We investigated the possibility to obtain high‐molecular‐weight (HMW) polymers from the monomers of the diallylamine (DAA) series using quantum chemical and experimental methods. Such monomers are known to polymerize into oligomeric products due to the reaction of the degradative chain transfer to the monomer. We studied potential energy profiles of the chain propagation and competing chain transfer reactions, viz., the free radical double bond addition and α‐hydrogen radical abstraction, respectively, for a number of polymerization processes. Calculations were carried in the framework of the polarized continuum solvent model utilizing the procedure based on the semiempirical MNDO‐PM3 background. It was found that the necessary condition for decreasing competitiveness of the chain transfer to the monomer is the availability of monomer molecules in only protonated form in the polymerizing system. Using these results, we developed the strategy for obtaining HMW polymers based on said monomers. We synthesized a monomer system (the equimolar salt of N,N‐diallyl‐N‐methylamine and trifluoroacetic acid) that fully corresponds to such requirements. Novel HMW polymers were then synthesized by radical polymerization of this salt at soft conditions. We established that chain termination is controlled by the bimolecular mechanism. We showed that the degradative chain transfer transforms into the effective chain transfer. The mechanisms of the observed phenomena are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE)) with internal double bond has been reported with high dielectric constant and energy density at room temperature, which is expected to serve as a promising dielectric film in high pulse discharge capacitors. An environmentally friendly one‐pot route, including the controllable hydrogenation via Cu(0) mediated single electron transfer radical chain transfer reaction (SET‐CTR) and dehydrochlorination catalyzed with N‐containing reagent, is successfully developed to synthesize P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE) containing unsaturation. The resultant polymer was carefully characterized with 1H NMR, 19F NMR, and FTIR. The composition of the resultant copolymer is strongly influenced by reaction conditions, including the reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, the types of ligands and solvents. The kinetics data of the chain transfer and elimination reaction demonstrate their well‐controlled feature of the strategy. By shifting the equilibrium between the CTR and elimination reactions dominated by N‐compounds serving as ligands in SET‐CTR and catalyst in the dehydrochlorination of P(VDF‐co‐CTFE), P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE) with tunable TrFE and double‐bond content could be synthesized in this one‐pot route. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone)‐block‐poly(N‐vinyl carbazole)‐block‐poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP‐b‐PVK‐b‐PVP) triblock copolymers were synthesized via sequential reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer/macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthate (RAFT/MADIX) process. First, 1,4‐phenylenebis(methylene)bis(ethyl xanthate) was used as a chain transfer agent to mediate the radical polymerization of N‐vinyl carbazole (NVK). It was found that the polymerization was in a controlled and living manner. Second, one of α,ω‐dixanthate‐terminated PVKs was used as the macromolecular chain transfer agent to mediate the radical polymerization of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) to obtain the triblock copolymers with various lengths of PVP blocks. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the triblock copolymers in bulks were microphase‐separated and that PVK blocks were self‐organized into cylindrical microdomains, depending on the lengths of PVP blocks. In aqueous solutions, all these triblock copolymers can self‐assemble into the spherical micelles. The critical micelle concentrations of the triblock copolymers were determined without external adding fluorescence probe. By analyzing the change in fluorescence intensity as functions of the concentration, it was judged that the onset of micellization occurred at the concentration while the FL intensity began negatively to deviate from the initial linear increase with the concentration. Fluorescence spectroscopy indicates that the self‐assembled nanoobjects of the PVP‐b‐PVK‐b‐PVP triblock copolymers in water were capable of emitting blue/or purple fluorescence under the irradiation of ultraviolet light. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel ABA triblock copolymer comprising double‐bond‐containing poly(phenoxyallene) (PPOA) and polystyrene (PS) segments was synthesized by sequential conventional free radical polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via the site transformation strategy. A new bifunctional initiator containing azo and Br‐containing ATRP initiating groups was prepared using 2‐bromopropionyl chloride, hydroquinone, and 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) as starting materials. Conventional free radical homopolymerization of phenoxyallene with cumulated double bond was performed in toluene to provide a polyallene‐based macroinitiator bearing ATRP initiating groups at both ends, which is stable under UV irradiation and free radical circumstances. PS‐b‐PPOA‐b‐PS triblock copolymer was then obtained by bulk ATRP of styrene initiated by PPOA‐based macroinitiator. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone/methyl acrylate (V/M) copolymers were prepared by free‐radical bulk polymerization using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The copolymer composition of these copolymers was calculated from 1H NMR spectra. The radical reactivity ratios for N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (V) and methyl acrylate (M) were rV = 0.09, rM = 0.44. These reactivity ratios for the copolymerization of V and M were determined using the Kelen–Tudos and nonlinear least‐squares error‐in‐variable methods. The 13C{1H} and 1H NMR spectra of these copolymers overlapped and were complex. The complete spectral assignment of the 13C and 1H NMR spectra were done with distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer and two dimensional 13C‐1H heteronuclear single quantum correlation spectroscopic experiments. The two‐dimensional 1H‐1H homonuclear total correlation spectroscopic NMR spectrum showed the various bond interactions, thus inferring the possible structure of the copolymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work is devoted to the design of a novel family of hydrosoluble biomaterials: poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) (PVP)‐based graft copolymers. A synthesis route has been elaborated in which ω‐functionalized PVP is prepared via chain‐transfer radical polymerization, end‐group modified, and subsequently grafted onto a polyhydroxylated backbone, typically dextran or poly(vinyl alcohol). The resulting graft copolymer biomaterials are designed for use in various biomedical applications, particularly as materials with a stronger potential for plasma expansion than already existing products have. The graft copolymers are potentially degradable because the PVP grafts are connected to the polyol backbone via a hydrolytically labile carbonate or ester linkage. The degradation of the graft copolymers was performed in vitro over a period of 6 weeks. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 3652–3661, 2002  相似文献

In this contribution, we reported a facile synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PMMA‐b‐PVPy) diblock copolymers via sequential radical polymerizations mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide (DIP). It was found that the radical polymerization of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) mediated by DIP was in a controlled and living manner. In contrast, the polymerization of methyl methacrylate mediated by DIP displayed the behavior of telomerization, affording xanthate‐terminated PMMA with a good control of molecular weights while the conversion of monomer was not very high. The xanthate‐terminated PMMA can be successfully used as the macromolecular chain transfer agent for the polymerization of NVP via RAFT/MADIX process and thus PMMA‐b‐PVPy diblock copolymers can be successfully synthesized via sequential radical polymerization mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide. One of these diblock copolymers was incorporated into polybenzoxazine and the nanostructured thermosets were obtained as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, small angle X‐ray scattering, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The formation of nanostructures in polybenzoxazine thermosets was ascribed to a reaction‐induced microphase separation mechanism. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization in‐source decay (MALDI‐ISD) is initiated by hydrogen transfer from matrix molecules to the carbonyl oxygen of peptide backbone with subsequent radical‐induced cleavage leading to c′/z? fragments pair. MALDI‐ISD is a very powerful method to obtain long sequence tags from proteins or to do de novo sequencing of peptides. Besides classical fragmentation, MALDI‐ISD also shows specific fragments for which the mechanism of formation enlightened the MALDI‐ISD process. In this study, the MALDI‐ISD mechanism is reviewed, and a specific mechanism is studied in details: the N‐terminal side of Cys residue (Xxx‐Cys) is described to promote the generation of c′ and w fragments in MALDI‐ISD. Our data suggest that for sequences containing Xxx‐Cys motifs, the N–Cα bond cleavage occurs following the hydrogen attachment to the thiol group of Cys side‐chain. The c?/w fragments pair is formed by side‐chain loss of the Cys residue with subsequent radical‐induced cleavage at the N–Cα bond located at the left side (N‐terminal direction) of the Cys residue. This fragmentation pathway preferentially occurs at free Cys residue and is suppressed when the cysteines are involved in disulfide bonds. Hydrogen attachment to alkylated Cys residues using iodoacetamide gives free Cys residue by the loss of ?CH2CONH2 radical. The presence of alkylated Cys residue also suppress the formation of c?/w fragments pair via the (Cβ)‐centered radical, whereas w fragment is still observed as intense signal. In this case, the z? fragment formed by hydrogen attachment of carbonyl oxygen followed side‐chain loss at alkylated Cys leads to a w fragment. Hydrogen attachment on peptide backbone and side‐chain of Cys residue occurs therefore competitively during MALDI‐ISD process. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This work reveals the preponderance of an intramolecular metal chelation phenomenon in a controlled radical polymerization system involving the reversible trapping of the radical chains by a cobalt complex bis(acetylacetonato)cobalt(II). The cobalt‐mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) of a series of N‐vinyl amides was considered with the aim of studying the effect of the cobalt chelation by the amide moiety of the last monomer unit of the chain. The latter reinforces the cobalt? polymer bond in the order N‐vinylpyrrolidone<N‐vinyl caprolactam<N‐methyl‐N‐vinyl acetamide, and is responsible for the optimal control of the polymerizations observed for the last two monomers. Such a double linkage between the controlling agent and the polymer, through a covalent bond and a dative bond, is unique in the field of controlled radical polymerization and represents a powerful opportunity to fine tune the equilibrium between latent and free radicals. Possible hydrogen bond formation is also taken into account in the case of N‐vinyl acetamide and N‐vinyl formamide. These results are essential for understanding the factors influencing Co? C bond strength in general, and the CMRP mechanism in particular, but also for developing a powerful platform for the synthesis of new precision poly(N‐vinyl amide) materials, which are an important class of polymers that sustain numerous applications today.  相似文献

Surface functionalization in a nanoscopic scaffold is highly desirable to afford nano‐particles with diversified features and functions. Herein are reported the surface decoration of dispersed block copolymer nano‐objects. First, side‐chain double bond containing oleic acid based macro chain transfer agent (macroCTA), poly(2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl oleate) (PMAEO), was synthesized by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and used as a steric stabilizer during the RAFT dispersion block copolymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) in n‐heptane at 70 °C. We have found that block copolymer morphologies could evolve from spherical micelles, through worm to vesicles, and finally to large compound vesicles with the increase of solvophobic poly(BzMA) block length, keeping solvophilic chain length and total solid content constant. Finally, different thiol compounds having alkyl, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and protected amine functionalities have been ligated onto the PMAEO segment, which is prone to functionalization via its reactive double bond through thiol‐ene radical reactions. Thiol‐ene modification reactions of the as‐synthesized nano‐objects retain their morphologies as visualized by field emission‐scanning electron microscopy. Thus, the facile and modular synthetic approach presented in this study allowed in situ preparation of surface modified block copolymer nano‐objects at very high concentration, where renewable resource derived oleate surface in the nanoparticle was functionalized. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low molecular weight (MW) polystyrenes were synthesized by radical polymerization in the presence of catalytic chain‐transfer agents. Synthetic conditions are controlled to produce molecules containing one methyl group at one end as well as a double bond at the other end, capped with a phenyl group. Individual oligomers were separated by liquid chromatography, and the properties were analyzed using NMR, ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, and size exclusion chromatography with light scattering. The UV–vis spectra, proton NMR spectra, and differential refractive‐index increments exhibit an MW dependence of up to six–eight monomer units. The obtained dependencies can be used for precise characterization of the molecular weight distribution of polystyrene obtained by catalytic chain transfer. The double‐bonded end groups were found to be exclusively in the transconfiguration for all oligomers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 1099–1105, 2001  相似文献

Several organostibine chain‐transfer agents possessing polar functional groups have been prepared by the reactions of azo initiators and tetramethyldistibine ( 1 ). Carbon‐centered radicals thermally generated from the azo initiators were trapped by 1 to yield the corresponding organostibine chain‐transfer agents. The high yields observed in the synthesis of the chain‐transfer agents strongly suggest that distibines have excellent radicophilic reactivity. As the reactions proceeded under neutral conditions, functional groups that are incompatible with ionic conditions were incorporated into the chain‐transfer agents. The chain‐transfer agents were used in living radical polymerization to synthesize the corresponding α‐functionalized polymers. As the functional groups in the chain‐transfer agents did not interfere with the polymerization reaction, well‐controlled polymers possessing number‐average molecular weights (Mns) predetermined by the monomer/transfer agent ratios were synthesized with low polydispersity indices (PDIs). The organostibanyl ω‐polymer ends were transformed into a number of different functional groups by radical‐coupling, radical‐addition, and oxidation reactions. Therefore, it was possible to synthesize well‐controlled telechelic polymers with the same and also with different functional groups at their α‐ and ω‐polymer ends. Distibine 1 was also found to increase PDI control in the living radical polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) using a purified organostibine chain‐transfer agent. Well‐controlled poly(methyl methacrylate)s with Mn values ranging from 10 000 to 120 000 with low PDIs (1.05–1.15) were synthesized by the addition of a catalytic amount of 1 . The results have been attributed to the high reactivity of distibine 1 towards polymer‐end radicals, which are spontaneously deactivated to yield organostibine dormant species.  相似文献

We have reported that intramolecular chain‐transfer reaction takes place in radical polymerization of itaconates at high temperatures and/or at low monomer concentrations. In this article, radical polymerizations of di‐n‐butyl itaconate (DBI) were carried out in toluene at 60 °C in the presence of amide compounds. The 13C‐NMR spectra of the obtained poly(DBI)s indicated that the intramolecular chain‐transfer reaction was suppressed as compared with in the absence of amide compounds. The NMR analysis of DBI and N‐ethylacetamide demonstrated both 1:1 complex and 1:2 complex were formed at 60 °C through a hydrogen‐bonding interaction. The ESR analysis of radical polymerization of diisopropyl itaconate (DiPI) was conducted in addition to the NMR analysis of the obtained poly(DiPI). It was suggested that the suppression of the intramolecular chain‐transfer reaction with the hydrogen‐bonding interaction was achieved by controlling the conformation of the side chain at the penultimate monomeric unit of the propagating radical with an isotactic stereosequence. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization of multifunctional acrylate monomers generates crosslinked polymers that are noted for their mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. A common reactive diluent to photopolymerizable formulations is N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), which is known to reduce the inhibition of free radical photopolymerization by atmospheric oxygen. In this work, the copolymerization behavior of NVP was examined in acrylate monomers with two to five functional groups. At concentrations as low as 2 wt %, NVP increases the polymerization rate in copolymerization with multifunctional acrylate monomer. The relative rate enhancement associated with adding NVP increases dramatically as the number of acrylate double bonds changes from two to five. The influence of NVP on polymerization kinetics is related to synergistic cross‐propagation between NVP and acrylate monomer, which becomes increasingly favorable with diffusion limitations. This synergy extends bimolecular termination into higher double bond conversion through reaction diffusion controlled termination. Copolymerizing concentrations of 5–30 DB% NVP with diacrylate or pentaacrylate monomer also increases Young's modulus and the glass transition temperature (Tg) in comparison to neat acrylate polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Vinyl‐conjugated monomer (methyl acrylate, MA) and allyl 2‐bromopropanoate (ABP)‐possessing unconjugated C?C and active C? Br bonds were polymerized via the Cu(0)‐mediated simultaneous chain‐ and step‐growth radical polymerization at ambient temperature using Cu(0) as catalyst, N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as ligand and dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent. The conversion was reached higher than 98% within 20 h. The obtained polymers showed block structure consisting of polyester and vinyl polymer moieties. The Cu(0)‐catalyzed simultaneous chain‐ and step‐growth radical polymerization mechanism was demonstrated by NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight, and GPC analyses. Furthermore, the obtained copolymers of MA and ABP were further modified with poly(N‐isopropylamide) through radical thiol‐ene “click” chemistry from the terminal double bond. The thermoresponsive behavior of this block copolymer was investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 3907–3916  相似文献

Chlorine radical, which is classically generated by the homolysis of Cl2 under UV irradiation, can abstract a hydrogen atom from an unactivated C(sp3)?H bond. We herein demonstrate the use of HCl as an effective hydrogen‐atom‐transfer catalyst precursor activated by an organic acridinium photoredox catalyst under visible‐light irradiation for C?H alkylation and allylation. The key to success relied on the utilization of microtubing reactors to maintain the volatile HCl catalyst. This photomediated chlorine‐based C?H activation protocol is effective for a variety of unactivated C(sp3)?H bond patterns, even with primary C(sp3)?H bonds, as in ethane. The merit of this strategy is illustrated by rapid access to several pharmaceutical drugs from abundant unfunctionalized alkane feedstocks.  相似文献

Combining single electron transfer between a donor substrate and a catalyst‐activated acceptor substrate with a stereocontrolled radical–radical recombination enables the visible‐light‐driven catalytic enantio‐ and diastereoselective synthesis of 1,2‐amino alcohols from trifluoromethyl ketones and tertiary amines. With a chiral iridium complex acting as both a Lewis acid and a photoredox catalyst, enantioselectivities of up to 99 % ee were achieved. A quantum yield of <1 supports the proposed catalytic cycle in which at least one photon is needed for each asymmetric C? C bond formation mediated by single electron transfer.  相似文献

Photooxidation of alkanes by dioxygen occurred under visible light irradiation of 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐p‐benzoquinone (DDQ) which acts as a super photooxidant. Solvent‐free hydroxylation of cyclohexane and alkanes is initiated by electron transfer from alkanes to the singlet and triplet excited states of DDQ to afford the corresponding radical cations and DDQ??, as revealed by femtosecond laser‐induced transient absorption measurements. Alkane radical cations readily deprotonate to produce alkyl radicals, which react with dioxygen to afford alkylperoxyl radicals. Alkylperoxyl radicals abstract hydrogen atoms from alkanes to yield alkyl hydroperoxides, accompanied by regeneration of alkyl radicals to constitute the radical chain reactions, so called autoxidation. The radical chain is terminated in the bimolecular reactions of alkylperoxyl radicals to yield the corresponding alcohols and ketones. DDQ??, produced by the photoinduced electron transfer from alkanes to the excited state of DDQ, disproportionates with protons to yield DDQH2.  相似文献

Chain transfer to solvent has been investigated in the conventional radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP) of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) at 120 °C. The extent of chain transfer to DMF can significantly impact the maximum attainable molecular weight in both systems. Based on a theoretical treatment, it has been shown that the same value of chain transfer to solvent constant, Ctr,S, in DMF at 120 °C (within experimental error) can account for experimental molecular weight data for both conventional radical polymerization and NMP under conditions where chain transfer to solvent is a significant end‐forming event. In NMP (and other controlled/living radical polymerization systems), chain transfer to solvent is manifested as the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) going through a maximum value with increasing monomer conversion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
