The linear and non‐linear stability of a horizontal layer of a binary fluid mixture in a porous medium heated and salted from below is studied, in the Oberbeck–Boussinesq–Darcy scheme, through the Lyapunov direct method. This is an interesting geophysical case because the salt gradient is stabilizing while heating from below provides a destabilizing effect. The competing effects make an instability analysis difficult. Unconditional non‐linear exponential stability is found in the case where the normalized porosity ? is equal to one. For other values of ? a conditional stability theorem is proved. In both cases we demonstrate the optimum result that the linear and non‐linear critical stability parameters are the same whenever the Principle of Exchange of Stabilities holds. This paper is a continuation of our recent paper 8 . We will consider the semi‐linear Cauchy problem for wave models with scale‐invariant time‐dependent mass and dissipation and power non‐linearity. The goal is to study the interplay between the coefficients of the mass and the dissipation term to prove global existence (in time) of small data energy solutions assuming suitable regularity on the L2 scale with additional L1 regularity for the data. In order to deal with this L2 regularity in the non‐linear part, we will develop and employ some tools from Harmonic Analysis.  相似文献

We consider a class of quasi‐linear evolution equations with non‐linear damping and source terms arising from the models of non‐linear viscoelasticity. By a Galerkin approximation scheme combined with the potential well method we prove that when m<p, where m(?0) and p are, respectively, the growth orders of the non‐linear strain terms and the source term, under appropriate conditions, the initial boundary value problem of the above‐mentioned equations admits global weak solutions and the solutions decay to zero as t→∞. We consider the blowup of solutions of the initial boundary value problem for a class of non‐linear evolution equations with non‐linear damping and source terms. By using the energy compensation method, we prove that when p>max{m, α}, where m, α and p are non‐negative real numbers and m+1, α+1, p+1 are, respectively, the growth orders of the non‐linear strain terms, damping term and source term, under the appropriate conditions, any weak solution of the above‐mentioned problem blows up in finite time. Comparison of the results with the previous ones shows that there exist some clear condition boundaries similar to thresholds among the growth orders of the non‐linear terms, the states of the initial energy and the existence and non‐existence of global weak solutions. We prove nonlinear stability of compactly supported expanding star solutions of the mass‐critical gravitational Euler‐Poisson system. These special solutions were discovered by Goldreich and Weber in 1980. The expansion rate of such solutions can be either self‐similar or non‐self‐similar (linear), and we treat both types. An important outcome of our stability results is the existence of a new class of global‐in‐time radially symmetric solutions, which are not homologous and therefore not encompassed by the existing works. Using Lagrangian coordinates we reformulate the associated free‐boundary problem as a degenerate quasilinear wave equation on a compact spatial domain. The problem is mass‐critical with respect to an invariant rescaling and the analysis is carried out in similarity variables. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Motivated by the theory of self‐duality that provides a variational formulation and resolution for non‐self‐adjoint partial differential equations (Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré (C) Anal Non Linéaire 2007; 24 :171–205; Selfdual Partial Differential Systems and Their Variational Principles. Springer: New York, 2008), we propose new templates for solving large non‐symmetric linear systems. The method consists of combining a new scheme that simultaneously preconditions and symmetrizes the problem, with various well‐known iterative methods for solving linear and symmetric problems. The approach seems to be efficient when dealing with certain ill‐conditioned, and highly non‐symmetric systems. The numerical and theoretical results are provided to show the efficiency of our approach. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The non‐linear stability of plane parallel shear flows in an incompressible homogeneous fluid heated from below and saturating a porous medium is studied by the Lyapunov direct method. In the Oberbeck–Boussinesq–Brinkman (OBB) scheme, if the inertial terms are negligible, as it is widely assumed in literature, we find global non‐linear exponential stability (GNES) independent of the Reynolds number R. However, if these terms are retained, we find a restriction on R (depending on the inertial convective coefficient) both for a homogeneous fluid and a mixture heated and salted from below. In the case of a mixture, when the normalized porosity ε is equal to one, the laminar flows are GNES for small R and for heat Rayleigh numbers less than the critical Rayleigh numbers obtained for the motionless state. We prove the nonlinear stability or instability of certain periodic equilibria of the 1½D relativistic Vlasov‐Maxwell system. In particular, for a purely magnetic equilibrium with vanishing electric field, we prove its nonlinear stability under a sharp criterion by extending the usual Casimir‐energy method in several new ways. For a general electromagnetic equilibrium we prove that nonlinear instability follows from linear instability. The nonlinear instability is macroscopic, involving only the L1‐norms of the electromagnetic fields. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, we combine the usual finite element method with a Dirichlet‐to‐Neumann (DtN) mapping, derived in terms of an infinite Fourier series, to study the solvability and Galerkin approximations of an exterior transmission problem arising in non‐linear incompressible 2d‐elasticity. We show that the variational formulation can be written in a Stokes‐type mixed form with a linear constraint and a non‐linear main operator. Then, we provide the uniqueness of solution for the continuous and discrete formulations, and derive a Cea‐type estimate for the associated error. In particular, our error analysis considers the practical case in which the DtN mapping is approximated by the corresponding finite Fourier series. Finally, a reliable a posteriori error estimate, well suited for adaptive computations, is also given. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Lyapunov direct method is used to study the non‐linear stability of parallel convective shear flows of a mixture heated and salted from below for any Schmidt and Prandtl numbers. Global non‐linear exponential stability for small values of Reynolds number R is found and conditional stability results up to the criticality which are independent of R are given for rigid and stress‐free boundaries. We analyse the evolution of a system of finite faults by considering the non‐linear eigenvalue problems associated to static and dynamic solutions on unbounded domains. We restrict our investigation to the first eigenvalue (Rayleigh quotient). We point out its physical significance through a stability analysis and we give an efficient numerical algorithm able to compute it together with the corresponding eigenfunction. We consider the anti‐plane shearing on a system of finite faults under a slip‐dependent friction in a linear elastic domain, not necessarily bounded. The static problem is formulated in terms of local minima of the energy functional. We introduce the non‐linear (static) eigenvalue problem and we prove the existence of a first eigenvalue/eigenfunction characterizing the isolated local minima. For the dynamic problem, we discuss the existence of solutions with an exponential growth, to deduce a (dynamic) non‐linear eigenvalue problem. We prove the existence of a first dynamic eigenvalue and we analyse its behaviour with respect to the friction parameter. We deduce a mixed finite element discretization of the non‐linear spectral problem and we give a numerical algorithm to approach the first eigenvalue/eigenfunction. Finally we give some numerical results which include convergence tests, on a single fault and a two‐faults system, and a comparison between the non‐linear spectral results and the time evolution results. In this paper we propose a new perspective of population dynamics of plankton, by considering some effects of global ecological cycles, in which a mixed population of plankton is embedded. The propagation of plankton is extremely influenced by various material cycles, such as Nitrogen cycles. Taking this global effect into consideration, we will construct a mathematical model of non‐linear system. Our model is a non‐linear, non‐equilibrium system based on a stochastic model realizing population dynamics of a mixed population of two species of plankton which is placed in a global nitrogen cycle. We show, in this article, that our model gives a new mathematical foundation of phenomena such as water blooms and the predominance of one type of plankton against the other. We calculate the probability of the occurrence of the water bloom of a mixed population and that is where one type of plankton predominates. We show, as a characteristic feature of our model, that the function of predominance has some discontinuity and that there exists a threshold point among the initial values, with respect to the type of plankton that predominates the other. In other words, there is a sort of phase transition in dynamic changes of plankton population, as a result of global ecological cycles. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the non‐linear stability of convection for a Newtonian fluid heated from below, where the viscosity of the fluid depends upon temperature. We are able to show that for Rayleigh numbers below a certain critical value, Rac, the rest state of the fluid and the steady temperature distribution remains non‐linearly stable, using the calculations of Diaz and Straughan (Continuum Mech. Thermodyn. 2004; 16 :347–352). The central contribution of this paper lies in a simpler proof of non‐linear stability, than the ones in the current literature, by use of a suitable maximum principle argument. The problem of thermal convection is investigated when the heat flux is a nonlinear function of the temperature gradient. A complete analysis of the linear instability problem is given. The nonlinear stability problem is studied in a case which is believed to be physically relevant and the stability threshold is compared directly to that found by linear instability theory.   相似文献

The object of this paper is threefold. First, we investigate in a Hilbert space setting the utility of approximate source conditions in the method of Tikhonov–Phillips regularization for linear ill‐posed operator equations. We introduce distance functions measuring the violation of canonical source conditions and derive convergence rates for regularized solutions based on those functions. Moreover, such distance functions are verified for simple multiplication operators in L2(0, 1). The second aim of this paper is to emphasize that multiplication operators play some interesting role in inverse problem theory. In this context, we give examples of non‐linear inverse problems in natural sciences and stochastic finance that can be written as non‐linear operator equations in L2(0, 1), for which the forward operator is a composition of a linear integration operator and a non‐linear superposition operator. The Fréchet derivative of such a forward operator is a composition of a compact integration and a non‐compact multiplication operator. If the multiplier function defining the multiplication operator has zeros, then for the linearization an additional ill‐posedness factor arises. By considering the structure of canonical source conditions for the linearized problem it could be expected that different decay rates of multiplier functions near a zero, for example the decay as a power or as an exponential function, would lead to completely different ill‐posedness situations. As third we apply the results on approximate source conditions to such composite linear problems in L2(0, 1) and indicate that only integrals of multiplier functions and not the specific character of the decay of multiplier functions in a neighbourhood of a zero determine the convergence behaviour of regularized solutions. In this paper we consider the non‐linear wave equation a,b>0, associated with initial and Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove, under suitable conditions on α,β,m,p and for negative initial energy, a global non‐existence theorem. This improves a result by Yang (Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 2002; 25 :825–833), who requires that the initial energy be sufficiently negative and relates the global non‐existence of solutions to the size of Ω. The paper studies the existence, asymptotic behaviour and stability of global solutions to the initial boundary value problem for a class of strongly damped non‐linear wave equations. By a H00.5ptk‐Galerkin approximation scheme, it proves that the above‐mentioned problem admits a unique classical solution depending continuously on initial data and decaying to zero as t→+∞as long as the non‐linear terms are sufficiently smooth; they, as well as their derivatives or partial derivatives, are of polynomial growth order and the initial energy is properly small. In this paper, we consider the initial value problem for the Rosenau equation with damped term. The decay structure of the equation is of the regularity‐loss type, which causes the difficulty in high‐frequency region. Under small assumption on the initial value, we obtain the decay estimates of global solutions for n≥1. The proof also shows that the global solutions may be approximated by the solutions to the corresponding linear problem for n≥2. We prove that the global solutions may be approximated by the superposition of nonlinear diffusion wave for n = 1. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the equation under non‐linear boundary conditions which model the vibrations of a beam clamped at x=0 and supported by a non‐linear bearing at x=L. By adding only one damping mechanism at x=L, we prove the existence of a global solution and exponential decay of the energy. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We obtain via Schauder's fixed point theorem new results for singular second‐order boundary value problems where our non‐linear term f(t,y,z) is allowed to change sign. In particular, our problem may be singular at y=0, t=0 and/or t=1. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
