Layer‐multiplying coextrusion was used to fabricate assemblies of 257 layers, in which polypropylene (PP) nanolayers alternated with thicker polystyrene (PS) layers. The PP layer thickness was varied from 12 to 200 nm. When the assembly was heated into the melt, interfacial instability‐driven breakup of the thin PP layers produced a dispersion of PP particles in a PS matrix. Particle size analysis indicated that breakup of PP microlayers produced a bimodal particle size distribution. A population of submicron particles formed because of the Rayleigh instability, and a second population of large particles formed by relaxation. Breakup of 12‐nm layers resulted in primarily submicron particles. The fraction of PP as submicron particles dropped dramatically as the layer thickness increased to 40 nm. The particle dispersion was characterized by thermal analysis and wide angle X‐ray diffraction. Fractionated crystallization gave rise to four crystallization exotherms at 40, 60, 85, and 100 °C. The exotherm at 40 °C was identified with homogeneous nucleation of the submicron particles in the smectic form. Exotherms at higher temperatures represented fractionated crystallization of the large micron‐sized particles in the PP α‐form. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of a sorbitol nucleating agent on crystallization of polypropylene (PP) in droplets was studied. Layer‐multiplying coextrusion was used to fabricate assemblies of 257 layers, in which PP nanolayers alternated with thicker polystyrene (PS) layers. The concentration of a commercial nucleating agent, Millad 3988 (MD) in the layers was varied up to 2 wt %. When the assembly was heated into the melt, interfacial driven breakup of the 12 nm PP layers produced a dispersion of submicron PP particles in a PS matrix. Analysis of optical microscope images and atomic force microscope images indicated that the particle size was not affected by the presence of MD. The crystallization behavior of the particle dispersion was characterized by thermal analysis. In the absence of a nucleating agent, the submicron particles crystallized almost exclusively by homogeneous nucleation at about 40 °C. Addition of a nucleating agent to the PP layers offered a unique opportunity to study the nature of heterogeneous nucleation. Nucleation by MD resulted in fractionated crystallization of the submicron PP particles. The concentration dependence of the multiple crystallization exotherms was interpreted in terms of the binary polypropylene‐sorbitol phase diagram. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A layer multiplying coextrusion process was used to produce multilayered polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) films with various nucleating agents. When heated into the melt, the thin PP layers broke up into submicron PP droplets that exhibited fractionated crystallization. If the initial PP layers were 20 nm or less, the resulting droplets exhibited exclusively homogeneous nucleation. If a nucleating agent was added, the systematic departure from homogeneous nucleation provided insight into the nature of the heterogeneous nucleation. In this study, we used thermal analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wide angle X‐Ray scattering (WAXS) to examine the effect of two nucleating agents. We confirmed with WAXS and AFM that a soluble sorbitol nucleating agent for the PP α‐form operates in three concentration regimes as proposed in a previous study. Morphologically, homogeneous nucleation of the submicron droplets produced a granular texture. The correlation length from small‐angle X‐Ray scattering (SAXS) suggested that the grains contained 1–3 mesophase domains. Drawing on classical nucleation theory, the critical size nucleus of an individual mesophase domain was estimated to be about 2 nm3, which was considerably smaller than the mesophase domain. This pointed to mesophase crystallization that included the processes of nucleation and growth. Additional experiments were performed with nucleating agents for the PP β‐form. However, they were not effective in nucleating crystallization of the droplets, presumably because they were essentially insoluble in PP and the nucleating particles were too large to be accommodated in the PP droplets. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structural transformation of homogeneously nucleated metastable mesophase of polypropylene (PP) particles was investigated in this study. We demonstrated the formation of heterogeneity‐free mesophase by slow cooling of the droplets unlike mesophase formation by quenching of the PP melt, which contained large number of bulk nuclei. Submicron size PP droplets were produced by thermal break up of PP and polystyrene layered film assembly. When cooled from melt, the PP droplets crystallized into mesophase at 44 °C revealing granular morphology. Subsequent heating thermogram of the PP particles showed a broad exotherm, which was attributed to the transformation of mesophase into α‐phase. This transformation was investigated during heating by annealing the PP particles at different temperatures. Annealed PP particles were analyzed by means of thermal, morphological and structural properties measurements. Results revealed a two step process for the transformation process. In the first step, the internal rearrangement of PP chains, as against melting and recrystallization of the mesophase, was observed. Since granular morphology was not affected significantly up to 120 °C, it was suggested that translational and rotational motions of PP helices produced ordered α‐phase. In the second step, increment in grain size distribution was observed, when the droplets were annealed at 140 °C. The results were attributed to enhanced chain mobility and merging of the grain boundaries. Annealing at 160 °C revealed the formation of short lamellar structures. Crystal thickening, melting and recrystallization of α‐phase were suggested at high temperature annealing. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2011  相似文献

Dispersions of isotactic polypropylene (PP) particles in polystyrene (PS) were produced by interfacially driven breakup of nanolayers in multilayered systems that were fabricated by means of layer-multiplying coextrusion. The droplet size was controlled by the individual PP layer thickness ranging from 12 to 200?nm. In addition, PP was melt blended with PS to produce PP droplets larger than those formed by breakup of nanolayers. The dispersions of PP particles in the PS matrix were melted and annealed under high pressure of 200?MPa. Only the largest PP droplets, with average sizes of 170?μm, crystallized predominantly in the γ form. In the 42-μm droplets obtained by breakup of 200?nm layers, a minor content of the γ form was found whereas the smaller droplets obtained by breakup of the thinner nanolayers contained the α form and/or the mesophase. The results showed that the γ phase formed only in the droplets sufficiently large to contain the most active heterogeneities nucleating PP crystallization under atmospheric pressure. It is concluded that the presence of nucleating heterogeneities is necessary for crystallization of PP in the γ form under high pressure.  相似文献

The effect of introducing silver nanoparticles on the rheological properties and dynamic crystallization behavior of nylon‐6 was investigated. The nanocomposites showed slightly higher viscosity than pure nylon‐6 in the low‐frequency range even at an extremely low loading level of the silver particles (0.5–1.0 wt %). The nanoparticles had a more noticeable effect on the storage modulus than on the loss modulus of a nylon‐6 melt and reduced its loss tangent. They increased the crystallization temperature of nylon‐6 by about 14 °C and produced a sharper crystalline peak. The silver nanoparticles promoted the crystallization of nylon‐6, and their effect on the dynamic crystallization of nylon‐6 at 200 °C was more notable at a lower shear rate and at 190 °C at a higher frequency. Nylon‐6 produced large spherulitic crystals, but the nanocomposites showed a grainy structure. In addition, the silver nanoparticles reduced the fraction of the α‐form crystal but increased that of the γ‐form crystal. The nanocomposites crystallized at 190 °C showed a lower melting temperature than nylon‐6 by about 3 °C, whereas the nanocomposites crystallized at 200 °C showed almost the same melting temperature. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymorphic crystals and complex multiple melting behavior in an aliphatic biodegradable polyester, poly(butylene adipate) (PBA), were thoroughly examined by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Further clarification on mechanisms of multiple melting peaks related to polymorphic crystal forms in PBA was attempted. More stable α‐form crystal is normally favored for crystallization from melt at higher temperatures (31–35 °C), or upon slow cooling from the melt; while the β‐form is the favored species for crystallization at low temperatures (25–28 °C). We further proved that PBA crystallization could also result in all α‐form even at low temperatures (25–28 °C) if it crystallized with the presence of prior α‐form nuclei. PBA packed with both crystal forms could display as many as four melting peaks (P1 ? P4, in ascending temperature order). However, PBA initially containing only the α‐crystal exhibited dual melting peaks of P1 and P3, which are attributed to dual lamellar distributions of the α‐crystal. By contrast, PBA initially containing only the β‐crystal could also exhibit dual melting peaks (P2 and P4) upon scanning. While P2 is clearly associated with melting of the initial β‐crystal, the fourth melting peak (P4), appearing rather broad, was determined to be associated with superimposed thermal events of crystal transformation from β‐ to α‐crystal and final re‐melting of the new re‐organized α‐crystal. Crystal transformation from one to the other or vice versa, lamellae thickening, annealing at molten state, and influence on crystal polymorphism in PBA were analyzed. Relationships and mechanisms of dual peaks for isolate α‐ or β‐crystals in PBA are discussed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 1662–1672, 2005  相似文献

TEM micrographs show that the PA grafts of PS‐g‐PA6 graft copolymers, which are obtained directly by extracting homo‐PA6 out from the homo‐PA6/PS‐g‐PA6 blends, are in the form of wormlike structure. The wormlike PA6 domains can shrink into droplets after annealing at 250 °C for 15 min. The diameter of the droplet determined by TEM and SAXS is in the range of 50–60 nm. This article reports on a unique crystallization behavior of the PA6 grafts in PS‐g‐PA6 graft copolymers. In a DSC cooling scan, PA6 grafts do not crystallize from the melt with a cooling rate of 10 °C/min. However, there is a cold crystallization peak around 65 °C in the subsequent heating scan. This cold crystallization phenomenon, which has not yet been reported in the literature till now, follows well the homogeneous nucleation mechanism and is depressed at relatively slow cooling rates (2 °C/min) or even completely eliminated after annealing within a specific temperature range. It may be caused by the slow diffusion or transport rate of the less flexible PA6 grafts to the crystal fronts when crystallization takes place around its glass transition temperature. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Droplet experiments have been performed on polybutene-1. It was found that this polymer can be cooled to room temperature without homogeneous nucleation of crystallization. It was also found that when the polymer was heterogeneously nucleated, form I (as well as form II) could be crystallized directly from the melt. The melting point of droplets crystallized in form I near room temperature decreased with increasing crystallization temperature, while the melting point of the droplets crystallized in form I at the highest temperatures increased with increasing crystallization temperature. There was a broad minimum at about 60°C. in the melting point versus crystallization temperature curve.  相似文献

The crystallization behavior of isotactic propylene‐1‐hexene (PH) random copolymer having 5.7% mole fraction of hexene content was investigated using simultaneous time‐resolved small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques. For this copolymer, the hexene component cannot be incorporated into the unit cell structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Only α‐phase crystal form of iPP was observed when samples were melt crystallized at temperatures of 40 °C, 60 °C, 80 °C, and 100 °C. Comprehensive analysis of SAXS and WAXD profiles indicated that the crystalline morphology is correlated with crystallization temperature. At high temperatures (e.g., 100 °C) the dominant morphology is the lamellar structure; while at low temperatures (e.g., 40 °C) only highly disordered small crystal blocks can be formed. These morphologies are kinetically controlled. Under a small degree of supercooling (the corresponding iPP crystallization rate is slow), a segmental segregation between iPP and hexene components probably takes place, leading to the formation of iPP lamellar crystals with a higher degree of order. In contrast, under a large degree of supercooling (the corresponding iPP crystallization rate is fast), defective small crystal blocks are favored due to the large thermodynamic driving force and low chain mobility. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of preparation method, composition, and thermal condition on formation of β‐iPP in isotactic polypropylene/ethylene–propylene rubber (iPP/EPR) blends were studied using modulated differential scanning calorimeter (MDSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and phase contrast microscopy (PCM). It was found that the α‐iPP and β‐iPP can simultaneity form in the melt‐blended samples, whereas only α‐iPP exists in the solution‐blended samples. The results show that the formation of β‐iPP in the melt‐blended samples is related to the crystallization temperature and the β‐iPP generally diminishes and finally vanishes when the crystallization temperature moves far from 125 °C. The phenomena that the lower critical temperature of β‐iPP in iPP/EPR obviously increases to 114 °C and the upper critical temperature decreases to 134 °C indicate the narrowing of temperature interval, facilitating the formation of β‐iPP in iPP/EPR. Furthermore, it was found that the amount of β‐iPP in melt‐blended iPP/EPR samples is dependent on the composition and the maximum amount of β‐iPP formed when the composition of iPP/EPR blends is 85:15 in weight. The results through examining the effect of annealing for iPP/EPR samples at melt state indicate that this annealing may eliminate the susceptibility to β‐crystallization of iPP. However, only α‐iPP can be observed in solution‐blended samples subjected to annealing for different time. The PCM images demonstrate that an obvious phase‐separation happens in both melt‐blended and solution‐blended iPP/EPR samples, implying that compared with the disperse degree of EPR in iPP, the preparation method plays a dominant role in formation of β‐iPP. It is suggested that the origin of formation of β‐iPP results from the thermomechanical history of the EPR component in iPP/EPR. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystal structures of nylons X 11 under different conditions (X = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12) were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and electron diffraction (ED). Both the solution‐ and melt‐crystallized samples of nylon 2 11 possess the hexagonal lattice (named γ‐form). Nylons 4 11 and 6 11 exhibit the monoclinic unit cell (termed as α‐like form) for both samples characteristic of two strong diffractions at 0.44 and 0.38 nm. For nylons 8 11, 10 11, and 12 11, the α‐like form are obtained for the solution‐crystallized samples while the β‐like ones are obtained in the case of the melt‐crystallized ones, with typical strong diffractions at 0.42 and 0.40 nm. The quenched nylon 12 11 samples annealing at different temperatures were also studied in this work to illustrate the various crystal forms obtained under different conditions. During the heating process, the α‐like forms of the solution‐crystallized samples for nylons 8 11, 10 11, and 12 11 transform into the high‐temperature hexagonal phases prior to melting, while those of nylons 4 11 and 6 11 did not show such transformations before melting. Variable‐temperature Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was applied to investigate the crystalline transition phenomena and illustrate their essential features in the molecular level. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal behavior of melt‐mixed polypropylene (PP)/poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) blends was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, and it was quantitatively related to the morphology observed through scanning electron microscopy. The PP/PCL blends were immiscible in the whole composition range; however, some interesting phenomena were found. Blends with low PP contents crystallized in a fractionated fashion. By applying a self‐nucleation procedure, we demonstrated that this occurred because of a lack of highly active heterogeneities within the confined PP domains. On the other hand, PP acted as a nucleating agent for PCL, and when the PP content was reduced, the higher surface/volume ratio increased its nucleating activity. The nucleating effect was improved when the PP was self‐nucleated because of the better nucleating effect of PP annealed crystals. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work describes the melting and polymorphic behavior of poly(decamethylene terephthalamide) (PA 10T). Both solution‐crystallized (SC) and melt‐crystallized (MC) PA 10T show double melting endotherms in DSC. The SC crystal form melts at 260–300°C giving the first melting endotherm, and meanwhile undergoes a polymorphic transition forming the MC crystal form. The subsequent melting of the MC crystal form gives the second melting endotherm at 300–325°C. This irreversible polymorphic transition is confirmed by variable‐temperature WAXD and IR. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) shows a glass transition temperature (Tg) at 127°C and the presence of an α′ transition at 203°C (0.1 and 1 Hz). This transition could be confirmed by DSC and variable‐temperature WAXD experiments. The α′ transition correlates with a reversible thermal process and a sudden change in intersheet spacing. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. The structure and morphology of a novel polyamide, nylon‐10,14, and its lamellar crystals from dilute solution were examined by transmission electron microscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). Both the electron‐diffraction pattern and WAXD data demonstrated that nylon‐10,14 adopts the structure of a triclinic lattice similar to that of the traditional nylon‐66 but with a corresponding increase of the c parameter to 3.23 nm. In addition, the thermal behavior of melt‐crystallized nylon‐10,14 was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass‐transition temperature of nylon‐10,14 determined by the DMA data was 46.6°C. DSC indicated that the multiple melting behavior of isothermally crystallized nylon‐10,14 probably results from the melt and recrystallization mechanism. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The dispersion reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine in toluene in the presence of the polystyrene dithiobenzoate (PS‐CTA) macro‐RAFT agent with different chain length is discussed. The RAFT polymerization undergoes an initial slow homogeneous polymerization and a subsequent fast heterogeneous one. The RAFT polymerization rate is dependent on the PS‐CTA chain length, and short PS‐CTA generally leads to fast RAFT polymerization. The dispersion RAFT polymerization induces the self‐assembly of the in situ synthesized polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) block copolymer into highly concentrated block copolymer nano‐objects. The PS‐CTA chain length exerts great influence on the particle nucleation and the size and morphology of the block copolymer nano‐objects. It is found, short PS‐CTA leads to fast particle nucleation and tends to produce large‐sized vesicles or large‐compound micelles, and long PS‐CTA leads to formation of small‐sized nanospheres. Comparison between the polymerization‐induced self‐assembly and self‐assembly of block copolymer in the block‐selective solvent is made, and the great difference between the two methods is demonstrated. The present study is anticipated to be useful to reveal the chain extension and the particle growth of block copolymer during the RAFT polymerization under dispersion condition. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Information on the crystalline structure and the properties of poly(butylene‐2,6‐naphthalene dicarboxylate) (PBN) has not been well reported until now, but it is known that there are two different crystal modifications in PBN, as follows: one is formed in isotropic samples by annealing (α form); another appears by annealing with tension (β form). The relation between the crystal modifications and the kinetics of isothermal crystallization for PBN was investigated using in‐situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The melting behavior of each crystalline form was also studied by means of FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. From the analysis of the melt‐crystallized PBN specimens, the two crystalline forms coexisted in the isotropic samples melt‐crystallized at 230°C, but only the α crystal modification was observed in the films annealed at lower temperatures. In addition, it was revealed that, at 230°C, the β modification was formed only in the primary crystallization process. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The double melting behavior of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polyimide was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). This liquid crystalline polyimide exhibited a normal melting peak around 278 °C and transformed into a smectic A phase. The smectic A phase changed to nematic phase upon heating to 298 °C, then became isotropic melt around 345 °C. The samples annealed or isothermally crystallized at lower temperature showed double melting endotherms during heating scan. The annealing‐induced melting endotherm was highly dependent on annealing conditions, whereas the normal melting endotherm was almost not influenced by annealing when the annealing temperature was low. Various possibilities for the lower melting endotherm are discussed. The equilibrium melting points of both melting peaks were extrapolated to be 283.2 °C. Combined analytical results showed that the double melting peaks were from the melting of the two types of crystallites generated from two crystallization processes: a slow and a fast one. Fast crystallization may start from the well‐aligned liquid crystal domains, whereas the slow one may be from the fringed or amorphous regions. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The crystallization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) blends was studied with differential scanning calorimetry, from which the phase diagram was derived. Strong miscibility was underlined by the large negative Flory–Huggins interaction parameter (?0.25). The crystallization of the blend components differed remarkably. Whereas PVDF always crystallized in the surroundings of a homogeneous melt, PHB crystallized in a volume that was confined by the already existing PVDF spherulites, partly in their surroundings and partly inside. Under isothermal conditions, PVDF usually crystallized regularly in three dimensions with predominant quench‐induced athermal nucleation. The Avrami exponent for PVDF dendritic spherulitic growth was, however, distinctly smaller than that for compact growth, and this revealed the two‐dimensional lamellar growth inside. This deviation from ideal Avrami behavior was caused by the development of compositional inhomogeneities as PVDF crystallization proceeded, and this decelerated the kinetics. PHB crystallized three‐dimensionally with mixed thermal and athermal nucleation outside the PVDF spherulites. Inside the PVDF spherulites, PHB crystallization proceeded in a fibrillar fashion with thermal nucleation; the growth front followed the amorphous paths inside the dendritic PVDF spherulites. The crystallization was faster than that in the melt of uncrystallized PVDF. Solid PVDF acts possibly heterogeneously nucleating, accelerating PHB crystallization. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
