Singlet and triplet low-lying states of the 4-dimethylaminobenzonitrile and its derivatives have been studied by the density functional theory and ab initio methodologies. Calculations reveal that the existence of the methyl groups in the phenyl ring and the amino twisting significantly modify properties of their excited states. A twisted singlet intramolecular charge-transfer state can be accessed through decay of the second planar singlet excited state with charge-transfer character along the amino twisting coordinate or by an intramolecular charge-transfer reaction involved with a locally first excited singlet state. Plausible charge-transfer triplet states and intersystem crossing processes among singlet and triplet states have been explored by spin-orbit coupling calculations. The intersystem crossing process was predicted to be the dominant deactivation channel of the photoexcited 4-dimethylaminobenzonitrile.  相似文献

We have analyzed singlet and triplet excitation energies in oligothiophenes (up to five rings) using time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) with different exchange-correlation functionals and compared them with results from the approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles model (CC2) and experimental data. The excitation energies have been calculated in geometries obtained by TD-DFT optimization of the lowest excited singlet state and in the ground-state geometries of the neutral and anionic systems. TD-DFT methods underestimate photoluminescence energies but the energy difference between singlet and triplet states shows trends with the chain-length similar to CC2. We find that the second triplet excited state is below the first singlet excited state for long oligomers in contrast with the previous assignment of Rentsch et al. (Phys.Chem. Chem. Phys. 1999, 1, 1707). Their photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy measurements are better described by considering higher triplet excited states.  相似文献

We present a combined density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) study of the geometry, electronic structure, and absorption and emission properties of the tetranuclear "cubane" Cu4I4py4 (py = pyridine) system. The geometry of the singlet ground state and of the two lowest triplet states of the title complex were optimized, followed by TDDFT excited-state calculations. This procedure allowed us to characterize the nature of the excited states involved in the absorption spectrum and those responsible for the dual emission bands observed for this complex. In agreement with earlier experimental proposals, we find that while in absorption the halide-to-pyridine charge-transfer excited state (XLCT*) has a lower energy than the cluster-centered excited state (CC*), a strong geometrical relaxation on the triplet cluster-centered state surface leads to a reverse order of the excited states in emission.  相似文献

The electronic absorption spectrum of anthracene-9,10-endoperoxide (APO) has been investigated by means of multiconfigurational multi-state second order perturbation theory on complete active space self-consistent field wavefunctions (MS-CASPT2/CASSCF) and two single reference methods: time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and coupled cluster of second order (CC2). After testing several active spaces and basis sets, a CAS (14,12) active space together with an ANO-S basis set was found an appropriate choice to describe the vertical singlet and triplet electronic states of APO. Unfortunately, TD-DFT and CC2 methods cannot reproduce the MS-CASPT2 and experimental spectrum. Our MS-CASPT2//CASSCF(14,12)/ANO-S calculations predict a predominant pi*(OO)sigma*(OO) character for the lowest singlet excited state S(1) at 3.85 eV. Accordingly, the lowest singlet state of APO should be responsible for homolysis of the endoperoxide group. The next two absorbing excited states, experimentally proposed to be responsible for singlet oxygen production and therefore connected to the biological interest of APO, have been computed vertically at 4.34 and 4.59 eV and assigned to pi(CC)pi*(CC) and pi*(OO)pi*(CC) transitions, respectively. The vertical triplet electronic spectrum follows the singlet vertical spectrum ordering. The high density of triplet and singlet excited states of different nature within few eV points to the possibility of intersystem crossings between potential energy surfaces of different multiplicity.  相似文献

A series of Ir(III)-based heteroleptic complexes with phenylpyridine (ppy) and 2-(5-phenyl-4H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyridine (ptpy) derivatives as coordinating ligands has been characterized by a number of experimental and theoretical techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were able to reproduce and rationalize the experimental redox and excited-states properties of the Ir complexes under study. The introduction of fluorine and trifluoromethyl substituents is found not only to modulate the emission energy but also often to change the ordering of the lowest excited triplet states and hence their localization. The lowest triplet states are best characterized as local excitations of one of the chromophoric ligands (ppy or ptpy). The admixture of metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) and ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) character is small and strongly depends on the nature of the excited state; their role is, however, primordial in defining the radiative decay rate of the complexes. The extent of charge-transfer contributions depends on the energy gaps between the relevant molecular orbitals, which can be modified by the substitution pattern.  相似文献

Strongly luminescent neutral copper(I) complexes of the type Cu(pop)(NN), with pop = bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether and NN = bis(pyrazol-1-yl)borohydrate (pz(2)BH(2)), tetrakis(pyrazol-1-yl)borate (pz(4)B), or bis(pyrazol-1-yl)-biphenyl-borate (pz(2)Bph(2)), are readily accessible in reactions of Cu(acetonitrile)(4)(+) with equimolar amounts of the pop and NN ligands at ambient temperature. All products were characterized by means of single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The compounds exhibit very strong blue/white luminescence with emission quantum yields of up to 90%. Investigations of spectroscopic properties and the emission decay behavior in the temperature range between 1.6 K and ambient temperature allow us to assign the emitting electronic states. Below 100 K, the emission decay times are in the order of many hundreds of microseconds. Therefore, it is concluded that the emission stems from the lowest triplet state. This state is assigned to a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer state (3MLCT) involving Cu-3dand pop-π* orbitals. With temperature increase, the emission decay time is drastically reduced, e.g. to 13 μs [corrected] (Cu(pop)-(pz(2)Bph(2))), at ambient temperature. At this temperature, the complexes exhibit high emission quantum yields, as neat material or doped into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). This behavior is assigned to an efficient thermal population of a singlet state (being classified as (1)MLCT), which lies only 800 to 1300 cm(-1) above the triplet state, depending on the individual complex. Thus, the resulting emission at ambient temperature largely represents a fluorescence. For applications in OLEDs and LEECs, for example, this type of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) creates a new mechanism that allows to harvest both singlet and triplet excitons (excitations) in the lowest singlet state. This effect of singlet harvesting leads to drastically higher radiative rates than obtainable for emissions from triplet states of Cu(I) complexes.  相似文献

Excited states of ruthenium polypyridine-type complexes have always attracted the interest of chemists. We have recently found evidence of a remarkable long-lived excited state (30 micros) for a Ru(II) complex containing a heteroditopic ligand that can be viewed as a fused phenanthroline and salophen ligand.1 To unravel this intriguing electronic property, we have used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the ground-state properties of [(bpy)(2)Ru(LH(2))](2+), where LH(2) represents N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-(1,10-phenanthroline)diamine. Excited singlet and triplet states have been examined by the time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) formalism and the theoretical findings have been compared with those for the parent complex [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+). The outstanding result is the presence of excited states lower in energy than the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer states, originating from intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) from the phenolic rings to the phenanthroline part of the coordinated LH(2). The spin density distribution for the lowest triplet state provides evidence that it is in fact the lowest triplet state of the free ligand. Correlation between the energy level diagram of orbitals for the ground state and that for the (3)ILCT state clearly establishes that the ruthenium retains its formal Ru(II) oxidation state. The quenching of the luminescence and the evidence of the long-lived excited state observed for [(bpy)(2)Ru(LH(2))](2+) are discussed in the light of the computational results.  相似文献

The photoinduced electron transfer of a series of meta- and para-linked triphenylamine-naphthalimide dyads, N-{3- and 4-[bis(4-R-substituted phenyl)amino]phenyl}-1,8-naphthalimide, 1m,p (R = H), 2m,p (R = Me), 3m,p (R = OMe), and 4m,p (R = NMe2) was investigated in toluene and DMF. The singlet charge-transfer (CT) states were observed in all cases. The decay rates were found to be faster in DMF (tau = 6.5 ps to 100 ps) than those in toluene (tau = 190 ps to 7 ns). The long-lived triplet CT states were observed in toluene for 3 (ca. 10% contribution, tau = 670 ns for 3m, 240 ns for 3p). No long-lived species were detected in DMF. The decay rates were somewhat faster in the para-isomers than in the meta-isomers in most cases. The photolysis of 5 (p-phenylene extended analogue of 3, R = OMe) gave a singlet CT state and a locally excited triplet state on the naphthalimide chromophore.  相似文献

The primary photophysical and photochemical processes in the photochemistry of 1-acetoxy-2-methoxyanthraquinone (1a) were studied using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Excitation of 1a at 270 nm results in the population of a set of highly excited singlet states. Internal conversion to the lowest singlet npi* excited state, followed by an intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) process, proceeds with a time constant of 150 +/- 90 fs. The 1npi* excited state undergoes very fast intersystem crossing (ISC, 11 +/- 1 ps) to form the lowest triplet pipi* excited state which contains excess vibrational energy. The vibrational cooling occurs somewhat faster (4 +/- 1 ps) than ISC. The primary photochemical process, migration of acetoxy group, proceeds on the triplet potential energy surface with a time constant of 220 +/- 30 ps. The transient absorption spectra of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states of 1a, as well as the triplet excited state of the product, 9-acetoxy-2-methoxy-1,10-anthraquinone (2a), were detected. The assignments of the transient absorption spectra were supported by time-dependent DFT calculations of the UV-vis spectra of the proposed intermediates. All of the stationary points for acyl group migration on the triplet and ground state singlet potential energy surfaces were localized, and the influence of the acyl group substitution on the rate constants of the photochemical and thermal processes was analyzed.  相似文献

Low-lying singlet and triplet electronic excited states of ClOOCl are presented. Calculations of the excitation energies and oscillator strengths are reported using excited state coupled cluster response methods, as well as the complete active space self-consistent field method with the full Breit-Pauli spin-orbit operator. These calculations predict that for ClOOCl there should be a weakly absorbing triplet state lying below the lowest absorbing singlet excited state. This state is predicted to have an absorption maximum at about 385 +/- 25 nm. This lowest triplet state is calculated to be dissociative and leads to ClOO+Cl.  相似文献

In this article, the influence of the tert‐butyl unit on the photodeactivation pathways of Pt[O^N^C^N] (O^N^C^N=2‐(4‐(3,5‐di‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐6‐(3‐(pyridin‐2‐l)phenyl) pyridin‐2‐yl)phenolate) is investigated by DFT/TDDFT calculations. To further explore the factors that determine the radiative processes, the transition dipole moments of the singlet excited states, spin–orbit coupling (SOC) matrix elements, and energy gaps between the lowest triplet excited states and singlet excited states are calculated. As demonstrated by the results, compared with Pt‐3 , Pt‐1 and Pt‐2 have larger SOC matrix elements between the lowest triplet excited states and singlet excited states, an indicator that they have faster radiative decay processes. In addition, the SOC matrix elements between the lowest triplet excited states and ground states are also computed to elucidate the temperature‐independent non‐radiative decay processes. Moreover, the temperature‐dependent non‐radiative decay mechanisms are also explored via the potential energy profiles.  相似文献

Density functional theory and CASSCF calculations have been used to determine equilibrium geometries and vibrational frequencies of metal-capped one-dimensional pi-conjugated complexes (H3P)Au(C[triple chemical bond]C)(n)(Ph) (n = 1-6), (H3P)Au(C[triple chemical bond]CC6H4)(C[triple chemical bond]CPh), and H3P--Au(C[triple chemical bond]CC6H4)C[triple chemical bond]CAu--PH3 in their ground states and selected low-lying pi(pi)* excited states. Vertical excitation energies for spin-allowed singlet-singlet and spin-forbidden singlet-triplet transitions determined by the time-dependent density functional theory show good agreement with available experimental observations. Calculations indicate that the lowest energy 3(pi(pi)*) excited state is unlikely populated by the direct electronic excitation, while the low-lying singlet and triplet states, slightly higher in energy than the lowest triplet state, are easily accessible by the excitation light used in experiments. A series of radiationless transitions among related excited states yield the lowest 3(pi(pi)*) state, which has enough long lifetimes to exhibit its photochemical reactivities.  相似文献

The synthesis, electrochemistry, and photophysical behavior of a Pt(II) terpyridyl perylenediimide (PDI) acetylide (1) charge-transfer complex is reported. The title compound exhibits strong (ε ≈ 5 × 10(4) M(-1)cm(-1)) low-energy PDI acetylide-based π-π* absorption bands in the visible range extending to 600 nm, producing highly quenched singlet fluorescence (Φ = 0.014 ± 0.001, τ = 109 ps) with respect to a nonmetalated PDI model chromophore. Nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed the presence of a long excited-state lifetime (372 ns in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran) with transient features consistent with the PDI-acetylide triplet state, ascertained by direct comparison to a model Pt(II) PDI-acetylide complex lacking low-energy charge-transfer transitions. For the first time, time-resolved step-scan FT-IR spectroscopy was used to characterize the triplet excited state of the PDI-acetylide sensitized in the title compound and its associated model complex. The observed red shifts (~30-50 cm(-1)) in the C═O and C≡C vibrations of the two Pt(II) complexes in the long-lived excited state are consistent with formation of the (3)PDI acetylide state and found to be in excellent agreement with the expected change in the relevant DFT-calculated IR frequencies in the nonmetalated PDI model chromophore (ground singlet state and lowest triplet excited state). Formation of the PDI triplet excited state in the title chromophore was also supported by sensitization of the singlet oxygen photoluminescence centered at ~1275 nm in air-saturated acetonitrile solution, Φ((1)O(2)) = 0.52. In terms of light emission, only residual PDI-based red fluorescence could be detected and no corresponding PDI-based phosphorescence was observed in the visible or NIR region at 298 or 77 K in the Pt(II) terpyridyl perylenediimideacetylide.  相似文献

Evidence is presented which indicates that singlet → triplet intersystem crossing from the charge-transfer singlet state of electron donor-acceptor complexes is efficient only when a locally excited triplet state of a component molecule (donor or acceptor) lies below the charge-transfer singlet state.  相似文献

A procedure is outlined for the calculation of molecular static electric polarizabilities in excited singlet and triplet states using the ”finite perturbation theory“ in conjunction with the CNDO/S CI method. Numerical results for the ground and the three lowest excited singlet and triplet states of naphthalene are presented. It turns out that the generalized Hellmann-Feynman theorem is approximately valid for the CNDO/S CI wavefunctions and that triplet and singlet state polarizabilities in states of the same symmetry may strongly differ.  相似文献

Extensive time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) and DFT/multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations are performed on the singlet and triplet excited states of free-base porphyrin, with emphasis on intersystem crossing processes. The equilibrium geometries, as well as the vertical and adiabatic excitation energies of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states are determined. Single and double proton-transfer reactions in the first excited singlet state are explored. Harmonic vibrational frequencies are calculated at the equilibrium geometries of the ground state and of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states. Furthermore, spin–orbit coupling matrix elements of the lowest singlet and triplet states and their numerical derivatives with respect to nuclear displacements are computed. It is shown that opening of an unprotonated pyrrole ring as well as excited-state single and double proton transfer inside the porphyrin cavity lead to crossings of the potential energy curves of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states. It is also found that displacements along out-of-plane normal modes of the first excited singlet state cause a significant increase of the 2|Hso|S1>, 1|Hso|S1>, and 1|Hso|S0> spin–orbit coupling matrix elements. These phenomena lead to efficient radiationless deactivation of the lowest excited states of free-base porphyrin via intercombination conversion. In particular, the S1→T1 population transfer is found to proceed at a rate of ≈107 s−1 in the isolated molecule.  相似文献

Abstract— –Estimation of lowest excited triplet and singlet state dissociation constants of some nitro-aromatic acids and bases, from shifts in their phosphorescence and absorption spectra, respectively, indicate that intramolecular charge transfer to the nitro group is much more important in the lowest excited singlet state than in the ground or lowest excited triplet states. As a result, the effect of a nitro group on the acidity of the lowest excited singlet state of an acid or base is more exaggerated than that on the ground or lowest excited triplet state of the same compound. Furthermore, the basicity of the nitro group is greatly enhanced in the lowest excited singlet state. On this basis the increased rate of photoreduction of nitrobenzene in acidic solutions is found to be thermodynamically unfeasible in the lowest excited triplet state. Although the reaction is thermodynamically feasible in the lowest excited singlet state, the short lifetime of that state may make the reaction kinetically unfeasible. Rate-Hammett acidity profiles are therefore inadequate to alone establish the mechanism of photoreduction of nitrobenzene.  相似文献

Low-lying excited electronic states of an important class of molecules known as push-pull chromophores are central to understanding their potential nonlinear optical properties. Here we report that a combination of high-sensitivity nanosecond time-resolved dispersive IR spectroscopy and DFT calculations on p-nitroaniline (PNA), a prototypical push-pull molecule, reveals that PNA in the lowest excited triplet state has a partial quinoid structure. In this structure, the quinoid configuration is restricted to a part of the phenyl ring adjacent to the NO(2) group. The partial quinoid structure of PNA cannot be explained by a commonly used hybrid of a neutral form and a zwitterionic charge-transfer form. Our findings not only cast doubt on the general applicability of the classical way of looking at excited states, based exclusively on characteristic resonance structures, but also provide deeper insights into excited-state structure of highly polarizable molecular systems.  相似文献

Steady state absorption and fluorescence as well as the time resolved absorption studies in the pico and subpicosecond time domain have been performed to characterize the excited singlet and triplet states of Michler's ketone (MK). The nature of the lowest excited singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) states depends on the polarity of the solvent - in nonpolar solvents they have either pure nπ * character or mixed character of nπ * and ππ * states but in more polar solvents the states have CT character. Concentration dependence of the shapes of the fluorescence as well the excited singlet and triplet absorption spectra provide the evidence for the association of the MK molecules in the ground state.  相似文献

Local density and generalized gradient approximation time-dependent density functional methods have been used for calculation of the singlet and triplet excited states of nickel-porphine, Ni-tetraphenyloporphine, and Ni-octaethyloporphyrine. Special attention is paid to metal-ligand transitions and d-d transitions. It is shown that the lowest exited singlet states of the three compounds can be described as a transfer of an electron from the porphine ring to the d(x2-y2) orbital of the nickel atom. On the other hand, the lowest excited triplet state arises from promotion of an electron between two nickel d orbitals, an occupied d(z2) and an empty d(x2-y2). It is proposed that a rapid quenching of the excited singlet states is due to an ultrafast intersystem crossing between 1Eg)and 3Eg or 3B1g states.  相似文献
