The synthesis of polypeptide‐containing block copolymers combining N‐carboxyanhydride (NCA) ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was investigated. An amide initiator comprising an amine function for the NCA polymerization and an activated bromide for ATRP was used. Well‐defined polypeptide macroinitiators were obtained from γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate NCA, O‐benzyl‐serine NCA, and N‐benzyloxy‐L ‐lysine. Subsequent ATRP macroinitiation from the polypeptides resulted in higher than expected molecular weights. Analysis of the reaction products and model reactions confirmed that this is due to the high frequency of termination reactions by disproportionation in the initial phase of the ATRP, which is inherent in the amide initiator structure. In some cases selective precipitation could be applied to remove unreacted macroinitiator to yield well‐defined block copolymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) were combined to synthesize poly(?‐caprolactone‐co‐octadecyl methacrylate‐co‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) copolymers possessing a triblock or random block structure. Various synthetic pathways (sequential or simultaneous approaches) were investigated for the synthesis of both copolymers. For the preparation of these copolymers, an initiator with dual functionality for ATRP/anionic ring‐opening polymerization, 2‐hydroxyethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate, was used. Copolymers were prepared with good structural control and low polydispersities (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), but one limitation was identified: the dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) block had to be synthesized after the ?‐caprolactone block. ROP could not proceed in the presence of DMAEMA because the complexation of the amine groups in poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) deactivated tin(II) hexanoate, which was used as a catalyst for ROP. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymers with tunable functional groups were obtained through the postfunctionalization of poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐b‐poly(methylvinylsiloxane) diblock copolymers prepared by the anionic ring‐opening polymerization of cyclotrisiloxanes. As the source of the vinyl‐containing segment, 1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5‐trivinylcyclotrisiloxane was used. The obtained polymers showed high block purity and a narrow molecular weight distribution. The postmodification was carried out with a two‐step procedure: in the first step, epoxide groups were introduced into the diblock copolymer, and in the second step, the ring opening of the latter functionalities was carried out. A variety of different nucleophiles were used for the ring‐opening reaction, and the influence of selected reaction parameters, such as the dilution and the use of monofunctional and difunctional nucleophiles, on the resulting polymers were investigated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel and well‐defined dendrimer‐star, block‐comb polymers were successfully achieved by the combination of living ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization on the basis of a dendrimer polyester. Star‐shaped dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s were synthesized by the bulk polymerization of ?‐caprolactone with a dendrimer initiator and tin 2‐ethylhexanoate as a catalyst. The molecular weights of the dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s increased linearly with an increase in the monomer. The dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)s were converted into macroinitiators via esterification with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide. The star‐block copolymer dendrimer poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was obtained by the atom transfer radical polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The molecular weights of these copolymers were adjusted by the variation of the monomer conversion. Then, dendrimer‐star, block‐comb copolymers were prepared with poly(L ‐lactide) blocks grafted from poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) blocks by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. The unique and well‐defined structure of these copolymers presented thermal properties that were different from those of linear poly(?‐caprolactone). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic, star‐shaped copolymers were synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate initiated with a trifunctional, poly(ethylene glycol)‐based surfactant (polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate) in the absence of any catalysts. The metal‐ and solvent‐free polymerization proceeded at 150 °C and afforded polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate‐block‐poly(trimethylene carbonate) with number‐average molecular weights of 4500–11,900 in excellent yields. The copolymers successfully dispersed in a water/ethyl acetate (10/1 v/v) mixture, and the uniform suspension could contain a hydrophobic pigment and pyrene. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polysiloxane diblock copolymers containing a pure polysiloxane backbone were prepared by the functionalization of poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐b‐poly(methylvinylsiloxane) copolymers. The copolymers were obtained by the sequential anionic copolymerization of either 1,3,5,7‐tetramethyl‐1,3,5,7‐tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane or 1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5‐trivinylcyclotrisiloxane with hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane. The two vinyl monomers showed large differences in the propagation rates, but both could be used for the formation of polysiloxane block copolymers. Differences in the polymerization sequences were investigated and revealed that better control was obtained if the slower propagating monomer was polymerized first. The method permitted the synthesis of block copolymers with molecular weight distributions around 1.4 and lower and high block purities. The vinyl groups of the block copolymers were quantitatively and selectively functionalized by hydrosilation or epoxidation reactions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Metal‐free ring‐opening oligomerization of glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE) initiated with tetra‐n‐butylammonium fluoride (n‐Bu4NF) (5.0 mol %) was performed in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGM) (5.0, 10, 20 mol %) as a chain transfer agent, by which the resulting polymers having narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 1.2) were obtained in 80–84% yield. Solubility of the obtained polymers in water increased with the increase of amount of PEGM, owing to an increase of number of PEGM‐block‐oligo(GPE) molecules compared to that of oligo(GPE) molecules having FCH2– group at the initiating end as well as a decrease in degree of oligomerization of oligo(GPE). The PEGM‐block‐oligo(GPE) was isolated by filtration of the polymer aqueous solution, whose number‐average molecular weights determined by NMR spectroscopic analysis were almost consistent to the theoretical values. The PEGM‐block‐oligo(GPE) formed micelles in aqueous media, whose average particle diameter was 58 and 140 nm for the copolymers having a composition of PEGM:GPE = 62:38 and 53:47, respectively. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical ring‐opening polymerization (RROP) behavior of the following monomers is reviewed, and the possibility for application to functional materials is described: cyclic disulfide, bicyclobutane, vinylcyclopropane, vinylcyclobutane, vinyloxirane, vinylthiirane, 4‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxolane, cyclic ketene acetal, cyclic arylsulfide, cyclic α‐oxyacrylate, benzocyclobutene, o‐xylylene dimer, exo‐methylene‐substituted spiro orthocarbonate, exo‐methylene‐substituted spiro orthoester, and vinylcyclopropanone cyclic acetal. RROP is a promising candidate for producing a wide variety of environmentally friendly functional polymers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 265–276, 2001  相似文献

This work deals with the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of the ester‐substituted cyclic carbonates 5‐methyl‐5‐benzoyloxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one ( CC1 ) and 4‐benzoyloxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one ( CC4 ). The polymerization was carried out with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, boron trifluoride etherate, or methyl iodide as the initiator. The reactivity of CC1 and CC4 was higher than that of 5,5‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one, which had no ester moiety. These results suggest that this ring‐opening polymerization was accelerated by the intramolecular ester group. CC1 showed a higher polymerizability than CC4 , affording a polymer with a higher molecular weight. Additionally, using methyl iodide as the initiator was effective for increasing the molecular weight of the obtained polycarbonate and decreasing decarboxylation. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This work deals with the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of the cyclic thiocarbonates 5‐benzoyloxymethyl‐5‐methyl‐1,3‐dioxane‐2‐thione ( 1 ), 5,5‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxane‐2‐thione ( 2 ), and 4‐benzoyloxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxane‐2‐thione ( 3 ). The polymerization was carried out with 2 mol % trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, boron trifluoride etherate, or triethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate as the initiator to afford the polythiocarbonate with a narrow molecular weight distribution accompanying isomerization of the thiocarbonate group. The molecular weight of the obtained polymer could be controlled by the feed ratio of the monomer to the initiator and increased when the second monomer was added to the polymerization mixture after the quantitative consumption of the monomer in the first stage. The block copolymerization of 2 and 3 was also achieved, and this supported the idea that the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of these monomers proceeded via a living process. The order of the polymerization rate was 3 > 2 > 1 . The cationic ring‐opening polymerization of 1 and 3 involved the neighboring group participation of ester groups according to the polymerization rate and molecular orbital calculations with the ab initio method. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A dual initiator (4‐hydroxy‐butyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate), that is, a molecule containing two functional groups capable of initiating two polymerizations occurring by different mechanisms, has been prepared. It has been used for the sequential two‐step synthesis of well‐defined block copolymers of polystyrene (PS) and poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and cationic ring‐opening polymerization (CROP). This dual initiator contains a bromoisobutyrate group, which is an efficient initiator for the ATRP of styrene in combination with the Cu(0)/Cu(II)/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system. In this way, PS with hydroxyl groups (PS‐OH) is formed. The in situ reaction of the hydroxyl groups originating from the dual initiator with trifluoromethane sulfonic anhydride gives a triflate ester initiating group for the CROP of tetrahydrofuran (THF), leading to PTHF with a tertiary bromide end group (PTHF‐Br). PS‐OH and PTHF‐Br homopolymers have been applied as macroinitiators for the CROP of THF and the ATRP of styrene, respectively. PS‐OH, used as a macroinitiator, results in a mixture of the block copolymer and remaining macroinitiator. With PTHF‐Br as a macroinitiator for the ATRP of styrene, well‐defined PTHF‐b‐PS block copolymers can be prepared. The efficiency of PS‐OH or PTHF‐Br as a macroinitiator has been investigated with matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and NMR. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study reports an application of trichloroethanol (TCE) as a bifunctional initiator for the synthesis of block copolymers (BCPs) by organocatalyzed ring‐opening polymerization (OROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). TCE was employed to synthesize a low dispersity poly (valerolactone) macroinitiator, which was subsequently used for the ATRP of tert‐butyl methacrylate. While it is known that TCE can serve as an initiator in ATRP, the ability to induce polymerization under OROP is reported for the first time. The formation of well‐defined BCPs was confirmed by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. Computational studies were performed to obtain a molecular‐level understanding of the ring‐opening polymerization mechanism involving TCE as initiator. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. We successfully synthesized poly(l ‐lactide)‐b‐poly (methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers at ambient temperature by combining ultraviolet light‐induced copper‐catalyzed ATRP and organo‐catalyzed ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) in one‐pot. The polymerization processes were carried out by three routes: one‐pot simultaneous ATRP and ROP, one‐pot sequential ATRP followed by ROP, and one‐pot sequential ROP followed by ATRP. The structure of the block copolymers is confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography, which suggests that the polymerization method is facile and attractive for preparing block copolymers. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pseudo block and triblock copolymers were synthesized by the cationic ring‐opening copolymerization of 1,5,7,11‐tetraoxaspiro[5.5]undecane (SOC1) with trimethylene oxide (OX) via one‐shot and two‐shot procedures, respectively. When SOC1 and OX were copolymerized cationically with boron trifluoride etherate (BF3OEt2) as an initiator in CH2Cl2 at 25 °C, OX was consumed faster than SOC1. SOC1 was polymerized from the OX‐rich gradient copolymer produced in the initial stage of the copolymerization to afford the corresponding pseudo block copolymer, poly [(OX‐grad‐SOC1)‐b‐SOC1]. We also succeeded in the synthesis of a pseudo triblock copolymer by the addition of OX during the course of the polymerization of SOC1 before its complete consumption, which provided the corresponding pseudo triblock copolymer, poly[SOC1‐b‐(OX‐grad‐SOC1)‐b‐SOC1]. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three different, new germanium initiators were used for ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. Chlorobenzene and 120 °C was a usable polymerization system for solution polymerization, and the results from the polymerizations depended on the initiator structure and bulkiness around the insertion site. The average molecular weights as measured by size exclusion chromatography increased linearly with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight dispersity was around 1.2 for initiators 1 and 2 , whereas it was around 1.4 for initiator 3 . The average molecular weight of poly(L ‐lactide) could be controlled with all three initiators by adding different ratios of monomer and initiator. The reaction rate for the solution polymerization was, however, overall extremely slow. With an initial monomer concentration of 1 M and a monomer‐to‐initiator ratio of 50, the conversion was 93% after 161 h for the fastest initiator. In bulk polymerization, 160 °C, the conversion was 90% after 10 h. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 3074–3082, 2003  相似文献

The anionic ring‐opening polymerization of a five‐membered cyclic urethane, 2‐amino‐4,6‐O‐benzylidene‐2‐N,3‐O‐carbonyl‐2‐deoxy‐α,d ‐glucopyranoside (MBUG), which was prepared from naturally abundant d ‐glucosamine, was examined. Potassium tert‐butoxide (t‐BuOK) was the most effective initiator among the evaluated bases and produced polyurethane with the Mn of 7800 without any elimination of CO2. The equimolar reaction of MBUG and t‐BuOK in the presence of CH3I produced N‐methylated MBUG and suggested that the initiation reaction involves proton abstraction from the NH group. This N‐methylated compound did not undergo the polymerization. Therefore, the mechanism of propagation in the ROP of MBUG should involve the proton abstraction and nucleophilic substitution of the resulting amide anion. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. An amino isopropoxyl strontium (Sr‐PO) initiator, which was prepared by the reaction of propylene oxide with liquid strontium ammoniate solution, was used to carry out the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters to obtain aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA). The Sr‐PO initiator demonstrated an effective initiating activity for the ROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) and L‐lactide (LLA) under mild conditions and adjusted the molecular weight by the ratio of monomer to Sr‐PO initiator. Block copolymer PCL‐b‐PLLA was prepared by sequential polymerization of ε‐CL and LLA, which was demonstrated by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. The chemical structure of Sr‐PO initiator was confirmed by elemental analysis of Sr and N, 1H NMR analysis of the end groups in ε‐CL oligomer, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The end groups of PCL were hydroxyl and isopropoxycarbonyl, and FTIR spectroscopy showed the coordination between Sr‐PO initiator and model monomer γ‐butyrolactone. These experimental facts indicated that the ROP of cyclic esters followed a coordination‐insertion mechanism, and cyclic esters exclusively inserted into the Sr–O bond. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined centipede‐like copolymers with poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) as main chain and poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and polystyrene (PSt) as side chains have been synthesized successfully by combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic process includes three steps. (1) Synthesis of PGMA via ATRP; (2) preparation of macroinitiator with one bromine group and a hydroxyl group at every GMA unit of PGMA; (3) ring‐opening polymerization of LLA and ATRP of St to obtain the asymmetric centipede‐like copolymers. The number–average degrees of polymerization of PGMA backbone, PLLA and PSt side chains were determined by 1H‐NMR spectra, and the molecular weights of the resultant intermediates and centipede‐like copolymers were measured by gel permeation chromatography. The molecular weight distributions were narrow and the molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable. The thermal behavior of the centipede‐like copolymers was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter. With the increase of PSt side chain length, the glass transition temperature of PLLA side chains shifted to high temperature, and crystallization ability of PLLA side chains became poor. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, various organic compounds, with different activation modes, have been tested as catalysts for the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic butylene terephthalate oligomers (CBT) in bulk at 210 °C, using tert‐butylbenzyl alcohol (tBnOH) as initiator. Among them, 1,3,5‐triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec‐5‐ene (TBD) appeared to be the most efficient, achieving high monomer conversions in short reaction times (within minutes). Analysis by size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC) of the poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) synthesized using this catalyst also showed that the polymerization follows the expected theoretical M n trend for molecular weights up to 50 kg·mol?1. Chain‐end fidelity relatively to the alcohol initiator has been confirmed by MALDI‐TOF mass spectroscopy, which showed that all polymer chains possess the tert‐butylbenzyl moiety as chain‐end. Finally, to demonstrate the potential of this system for the synthesis of PBT‐based block copolymers, a monomethyl ether poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of 5000 g·mol?1 has been employed as initiator for the ROP of CBT. A PEO‐b‐PBT block copolymer of 15,000 g·mol?1 could thus been obtained, as confirmed by the shift of the SEC traces towards higher molecular weights and the same diffusion coefficient determined for 1H NMR signals of the PEO block and the PBT block. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
