A general picture of refractive index change mechanisms in glass modified by a femtosecond laser has proven elusive. In this paper, Raman microscopy was used in conjunction with refractive near‐field profilometry to analyse the structure of borosilicate glass (Schott BK7) modified by a femtosecond laser and determine the mechanism of the observed refractive index change. For a pulse repetition rate of 1 kHz, it was determined that the refractive index change was due to an elevated population of non‐bridging oxygen atoms, resulting in more ionic bonds forming within the glass network and increasing the molar refractivity of the glass. For a pulse repetition rate of 5.1 MHz, the dominant mechanism of refractive index change was densification and rarefaction of the glass network. Different refractive index change mechanisms were attributed to different thermal conditions imparted to the glass under different pulse repetition rates. Implications for device fabrication are also discussed. These findings constitute an important step toward a complete overview of femtosecond‐laser‐induced refractive index change in glass. The propagation of femtosecond laser pulses in N2-filled hollow fibers is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The laser pulse aligns the N2 molecules and changes the refractive index, which meanwhile modulates the spectrum of the pulse in turn. The dependence of the spectral modulation on the gas temperature is investigated. We find that both spectral broadening and frequency red-shift are enhanced at low temperature. The degree of enhancement is found to be dependent on the pulse duration. Based on our findings, we propose a method for femtosecond pulse spectral broadening and few-cycle pulse generation via the molecular alignment. 相似文献

We investigated the femtosecond laser writing of optical waveguides inside Foturan glass at various pulse energies and focusing
depths. An optimal waveguide fabricated solely by femtosecond laser irradiation showed a refractive index modulation of ∼1.7×10-3 and a minimum transmission loss of ∼0.80 dB/cm. This type of waveguide had lower transmission loss than those fabricated
by a hybrid process of femtosecond laser exposure and following thermal treatment. An optical splitter was also fabricated
at high pulse energy.

We present a practical method to determine femtosecond laser induced refractive index changes in transparent materials. Based on an iterative Fourier transform algorithm, this technique spatially resolves the refractive index of complex structures by combining the dimensions of the modified region with the corresponding phase change extracted from far-field intensity measurements. A simple and repeatable method using femtosecond laser pulse train to fabricate nanostructured substrates with silver nanoparticles over a large area for surface-enhanced Raman scattering is reported. The method involves two steps: (1)?femtosecond laser pulse train micromachining and roughening and (2)?femtosecond laser processing of the substrates in a silver nitrate solution. Surface modification is investigated experimentally by varying the time delay of the double femtosecond laser pulse train. With time delay ranging from 200 to 600?fs, the different enhancement factors were observed. This study demonstrates that a maximum enhancement factor of 6.8×106, measured by 10-6 M Rhodamine 6G solution, can be achieved at the time delay of 400?fs. 相似文献

We study, both experimentally and numerically, the variations of the refractive index at the filamentation of a femtosecond laser pulse in a fused silica. Using the polarigraphy and shadowgraphy techniques, we investigate the spatio-temporal variations of the refractive index induced by Kerr and plasma nonlinearities. The induced variations of the refractive index play the role of dynamic lenses: focusing for Kerr nonlinearity and defocusing for plasma nonlinearity. We show that intensity saturation occurs at the distance, where the total optical force of Kerr and plasma nonlinear lenses reaches its maximum. 相似文献

提出了一种实现大行程飞秒激光脉冲对相位控制的方法。其设计思想是:在迈克耳孙干涉仪中,利用改变激光偏振态的方法改变输出两光束的光程差因子。在对He-Ne激光输出的两束光实现相位锁定的基础上,进而提出了一种可对于超短激光双脉冲相对相位差实现超大行程控制的方法。对He-Ne激光的动态相位锁定、以及飞秒激光脉冲对的相对相位差控制分别作了实验验证。对He-Ne激光的静态相位锁定结果表明干涉仪两臂光程差可以控制在纳米精度;而飞秒激光脉冲测量自相关曲线与理论拟合结果非常接近,经傅里叶变换可得到较好的单峰谱图。该系统能够在实验范围中几乎无行程限制地实现飞秒激光脉冲对的相对相位动态稳定控制。 相似文献

The birefringence of a linearly polarized femtosecond laser filament in gases has been previously established. In this work, we report the time-dependent refractive index measurements of the filament based upon the spectral modulation of a weak probe pulse in air and in argon gas at 1 atmospheric pressure. The polarization dependence of the refractive index modulation induced by the delayed molecular alignment and by the electronic Kerr effect is highlighted. A numerical simulation of the refractive indices, which takes into account the molecular alignment, the electronic Kerr non-linearity and the plasma, is in good agreement with the measurements. 相似文献

light, both having a wavelength of 532 nm. The saturation value of the refractive index changes in as-grown samples is found

We demonstrate that a driving ultrashort laser pulse undergoing filamentation can induce a remarkably large birefringence in Argon, resulting in an ultrafast “half-wave plate” for a copropagating non-filamenting probe beam. Such femtosecond birefringence, which originates from the difference between the nonlinear refractive indices induced by the filament on the axes parallel and orthogonal to its own polarization, opens the way to potential ultrafast Kerr-gates whose ultimate time-duration is only restricted by the duration of the driving pulse. We also show that the induced birefringence is transversely inhomogeneous, resulting from to the intensity profile of the driving pulse. 相似文献
