Gas–liquid two-phase flow in a microfluidic T-junction with nearly square microchannels of 113 μm hydraulic diameter was investigated experimentally and numerically. Air and water superficial velocities were 0.018–0.791 m/s and 0.042–0.757 m/s, respectively. Three-dimensional modeling was performed with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT and the volume of fluid (VOF) model. Slug flow (snapping/breaking/jetting) and stratified flow were observed experimentally. Numerically predicted void fraction followed a linear relationship with the homogeneous void fraction, while experimental values depended on the superficial velocity ratio UG/UL. Higher experimental velocity slip caused by gas inlet pressure build-up and oscillation caused deviation from numerical predictions. Velocity slip was found to depend on the cross-sectional area coverage of the gas slug, the formation of a liquid film and the presence of liquid at the channel corners. Numerical modeling was found to require improvement to treat the contact angle and contact line slip, and could benefit from the use of a dynamic boundary condition to simulate the compressible gas phase inlet reservoir.  相似文献

The study considers the prediction of the entrained liquid fraction in adiabatic gas–liquid annular two-phase flow in vertical pipes. Nine empirical correlations have been tested against an experimental data bank drawn together in this study containing 1504 points for 8 different gas–liquid combinations and 19 different tube diameters from 5.00 mm to 57.1 mm. The correlation of Sawant, Ishii and Mishima and the one of Oliemans, Pots and Trompé were found to best reproduce the available data. A new correlating approach, derived from both physical intuition and dimensional analysis and capable of providing further physical insight into the liquid film atomization process, was proposed and worked better than any of the existing methods. This new correlation is based on the core flow Weber number that is also a controlling dimensionless group in determining the wall shear stress and associated frictional pressure gradient of annular flows.  相似文献

Heat transfer in complex physical situations such as nucleate boiling, quenching and dropwise condensation is strongly affected by the presence of a liquid–vapor–solid triple contact line, where intense energy transfer and phase change occur. A novel experimental technique for the detection of the liquid–vapor–solid line in these situations is presented. The technique is based on high-speed infrared (IR) thermometry through an IR-transparent silicon wafer heater; hence the name DEPIcT, or DEtection of Phase by Infrared Thermometry. Where the heater surface is wet, the IR camera measures the temperature of the hot water in contact with the heater. On the other hand, where vapor (whose IR absorptivity is very low) is in contact with the heater, the IR light comes from the cooler water beyond the vapor. The resulting IR image appears dark (cold) in dry spots and bright (hot) in wetted area. Using the contrast between the dark and bright areas, we can visualize the distribution of the liquid and gas phases in contact with the heater surface, and thus identify the liquid–vapor–solid contact line. In other words, we measure temperature beyond the surface to detect phases on the surface. It was shown that even small temperature differences (∼1 °C) can yield a sharp identification of the contact line, within about 100 μm resolution. DEPIcT was also shown to be able to detect thin liquid layers, through the analysis of interference patterns.  相似文献

Gate valve is mainly used to turn on or turn off the pipeline in pneumatic conveying. When the gate valve is fully open, the particles are easy to collide with the cavity rear wall and enter into the cavity, resulting in particles’ accumulation in the cavity. The particles in cavity will accumulate between the cavity bottom and the flashboard bottom wall and prevent the gate from turning off normally. Meanwhile, the particles’ collision with cavity rear wall will cause serious erosion. Both the particles’ accumulation and erosion will cause the poor sealing of the gate valve, further resulting in the leakage of the pipeline system. To reduce the particles’ accumulation in cavity and erosion on cavity when the gate valve is fully open, we simplify the gate valve into a cavity structure and study it. We find that adding a slope upstream the cavity can effectively reduce the particles’ accumulation in the cavity and the erosion on the cavity rear wall. In this work, Eulerian–Lagrangian method in commercial code (FLUENT) was used to study the gas–solid two-phase flow and erosion characteristics of a cavity with a slope. The particle distribution shows that the particles with Stokes number St = 1.3 and St = 13 cannot enter the cavity due to the slope, but the particles with St = 0.13 enter the cavity following the gas. For St = 13, the particles collide with the wall many times in the ideal cavity. Erosion results show that the slope can transfer the erosion on cavity rear wall to the slope and reduce the maximum erosion rate of the wall near the cavity to some degrees.  相似文献

Turbulent flow and convective heat transfer of a nanofluid made of Al2O3 (1–4 vol.%) and water through a square duct is numerically studied. Single-phase model, volumetric concentration, temperature-dependent physical properties, uniform wall heat flux boundary condition and Renormalization Group Theory k-ε turbulent model are used in the computational analysis. A comparison of the results with the previous experimental and numerical data revealed 8.3 and 10.2 % mean deviations, respectively. Numerical results illustrated that Nu number is directly proportional with Re number and volumetric concentration. For a given Re number, increasing the volumetric concentration of nanoparticles does not have significant effect on the dimensionless velocity contours. At a constant dimensionless temperature, increasing the particle volume concentration increases the size of the temperature profile. Maximum value of dimensionless temperature increases with increasing x/Dh value for a given Re number and volumetric concentration.  相似文献

Numerical study using computational fluid dynamics has been carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a laboratory fluidized bed reactor. The fluidized bed reactor of vTI (Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute)-Institute of Wood Technology and Wood Biology is modeled. For the simulation of multiphase flow and thermal fields, an Eulerian–Eulerian approach is applied. The flow and thermal characteristics of the reactor are fully investigated for the wide range of superficial gas velocities and two different particle diameters. In particular, the contributions of the gas bubble and emulsion phase flows on the wall heat transfer are scrutinized. From the predicted results, it is fully elucidated that particular near-wall bubble motions mainly govern the wall heat transfer.  相似文献

A visualized investigation was carried out on the effect of the diverging angle on the bubble motion and interfacial behavior in a Venturi-type bubble generator. It was found two or three large vortexes formed in the diverging section, resulting in strong reentrant jet flow in the front of the bubbles or slugs rushing out of the throat. The jet flow in return bumps into the ongoing bubbles or slugs, leading to strong interaction between the gas and liquid phases. The diverging angle has significant influence on the reentrant flow process and the performance of the bubble generator as well.Increasing the diverging angle results in the reentrant flow moving further forward to the upstream and intensifies the interaction between the two phases. As a consequence, the breakup or collapse of bubbles becomes more violent, whereby finer bubbles are generated. As such, the reentrant flow strongly links to the performance of the Venturi channel taken as a bubble generator, and that a moderate increase in the diverging angle can improve its performance without additional increase in flow resistance like that by increasing liquid flow rate.  相似文献

The study considers algebraic turbulence modeling in adiabatic gas–liquid annular two-phase flow. After reviewing the existing literature, two new algebraic turbulence models are proposed for both the liquid film and the droplet laden gas core of annular two-phase flow. Both turbulence models are calibrated with experimental data taken from the open literature and their performance critically assessed. Although the proposed turbulence models reproduce the key parameters of annular flow well (average liquid film thickness and pressure gradient) and the predicted velocity profiles for the core flow compare favorably with available core flow velocity measurements, a more accurate experimental database is required to further improve the models accuracy and range of applicability.  相似文献

The heat transfer and flow characteristics of silver (Ag) Ethylene glycol (EG) nanofluids, flowing through a tubular heat exchanger were experimentally investigated. The spherically shaped Ag nanoparticles of an average size of 10–65 nm were dispersed in EG in a 0.1–2.0 vol%. The test results reveal that the convective heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of the Ag–EG nanofluids increased from 39.5 to 49 and 1.42 to 23.7 % respectively, with increased nanoparticles concentration.  相似文献

In this study, experiments on fly ash conveying were carried out with a home-made long-distance positive-pressure pneumatic conveying system equipped with a high performance electrical capacitance tomography system to observe the transient characteristics of gas–solid two-phase flow. The experimental results indicated that solids throughput increased with increasing solids–gas ratio when the conveying pipeline was not plugged. Moreover, the optimum operating state was determined for the 1000 m long conveying pipeline with a throttle plate of 26 orifices. At this state the solids throughput was about 12.97 t/h. Additionally, the transportation pattern of fly ash gradually changed from sparse–dense flow to partial and plug flows with increasing conveying distance because of the conveying pressure loss. These experimental results provide important reference data for the development of pneumatic conveying technology.  相似文献

We investigated a flexible wing that can function as a folding fan by vibrating smoothly on a heated surface, and the effects of this vibration on heat transfer. For flexible up–down vibrations of the wing in a pulsating flow, we propose a novel milli-scale flexible wing shape with a relatively large body and a narrow connecting leg. The shape was optimized such that its deformation became much larger at a low air flow. We performed two-way fluid–structure interaction analyses to predict performance, and an experimental validation was also conducted. The details of flow, heat transfer, and structural deformation are summarized qualitatively. Our results show that the heat transfer coefficient of a heated surface with a single flexible wing was approximately 11.3 % greater than that of a flat plate.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was carried out on viscous oil–gas flow characteristics in a 69 mm internal diameter pipe. Two-phase flow patterns were determined from holdup time-traces and videos of the flow field in a transparent section of the pipe, in which synthetic commercial oils (32 and 100 cP) and sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6) were fed at oil superficial velocities from 0.04 to 3 m/s and gas superficial velocities from 0.0075 to 3 m/s.  相似文献

In this study, an inverse-problem method was applied to estimate the solid concentration in a solid–liquid two-phase flow. An algebraic slip mixture model was introduced to solve the forward problem of solid–liquid convective heat transfer. The time-average conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, as well as the volume fraction equation were computed in a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The solid concentration in the CFD model was controlled using an external program that included the inversion iteration, and an optimal estimation was performed via experimental measurements. Experiments using a fly-ash–water mixture and sand–water mixture with different solid concentrations in a horizontal pipeline were conducted to verify the accuracy of the inverse-problem method. The estimated results were rectified using a method based on the relationship between the estimated results and estimation error; consequently, the accuracy of the corrected inversion results improved significantly. After a verification through experiments, the inverse-problem method was concluded to be feasible for predicting the solid concentration, as the estimation error of the corrected results was within 7% for all experimental samples for a solid concentration of less than 50%. The inverse-problem method is expected to provide accurate predictions of the solid concentration in solid–liquid two-phase flow systems.  相似文献

Heattransfer processes for a supersonic spatial flow around a spherically blunted cone were studied by solving direct and inverse threedimensional problems taking into account heat flow along the longitudinal and circumferential coordinates. It is shown that highly heatconducting materials can be used to advantage to decrease the maximum temperatures on the windward side of streamline bodies.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of wave interaction on the formation of hydrodynamic slugs in two-phase pipe flow at relatively low gas and liquid superficial velocities. The experiments were conducted using a horizontal 31 m long, D = 10 cm internal diameter transparent pipe at atmospheric pressure. High resolution photography allowed the location of the gas–liquid interface to be measured with a high degree of accuracy at 5 Hz. Image analysis allowed individual waves to be tracked over a 14D section of the pipe. Regular waves having similar properties such as speed, amplitude and length were seen far from the region of slug formation. However, near the transition region, where hydrodynamic slugs were formed, significant differences between wave properties were observed which resulted in wave interaction leading to a type of sub-harmonic resonance and slug formation. The formation of hydrodynamic slugs due to wave interaction differs from predictions for slug formation using long wavelength stability theory. The properties of the waves were quantified which gave detailed information on the resonance mechanism found near the transition to slugging.  相似文献

In the present investigation, we have studied the effects of mixed convection heat and mass transfer on peristaltic flow of Williamson fluid model in a vertical annulus. The governing equations of Williamson fluid model are simplified using the assumptions of long wavelength and low Reynold’s number. An approximated analytical and numerical solutions are found for the velocity field using (i) Perturbation method (ii) Shooting method. The comparisons of analytical and numerical solutions have been presented. The expressions for pressure rise, velocity against various physical parameter are discussed through graphs.  相似文献

A two-fluid model in the Eulerian–Eulerian framework has been implemented for the prediction of gas volume fraction, mean phasic velocities, and the liquid phase turbulence properties for gas–liquid upward flow in a vertical pipe. The governing two-fluid transport equations are discretized using the finite volume method and a low Reynolds number kɛ model is used to predict the turbulence field for the continuous liquid phase. In the present analysis, a fully developed one-dimensional flow is considered where the gas volume fraction profile is predicted using the radial force balance for the bubble phase. The current study investigates: (1) the turbulence modulation terms which represent the effect of bubbles on the liquid phase turbulence in the kε transport equations; (2) the role of the bubble induced turbulent viscosity compared to turbulence generated by shear; and (3) the effect of bubble size on the radial forces which results in either a center-peak or a wall-peak in the gas volume fraction profiles. The results obtained from the current simulation are generally in good agreement with the experimental data, and somewhat improved over the predictions of some previous numerical studies.  相似文献
