Unconditionality in spaces of smooth functions

Our main result shows that subspaces of L¹([0, 1]) on which the blow-up operators act compactly are isometric to dual spaces, and their natural predual belongs to the Banach-Mazur closure of quotient spaces of . Related general results are shown for subspaces X of or of reflexive K?the function spaces, which imply that when X consists of smooth functions it embeds into a Banach space with an unconditional basis. On derivations with respect to finite sets of smooth functions

The purpose of this paper is to show that functions that derivate the two-variable product function and one of the exponential, trigonometric or hyperbolic functions are also standard derivations. The more general problem considered is to describe finite sets of differentiable functions such that derivations with respect to this set are automatically standard derivations.     

Pyramidal vectors and smooth functions on Banach spaces

We prove that if , are Banach spaces such that has nontrivial cotype and has trivial cotype, then smooth functions from into have a kind of ``harmonic" behaviour. More precisely, we show that if is a bounded open subset of and is -smooth with uniformly continuous Fréchet derivative, then is dense in . We also give a short proof of a recent result of P. Hájek.

     

Characterizations of Kadec-Klee properties in symmetric spaces of measurable functions

We present several characterizations of Kadec-Klee properties in symmetric function spaces on the half-line, based on the -functional of J. Peetre. In addition to the usual Kadec-Klee property, we study those symmetric spaces for which sequential convergence in measure (respectively, local convergence in measure) on the unit sphere coincides with norm convergence.

     

Operators of Hadamard type on spaces of smooth functions

For an open set we study the algebra of continuous linear operators on admitting the monomials as eigenvectors. We give a concrete representation of these operators and evaluate it explicitly for the unit ball and the whole of . We also study the topology of and the algebra of eigenvalue sequences.     

Approximation of smooth functions on compact two-point homogeneous spaces

Estimates of Kolmogorov n-widths and linear n-widths , (1q∞) of Sobolev's classes , (r>0, 1p∞) on compact two-point homogeneous spaces (CTPHS) are established. For part of (p,q)[1,∞]×[1,∞], sharp orders of or were obtained by Bordin et al. (J. Funct. Anal. 202(2) (2003) 307). In this paper, we obtain the sharp orders of and for all the remaining (p,q). Our proof is based on positive cubature formulas and Marcinkiewicz–Zygmund-type inequalities on CTPHS.     

Characterizations of Lie derivations of triangular algebras

Let T be a triangular algebra over a commutative ring R. In this paper, under some mild conditions on T, we prove that if δ:T→T is an R-linear map satisfying

Characterizations of Jordan derivations and Jordan homomorphisms

Let 𝒜 be a unital Banach algebra and ? be a unital 𝒜-bimodule. We show that if δ is a linear mapping from 𝒜 into ? satisfying δ(ST)?=?δ(S)T?+Sδ(T) for any S, T?∈?𝒜 with ST?=?W, where W is a left or right separating point of ?, then δ is a Jordan derivation. Also, it is shown that every linear mapping h from 𝒜 into a unital Banach algebra ? which satisfies h(S)h(T)?=?h(ST) for any S,?T?∈?𝒜 with ST?=?W is a Jordan homomorphism if h(W) is a separating point of ?.     

Characterizations of generalized derivations associated with hochschild 2-cocycles and higher derivations

Let be a unital Banach algebra and be a unital -bimodule. A bilinear mapping α : is called a Hochschild 2-cocycle if xα(y, z) ? α(xy, z) + α(x, yz) ? α(x, y)z = 0 for any . We show that if δ is a linear mapping from into satisfying δ(xy) = δ(x)y + xδ(y) + α(x, y) for any with xy = W, where is a left or right separating point of , then δ is a generalized Jordan derivation associated with a Hochschild 2-cocycle α. We also find the relation of higher derivations and generalized derivations associated with Hochschild 2-cocycles.     

Bases in Banach spaces of smooth functions on Cantor-type sets

We suggest a Schauder basis in Banach spaces of smooth functions and traces of smooth functions on Cantor-type sets. In the construction, local Taylor expansions of functions are used.     

Characterizations of isomorphisms and derivations of some algebras

Let ? be a zero-product preserving bijective bounded linear map from a unital algebra A onto a unital algebra B such that ?(1)=k. We show that if A is a CSL algebra on a Hilbert space or a J-lattice algebra on a Banach space then there exists an isomorphism ψ from A onto B such that ?=kψ. For a nest algebra A in a factor von Neumann algebra, we characterize the linear maps on A such that δ(x)y+xδ(y)=0 for all x,y∈A with xy=0.     

Characterizations of Besov-type and Triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces via maximal functions and local means

Let s∈R. In this paper, the authors first establish the maximal function characterizations of the Besov-type space with and τ∈[0,∞), the Triebel-Lizorkin-type space with p∈(0,∞), q∈(0,∞] and τ∈[0,∞), the Besov-Hausdorff space with p∈(1,∞), q∈[1,∞) and and the Triebel-Lizorkin-Hausdorff space with and , where t^′ denotes the conjugate index of t∈[1,∞]. Using this characterization, the authors further obtain the local mean characterizations of these function spaces via functions satisfying the Tauberian condition and establish a Fourier multiplier theorem on these spaces. All these results generalize the existing classical results on Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces by taking τ=0 and are also new even for Q spaces and Hardy-Hausdorff spaces.
