurable voltage loss.  相似文献

Efficient and durable nonprecious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction (ORR) are highly desirable for several electrochemical devices, including anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, a 2D planar electrocatalyst with CoOx embedded in nitrogen‐doped graphitic carbon (N‐C‐CoOx) was created through the direct pyrolysis of a metal–organic complex with a NaCl template. The N‐C‐CoOx catalyst showed high ORR activity, indicated by excellent half‐wave (0.84 V vs. RHE) and onset (1.01 V vs. RHE) potentials. This high intrinsic activity was also observed in operating AEMFCs where the kinetic current was 100 mA cm?2 at 0.85 V. When paired with a radiation‐grafted ETFE powder ionomer, the N‐C‐CoOx AEMFC cathode was able to achieve extremely high peak power density (1.05 W cm?2) and mass transport limited current (3 A cm?2) for a precious metal free electrode. The N‐C‐CoOx cathode also showed good stability over 100 hours of operation with a voltage decay of only 15 % at 600 mA cm?2 under H2/air (CO2‐free) reacting gas feeds. The N‐C‐CoOx cathode catalyst was also paired with a very low loading PtRu/C anode catalyst, to create AEMFCs with a total PGM loading of only 0.10 mgPt‐Ru cm?2 capable of achieving 7.4 W mg?1PGM as well as supporting a current of 0.7 A cm?2 at 0.6 V with H2/air (CO2 free)—creating a cell that was able to meet the 2019 U.S. Department of Energy initial performance target of 0.6 V at 0.6 A cm?2 under H2/air with a PGM loading <0.125 mg cm?2 with AEMFCs for the first time.  相似文献

In this study, we proposed high‐performance chemically regenerative redox fuel cells (CRRFCs) using NO3/NO with a nitrogen‐doped carbon‐felt electrode and a chemical regeneration reaction of NO to NO3 via O2. The electrochemical cell using the nitrate reduction to NO at the cathode on the carbon felt and oxidation of H2 as a fuel at the anode showed a maximal power density of 730 mW cm−2 at 80 °C and twofold higher power density of 512 mW cm−2 at 0.8 V, than the target power density of 250 mW cm−2 at 0.8 V in the H2/O2 proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). During the operation of the CRRFCs with the chemical regeneration reactor for 30 days, the CRRFCs maintained 60 % of the initial performance with a regeneration efficiency of about 92.9 % and immediately returned to the initial value when supplied with fresh HNO3.  相似文献

Lithium metal is an ideal anode for high‐energy rechargeable batteries at low temperature, yet hindered by the electrochemical instability with the electrolyte. Concentrated electrolytes can improve the oxidative/reductive stability, but encounter high viscosity. Herein, a co‐solvent formulation was designed to resolve the dilemma. By adding electrochemically “inert” dichloromethane (DCM) as a diluent in concentrated ethyl acetate (EA)‐based electrolyte, the co‐solvent electrolyte demonstrated a high ionic conductivity (0.6 mS cm?1), low viscosity (0.35 Pa s), and wide range of potential window (0–4.85 V) at ?70 °C. Spectral characterizations and simulations show these unique properties are associated with the co‐solvation structure, in which high‐concentration clusters of salt in the EA solvent were surrounded by mobile DCM diluent. Overall, this novel electrolyte enabled rechargeable metallic Li battery with high energy (178 Wh kg?1) and power (2877 W kg?1) at ?70 °C.  相似文献

Maximizing the platinum utilization in electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is very desirable for large‐scale sustainable application of Pt in energy systems. A cost‐effective carbon‐supported carbon‐defect‐anchored platinum single‐atom electrocatalysts (Pt1/C) with remarkable ORR performance is reported. An acidic H2/O2 single cell with Pt1/C as cathode delivers a maximum power density of 520 mW cm?2 at 80 °C, corresponding to a superhigh platinum utilization of 0.09 gPt kW?1. Further physical characterization and density functional theory computations reveal that single Pt atoms anchored stably by four carbon atoms in carbon divacancies (Pt‐C4) are the main active centers for the observed high ORR performance.  相似文献

Carbon-supported Ni@Ag core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized and used as the anode electrocatalyst for direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell (DBHFC). The morphology, structure, and composition of the as-prepared electrocatalysts are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Electrochemical characterizations are performed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA), linear scan voltammetry with rotating disk electrode (LSV RDE), and fuel cell test. The catalytic behaviors and main kinetic parameters (e.g., Tafel slope, number of electrons exchanged, exchange current density, and apparent activation energy) toward BH 4 oxidation on Ag/C and Ni@Ag/C electrocatalysts are determined. Results show that the as-prepared nanoparticles have a core-shell structure with the average size approximately 13 nm. The kinetics of NaBH4 oxidation is faster for Ni@Ag/C than that for Ag/C. Among the as-prepared catalysts, the highest transition electron value and the lowest apparent activation energy are obtained on Ni1@Ag1/C; the values are 4.8 and 20.23 kJ mol?1, respectively. The DBHFC using Ni1@Ag1/C as anode electrocatalyst and Pt mesh (1 cm2) as cathode electrode obtains the maximum anodic power density as high as 8.54 mW cm?2 at a discharge current density of 8.42 mA cm?2 at 25 °C.  相似文献

Hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions (HOR and HER) are studied on PtxNi1?x/C materials synthesized by the bromide anion exchange method. Physicochemical characterization shows that this surfactant‐free method enables the preparation of well‐dispersed and effective catalysts for the processes involved in the anode of H2/O2 fuel cells (HOR) and the cathode of water electrolyzers (HER). The Pt‐based materials are modified with different Ni contents to decrease the amount of costly precious metal in the electrode materials. These modified Pt‐based materials are found to be electroactive for both reactions without additional overpotential. Kinetic parameters such as the Tafel slope, exchange (j0) and kinetic current densities, and the rate‐determining steps of the reaction mechanisms are determined for each Pt–Ni catalyst and compared to those obtained at the Pt/C surface in alkaline medium. The high j0 values that are obtained indicate a probable contribution of the surface structure of the catalysts due to their roughness and the presence of oxygenated Ni species even at low potentials.  相似文献

This paper reports a novel mediator for the oxidation of β‐nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+/NADH), an electropolymeric film (pAPRu) of [Ru(NH2‐phen)3]2+. A pAPRu‐modified electrode was prepared via electropolymerization and exhibited catalytic activity toward the electrochemical oxidation of NADH due to the imine moieties of pAPRu. The electrochemical oxidation of ethanol was observed using an alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)‐immobilized electrode. A compartmentless ethanol/O2 biofuel cell composed of an ADH anode and a bilirubin oxidase cathode was constructed. The maximum current density and the maximum power density of the biofuel cell were 190 µA cm?2 and 31 µW cm?2 (at 0.29 V), respectively.  相似文献

Electrochemical characteristics of single cell performances at various humidity conditions and constant temperatures of 40?100 °C using membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) were studied. The MEAs consist of alternative proton-conducting hybrid membrane electrolyte and noble Pt/C catalyst for the H2/O2 proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The function of humidity on the cell performances was investigated at larger current density values of 501 mA cm?2 and constant cell temperatures of 80 and 90 °C and the relative humidity of 100 %. The power density value of 400 mW cm?2 was obtained when the same MEA at similar operating conditions was used. The effects of temperature on the single cell performances were investigated at various temperature ranges of 40–100 °C and constant relative humidity of 50, 70, and 100 %. The maximum current density and power density values of about 600 mA cm?2 and 160 mW cm?2, respectively, were obtained at 90 °C with 100 % RH. The results were compared with the reported results of Nafion membrane and similar hybrid membranes operating at low temperatures for H2/O2 fuel cells. Finally, the results provided an alternative proton-conducting electrolyte as promising candidate for low/intermediate temperature operating H2/O2 fuel cells.  相似文献

The electrochemical reduction of oxygen on binary Pt–Ru alloy deposited onto microporous–mesoporous carbon support was studied in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution using cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk electrode (RDE), and impedance method. The microporous–mesoporous carbon support C(Mo2C) with specific surface area of 1,990 m2?g?1 was prepared from Mo2C at 600 °C using the chlorination method. Analysis of X-ray diffraction, photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy data confirms that the Pt–Ru alloy has been formed and the atomic fraction of Ru in the alloy was ~0.5. High cathodic oxygen reduction current densities (?160 A?m?2 at 3,000 rev?min?1) have been measured by the RDE method. The O2 diffusion constant (1.9?±?0.3?×?10?5?cm2?s?1) and the number of electrons transferred per electroreduction of one O2 molecule (~4), calculated from the Levich and Koutecky–Levich plots, are in agreement with literature data. Similarly to the Ru/RuO2 system in H2SO4 aqueous solution, nearly capacitive behavior was observed from impedance data at very low ac frequencies, explained by slow electrical double-layer formation limited by the adsorption of reaction intermediates and products into microporous–mesoporous Pt–Ru–C(Mo2C) catalyst. All results obtained for C(Mo2C) and Pt–Ru–C(Mo2C) electrodes have been compared with corresponding data for commercial carbon VULCAN® XC72 (C(Vulcan)) and Pt–Ru–C(Vulcan) electrodes processed and measured in the same experimental conditions. Higher activity for C(Mo2C) and Pt–Ru–C(Mo2C) has been demonstrated.  相似文献

Channel‐rich RuCu snowflake‐like nanosheets (NSs) composed of crystallized Ru and amorphous Cu were used as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and overall water splitting in pH‐universal electrolytes. The optimized RuCu NSs/C‐350 °C and RuCu NSs/C‐250 °C show attractive activities of OER and HER with low overpotentials and small Tafel slopes, respectively. When applied to overall water splitting, the optimized RuCu NSs/C can reach 10 mA cm?2 at cell voltages of only 1.49, 1.55, 1.49 and 1.50 V in 1 m KOH, 0.1 m KOH, 0.5 m H2SO4 and 0.05 m H2SO4, respectively, much lower than those of commercial Ir/C∥Pt/C. The optimized electrolyzer exhibits superior durability with small potential change after up to 45 h in 1 m KOH, showing a class of efficient functional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.  相似文献

A series of branched/crosslinked sulfonated polyimide (B/C‐SPI) membranes were prepared and evaluated as proton‐conducting ionomers based on the new concept of in situ crosslinking from sulfonated polyimide (SPI) oligomers and triamine monomers. Chemical branching and crosslinking in SPI oligomers with 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene as a crosslinker gave the polymer membranes very good water stability and mechanical properties under an accelerated aging treatment in water at 130 °C, despite their high ion‐exchange capacity (2.2–2.6 mequiv g?1). The resulting polymer electrolytes displayed high proton conductivities of 0.2–0.3 S cm?1 at 120 °C in water and reasonably high conductivities of 0.02–0.03 S cm?1 at 50% relative humidity. In a single H2/O2 fuel‐cell system at 90 °C, they exhibited high fuel‐cell performances comparable to those of Nafion 112. The B/C‐SPI membranes also displayed good performances in a direct methanol fuel cell with methanol concentrations as high as 50 wt % that were superior to those of Nafion 112. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a carbon–air battery for power generation based on a solid‐oxide fuel cell (SOFC) integrated with a ceramic CO2‐permeable membrane. An anode‐supported tubular SOFC functioned as a carbon fuel container as well as an electrochemical device for power generation, while a high‐temperature CO2‐permeable membrane composed of a CO32? mixture and an O2? conducting phase (Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9) was integrated for in situ separation of CO2 (electrochemical product) from the anode chamber, delivering high fuel‐utilization efficiency. After modifying the carbon fuel with a reverse Boudouard reaction catalyst to promote the in situ gasification of carbon to CO, an attractive peak power density of 279.3 mW cm?2 was achieved for the battery at 850 °C, and a small stack composed of two batteries can be operated continuously for 200 min. This work provides a novel type of electrochemical energy device that has a wide range of application potentials.  相似文献

A direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) is developed with low catalyst loading at anode and cathode compared to that reported in the literature. Pt/Ru (40%:20% by wt.)/C and Pt-black were used as anode and cathode catalyst with loadings in the range of 0.5–1.2 mg/cm2. The temperatures of anode and cathode were varied from 34 °C to 110 °C, and the pressure was maintained at 1 bar. Although low catalyst loading was used, the cell performance is enhanced by 40–50% with the use of low concentration of sulfuric acid in ethanol and Ni-mesh as current collector at the anode. The power density 15 mW/cm2 at 32 mA/cm2 of current density is obtained from the single cell with 0.5 mg/cm2 loading of Pt–Ru/C at anode (90 °C) and Pt-black at cathode (110 °C). The performance of DEFC increases with the increase in ethanol and sulfuric acid concentrations, electrocatalyst loadings up to 1 mg cm−2 at anode and cathode. However, the performance of DEFC decreases with further increase in electrocatalyst loading.  相似文献

Three different Graphene‐Metallic (Graphene‐Me) nanocomposites – Graphene‐Silver (Graphene‐Ag), Graphene‐Gold (Graphene‐Au) and Graphene‐Platinum (Graphene‐Pt) nanocomposites – were prepared and characterized. The electrochemical performances of these nanocomposites were tested by incorporating them with glassy carbon paste electrode (GCPE) and used them in biofuel cells (BFC) and as amperometric xanthine biosensor transducers. Present work contains the first application of Graphene‐Au and Graphene‐Ag nanocomposite in BFCs and also first application of these Graphene‐Me nanocomposites in xanthine biosensors. Considering BFC, power and current densities were calculated as 2.03 µW cm?2 and 167.46 µA cm?2 for the plain BFC, 3.39 µW cm?2 and 182.53 µA cm?2 for Graphene‐Ag, 4.43 µW cm?2 and 230.15 µA cm?2 for Grapehene‐Au and 6.23 µW cm?2 and 295.23 µA cm?2 for Graphene‐Pt nanocomposite included BFCs respectively. For the amperometric xanthine biosensor linear ranges were obtained in the concentration range between 5 µM and 50 µM with the RSD (n=3 for 30 µM xanthine) value of 4.28 % for plain xanthine biosensor, 3 µM and 50 µM with the RSD (n=3 for 30 µM xanthine) value of 9.37 % for Graphene‐Ag, 5 µM to 20 µM with the RSD (n=3 for 5 µM xanthine) value of 9.00 % and 30 µM to 70 µM with the RSD (n=3 for 30 µM xanthine) value of 8.80 % for Grapehene‐Au and 1 µM and 70 with the the RSD (n=3 for 30 µM xanthine) value of 2.59 % for Grapehene‐Pt based xanthine biosensors respectively.  相似文献

The desorption behavior of a surfactant in a linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) blend at elevated temperatures of 50, 70, and 80 °C was studied with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The composition of the LLDPE blend was 70:30 LLDPE/low‐density polyethylene. Three different specimens (II, III, and IV) were prepared with various compositions of a small molecular penetrant, sorbitan palmitate (SPAN‐40), and a migration controller, poly(ethylene acrylic acid) (EAA), in the LLDPE blend. The calculated diffusion coefficient (D) of SPAN‐40 in specimens II, III, and IV, between 50 and 80 °C, varied from 1.74 × 10?11 to 6.79 × 10?11 cm2/s, from 1.10 × 10?11 to 5.75 × 10?11 cm2/s, and from 0.58 × 10?11 to 4.75 × 10?11 cm2/s, respectively. In addition, the calculated activation energies (ED) of specimens II, III, and IV, from the plotting of ln D versus 1/T between 50 and 80 °C, were 42.9, 52.7, and 65.6 kJ/mol, respectively. These values were different from those obtained between 25 and 50 °C and were believed to have been influenced by the interference of Tinuvin (a UV stabilizer) at elevated temperatures higher than 50 °C. Although the desorption rate of SPAN‐40 increased with the temperature and decreased with the EAA content, the observed spectral behavior did not depend on the temperature and time. For all specimens stored over 50 °C, the peak at 1739 cm?1 decreased in a few days and subsequently increased with a peak shift toward 1730 cm?1. This arose from the carbonyl stretching vibration of Tinuvin, possibly because of oxidation or degradation at elevated temperatures. In addition, the incorporation of EAA into the LLDPE blend suppressed the desorption rate of SPAN‐40 and retarded the appearance of the 1730 cm?1 peak. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Characteristics of fuel cells with supporting Ni-YSZ anode, bilayer YSZ/GDC electrolyte with the thickness of 10 μm, and La2NiO4 + δ cathode are studied. It is shown that when humid (3% water) hydrogen is supplied to the anode and air is supplied to the cathode, the maximum values of cell’s power density are 1.05 and 0.75 W/cm2 at 900 and 800°С, respectively. After the introduction of praseodymium oxide and ceria into the cathode and the anode, respectively, the power density is ca. 1 W/cm2 at 700°С. It is found that the power density of a cell with impregnated electrodes weakly increases with the increase in temperature to ca. 1.4 W/cm2 at 900°С. The analysis of impedance spectra by the distribution of relaxation times shows that such behavior is associated with the gas-diffusion resistance of the SOFC anode. The latter is explained by the low porosity of the anode and the high rate of fuel consumption.  相似文献
